    Cheapest way to get cinema and film look, I bought Sony ZV-1 $550. Capturing video with 1/50 shutter, possible with internal ND-filter and changing picture profile gamma to HLG or S-Log2 with Rec709 color gamut does the trick. It is possible to color grade perfectly and have good dynamic range. Also possible to color grade in camera to get film look.
    ZV-1 Mark II seems to be worse.

    • @VietinghoffAlex
      @VietinghoffAlex  Рік тому

      Glad that worked for you! I have the ZV1 but I'm trying to sell it because I just haven't been happy with the image from it.

    • @gruntaxeman3740
      @gruntaxeman3740 Рік тому

      It required tweaks. Color grading and cinematic look requires more dynamic range but shooting S-log2 didn't work out because 8-bit recording degraded colors. So I created LUT to transform HLG and S-Log2 gamma with Rec709 gamug. S-Log2 is more noisier with more dynamic range (noise can be cleaned on post), but most of time HLG works best.
      Also 8-bit recording makes exposure more critical while there are no playroom to fix exposure afterwards. That was also required to get perfect skin tones so I use manual exposure only. I have two reference points that I can carry everywhere: piece of white paper and my caucasian skin :) I check subject exposure using those while light direction matter, or shooting landscape/environment I just put the paper on floor/ground. Optimum zebras for HLG was 60% (+/-2) skin, and 73+% for piece of paper. S-Log2 50% (+/-2) skin and 59%+ for piece of paper
      Second tweak was to change sharpening to -7. Camera wastes bits on video compresion way too much when sharpening was on and it degraded especially 1080p footage. Some shots needed to shoot 1080p because of cropping or need of fast framerate but when making video on streaming those doesn't matter. Streaming video quality is in practice 1080p and I actually improved 4k footage by adding 2pix radius gaussian blur to them to improve compression, while 1080p was upscaled to 4k with bicubic filtering.
      So making cinematic shots working on ZV-1 need more effort on post processing and biggest inconvience is that I need to carefully plan my shots, configure settings to camera memory before shooting starts so I change them quickly.
      I've been researching a lot what is the bigger and better gear next to ZV-1 and unfortunately there is huge difference in price.. Next size and price is likely Sony FX3 + Sigma Art 24-70mm + ND filter + expensive gimbal (Sony ZV-1 can be stabilized with small and cheap gimbal). There are a lot of cameras from different manufactures between those but I'm very sensitive to rolling shutter and bad autofocus, and I need slow motion capability.
      Sony ZV-E1 is kind of interesting but I'll end up using Sigma Art 24-70mm on that too and I doubt that small plastic camera body is usable with heavy full frame lenses. I think the killer camera for me is having APS-C sized Exmor RS type sensor with fast rolling shutter and features like in ZV-1, integrated fast lens with 16-50mm focal length with manual focus ring.

      You can use almost any lenses since it's a mirrorless camera. I'd suggest if you're very new to just use the kit lens that comes with the EOS M at first, then buy a nice vintage portrait lens like the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2. You use the free MLVApp to transcode the raw footage, then you can edit it in anything! I'd suggest using the free Davinci Resolve.

    Is there anything more ridiculous than putting a small camera in a bulky box to look more professional? complex or expensive equipment don´t make you a better filmmaker...Let's buy the body of a Ferrari and put an engine from a scooter then!...filmmaking has become about pretending: simulating the warmth of analog, pretending that you have an expensive camera...better you focus on the quality of the stories you tell and not on pretending things that are not.

    • @VietinghoffAlex
      @VietinghoffAlex  6 місяців тому

      Did you watch the whole video? There are a few benefits to this rehousing: the in-body fan cools the camera which allows for longer record times in raw mode, the new body has a bunch of mounting points for professional gear, and it's ergonomic and makes for much easier/better handheld operation than the original EOS M body.
      I agree that story is the most important thing, but this is a fun and cheap DIY project that can be creatively inspiring for new filmmakers who are using their gear as an excuse not to just go shoot :)
