  • Last week, at 6.30am one morning, a member of the public arrived at the centre carrying a cardboard box. This isn't unusual, however, when the contents of that box is an adult female badger, it immediately sets off alarm bells.
    Found collapsed in the rescuer’s garden, the sow was in such a poor state, she was barely responsive😔.
    Just two days after going through chemo, Simon was at the door, admitting the badger, and starting the long process of warming her hypothermic body.
    Weighing just 3.5kg, a third of what she should be, we knew this was going to be an uphill battle.
    With blood tests carried out, the battle got a lot harder, when we learnt the results showed a suspected ingestion of rat poison.
    Rat and other “pest” pellets are extremely in-discriminate, they don't just affect the targeted species, they affect the other species living in that area, and the species that prey on the target species.
    Sadly, despite both Simon and vet Marco's efforts, the sow's body was just not in any condition to fight, and we lost the battle to give her the second chance she was owed.

      Poison and glue traps alike. They do not distinguish between creatures and will as easily kill a rodent as a cat, dog or young child. There's just way too much grief caused by humans putting out such traps everywhere...

    I’m a visitor engagement volunteer at Edinburgh Zoo and when talking about why animals are endangered it almost always includes human activity. Often the least endangered are animals where humans have realised the animals provide a valuable service to them! I’ll keep up with explaining how valuable nature is to us, along with other good zoos, volunteers, education teams etc. You are doing an amazing job, along with others like you, helping local wildlife in need. As I often say, we don’t survive in spite of nature, we survive because of it!

    • @xoxxw
      @xoxxw 10 місяців тому +4

      Please stop spreading the words "zoo" and "good" in one sentence. There is no such thing as a good zoo. The amounts of animals that are helped by zoos are marginal. Most animals you see in zoos are NOT endangered and they are put into prisons to show off what nice collection you have. That's a habit from the colonial times. Remember zoos kept people at some point, too. Also kids are not even learning a lot because the majority of visitors can't be bothered to study the little signs. There are studies that show that kids are even leaving the zoo dumber than before, because they learn that the behaviour in captivity is the normal behaviour of the animal. Nobody would argue that the people working there don't love the animals, however a prison is a prison. Anybody who keeps defending the concept of a zoo is delusional and looks away. Look into the eyes of those animals and then look into the ones that are in the wilderness. You see the amount of freedom they feel in their eyes! There are better concepts that have true respect and support for the animals. Please people, don't support zoos anymore!

      @@xoxxw that’s your opinion. I base my opinion on what I see happening in BIAZA and EAZA zoos. For the zoo I am at, and the RZSS in general, we have been actively involved in beaver, wildcat, pine hoverfly, dark bordered beauty moths and pond mud snail releases in Scotland (and the UK for beavers). Further afield we are core funders for the giant armadillo project and a project looking at preventing road traffic accidents with giant ant eaters. That’s 6 out of 22 projects we are involved in, from core funding to genetic services! The modern zoo, like Edinburgh, Chester, London and many others have come a long way over the past 20 to 30 years. It’s worth having a look, and as many zoos are run by registered charities, just as Wildlife Aid is, finding information on their operations and funders. They all do incredible work for wildlife, animals and biodiversity and ecosystems in general! If you’re ever unsure, have a look, regardless!

    • @xoxxw
      @xoxxw 10 місяців тому

      @@simonmcglary There were many facts among my text, too. I am happy for all the releases and projects that actually help the wildlife. Some good things that are happening don't make up for the bad ones. There is alot of well justified criticism out there that deserves recognition, however the usual response is just talking about the feelgood facts like you do. Zoos are mainly for entertainment. You work in one, right? May I ask, do you have the numbers on how many percent of the zoo's income goes into these projects or sanctuaries or release programs you talk about?

