  • Coastal Foraging on the low tide line for delicious edibles is one of our favourite things to do. Exploring rock pools and searching for Crabs, Clams and other sea life is not only fascinating but is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. Then after collecting what we needed for a meal we clean them on the shore. Then go for a delicious family cook up. 😊

@@samsammsammm1547 Good question. Perhaps my experience as a commercial lobsterman and an operator of an urchin diving boat can lend some insight. As many creatures are, mussels are an intertidal niche colonizing species and they are competing with other colonizing species including fauna. I don't believe it was was a coincidence mussels did not live in any significant way, where John pointed out limpets, who extract water column nutrients at that location as mussels would. I suspect there are perhaps unknown mechanisms of species "boundary making" and probable proximal fertility at work. we don't understand or are not well informed about this. but the 'rules of thumb' of historically sustainable systems work... Below the threshold of over exploitation, a self sustaining colony of an undesirable or 'invasive' species or can "take hold"... (why I have some disagreement on the wholesale releasing of conger eels who compete with lingcod for this reason...) In my experience, our lobsters are doing fine because basic 'best practices' over the long term, that ensure their continuation; in their environ. This did not happen here with our 'green urchins' where the resource was, in wholesale, extirpated from their niches. and can not regain a "foothold" because of occupying species' defenses and competitiveness, despite our projects of "repopulation".

Hi mate.. I love Mussels fresh but i give them a couple of hours in fresh salted water this then clears them out of sand. While i wait for them i forage around for clams and other shell fish. Never commented upon this video before despite watching it numerous times for ideas. The coastal foraging for muscles in particular interested me. Recently ventured to the coast and whilst down there took it upon myself to forage for some muscles. Sadly, didn't have as much luck as yourself there. The muscles were small. Couldn't bring myself to kill a crab which I caught and later released - biggest crab I've seen in person too. Fish, muscles and clams are probably all I'm able to catch and eat. Thanks for sharing.

Anyone tempted to set up an aquarium to keep a few of the exotic fauna and flora found in UK rock pools should bear in mind that it is just as difficult as maintaining a tropical marine aquarium, with the extra problem of keeping the water cold in a centrally heated house. What I find surprising is why there aren't more people foraging. I understand most people not wanting to stick their hands in caves to retrieve a crab but why are there not loads of people pulling mussels from the rocks. If I lived there I would be collecting mussels regularly.

@@TheFishLocker I'm thinking it's more an issue for you to take up with UA-cam than anything on my end. I only subscribe to about a half dozen channels so it's easy for me to see when one goes missing. This has happened with you and two other channels, I follow, over the past few years or so. One of the two was aware that many of his viewers weren't receiving subscription notifications and the other had absolutely no idea. Both contacted UA-cam and the matter was addressed. It's a common problem that you might want to look into if you're getting messages from others with the same issue...
Yours is a great channel with excellent content. I know how much hard work and dedication you put into making these videos. It's much more appropriated than you know.
