The comment about how it's ok to do projects for fun, but just be honest without yourself that it's for fun and don't try to justify it somehow, is extremely relatable. Even right now out of no where I decided to build a TinyPC out of the newest thin client style machine I could find that supports Windows XP just so I'd have a hardware solution to playing a couple games that have been annoying me to get to run on modern hardware. There's no practical use for the project, but for the ~150 bucks I'm spending all in for parts, tools, etc. it's worth it for the fun of building the project itself for me, much less playing my old games on it.
Darn that was a nice video. Due to technical difficulties, I was only able to watch this video at 1.25x speed instead of the usual 2x speed if tend to opt for. This turned out to be a blessing. 8:41 I really liked the ending part, where you talk about the whole reason behind this. I cannot agree more. I often find myself doing dumb and maybe pointless (yet very interesting) small projects and while most of the times it ends up useless, I sure had a lot of fun. Examples would be when I took an iPad screen and turned it into a monitor, or when I bought a display-less a500 dslr camera.
What an interesting watch. Never would have expected the footage to turn out so good for a modded action cam! Watching you tinker and problem solve was very entertaining, and I'm glad you documented the process.
What an amazing project to be working on, it might not be as pointless as you think, it is a really inspirational for me :) Loved the footages it can shoot as well!
You are my kind of renaissance man, it is a lonely road man and depressing but when you pass a ship in the night you just know. Eternal deep respect, and don’t let the confused ones get you down… they just haven’t gotten there yet. Love you lil bro, you are so damn cool from a real1
Thanks for this video! It's like getting a massage from UA-cam! It's refreshing to see some content that's just exploring things and enjoying them! The pacing is excellent! Keep up the great work! 👍🏾
It's alive 😂 In a fallout scenario you could be a survivor. Building from scraps and adjusting designs to your own needs. You are a genius, a mad one in a good way.
Great video! Now I know what NOT to do with a new or semi-new action camera. But thanx to people like you who cannot resist venturing to the unknown, going to where no man has gone before and filming it for the rest of us that lack the courage to take the leap but still have the curiosity. Thank you for sharing this experience. 👍
Did this with a Yi 4k a few years back. It was a fun project, cost about as much as a roll of vision 3 and processing and it let me use my c-mount lenses for something again. It's not the easiest to use, focus is finicky, but it's cheaper and waaaay lighter than dragging a bolex around for my use case. Are there better cameras for the job? Yes. Am I glad I did it, absolutely.

