I remember calling 1-800-USA-SEGA twice during my Phantasy Star adventure. Once to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do on the ice planet Dezoris. They were like "You've gotta use the ice digger to drill through the mountains to find a lonely tree and steal its nuts". And then towards the end when they were like"You have to turn at this random place to find the hidden door to fight the final boss". I never asked for any maps. I just memorized and guessed my way around each dungeon.

I used call as many of the game companies I could find a phone number for.
Back then I'd call them and ask for whatever promotional advertising they had and many of them sent me some great stuff. SNK, Sunsoft, Tecmo, Tradewest, Acclaim, Nintendo, and Sega all sent newsletters, posters, letters, and more. Being a comic book collector, and all around OCD packrat from an early age, I kept all of it and have since been scanning and sharing it.

I was so excited for Phantasy Star II that I bought it before I had a Genesis to play it on. It cost $90.00 US at the Kay-Bee Toys that I worked at, I was making $3.50 an hour at the time. But my boss said, if you want it, you better get it now because we only got two copies and we probably won't get restocked (and we didn't). I read the manual over and over for months, at my homework desk, in bed before sleep, on the toilet, until I finally scraped enough money and NES trade-ins to finally get my Genesis from a local reseller. I will forever remember my first time playing it, the music and graphics blew me away and all I could think about in school was getting back home to play it again. It boggles my mind now that this was thirty years ago, it doesn't seem that long ago...

I played Phantasy Star on my Master System back in 1992, when I was 8 years old, and couldn't cope with it at all. I didn't understand English (it wasn't localized for the German market) and I got lost in dungeons and mazes and they actually scared me. And yet I felt this game was special and I was blown away when I accidentally flew to another planet.

I'm glad Phantasy Star ended with 4 because it does make the ending all the more special and impactful. How many games do we get today that basically end with "to be continued" no, you did it, you beat the thing that's plagued this solar system for so, long and now it's time for peace.
The only continuation would be ...continuing from the spaceships from 3, but who'd care about that given the status of the 3rd game ?
Phantasy Star 4 is that RPG that I've asked many an rpg fan to try and they always, skip it because it was on the Genesis, if it was on the SNES they'd be on it because of their strange bias. Such a great game that deserves to be played. It's not even that long compared to many rpgs these days.

A single God existed in the universe's infancy which split to the Great Light & Profound Darkness. The Profound Darkness was banished and sealed away using the 4 planets of the Algo Solar system.
In 2 Parma was destroyed, ultimately weakening the seal and allowing the Profound Darkness to try to slip through. Dark Force was just this being getting the foot into the door to destroy the seal.
You kill the Profound Darkness in 4, no more Dark Force, no more Lashiec.

@@jc.1191 I didn't see this post till now so, sorry for the delay.
I think 4 is the best of the series. It's mechanically super good, has a lot of attention to detail. Has a solid story.
It continues the story of 1, 2 and maybe, 3. 3 is the blacksheep apparently. It was done by a different team, is way weird in terms of the story vs the others as well as the gameplay. Not bad but it's different enough that it's off put fans I believe.

So rather than traveling from planet to planet and dungeon to dungeon, I'd look at a guide to find that one specific item or weapon to progress. It would've taken me at least twice as long without a guide to refer to. I truly commend anybody who finished the game with no outside help whatsoever; truly a feat.

Bro! that looks just like my experience but in reverse. I grew up a Nintendo kid and played FF on NES as it came out, and then FF2 and 3 on SNES and all the other great Square rpg. But my good friend down the street had a Genesis and I'm SO glad that he did because I got to watch him play Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4 as well as Shinning Force 1 and 2, and many other games. And let me tell you, PS and SF made such a BIG impression on me(as much as the Square games did), I was mesmerized by those games. I think the setting and atmosphere of PS and the manga panel-style cutscenes were the biggest contributing factor. We even incorporated tons of characters and lore from PS in our D&D campaigns. I'm so glad to have memories of seeing PS and SF as a kid. Especially since they're tied to D&D memories as well (we also incorporated FF stuff in)

I'm playing Phantasy Star 1 via the Nintendo Switch "Sega Ages" collection. I'm really glad they added the auto-map system, but otherwise I'm playing it mostly legit--no walkthroughs unless I get stuck (the one time I did it was because I didn't realize you were supposed to walk over the lava damage-tiles on the World Map to get to the places you need to go to get the stupid spaceship robot). It's a really fun experience, but I have to say the automap makes it so much better to explore the dungeons. I have trouble getting into those kind of first-person labyrinth sorta deals at the best of times, so having an easy way to get, and keep, my bearings is crucial. Now that I'm into the swing of it, though, I am having a blast.

