    15:54 this position is very common in the breaking bad universe. Gus forced to look at his partner dead, Walter falling over to look at Hank as a result of his decisions, and Saul's combination of the two, he's bounded and forced to look at his actions.

      They’re all forced to look at their actions. Gus disrespecting Don Elasio resulted in Max’s death. Walter’s meth empire resulted in Hank’s death. Saul’s actions resulted in Howard’s death.

      I agree. The only thing I predicted was Howard becoming a cartel victim inadvertently somehow because of the feud Jimmy and Kim waged upon him, and I only predicted it because Howard was the only moral character.
      This series is every bit as great as BrBa.

      It’s too unrealistic. There’s no way anyone would trade 7 years for 70 or whatever it is. I get the whole come to Jesus moment but cmon, you have to be a sucker to believe it and if he really did that he would probably off himself once the original sentence elapsed and he was still stuck in prison. Now if they showed that I would’ve bought it 😂

    I genuinely was dissapointed when Saul started to confess. BUT the very he said ”Walter White couldn’t have done it without me” I was actually proud. Proud over him finally being HONEST, proud that he loudly come to terms over the issues that was plaguing him over the shows runtime.

    I just realized something about the Gus bar scene. I think maybe in this scene, Gus is also sort of appreciating or understanding how defensive Nacho was about his dad, and just in general the compassion Mike was showing Nacho as well. In his moment of incredible stress with Lalo, he really was willing to threaten and kill this civilian in order to get his way, but now that things have wound down, and has a moment to appreciate another human being again, he's starting to understand that perspective a little bit more again, realizing that he'll likely be in the same position if he tries to form a relationship with the bartender. And I think that would lead Gus into just in general not being AS much of a hard-ass in Breaking Bad, at least in the beginning. The guy who understands Walt's motivations for getting his money, to tell Mike back at him that fear isn't a good motivator. Of course that only lasts until his buttons start being pushed again with how much Walt and Jesse set him back, and with the Cartel harassing him.
    I don't know, could be a stretch but to me it helps link BCS and BB in that Gus does have a bit of a change, even if it's not as drastic as some of the other characters

      @georgeforeman7621 Рік тому +8

    • @BertoPlease
      @BertoPlease Рік тому +5

      @@georgeforeman7621 I think the common consensus in the fanbase is that the fact that Nacho had Gus' fate in his hands the whole time they were doing his questioning, even Nacho giving Gus some threatening glances, made him realize that fear is indeed a very dangerous way to get someone to do your bidding, as he had no love or loyalty to Gus and perhaps thought he could throw him under the bus. But yeah this thought I had kinda compliments that thought process as well

    In regards to Jimmy getting 86 years, I think there's an important line of dialouge when Jimmy says "With good behavior, who knows?" It seems like a joke but I think that it's implying that Jimmy knows he could find a way to maneuver the system to get out of jail eventually if he really wanted to. Even if it wasn't intended that way I think we all know Jimmy is more than capable of that regardless. Not saying he'll get out in seven years but I think there's still reason enough to believe that he "has a shot of seeing daylight in his old age."
    Really loved these Teir List videos and all your coverage on Better Call Saul BTW!

    I love the Gus at the bar scene and how they did not back away from the idea of Gus' sexuality clashing with the themes that define his character.
    A lot of hardcore "sigma males" love to deny Gus' sexuality, but so much of that scene is Gus looking at the bartender and entertaining the idea of a life and of a love with him. Also, the way that the bartender describes that the wine has an ever slight taste of blood is reaffirmed when Gus finishes the glass before leaving - deciding that both the only thing a relationship would bring is blood and that revenge will always be more important than it.
    That scene was really incredibly and probably is one of my favorites in the series for all of the subtext and unspoken meaning that it has.Absolutely adore these retrospectives, would love to see these for Breaking Bad if it is something you would enjoy making.

      And I guess when you think about it, he may not have gotten along nearly as well with the inmates at the cushy prison he was originally going to go to, as no matter where he went he would inevitably be seen as Saul instead of James/Jimmy. Over there he'd probably be around more white-collar and other upper-class criminals who would be more inclined to look down on him. The prison he's going to instead is full of the kind of people he catered to as Saul, and to them he's a hero of sorts. He may be serving functionally a life sentence, but the prosecutors may have unintentionally handed him the more comfortable prison life when comparing the two.

