Ys VIII is so underrated. It has such a lovely environment, fun exploration, villlage expansion, and a great cast. Even the story turned out really interesting!
I love this guys enthusiasm. Ive played most on the Ys games, except for 4 and 1&2. Ill be playing them after i finish Oath of Felghana. Memories of celceta was the first one I played, it will always have a special place in my heart for introducing me into this fantastic franchise.
Hey Johnny, I wanna thank you for getting me into the Ys series! I picked up Ys VIII about a week ago and it is turning into on of my favorite JRPGS ever. Going to pick up Ys IX next and then im going to pick up the PSP games on Vita. Very excited to play them.
Your Top 5 is exactly the same as my Top 5, just in different order I would put them #1. Ys IV: Dawn of Ys #2. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana #3. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox #4. Ys Book 1 & 2 #5. Ys Origin I didn't start the series though until 1+2 came out on the Wii Virtual Console, but I've played every game in the series and most of the ports and remakes.
I got into Ys because of you, Johnny! I had been watching your videos and Game Sack for a long time before I stumbled upon a Silver Edition copy of Memories of Celceta on Vita at a GameStop on CLEARANCE. I remembered how much you complemented the music and figured what the hell, I've bought games I liked less just for the OST... Now I own every Ys game on Steam :D
Love it when you cover Ys. Like you, I started with the SMS version back in '88 and was blown away when I played Ys Book 1&2 on my friend's Turbo Duo in 1991. Bought a handful of them on Steam like Origin, Oath in Felghana, Memories of Celceta, and Books 1&2 Chronicles. I never get tired of them
Well Johnny , i took your recomendation and picked up Ys 8 straight away, never played this series before and after the first fight im hooked haha thanks bro.
Ys VIII is so far the only game in the series I've played. I picked it up when it released on Switch and I absolutely adored it! I'm definitely going to have to make time to pick up IX sometime.
Ys VII was the first Ys game I played back then on the PSP and loved every second of it. Played almost every Ys game and I'm really excited for Ys IX to come on PC/Switch
I made it 30 minutes into Ys origins and picked up Ys 1 and 2 for 4$. And I’m absolutely blown away by them. I like them much more than origins so far. I’ll go back after though. Thank you for this. I might’ve dropped the whole thing if not for this video.
I’ve honestly never played a Ys game in my life and have no knowledge about them, but Johnny is such a great person and such an enthusiastic person that he can make anything entertaining. I’d watch him talk about politics or talk about the hole in the ozone layer. Last night before I fell asleep I was binge-watching his Xbox X and PS5 vids cause I’ve got the Series X on the way in the mail and was hyping myself up. I truly hope he knows how much he means to us gamers. Don’t ever change, man. And don’t ever stop the HCG show!
I’m currently playing Ys 8 for the first time. It’s my first Ys game after your recommendations. It’s made me a fan ,and I went and bought all the physical Ys games I could. Thanks for the great video.
Ys was one of those game series I always just kind of glanced at from a distance, but around 2014~2015 I decided to go ahead and buy the TurboGrafx version of Ys I&II on Wii Virtual Console and I was absolutely blown away! The fully voiced intro, the amazing music, and yes, I even love the bump combat! I haven't played many games in the series yet, but it always gives me a good time
I completed Ys Book 1 bcs of this channel - what i cant believe is how well they designed the progression of your character, tons of rewarding feelings as you gain items and grind out your char level
I marathon-ed the entire series a few months ago and nearly every game was better than expected. All thanks to this channel. Origin is my clear favorite, followed by Oath and VIII.
Thought you were going to say that your #1 is... ...Phantas-YS-tar Jokes aside it's always a treat watching you talk about this series because your love and passion for it really shows.
Ys VIII is my favourite. It's the first I played so will always be special to me because of that, and the Ys series is the reason I found your channel, so I'm thankful for that too.
I never played any of the Ys series. But I remember seeing it featured in magazines. From advertisements, to sometimes reviews. It has definitely been on a journey
The Ys IV: Dawn of Ys Perfect Collection 1-3 is still probably my favorite Video Game music album to this day, even though it's technically an arranged album.
Y’s Book I & II still holds up to this day. Your review of the game years ago made me go out and purchase this game on Wii Virtual Console. Then again years later when I purchased a WiiU, I re-purchased Y’s once they add it to the eShop. Now I own an original copy to play on my PC Engine Duo. Thank You Johnny Millennium for turning me onto a series that I had never heard of & am now a huge fan myself too.
Man you convinced me to try Ys with your videos. I bought Ys IX recently and finished it this week. And I am now a Ys fan. Already bought Ys VIII last week!
