James Rolfe discusses the Paul Verhoeven classic Starship Troopers with Justin Silverman, Kieran, and Tony from Hack The Movies. This movie might seem like dumb fun but there are some interesting things hidden beneath the surface.

A Jord wrist watch?! I'd buy that for a dollar.

Good one !
This comment is just as funny as the joke
I want to reference this but.... this post didn't get 138 likes for nothing.

The Rifftrax riff of this movie is one of the greatest things ever.
“You’re it, until you die or I find someone better.”
Mike Nelson: “My wedding vows!”
As a Heinlein fan, it was sweet revenge.
i was a movie extra for Star Ship Troopers. i loved the food they gave us. i was there during their training area. And the high scool football game scene.

"the food was great" XD

James is the oldest of the bunch yet looks the youngest.
What age are the others

@@MrRichiarditya James takes care of himself!
The reason James looks younger is because he vomits out his rage and hatred as AVGN. Its sort of a cleansing ritual.
His veins are filled with money and their's are filled with depression.
If you're gonna get sponsored by a company, this is the way to entertainingly infuse the ad into your video. :)
YOOOOOooooo'D
You're absolutely right!
A wooden watch... It's not some VPN, it's not some clothes you don't care about.... It's a wooden watch... I'd buy that, I never even knew it existed. My favourite things are old things made out of wood, not some VPN crap... gawd I hate bearing

I would have thumbed this up for just that tattoo reveal ALONE!!
My cousin is in the marines and has a tattoo on his back that says, "Who wants to live forever?" He says its from Starship Troopers. I say its from Flash Gordon. And his girlfriend says its from Highlander. Lol still badass.

“Cmon you apes! You want to live forever?!”

Great to see so much Starship Troopers love here! Such a great, underrated movie! Classic 90s.
MetalJesusRocks Metal Jesus Rock. Wow. Small world. I got to meet James AVGN at a NJ show. I got to meet John Hancock over the Summer in Long Island. When you coming to the northeast?
Metal Jesus you review rare games and odd world series
You only have 55 likes.. what the hell man. I used to watch your reviews and just never have time to watch anything anymore. Ill have to head over again. Starship Troopers is amazing!
This has been my favorite episode of this Rental Reviews series so far.

I will never rent from Cinemassacre Video again. I was there today and was going to rent terminator 2 and was told I never returned The Wizard I rented from them in 1992 and there was a late fee James who help me was very rude and asked me to leave the store when I said I wouldn't pay the late fee. I will never rent from this store again! I'm going to Caldor
I'm sure he'd give you a payment plan for that late fee.
It's was too LATE for you I guess (awkwardly shows watch)
I stopped by the other day, and the employee was using all kinds of horrible filthy language! Also, he was drinking a Rolling Rock in the middle of the afternoon.
No dude. What you do to get revenge is to switch out all of your broken and lame video games the next time you rent video games.
I mean....YOU had a late charge. Your fault
That Tattoo tho, what a legend!