Huge respect for actually doing your research when choosing an action camera. All other people keep wasting their money on an unreliable GoPro, Insta360's ONE RS is a huge leap compared to a GoPro.
I was working in Paris, Strasbourg, Germany and Brussels last November and my camera of choice from my large collection was the insta RS for shots from inside the car because I know it makes a fantastic job of it
sweet. same here. have the insta 1 Inch and the Sony RX0Mk2 converted to MFT/c-mount. It is a you said fun. I even got the PD Lidar system on it so I have now old super 16mm cinema lenses on a 1" body with autofocus :D just to see how far one can go with it. It is fun, but for me not really usable
I love this. I’ve seen a couple of action cam turned tiny cinema camera rigs and I just love the creativity of it all. The footage looks stunning, even out of focus :)
Incredible project. If the backbone kit wasn't pornographically expensive, in addition to no longer being manufactured, I would definitely do it in my Leica module. I'm also building my dream rig with the one rs. Greetings from Brazil.
Love the look of the footage. I've been wanting to buy a pre-made backbone gopro for a while and this is only accelerating that desire. Been following your channel for a while, glad to see the video has been really successful for you.
I love this! The footage looks beautiful, and the whole idea of just doing projects for fun is so true!! As someone who has started collecting older cameras (BMPCC OG, Digital Handycam), this is definitely something I could see myself adding to the collection!
Great video! Love the footage the modded camera produces, and just seeing the test footage demo'd got me thinking of all the fun projects it'd be perfect for. I think I dig this look way more than the unmodded action cam, but that's also what's so cool about different cameras having different "looks". Would love to shoot on a modded action cam like this sometime!
Interesting to know there are possibilities such as this and the technical issues related as well. Also interesting to see the sensor used with other lenses though. I think I'll keep my One R as it is! Thanks for the video.
Love this! Really cool! Regardless of its use case. That’s a great camara to have with a. Cool story. It’s feel nostalgic. So the focus doesn’t really bother me to much. It’s all forgivable because it’s memorable
my thinking of this is that its like throwing a certain something at a wall and seeing what sticks... and whats stuck is a glittering golden envelope of amazing jerry rigging to make ab great piece of kit.
That is awesome! And when on a tripod and in focus it gives a great result, with a seventies flavour that wouldbt look out if place in a Dirty Harry movie! Sweet.
Footage's look awesome seriously!...hope insta 360 gets to see ur work and get idea from it...........Action cam..interchangable lenses...with stabilization!! Crayyy
I managed to put a camcorder lens on a Sony PlayStation webcam and had some fun with that, and did think about seeing if I could move the setup to an old Yi action cam I have. This reminded me a lot of that
Not a camera person but the vid on ur mod action camera looks sick the vid part it reminds me when it was 1991 or watching old shows its like a glimpse to the past love it man
i recently started watching another photog youtube channel, james popsys, and he was talking about how he doesn't love the sony mirrorless cameras because they are too perfect, you'll get exactly the image you expect out of them every time (and as a result any faults in the image are your fault for screwing something up), but at the end of the day they're kind of boring to use. you made a camera that is all character, that dreamlike image is gorgeous and weird and bad in all the best ways.
not fully sure if this would work, but to aid in focusing you might be able to attach some kind of loop to act as a viewfinder. it would add space but still be fairly compact.
Thank you for this very interesting video. I think the images at the end are quite beautiful -- especially at the dock and the portability is a big draw. I've been using some regular 8 cinema lenses on a Pentax Q -- adapters are available -- and its a much easier way to get there. I find the quality of the regular 8 lenses (and probably even more importantly the condition of the specific lens) varies dramatically, but again the small size, the quirkiness of the set up and even the lower resolution are actually all part of the draw.
This is really cool, I would recommend you find a small display you can add, or try to find an app you can connect to the camera with, this will help setting focus before going for the shot
A solution in need of a problem, but awesome project. I tried a few C-mount lenses on a GH3 back in the day, which was fine for video, useless for photography. Now I’ve built up my collection of M4/3 lenses and they feel like the best compromise for size, functionality, and IQ. I also carried the ZS100 around in my bag but ended up using my phone for most photos anyways. I think my only temptation from the 1-inch cam world would be a rx100, tho i owned the OG rx10 and while the lens was great, the menus and RAW files were not, so aside from my phone, my go-to is a G7 with the 20/1.7 or 45/1.8
It's natively got that soft dreamy look to it! Sure it's a pretty specific use case, but it's not too niche too hold onto. Plenty of filmmakers dig that aesthetic
I have the original One R with 360 upgrade. I used it a few times but it sat for the most part. Now I'm into photography more and actually have a need for it. I want the new Ace Pro
Hey Evan. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard about the origins of the word hacker. Originally the word referred to people who would modify any device, and contraption to make it operate outside specifications or do thing it wasn’t designed to do. They were hacking at it. You are a true hacker.
I agree with the last closing thought. Bought a Fujifilm XA3 from someone cause it would be my first fuji as well as it being broken so it was relatively cheap in local markets..... but i just really liked fixing up the lcd screen...
U’re the type of explorer who travelled around the globe wanting to discover a new continent. After years of struggle, broken ships, dead team members u arrive to a land u thought was a new continent just to find out this has been discovered 50 years earlier. I used to do similar stuff with my toys when I was young though, then I figured taking things apart was not for me. Eventually I found graphic design and art and turns out I actually do have talent for these. Wish u find what u have talent for.

Do one with a global shutter sensor.
it`s blurry? is it blurry because the insides are reflective?

Fun is enough of a justification on its own.
Absolutely. I love the tiny PC idea. I get a kick out of super compact gear for some reason
That sounds like justification to me
Irrational tinkering is LIFE
What case are you going with
Dude's LIFE is gonna change when he finally discovers the dremel tool...

Loving the soft vintage look you got with this little custom rig. Absolutely beautiful.
I really like the look and feel of the footages! Definitely worth it. Great job, Evan.
The footage came out better than I was expecting haha- Thank you
It's crazy to see how far you've come in less than a year!! ALSO The shots of Cleveland are beautiful woww love the seagulls
Thank you joj 🙏
Brilliant Work, Evan, and Amazing Shots! Thanks my brother
Big Spirited Man vibes - keep it up
Van NEEDS to see this
What an interesting watch. Never would have expected the footage to turn out so good for a modded action cam! Watching you tinker and problem solve was very entertaining, and I'm glad you documented the process.
You managed to get rid of the over sharpened look with those vintage lenses! Such a refreshing video! Keep it up!
This is a perfect example of someone who has the confidence to just crack something open and get to work
Definition of "what do u mean it doesn't fit"
What an amazing project to be working on, it might not be as pointless as you think, it is a really inspirational for me :) Loved the footages it can shoot as well!
Loved the perspective of just doing it for fun, even if the results weren't game-changing
Thank you!