Johnny, I subbed to your channel because of ys series. Coming from China, I'm a big fan of YS series myself. I'd been in the U.S. for five years, and thrilled seeing someone in the U.S. shared the enjoyment got from YS. Really like and agree on most of your ranking. YS2 always holds a special place in my heart, ys origin has a really touching story, and Ys8 is really their best in the recent years.
I just finished Ys VIII recently and man, what a game. The combat is addictive, the story is great, exploring the island feels exciting, and the MUSIC. As soon as the game really started, the music had me turning up my speakers to an obscene volume. Planning to finish Celceta and Seven by the time 9 comes to PC before I eventually get to the rest. Very excited to see what the future holds for the series.
I know this is an older video but i just wanted to say thank you. I'm the same generation gamer as you but unfortunately I missed the Ys games when they first came out. Because of your videos and coverage of them I decided to give them a shot, and i am so glad i did. This is an excellent story and the game play and exploration from even the first games in the franchise still hold up. I have played Ys origin and books 1 & 2, and looking forward to playing through the entire serious. I would love to get an original copy of Ys books 1 & 2 one of these days. Thank you again.
im currently playing Ys origins on switch recently finished Ys 8 and loved it. Going to work my way through the series thanks to Johnny for getting me to finally try them out!
I got Ys 8 on sale several weeks ago and was enjoying it. I watched some of your videos and thought the other games looked great so I checked them out. GOG had a sale on and so I bought pretty much the rest of the Ys series for like, $30-40 total. I've now played through Ys 1+2, Origin, Celceta, and I'm working my way through Felghana. Such a great series with such addictive action and incredible music. Thanks for all you do, you definitely helped me find one of my favorite game franchises.
I just started at the beginning (although The Oath in Felghana was the first one I owned). Almost exactly 3 years ago I got into the series with Ys 1&2 Chronicles on Steam, followed by Oath, then Origin, and then I wanted to play the classics: Book 1&2, Wanderers from Ys, The Dawn of Ys (PC Engine), and I even played Mask of the Sun and Ys V for Super Famicom (the latter of which I think is criminally underrated). Last year I played Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, and earlier this year I finished Ys Seven. The next one I'm gonna buy is Memories in Celcetta, before I delve into the newer games, VIII and IX. It quickly became one of my all time favorite video game franchises, and to be honest, these games were the reason I found and subscribed to this channel! :D
My first Ys game is/was Ys 8 and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! My next game is Ys 9 (both are on switch) and I’m super excited to start playing. Great video! Keep it up!
It's thanks to Johnny that I got into Ys a few years ago. Got books I & II via virtual console for Wii. Loved them! Was blown away by Ys VIII when I got that a few years ago. This is an awesome series if you just started with either VIII or IX! As always Johnny, thank you for putting our minds at Ys!
I get so hyped whenever you do any sort of Ys content! I’ve not played all of them, but my personal favorite is Ys: VIII. I can get lost in that for weeks.
My intro to Ys was Ys Book I&II on the PC Engine Mini last year, in part because of this channel. I had a blast, though those games were super cryptic at times. I've since beaten Ys Origin, and I have Ys VIII sitting on my shelf waiting for me. Definitely an underrated series. The way you talk about it reminds me of Suikoden. I must have beaten the first two Suikoden games at least 10 times and did everything humanly possible in those games. Cool vid Cheers
Aewsome Video Johnny. You showed me Ys in your videos and I love the Series since then to death. Finished Origins yesterday and now I am on Ys six and Seven on PSP. Then I finished all the games in the Series. Thanky for the Love. Greetings from Germany
I was happy to see Y's III was an honorable mention. That was my first introduction into the series. I found it hard at the start but really fun by the end.
I start with Origin fell in love immediately, and VIII is my favorite Ys game... I love every second of it, I love the characters Dana especially. She's a goddess for me even before she becomes one...
Thank you for talking about the Ys series. I have heard of the series but never touched it until a few days ago. I downloaded Oath in Felghana a few days ago on my Vita and holy crap it's amazing! The conbat is addictive. The bosses kick my ass, but I get a great sense of accomplishment after beating them. And the soundtrack is absolutely stellar. I'm definitely going on an Ys binge.
Wauw, I can totally get why that is your number one. Replaying the first book but with so much more. And with the stereo hooked up. That must have been mind blowing. I've never played them but I'm ordering Ys VIII today because of this video. Thanks for sharing these memories.
You got me into Ys VIII and my main regret was not playing it sooner! Will probably always be my favourite Ys game due to the story, but the music in these games is always stellar and I'm really enjoying Ys IX at the moment, though I'm taking my time because I don't want it to end!