You were a bit wrong though, Ogon Bat predates the StarShip Troopers novel by about 30 years, so yeah, Japan didn't t need Heinlein's stuff for power armor fantasy. Mecha also has a more religious association in Japan, derived from Daibutsu.
There's actually a HUGE population of South Americans, notably Argentineans, that have direct or recent European ancestry. So, it makes sense that Rico and the gang look so "white", especially since they're rich. ;)
Fun fact: in the novel he's Filipino.
@@IKKIsama14 fun fact 2: During spanish colonization in the Republic of Philippines, they adopted the Spanish language and some words still used today..
I live in Argentina and can confirm there are lots of people that look like any character in the movie. There are no Filipinos, though. Never knew of even a single one; but hey, who knows what might happen in the future as we transition towards utopian fascism? :D
I already knew that. Why do you think so many are Catholic, hahaha!
@@IKKIsama14 Yep, that's why he is called "Rico", Filipinas was Spanish Colony, and many words and names are Spanish.
I came for AVGN but to be honest, this series is now my fave thing. Keep it up, I love the nostalgia and I love the facts that are dropped that make me view these movies a little different.
Same Luke. Same.
I'm pretty bummed that they did away with rental reviews.
@@vdub1962As am I. This was my favorite review show. I preferred the four man crew, but they then went to three. I think because there was too much over talking. Kieran did a lot of that. I like him, but he never learned to let others talk. Even with three there was still over talking depending who was on that particular episode.
@@vdub1962 I know I wish they would bring it back ...I still come back and watch these..THe ROTOR one and Samuraii cop are classics
Worth to note, the novel is in parts VERY different. For one, the humans are far less stupid (strategy and overall tactics). Cool they mentioned the novel, tho! I see the guy in blue knows his Heinlein stuff.
Yes, they should've discussed that. Heinlein really believed in militarism and discipline as something good, the scriptwriter Ed Nuemeier and Paul Verhoeven satirized that brilliantly in the film. There was talks about a remake with the power armors, probably for the best that it doesn't seem to be getting realized.
@shadowdragoon6 There are an amazing amount of differences between the book and the movie. The book takes great pains to point out the bugs aren't stupid at all and actually build ships and laser weaponry. Also the removal of the Skinnies from the movie was interesting but I can understand it.
@@servadac42 They did a 180 on the book and flipped it from being genuine to a parody? that's pretty interesting.
The novel also doesn't have all the fascist stuff in it. The film is a fine movie in its own right, but it was so sad to watch it as a fan of the book and see that they had decided to distort Heinlein's story the way they did. If they wanted an anti-fascist movie, why not make a story of their own for that?
I have a question was the novel written by and ex-military guy or regular author ?
I have a friend who was in this. He was military at the time and they used a lot of service people as extras in the big battle scenes.
Did he die?
@@tylermunden6642 I don't know. I've tried spotting him in it but I've never been able to. He didn't have an on screen death though.
Easily my favorite movie. I helped Dina Meyer back when I worked in retail. She was really nice and when I quoted the flip 6 3 hole, she gave me a high five and was super stoked to run into a Trooper fan. Good times.
The film appears shallow, but it's just the glossy paint over a much deeper story.
I always thought there was a underlying theme of eugenics in the starship troopers universe, which helps with the mind powers potential.
OMG YES. Please never stop making these. It's my new favorite series on youtube or anywhere else.
(I'm officially requesting you do Event Horizon next)
A RedLetterMedia reference in a Cinemassacre video? I'm gonna just jump the gun and say we need a cross over!

More movies should be like this. Use CGI when needed. Not just because.
I think Marvel needs a bit of that logic
@@noahdavis7406 just a smidge
@@scottieman2 There's a lot of instances where they could use practical suits and effects.

I remember when I was a kid, my Dad and I went to see Batman Forever and there was a preview for Starship Troopers. I thought it looked badass! The preview ended and the entire theatre just burst out laughing.
I laughed a lot at Starship Troopers and I love it.
You must mean Batman and Robin. Batman Forever came out summer of 95, and Starship Troopers came out fall of 97.

The japanese OVA of Starship Troopers is much closer to the book and is really good if you're into classic anime.

The Roughnecks computer animated TV show was AWESOME! I taped all the episodes and eventually got the DVDs. It was definitely more than just a kid's show. Shame it wasn't really finished.
I watched the whole thing as well. It is closer to the book than the movie was. That ending though... what a kick to the balls level cliffhanger.