    • @simonmcglary
      @simonmcglary 10 місяців тому +1

      @@xoxxw hopefully this helps. It gives some idea as to the cost of running a zoological society with 2 parks plus everything else. The four key projects that have the funding listed does not include wages of the top staff member of that project. Likewise the conservation and charitable activities don’t include wages.
      Much of the key conservation work happens behind the scenes, much like the breeding programme for wildcats returning to the Cairngorms. By having these animals off show, with as little human contact as possible, increases there chances of survival. It’s why in the zoo community today the animals are part of breeding programmes, they aren’t taken from the wild, and no money changes hands when changing zoos.
      You’re absolutely correct, entertainment is part of what zoos do, it’s one of the 4 pillars. The other 3 are conservation, education and research.
      One other thing that doesn’t come through is that it isn’t just about sending money to projects. Our vets have been sent out to Free the Bears to assist and train in latest care for bears, or remote islands in the south Atlantic for health checks on wild penguins. Sometimes keepers get sent out to assist with counts or researching behaviours in the wild.
      Not all zoos are good, there are many atrocious zoos that should be closed immediately! Zoos that have no intention even coming up to standard for accreditation for the regional association, such as BIAZA or EAZA. Even those that do will be striving to get better!
      You can’t always get an animal back to the wild. As the Wildlife Aid website eludes to, if an animal was born in the wild, the aim is to get it back to the wild. If you can’t, euthanasia has to be an option, sometimes the only option.
      An extremely high percentage of zoo animals don’t know what “the wild” is and can trace their lineage to the zoos of old! Zoos, generally, are changing. When Dame Jane Goodall tells you your chimpanzee facility is one of the best in the world, and preferable over the wild at the moment, you’ve got something right. As we study animal behaviours and cognition we realise it’s about constant improvement and feeds a better understanding of the wild.
      It’s been found that people are more likely to help save what they can see. If an animal is shown well and enthusiastic staff can fire up that imagination in the visitor things can change, starting right outside our doors! Edinburgh has an award winning education department, and that’s from education professionals!
      Not all zoos are good, but not all zoos are bad! Let’s call them animal facilities that do a range of activities for the natural world! Even among the best ones, they all play different roles working with a range of species, from tiny snails to bison, from hover flies to polar bears and everything in between! It all counts!

    I live in Germany, and over the years i worked on/Off in a shelter. And it's Just heartbreaking what Humans are capable of. Not Just adults.
    Trough an Work accident i can't really Help anymore, but i still have some contacts.
    Now, 3 years ago i took two Kittens in after the dead of my old Lady. I didn't want to first, but they where so miserable. One of them was super anxious and No one wanted him, because of that. He was there for month's, growing older and therefore slimmen His Chanced more and more. So i adopted him and also a little black Baby which was very sick and needed a quiet Home.
    They came from terrible conditions. A human who was mentally unstable Had a bathroom full of Cats. Everyone did know, but Nobody did anything to either Help the human or the animals. Only when the human died they HAD to do Something ...
    I know there are good Humans Out there, but it's Just so Frustrating. It never ends.

    I got kicked off the Gardener's World forum for saying that the correct solution to a rat problem was a rifle, because you can identify the species and choose whether to shoot but you can't choose what gets caught by a poison bait, a glue trap, a snap trap or any of the other things people were advocating using ... or tortured to death by a sociopathic cat, which was another thing people were advocating using. I've lost a lot of young songbirds to cats, but never seen them bother with rats. Rats fight back. If you're going to kill a rat, look it in the eye at 6x magnification and do it yourself, rather than killing a dozen random animals with poison.

I stayed, trying to give the sweetheart a bit of water on a leaf. Simultaneously aware that my presence may have caused the badger some anxiety. Why trust me a human?
    Humans had done this. But on another level the darling didn’t die alone. Murdered.
    We have no right. We are a species that doesn’t seem to contribute anything positive to this amazing planet. We are so arrogant. Think we are more civilised, sophisticated. Take out technology away. We are still living in caves, eating, wearing, exploiting other species and the planet. As well as each other.

    That's terrible. I think one of the things you could do is to spread awareness on how to get rid of rats without use of this dreadful rat poison. I know someone who had his house infested with rats. The house was close to the woods. That rats were actually having galleries between the walls. They used rat poison and the rats would die at times within the walls which was really devastating with all that rotting flesh and with little children living right there. Plus there were a lot of deer, wild boar and other animals living in the woods!

    • @sunburstisland2560
      @sunburstisland2560 10 місяців тому +5

      Honestly whether it does or not shouldn't matter. Poisons mess with the ecosystem in a variety of ways. If there are too many of a specific species we must find ways to deal with that species more effectively.

      Not really…it is cruel and orobabky kills as many other animals as it does rats. Including pets.

    • @MayaPosch
      @MayaPosch 10 місяців тому +7

      Not really. On our farm we had a farm dog and cat population to keep the rodents down. We barely ever had to put our poison to keep rodents from getting into food supplies and such. If there's a rodent plague, the cause tends to be an unbalanced ecosystem. That's also why it's so idiotic when you see people kill wolves, foxes, bats and even spiders when it are exactly those who are an essential part of a healthy ecosystem.

      @@MayaPosch I totally agree. If there is truly a problem with some animal, there are many other ways to take care of it. Even endangered animals that pose some sort of risk can sometimes be relocated. Cats are good at keeping populations down, even if some cats aren't exactly humane killers, the population can also scare certain animals away. Outside cats in general are also a sensitive topic since there is risk involved to the cat and other species.

    Yeah I figured once it was poison that she wasn't going to make it. Undoubtedly did severe internal organ damage (just guessing).