YS VII “Memories of Celcetta is Also Really Good! And with it being on PS4 now makes it accessible for many, but the lack of Separate Trophy List from the Vita is Disappointing..
@@turismofoegaming8806 yeah, that one was pretty great too! Great music as always! I liked the idea of different characters having unique abilities, but they did refine it in Ys IX so all characters share their abilities, which I prefer. Still awesome though!

Another happyconsolegamer video?? Yeah! Yet another YS video?! Hell yeah! You got me into this series, years ago. Believe it or not, I actually started with I&II Chronicles, on my Android phone. Might be nostalgia for me, as a 90's gamer but I loved them both!!! Then I continued with Origin (played it a 2nd time on my Switch), what a blast! Then Memories of Celceta and VIII. My next target is IX! Man, listening to you talking about YS never grows old, I made some popcorn and I'm going to relax watching your show. Cheers!
You single handedly got me into Y’s. I started with Origins on the switch. Now I’m almost done VIII. Hopefully Y’s IX comes to the switch. Even with the down grade of graphics, it’s amazing and so much fun. Hands down the best music in any video game series. Thanks man!
What a legendary video to see sitting in my notifications. The way I found your channel was looking up reviews for Ys Memories of Celceta on the PS Vita. I thought it looked cool, but didn't wanna risk buying what might've been a cheap indie game, since I had wasted money on a lot of games like that trying to get my money's worth out of the system... then I found you talking about it and your enthusiasm sold me on the series' rich history, and I've been an Ys fan ever since, as well as an eager fan of the channel. Legendary video man.
I got Ys VIII on PS5 for $20 and it was totally worth it. The moment I got out of camp and heard the music with the feel of the gameplay I was very happy with it. Thanks!
Thank you for making this video. I was going to reach out to you (being the Ys expert) and ask you where to start in the series. But now I don't have to!
Hey man I love this!! Ys is such an amazing storyline and lore that I desperately wanted to jump into but the game styles weren’t really my thing I guess. Then I got Ys Origin for switch and THAT GAME is a SOLID foundation for anyone not totally hooked before they even start into that world if that makes sense. The overall gameplay mechanics/style REALLY brought me into the world. Now I’m WAY more open to actually taking the time to understand those other Ys games I never actually gave the time of day. The story/lore is phenomenal. Awesome video man. Thanks for making it.

I have a soft spot for it as well.
Why is it not the best one like VI it's awesome. Especially since it's fully voiced both in Japanese and English. Has a ton of secret content and the battle is blazing fast
Ys VIII is so underrated. It has such a lovely environment, fun exploration, villlage expansion, and a great cast. Even the story turned out really interesting!
Yep so underrated you cant get a copy for under 80 bucks.
@@AnarickTheDevil It's available on the pc for less than 80 bucks. And is often on sale.
VIII is easily the best Ys, I recently returned to make a video...
So underrated that is universally considered one of the best in the series lol
@@gek3674 Underrated among the general gaming public in the West, I mean, not among Ys fans. Many RPG enthusiasts tend to forget about the series.
Just wanna say that Ys Origin is phenominal, and has one of my all time favorite soundtracks. So frickin' good.
Just started playing so really excited to hear more so far the boss fights are really good.
Is it a long game!?
@@SainteTheGoat Decently? There's three different characters that you can play through the game with. All have slightly different stories.
I know i am late just finished origins and all three characters and the music on silent sand is my favorite
Ys Origin and VIII are the best in the series - love the self contained stories and environments and both SUCH fun action RPGS
I love when you talk about this series man, you're one of the only UA-camrs that mentions it.
Johnny I can tell you 100 percent it's not just nostalgia. I discovered Ys books 1 & 2 on the Turbografx mini last year and it blew me away
Your Top 5 is exactly the same as my Top 5, just in different order
I would put them
#1. Ys IV: Dawn of Ys
#2. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
#3. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
#4. Ys Book 1 & 2
#5. Ys Origin
I didn't start the series though until 1+2 came out on the Wii Virtual Console, but I've played every game in the series and most of the ports and remakes.
Love your work my friend! Thanks for a great video!
Ys Origin is literally on everything at this point, I highly recommend going for it!
Always excited to see a new video from you bro! Hope the family is well!
Ys VII was the first Ys game I played back then on the PSP and loved every second of it. Played almost every Ys game and I'm really excited for Ys IX to come on PC/Switch
The only Ys game I've ever played is Ys Origin, and that was just recently. My interest in the series has grown immensely.
Awesome video!
my top 5:
1. Ys 9
2. Ys 8
3. Origin
4. Seven
5. Oath in felghana
Tho i am still unsure if i like 9 more than 8 atm.