The Long Kiss Goodnight. I would love to hear a review of this classic
"This ain't no ham on rye."
"I ain't talkin' 'bout the linens."
I saw this in theaters with my best friend nick and his dad, when I was 11...opening night...packed theatre so we had to sit front row. What a badass experience lol. Later I bought this movie on vhs when it came out and watched a lot over that following summer. My favorite movie too due to all the undertones and soace between the lines content. It's crazy how multi layered in depth this flick is. Then I found out it was based on the book...so I got that and the opening sequence of attacks is amazing. The only thing they didnt do in the movie was the jump jet and actual armored suits.
They need to remake this movie, and with today's CGI...would be amazing to see the book into a movie, but staying true to the book. Would need to be done by a reputable outfit and have a good budget. Remake!
They made a game book for Starship Troopers as well; half Choose Your Own Adventure and half RPG Lone Wolf type book with two separate battles as I recall. Interesting book.
I initially was going to return it, since I had wanted the book itself, thinking it was it, due to Starship Troopers has had many covers over the years. But kept it for it's uniqueness. I believe the name is Starship Troopers Shines the Name.
Lmao, that Jord commercial was really enjoyable !
I was 17 seen StarShip Troopers, in theaters , love it! Fell in love with the red head "Dizzy." StarShip Troopers, is all in my Senior book.
God she deserved more movies...just for Her rack
Yeah she was way more interesting than the other lady.
They ain't a problem.
I'm a movie expert and I can say it's really GOOD on it's own category. It's not an Oscar winner or the best acting OBVIOUSLY... but it's really good.
Every Science Fiction fan out there should watch this movie.
P.D. It reminded me a lot of Starcraft.
starcraft was inspired by warhammer, which was inspired by starship troopers.
Starship Troopers is awesome!

I guess not, but people know it is
Naw im good...
Funnily enough, the Japanese anime was more accurate to the book than the films
The book would have been very hard to do live action.
The technology just wasn't there to do the mech suits, nor the skinnies really.
Theres an Anime?
@Todd Jameson The book is better,
Especially since it helped pioneer power armor in sci fi.
Watch the roughneck Chronicles if liked the movie and book its a great blend of the 2 just as a kids show so no boobs or dismemberment but plenty of bug juice, great action, and a good story. Only real problems are due to business things it ended in a cliffhanger and the CGI is kinda dated as it was made in 1999 with ups and downs depending upon the business in the background.
Well that isn't that surprising. The Japanese actually consider right wing views in a lot of their anime's. You just wont get anything near that out of any post 60's Western Film because of who runs Hollywood. Starship Troopers movie was actually meant to parody the book. It kind of worked as the film is funny but also kind of backfired since a lot of people really root for the Troopers despite how over the top they are.
5:14 Red Planet!!! Thank you!!! Red Planet!!! Thank you!!! I enjoyed that cartoon, but for 20 and something years I haven't been able to remember the title! Thank you!!!!

16:25 had me dying, that was spot on man. Oh and your reviews are pretty awesome too. Too bad there isn't a like all button...
I remember the absolutely massive advertising campaign this film had here in Czech Republic. The 'holy shit' factor this film had was on par with Aliens, Commando, Predator, etc. Maybe last such film to have this kind of aura around it.
Whoever said "I never asked for this" did a *perfect* Adam Jensen impression.

Ever since I discovered James was doing movie reviews I've been wanting to get one on Starship Troopers.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time :)
The set and feel of this video is cool! Well done, can see you are all passionate about what you're doing!
Wow such a great discussion on Starship Troopers I also worshiped this movie as a kid. I need to rewatch it now after your guys talk. Never thought it could of been so deep as a kid.
Good old 90s movie. I miss those times.
Paul Verhoven never read the book. He's very anti fascist and thought the book was pro fascism, so he decided to make a parody of it.
The government is actually an elected republic much like the current United States, but there is a distinction between citizens and civilians, and only citizens can vote. There are many ways to gain citizenship, all involving civil service and positive contributions to society, but military service is the easiest and most common. Many people think that the book is fascist when it actually isn't. It's supposed to be about self sacrifice and selfless actions made to support your friends and family, and by extension, society as a whole.
Also, the book goes into detail about the bugs, their allies, and how they attacked Earth. They actually have colonies in our solar system and large carrier bugs that act as starships.
This is because most don't really know what fascism, socialism, communism, capitalism, etc. really are.
Thank you, someone who actually read the book. Like Conan the Barbarian movie vs the stories the only similarities is in the name.
Yeah, Verhoven, being a hopeless commie, tried again to make a stab at US perceived fascism. Just like before, in Robocop, he tried to criticize rampant capitalism. But his attacks missed the point, weren't understood by the audience interested in that kind of movie. And the movies still turned out to be great.
And yeah, he distorted the original a lot. In the original, troopers were fighting using nuclear-powered mecha suits against enemy that presented an existential treat to the humanity, earning the right to vote along the way.
.......bro may i ask where is Johnny Rico really from in the novel?........ is he really from Argentina like in the movie?.........

