    So glad you tried this method! For a really long time, I kept my hair curled this way (but to the scalp) after washing it. Usually a lot for tight curls, but as few as three will give nice waves. People thought I had naturally curly hair. :) It's easy, free, and works so well!

      I use sponge rollers, but recently had the experience of someone thinking my hair is naturally curly. Funny how that works.

      I was really shocked back in my school days when a classmate admitted her hair wasn't naturally curly. Maybe we just get used to it a certain way and assume people aren't putting the time in to curl it. :)

    My grandma had written in a scrapbook that she had a neighbor who gave her rag curls as a young girl, and I always wanted to see how they were done. She has pretty bad dementia, so asking her isn't quite an option. So thank you very much for this video! :) great to have some insight into her life in the late 30s/early 40s

    The straight-to-curled look is totally fine! That's actually how my hair dries naturally if I don't twist the top of my hair when it's drying 😅

    I use eight rags with shoulder-length, thick, wavy hair and my normal setting lotion for a vintage brushout. I've gotten the best results separating my bangs out into a big section, rolling that up to the scalp, then taking the rest of my crown into 3 curls, just sectioning to the temples. The temples and back of my hair get separated into 3 more curls, with an extra one at the bottom for the hairs at the nape of my neck. If I follow Loepsie's "preserving a set" tutorial, making five big pin curls around my head before I go to sleep, they last for three days, when I wash my hair next. Really, really nice shortcut, I encourage you all to try!

    I wasn't surprised cause I saw my great aunt and my grandmom doing it many times when I was little in our vacation house but they used newspaper or magazine pages instead of rags =D I do it sometimes as well, especially when I want a 40's look ;-) xxx from the other side of the pond

Your explanation/way you showed how to do it was really simple and gave me the motivation to try again after several failed attempts. And I got it! Definitely excited to see how it'll turn out

      I’m trying this tonight! I have four socks in my hair right now😅 I’ll try to remember to let you know how it goes!

    • @mallory1304
      @mallory1304 4 роки тому +1

      Okay, I tried it with four socks, and even though my hair was barely damp when I put it up, it was still wet when I got up in the morning. I tried blow drying it with the sock still in it, but it didn’t really work, and the curls fell out really quickly. This happens to me a lot with heartless methods (everything I’ve tried aside from pin curls, really) and I don’t know what to do about it!

    • @mallory1304
      @mallory1304 4 роки тому +2

      Okay update! (That nobody asked for!) I finally broke down and bought a setting lotion online, and I guess that was what I’ve needed all along. It makes your hair dry much faster, like to the point that I have to be quick about setting the curls, it’s great! I’ve now switched from socks to strips of fleece like Lucy used (also scraps from my guinea pig cage’s lining, lol) and the curls are still a lot bigger than I want them to be. I’m using 8 strips, I guess I should try 12 next. But the socks do work really great for looser curls! :)

    This looks like it would make a nice base for 1940s or Edwardian styles with lots of rolls and puffs around the face. It's probably the same technique as was used back then for those looks, too! It would also look really nice pulled back with combs, with either a centre or side parting.

  • @peggysue1725
    @peggysue1725 5 років тому

    Oh wow, not bad at all, seriously! The end result is fab, gonna try it out. I actually really like that only the length is curled, otherwise there is a strong danger of getting some real unexpected/unmanageable asymmetry due to natural hair twirls and stuff. You have a pleasant, quirky aestethic style which magnifies your beauty. Def gonna keep watching ur channel.

    I used this method for years but I used socks instead of rags and as many as 10 sections in my long thick hair. These curls look absolutely beautiful if you separate them with your fingers and then leave them to relax a bit.
    I cut my hair and tried it on short hair but it ended up looking a bit too Shirley Temple.

    When I do my rag curls I wrap the hair and the rag round a lipstick tube to make the curl not so tight. You can also use a pencil or something 😁

    • @mallory1304