Dana herself is what made me love 8. The music is the cherry on top.
I just discovered YS 8 and I can't believe I haven't heard of this franchise before! Time to catch up!!
Thought you were going to say that your #1 is...
...Phantas-YS-tar
Jokes aside it's always a treat watching you talk about this series because your love and passion for it really shows.
Almost exactly 3 years ago I got into the series with Ys 1&2 Chronicles on Steam, followed by Oath, then Origin, and then I wanted to play the classics:
Book 1&2, Wanderers from Ys, The Dawn of Ys (PC Engine), and I even played Mask of the Sun and Ys V for Super Famicom (the latter of which I think is criminally underrated).
Keep it up!
I played through YS 9 and it left me wanting more and YS 8 more than filled that need it's a must play.
I've never played an Ys game but I knew which entry you were introducing each time just from watching all your vids abt it over the years
Great choices. Ys Book I & II and Ys IV on PC Engine CD are amazing.
It's thanks to Johnny that I got into Ys a few years ago. Got books I & II via virtual console for Wii. Loved them! Was blown away by Ys VIII when I got that a few years ago. This is an awesome series if you just started with either VIII or IX! As always Johnny, thank you for putting our minds at Ys!
i love your positivity brother!!!
Ys book I & II for the TurboGrafx 16 got me hooked, thanks for the great video Johnny.
Cool vid
Cheers
Aewsome Video Johnny. You showed me Ys in your videos and I love the Series since then to death. Finished Origins yesterday and now I am on Ys six and Seven on PSP. Then I finished all the games in the Series. Thanky for the Love. Greetings from Germany
You really are selling me on this series. Ys Origin may be getting another sale soon. Thanks for your awesome work on this video and the rest!
My first Ys games are 8 and origins just need time to play them. Your passion for the series made me want to try it.
One of gaming’s most underrated series. Would be interesting to see a video of which Ys games to play in order of story.
@@karlwest49
Yeah I’ve not got to play that one yet..
I think I might get it from my PS4 soon
I came back to Ys with Ys VII, and man what a blast. You sure did your part to make me love the Series even more, thanks for that 😉. I'm playing Ys IX right now.
My Top 5
5. Ys Origin
4.Ys Book I & II
3. Ys IV
2. Ys VII
1. Ys VIII
Cheers!
Actually never even heard of Ys till I discovered your videos years ago... Only played 8 so far but still haven't finished it, loved it though !
I've played the Ys series since the master system days too.
Holders of Power boss music still gives me chills to this day.
Ys 2 is so great because you learned how the bump system works in 1. And it just expands so much on the world. Everything is just refined.
I just started Ys IX as my first game in the series. Look forward to trying some of your favourites too sometime
You single handedly got me into Y’s. I started with Origins on the switch. Now I’m almost done VIII. Hopefully Y’s IX comes to the switch. Even with the down grade of graphics, it’s amazing and so much fun. Hands down the best music in any video game series. Thanks man!
Ys 9 is coming to switch. It was already announced a while ago. I ordered the limited edition on the NIS america store. Theyre sold out tho
Just want to say I think k I've watched this video 50 times now, your the reason why I know what YS series is and why I love it now!
Thanks for making this video. It helped me get my first Ys game. I'll get 9 and then origins and then 8!! Thank you!
My first Y's was Y's3 on the SNES, later I got a Turbo Duo and played Y's1-2 and was blown away. Still my favorite one.
This was funny to hear! Me and my friends just powered through Ys 1 over Discord and had a blast!
I just finished Ys VIII recently, absolutely adored it!
I was thinking "Man Johnny should really do a top Ys games video". Well lo and behold! You made me want to try this series and i cant wait to play the rest of them!
Here's hoping to hear you talk about Ys for the next 20 years as well!!
Cheers!
Love your passion for this series. It has not quite grabbed me yet,but other series like the tales series took time to grab me,so i think this series will eventually.
Started playing these games a few years ago based on your recommendation. I love all of them that I've played, and im currently working through Origin and absolutely loving it
I've played most of the series and my favourite has to be ys chronicles on the psp which was a remaster of ys 1 and 2. Absolutely loved it and the soundtrack was absolutely amazing. I would not have played that game or the rest of the Ys games if it wasn't for this channel so thank you.
If you did make a massive video where you talked about the Ys series for 12 hours then I'd be here listening. 100%.
WOW! So spooky...Literally just started my Ys adventure yesterday by starting to play Ys 1&2 on the PC Engine. I’ve beat the first boss, got the first book and I’m totally sucked in. I was listening to the OST on YT while working today and this video pops up in my list :)
