    I actually like how they handle Stoick in this series.
    When he dissowns Hiccup, you see him stagger and pause as he realised what said! You can see the regret in his eyes long before they reconcile.
    That's why I think it was important that he apologized to his son BEFORE Hiccup saves them. And makes it clear that Hiccup DOESN'T have to do anything to prove himself!
    And just a bit of symbolism, when he sees Toothless grabbed Hiccup, he has to take off his helmet to hear Hiccup's heartbeat.
    Easily one of the best dad in Dreamworks, though Mr. Ping from Kung Fu Panda is still top tier!

  • @MattTOB618
    @MattTOB618 9 місяців тому +83

    38:14 But here's the thing: Stoick made his apology _before_ Hiccup and Toothless saved the day, even saying "You don't have to go up there". He was fully accepting of the possibility of them both retreating then and there, but Hiccup still decided to do what was right regardless.

      @@iAmPimmiCue Like the fact that, right after Stoick disowns Hiccup, just after he leaves the room, he stumbles back as the weight of what he just did hit him, before he pushes past it to lead the others.

    I feel like theres a lot of nuance to Astrids character that goes unnoticed by a lot of people. A lot think she just starts liking hiccup out of nowhere. And that shes hateful for no reason. But for her, before hiccup met toothless, hiccup was known as a clutzy mess when it came to defending their home. She takes the dragons deadly seriously and now has dedicated her lufe to getting stronger to fight them. But now this kid comes in out of nowhere bumbling how he doesnt want to do anything, yet aces every test shes trying desperately to finish. So she has a huge build up of frustration at anger for him for it.
    But I know EXACTLY when she starts to like him. After they see the nest and shes rightfully saying how they jeed to tell someone, and she says "youd risk our home? For your pet dragon? Are you serious?"
    And hiccup, with the most confidence and asuredness we have EVER seen from him says "yes."
    She is taken aback, but empathetically says "okay....then what do we do?"
    I feel astrid in that moment saw who hiccup was truly as a person. He isnt strong. He can be a mess at times. But he CARES about his family and toothless. You know he doesnt say yes to say "screw them all" he says it to show that he will not offer up his friend for ideals that are not just. She saw he IS confident and has a good heart. Astrid is a very self assured and strong headed person. It makes sense shed fall for someone whos strong...it isnt until this moment tho that she realized he IS strong, just not in the typical viking way.
    ......
    He also took her on a magical flight through the clouds sooooooo....lmao

      Also she criticises him but she doesn't bully him. Everything she says to him sounds harsh but it's criticism. When the twins and Snotlout are just being mean she doesn't partake. In the opening if you pay attention in the background when Snotlout is rubbing it in while Gobber is taking Hiccup home. After Gobber shoves Snotlout out of the way when he gets back up he makes eye contact with Astrid, she glares at him, he goes "what?" and she shakes her head and gets up. She wasn't cosigning that behaviour at all. She never hated him.

    Astrid is a lot more complicated. She was the kid who had taken protecting her village very seriously since she was a little kid. We keep seeing her train even in her free time, it's very likely that being a warrior was all she saw for her life. Then the chief's son joined the dragon training, he obviously wasn't taking it seriously the first 2 times, then he suddenly got good and that was frustrating for Astrid. She became suspicious of him, then she found Toothless. The romantic flight was like a breath of fresh air for her, you can almost see the weight fall from her shoulders, she was able to leave the worries on the ground and just live in the moment. The way she's smiling when she's up there with Hiccup and Toothless always gets me emotional. And when she saw how serious Hiccup was about protecting Toothless she agreed to help him.
    I would write more about her, but the comment would get so long. And yes, Astrid is my favorite character along with Hiccup. 😂❤

    The call it Night Fury cause it has jet black scales that help them blend into the night sky where they can attack by dive bombing at sonic booming speeds and fire plasma blast at their target. They are designed based on cats, black panthers, and bats for their colour and behavior. Manta rays for their wing shape, and a jet fighter for their style of flying and attacking. Night Furies also have retractable teeth so that they won't get damaged whenever they fire their plasma blast.

    Fun Fact: Astrid wasn't in the books, just like Wybie wasn't in the book of Coraline

    • @Edward256
      @Edward256 9 місяців тому +1

      And all the vikings were training dragons from the beginning... Abusively, true, like how one used to housebreak a dog, and so Hiccup taught them a different way. The Dragon Whispere, if you will. ;)

      @Edward256 Admittedly, I didn't read them myself. My younger brother read them, however, and would talk to me about them a lot in comparison to the movies. He was/is very attatched to the book version.

    Big theory is that in order for toothless to save hiccup from the fire, toothless bit off hiccups leg in order to reach him

    • @LangkeeLongkee
      @LangkeeLongkee 4 місяці тому

      I don't think that's a theory I'm pretty sure that's what happened. Hiccups leg didn't burn. And Hiccup references that in the sequel that Toothless couldn't save all of him almost joking that he did it on purpose. The way hiccup fell it wouldn't have been possible for his leg to be the thing seriously injured and nothing else, but his legs were closest to toothless.

    This might be a hot take but I think How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda trump the Shrek Franchise by a landslide. Don't get me wrong, Shrek has great and very entertaining films and they work wonderfully as comedies but I'm just a stickler for a great story with great character arcs. Hiccup and Po grow into their roles as leaders beautifully. Shrek is a decent character with an entertaining arc. Shrek only has them beat with the development of side characters, because HTTYD and KFP have them take a total backseat so that they only really shine in the tv series that stem from the movies. (Save for Astrid in this movie's case).
    TL;DR, I'm glad you like this movie.

  • @novastarburst3939
    @novastarburst3939 8 місяців тому

    Everyone is like "Listen to your son" but did Hiccup even listened and respected his father's orders one single time? All he did was messing around and not taking his role in the community seriously ( even if it's an important one, the weapons are essentials). And when his father finally gave up and offered him to join the training, what does Hiccup say? He refuses. I understand Stoik, maybe he was harsh but at that point it's understandable.

    As messed up as he said it, Gobber is right. "Small and weak" is an advantage. If you don't seem like a threat then a dragon (or any animal) won't feel the need to attack you. Not only did Toothless prove prior to him saying that, but the Deadly Nadder did too during the montage. When Hiccup put down his weapon she stopped her charged and sniffed him.