I loved Starship Troopers. And yes, part of that is because I loved Verhoeven's style of satirizing his movies. But the other part of it is because it's just a funny, dumb movie, and sometimes you just need movies like that. It's pretty much stress relief.

There's an anime called Blue Gender I remember watching and it was basically Starship Troopers. It still had the nudity, the gore and the awesome action. The characters would wear mech suits to fight off the bug creatures. It was really intense!

Im stoked you guys are getting sponsers for this show, i look forward to every episode
Paul Veerhoeven hated the Star Ship Trooper novel - which was not really about a fascist/nazi society - more like hypered-up version of the 50's United States.
Star Craft was definitely inspired by the novel (Terrans being humans and Zerg being the insect race) - and novel mentions another alien race referred to as skinnies (similar to Protoss in Star Craft). I also heard that a remake of Starship Troopers is in the works - hopefully they'll stick to the novel this time around.
actually star craft is inspired by warhammer 40k, but then wh40k is inspired in SST novel
Radkon Psygami like the bugs aren't allegories for enemy countries.
There's a TV show called roughnecks and it might be closer to the book
I hope fascism comes back to stay. We can all fight the arachnids together and expel the Mormons. LIKE WE SHOULD!
They aren't fascist in the book. Its directly stated that the only difference between western society and the Terran Federation is that you have to sign up for federal service in order to vote. Federal service is also a lot more than just the Mobile Infantry/ Fleet, so you don't have to fight.
The original RED DAWN please
4:58 "Issac, uh, Asimov or whatever..." really? lol
lasarousi true. but that doesnt mean u shouldnt know where the material comes from.
Saw this when I was 14 with my two buddies and absolutely loved it. The CGI and practical effects are really well done, great model work too with the ships. There are fantastic elements that Verhooven does so well. For the lowest brow of audiences, this comes off as an explosive, terribly acted B-level action movie. I think that this has amazing sub context and political messages in it. I picked up on that satire even as a kid and I love it more as I understand so much better today. Incredibly well-done movie, the critics have NO FUCKING CLUE how good this actually is.
Starship Troopers is one of my absolute favourite movies ever, so I was very happy to see an episode dedicated to it! Great episode, though I must say I was disappointed that you didnt analyze the joined showers for the soldiers in the movie anymore, but instead made it about the boobs you have seen in movies. But yeah, great episode :D
Love this film! Great episode guys. :)
In the scene near the beginning where NPH is giving rico the test for psychic ability, after he stops for a second to clear his mind then tries to guess the card he actually gets it right but NPH doesn't say anything.
My theory, at the end where Rico is looking for Carmen underground and for some reason he 'senses' where she is, I think Rico has latent psychic ability, even though he says at the end "It was you, wasn't it? You told me how to find Carmen" And NPH responds with "That's classified" He wasn't actually anywhere near the site when that happened.
Just thought I'd share that, because I though someone might have picked up on it.
guessing one card after that many times he was bound to get one right eventually. As for nph we actually don't know the extent of his powers maybe he used Rico to corner the brain bug they were on the planet exclusively to find it
it just seems like they made it deliberately ambiguous. Either way to believe that NPH has advanced from suggestive abilities being able to influence a ferret to being able to communicate to not only a person, but to somebody underground from orbit, just seems a bit extreme.
In the Netherlands this movie was a pretty big hit, probably because everybody understood what Paul Verhoeven was going for with the message