I love that thing so much, it looks like a movie prop honestly with all the deep modification to it. Cyberpunk camera
Image quality is amazing. Vintage looking. And the camera looks like something straight out of Fallout! Cool stuff!
I’ve wanted to mod a camera like this. It’s really exciting to watch someone do it. Thank you.
I'm all for repurposing old cameras and leaves, it's cool and challenging and the results are worth the effort, good job dude
This is how things get improved. You show that the final design doesn't have to be the final design, there is always room for improvement.
I love videos like this I have always loved modifying things I own and watching people do the same
Thanks for this video! It's like getting a massage from UA-cam! It's refreshing to see some content that's just exploring things and enjoying them! The pacing is excellent! Keep up the great work! 👍🏾
Both the actual camera and the footage you've gotten are beautiful!
as a tinkerer and a someone into cameras, I love this stuff. Keep it up
It's alive 😂

That's such a cool mod-project! I'm also a firm believer of doing things "because".
Dude your videos are just this niche of just making stuff that I have been looking for, for a while. Keep it up bro!
WOW those shots at the end are pretty. I love the dreamy look, so so so beautiful
Gorgeous video, amazing and interesting mod, it shoots as though you are capturing a daydream!
Great video! Now I know what NOT to do with a new or semi-new action camera. Fun to see that DIY passion projects like are still happening out there.
Love the bloom on all those shots! Everything looks so dreamy. It's almost hard to believe that the footage is digital
Lovely music and atmosphere
Man, how cool. I will never do that. But i enjoyed watching it and relished the technical story-telling. Nice work.
I would never of imagined to do this experiment, but now I've seen this, I don't know how I've lived without it.
Loved the concept. It’s definitely fun to tinker and it doesn’t matter if the idea failed for you, that’s how great ideas are eventually born. Subbed!
WOW! I love how the footage that it takes looks! Keep it up bro!

Sick- Thats the dream setup for the tiny cam. Been looking into trying out lidar
Great job buddy you have done a great upgrade for the camera 😊
4:51 looks amazing !
I love this. I’ve seen a couple of action cam turned tiny cinema camera rigs and I just love the creativity of it all. The footage looks stunning, even out of focus :)
Beautifull colours and soft focus looks straight out of an old broadcast. Would be fun to see together with some bellows to simulate tiltshift.

bravo! this was a refreshing channel to encounter in the sea of noise

love how you go the extra mile for doing such a scuffed rig :D
completly destroying the camera cage and cutting down the audio dongle are just insane
very cool, love the chill video
my thinking of this is that its like throwing a certain something at a wall and seeing what sticks... and whats stuck is a glittering golden envelope of amazing jerry rigging to make ab great piece of kit.

thats just too fun man
love the project
These shots at the end are gorgeous, awesome video and project!
Love the look of the camera with your filming skills
Looks so cool! Camera looks kind of postapocalyptic and footage makes me think we're stuck in the 80s. Perfect blend of cyberpunk :D
Footage's look awesome seriously!...hope insta 360 gets to see ur work and get idea from it...........Action cam..interchangable lenses...with stabilization!! Crayyy
the footage from the camera looks dreamy and has a vibe of its own.
Really like how the footage looks! Super fun little project, Evan! 👏
This is really dope. Inspires me to get back to creating camera stuff in a DIY way.
This is super cool! I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I really like the idea!
I managed to put a camcorder lens on a Sony PlayStation webcam and had some fun with that, and did think about seeing if I could move the setup to an old Yi action cam I have. This reminded me a lot of that

In favor of the 1-inch sensor, TV productions used to be shot on smaller sensors than that.

This is good engineering for engineering sake.
Thank you so much for putting a baggie around the sensor😨😨. You must have heard me screaming into the monitor
Love the video.

writing a comment for supporting this cool video. i want more people to see this art

Nice work. I do GoPro tear down to make them lightweight for miniature drone. I understand the stress.
really inspiring and great message throughout, well done