    I actually have a slightly different perspective on what the cigarette being in colour means. A lot of people I've seen talk about it symbolizing that there's still a spark between them. And maybe that is what they were going for, idk. But I've always interpreted it differently.
    The way I see it, the use of colour in the Gene timeline in "Better Call Saul" has always symbolized one thing: Gene looking back at his glory days. In the first episode Gene's bleak and grey life is interrupted by him looking at his Saul commercial. The colour symbolizing that those were his glory days. Those were the days he wishes more than anything he could go back to. His wealth and power and fame as Saul.
    However, throughout BCS we've come to understand that Saul was a mask to hide pain more than anything. The wealth and the power and the fame were all empty. Coping mechanisms for trauma. And I think after he got caught and after his trial Jimmy realized this too and began to be honest with himself.
    And so what appears in colour now is the cigarette with Kim. Because his glory days weren't Saul, his glory days were all the days he spent with Kim. He wishes more than anything that he could go back to those days of them being together, smoking their cigarette in the HHM parking lot.

    It's a Christmas miracle! My god s6 part 2 was such a fantastic way to end the BB/BCS universe. Everything that needed to be resolved was given screen time. Saul- I mean Jimmy finally answers for his crimes and of course the climactic encounter with Lalo and the aftermath, one of the most depressing episodes in the franchise. Some people take issue with the slow pacing of the Gene episodes, mainly episode 10 but I think that was intentional to show how boring his life is and why he wants to start conning again, which he does shortly after.

    Thank you for the time and work you put into these. Very much appreciated 🙏

    The mid-season finale and the 2nd half premiere of the final season were amazing and had me very emotional. Howard deserved better.

    I never had the same frustration with the season finale, as I felt the way you did after sitting on it for a while, but that definitely puts a lot of the negative feelings towards the episode into perspective for me. I almost felt worse for Kim because of how she treater herself and her decisions throughout her life after 609. I didn’t even think about jimmy throwing it all away, because I really wanted him to get more than just 7 years. I was pretty mad at him after the Howard situation and rewatching BB knowing it was all weird cope, but him throwing it away made me really proud in a way I haven’t felt towards a show before. Maybe I’m not as sympathetic as some others, so I saw it a little differently, but it was really interesting hearing your perspective! Great video, can’t wait for more :))

    1:26:09 is also a reference to Breaking Bad's "We're done when I say we're done." Back then, it was Walt dictating the terms, and now it's Saul showing us he's continuing to BREAK BAD, and he's racing toward rock bottom!

    I like to think the season finale was a remake of a Christmas carol with the 3 cameos representing the 3 ghosts who visit scourge to get him to change his ways. Mike would be the ghost of Christmas past Walter the ghost of Christmas present and chuck would be the ghost of Christmas yet.
    These flashbacks show the audience the cyclical nature of Jimmy's character with him always never learning his lesson and the need for an intervention in order for him to even have a future outside of scamming

    I still think it's such a shame the show didn't slowly turn back to color as Jimmy kills Saul.
    The whole we didn't want to confuse the audience is so stupid.

    • @stevie8271
      @stevie8271 Рік тому +3

      meh. if that's their official reason that sucks. but i think to have the color return that quickly would've been cheap. James' life can never return to the glory days of years past. he has to live with the murder of Howard & his direct involvement in Chuck's suicide, on top of the merciless drug kingpin he saved. he re-ignited the spark in his relationship with Kim, but it's just that; the flame of the cigarette is the only thing in color. he finally was able to reconcile all the tragedy in his life, but no matter how far you go, if you look back, you can always see the mountain
      i think i butchered the saying but whatever

    I remember being upset at the first gene episode first time around because of the insane stakes set by the previous Saul episode with Jimmy becoming full on Saul, but in retrospect it makes sense because bcs finally reached breaking bad and we needed to know how gene ended since we already saw to the beginning of breaking bad and know how breaking bad ends

    • @dancingharrison
      @dancingharrison Рік тому +4

      But the stakes are extremely high. Jeff could give away his identity, so he makes him commit a crimes. The heist gets very close to going wrong which can also give away his identity. Any minor slip could lead to him getting caught. I’ll never understand why people say this.

    • @stevie8271
      @stevie8271 Рік тому +1

      @@dancingharrison nippy was so tense, especially once jeff slipped. there was no more safety net, nothing pre-determined, we were in the final endgame of the whole gilliverse and literally ANYTHING could happen. the writers had just killed off a character i never imagined would've died; murdered, nonetheless lmao

I haven’t seen the show but I played the game im just not to excited about the show. If you ever get and chance and are up for the task I would love to see a retrospective of a the walking dead. I’m not fully finished with the show yet and it has slow burns and high moments and maybe I’ll feel differently after finishing it but I think you would do a good job explaining the story and feeling of the characters.

    I think Gould and Gilligan inserted the "Better Call Saul" prisoner chant scene for a few reasons. For one, it's a witty self-reference to throw in, but mainly it was a way to add humor to what is a generally grim ending. It's a reminder that as dark as the BB/BCS universe was, there were a lot of laughs along the way. And it softens things for Jimmy- he's almost certainly going to spend the rest of his life in prison, but it won't be as bad as it could potentially be on a day-to-day basis.
