HTTYD 2 is one of the great examples of how to make a great sequel, it's in leagues with Godfather Part 2, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Dark Knight, Spiderman 2, and Toy Story 2

Every scene of this movie was amazing, beautiful and entertaining. I especially like the scene when Toothless remember Hiccups.
drago is able to control the dragon is because he raised it since when it hatched and has been abusing it since it was small and even tho it's bigger than drago now it still has that trauma so when drago screams it brings up the trauma and it will obey

Next to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, HTTYD 2 is my second favorite Dreamworks sequel! I saw it in theaters and I was absolutely blown away by its engaging and emotional story. I laughed, cried, and marveled at how much love was put into this film. A pity that it was robbed of an award by Big Hero 6, granted that is an awesome movie too.
I dont know why but that roar that toothless did when he blowed off the tusk from drago's bewilderbeast it gave me chills down my spine it was very epic🥴🗿

If you want to see even more cool dragons, I highly recommend you watch the series. The show take place between 1 & 2. The show is just amazing. I really think you will like it.
There are 2 series:
1. Dreamworks Dragons: Riders/Defenders of Berk
2. Dreamworks Dragon: Race to the Edge

interesting fact drago can control his alpha because he trained it from when it was a small baby using pain its the same way they used to train elephants the animal is smart enough to understand that if it sees the bullhook (the hook he waves around while shouting) and hears drago scream he better obey or there could be pain but the animal isn't smart enough to reassess the situation and that it is now bigger then drago or the trainer so it simply just remembers i do as I'm told or he'll use the hook to cause me great pain like when i was very small.
also i love the little details in this movie like how we see papa hiccup and drago fighting mirroring the alphas fighting and it also explains why mamma hiccup liked the alpha so much it was essentially a dragon version of her husband (a strong leader who protects his own, with the shape of a big beard). also that the alpha loses his horn mirroring that drago lost his left arm (same as how hiccup lost his leg on the same side as toothlesses tail fin)
The best of the franchise change my mind
To me, the fact that Stoick gets between Hiccup and Toothless, pushing Hiccup out of the way, never considering harming Toothless, and that Toothless's first instinct is not to go to Hiccup but to go to Stoick and trying and rouse him, and before he runs away he stops to look at Stoick again speaks volumes of his change. Stoick's one goal is to get Hiccup out of the way. He never even considers harming Toothless in any way. And early on when he learns Drago is back, he grounds all dragons because to Stoick the dragons are as much his responsibility to provide for and protect as the humans of Berk. By this point in his life, the idea of harming Toothless in this moment, even with his desperation to protect Hiccup, is not an option in his mind. Stoick's goal is to protect them both, Hiccup from Toothless and Toothless from the pain of harming Hiccup under the Alpha's control. It's a brilliant and heartbreaking way to convey a character arc without focusing on said arc. Great storytelling by showing subtly how a character has grown and changed without having to directly address it.
Also I love the mirroring in the shots of the two Bewilderbeasts fighting in the background and Stoick and Drago into the foreground. The good guys take a big hit in this movie.

it isnt exactly a time skip as there are 2 series between the first and second movie race to the edge is one of my favorite series and a childhood series

not maybe, but definetly. According to lore he found the egg and abused the bewilderbeast since it was a hatchling. Similar way people ''teach'' obedience to elephants for circus business. Although at one point the animal is big and strong enough to fight back, it doesn't because it remembers the abusement and think someone can do this to them again.

The series is decent; it flushes out the characters, adds more backstory and information. For example how Stoic and Gober got their repective dragons. However, STAY AWAY from Dragons: The Nine Realms season/series. Nine realms is an injustice to the movies and even the OG series
