    Worth to note, the novel is in parts VERY different. For one, the humans are far less stupid (strategy and overall tactics). Cool they mentioned the novel, tho! I see the guy in blue knows his Heinlein stuff.

    • @servadac42
      @servadac42 6 років тому +5

      Yes, they should've discussed that. Heinlein really believed in militarism and discipline as something good, the scriptwriter Ed Nuemeier and Paul Verhoeven satirized that brilliantly in the film. There was talks about a remake with the power armors, probably for the best that it doesn't seem to be getting realized.

    • @killerfurball
      @killerfurball 6 років тому +2

      @shadowdragoon6 There are an amazing amount of differences between the book and the movie. The book takes great pains to point out the bugs aren't stupid at all and actually build ships and laser weaponry. Also the removal of the Skinnies from the movie was interesting but I can understand it.

      The novel also doesn't have all the fascist stuff in it. The film is a fine movie in its own right, but it was so sad to watch it as a fan of the book and see that they had decided to distort Heinlein's story the way they did. If they wanted an anti-fascist movie, why not make a story of their own for that?

Later I bought this movie on vhs when it came out and watched a lot over that following summer. My favorite movie too due to all the undertones and soace between the lines content. It's crazy how multi layered in depth this flick is. Then I found out it was based on the book...so I got that and the opening sequence of attacks is amazing. The only thing they didnt do in the movie was the jump jet and actual armored suits.
    They need to remake this movie, and with today's CGI...would be amazing to see the book into a movie, but staying true to the book. Would need to be done by a reputable outfit and have a good budget. Remake!

      They made a game book for Starship Troopers as well; half Choose Your Own Adventure and half RPG Lone Wolf type book with two separate battles as I recall. Interesting book.
      I initially was going to return it, since I had wanted the book itself, thinking it was it, due to Starship Troopers has had many covers over the years. But kept it for it's uniqueness. I believe the name is Starship Troopers Shines the Name.

      Watch the roughneck Chronicles if liked the movie and book its a great blend of the 2 just as a kids show so no boobs or dismemberment but plenty of bug juice, great action, and a good story. Only real problems are due to business things it ended in a cliffhanger and the CGI is kinda dated as it was made in 1999 with ups and downs depending upon the business in the background.

    • @Sifer2
      @Sifer2 6 років тому +5

      Well that isn't that surprising. The Japanese actually consider right wing views in a lot of their anime's. You just wont get anything near that out of any post 60's Western Film because of who runs Hollywood. Starship Troopers movie was actually meant to parody the book. It kind of worked as the film is funny but also kind of backfired since a lot of people really root for the Troopers despite how over the top they are.

There are fantastic elements that Verhooven does so well. For the lowest brow of audiences, this comes off as an explosive, terribly acted B-level action movie. In the scene near the beginning where NPH is giving rico the test for psychic ability, after he stops for a second to clear his mind then tries to guess the card he actually gets it right but NPH doesn't say anything.
    My theory, at the end where Rico is looking for Carmen underground and for some reason he 'senses' where she is, I think Rico has latent psychic ability, even though he says at the end "It was you, wasn't it? You told me how to find Carmen" And NPH responds with "That's classified" He wasn't actually anywhere near the site when that happened.
    Just thought I'd share that, because I though someone might have picked up on it.

    I actually read the book when I saw the trailer, and then was disappointed in the movie. Buuuuut, the Boobs were great. & The Campy stuff was fun. Funnily enough, even as a kid, I missed the philosophy almost as much as the Suits. Evidently the Director hated the philosophy and refused to read the book, which explains a lot. And the Book's philosophy is largely based on an ethical retrospective of history. The maker of the movie didn't like history, or the ethics, so it wasn't in the movie. It was intentional to twist the philosophy into a Nazi thing, which is never was anything close to in the book. The director didn't believe in the glorification or honorifics of the military and didn't see the difference between a Fascist State and a Citizen-Army State (which would have been more like, say, Republican Rome, which inverted the relationship: In Starship troopers, you had to be a veteran to be a Citizen. In Republican Rome, you had to be a citizen (and propertied) to be in the Army)

    • @stalhandske9649

      Imperial Rome, however, saw a military system where soldiers of the _Auxiliarii_ (support forces for the actual legions recruited among allied nations) were granted hereditary Roman citizenship after 20 years of service, while _legionarii_ veterans were given a plot of land. One such veteran was apostle Paul's father, from whom he inherited his citizenship.