PS1....Wow...What great memories....By far my favorite game of all time. This game is the reason I subscribed to your channel :) This game is the reason for many of the fruits I've enjoyed in life. First played it back in '88 when I was 12 on my Sega Master System. I was living overseas in the Caribbean, Dominican Republic as a kid. I remember seeing a preview of the game on Electronic Gaming Monthly's magazine. It was boasted as the biggest game of all time "4MB" lol. The graphics looked amazing for the time and I was really into rpg's so naturally I was intrigued. I recall staring and drooling at the pics in the magazine for hours on end and showing my friends the artwork. Began a countdown to until I finally got a fresh copy of the game for XMAS. I had a family member bring me the game from New York since he was gonna be on the island for vacation. I was very, very, very lucky. In 1988, it was probably only me and maybe 5 other people who owned a Sega Master System in Dominican Republic. So buying it or games for it at the local retail store was out of the question since the market was years behind the rest of the world. The Atari 2600 was all that was available locally at the time and NES just started making its mark. I also had received a copy of the December '88 EGM Magazine end of the year video game awards. I wish I still had a copy of that mag smh, oh well. Phantasy Star was voted #1 for best graphics on any console that year which got me super hype to play. I was off from school for 2 weeks and all my friends came over to check this game out. At first, it looked terrible. My boy was like its just a lil girl in a skirt running around with a sword in her hands, this game sucks. I payed no attention to him as I was already heavily invested in this game. Believe i paid $80 for PS1. However, I will never forget the look on my friends faces when I went into my first dungeon on Paseo. What a game changer this was.1st time we've ever seen rpg 3D graphics on a console. From then on we were hooked. The music, the graphics, the bosses, the fighting and leveling up system, the sidekicks you rolled with, the challenges, the weapons and armor and spellcasting, everything Laconian, the vehicles and most importantly, the story line, where on such an epic grand scale its almost impossible to fathom now that they did it all to perfection on 4MB of memory. Took me a good 8 months to beat. I almost gave up as I was stuck on Dezoris try to find Laerma nut for Myau. But by now a few of my other buddies were playing and my cousins in NYC. My cuz sent me a copy of Phantasy Star 1 strategy guide and I was able to finish the game. Like you said Johnny no internet in them days. So any intel gathered was gold for this game. As the years went by I managed to beat all the sequels but nothing ever held a candle to the original. I did like the Dreamcast version which if I'm not mistaken was the 1st ever console online game or rpg. I got into the emulation scene and rediscovered this gem again in the late 90's. First on PC, then on countless modded consoles over the years even having a portable version on a modded SONY PSP aswell. This game has managed to stay in my life for 30 years!!! Now I have it on my phone and tablet. It is what I always play to kill time. Memorized the entire game. Can run thru it in about 3-4 days now. And that's only because you have to level everyone up for big boss fights. I just can't think of any other game that has consumed so much of my time. I can never get tired of it. Thank you Happy Console Gamer for keeping this gem alive and introducing it to the younger audiences they may not know about it. You are the man!!!

I played my brother's game when he wasn't around and one day I accidentally found the hovercraft. He couldn't believe it! Anyway, I'm playing it now on the switch with the Sega ages version. I'm mind blown as to how well it holds up. This game was wayyy ahead of its time. I'm currently on Dezoris. The mazes are much easier with the mapping system that it always needed. Awesome experience, I'm playing it as much as I can and I have two little kids running around the house! Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience. 👍😁

I first seen 4 on a magazine, but couldn't play until much years later on a emulator.
I really like this series, but love the 4th

Oh thanks for this episode brings so much memories!! tears in my eyes!! Replayed PSIV on the PSP last summer and finished it... still feels good! Trying to redo PSII quite rough but still enjoyable, love the music in the 2nd one! Unfortunatly there is no other way to play the 1st apart from owning a Switch or emulation!
    Thank you!!

So happy you guys covered this series. I remember a friend of mine beating the Phantasy Star II in 6th grade. (my state in the USA didn't have middle school yet). It was the last day of school and our teacher allowed us to bring games that day to play all day. She even allowed us to hook up our console to the TV. So my buddy brought his genesis and Phanrasy star II. It was epic to have to face mother brain right after a grueling fight with dark force. Phantasy Star II and IV are by far my favorite games. Like you I'm dying for a Phantasy Star V. Was so hoping one would come out for the GameCube but it was Phantasy Star Online. Totally different and not what I wanted. Ugh

So nice to see this video. Love watching both of your channels, and Johnny your Phantasy Star videos over the years and just your general love and nostalgia for the series has helped me gain my own sort of nostalgia for it over time. So happy to see it released on Switch now! I think this resurgence in retro RPGs like Octopath combined with such dedication from fans like you for series like Phantasy Star will go a long way towards exposing more players to great games and great series such as this one.

Phantasy Star III was not meant to be a sequal to PSII, it was originally devloped as a spinoff called "Phantasy Soldiers". Thats the reason its so diffrent from the other.

I played the first one way back in high school on my Genesis but never played the sequels until now. PS IV is definitely one of the most exciting and well paced RPG’s I’ve played so far, retro or modern.

Maps?? Spent a lifetime looking for the Laconian Armour . Found it by writing to a games mag for a back issue which had a walkthrough of the game.
When it arrived I was at work but went home "sick" then rang my manager, who was also playing the game, to tell him I had found the armour.
Mad, if I did that today I would be disciplined by my company but such was the joy of finding that armour nothing else mattered.Ho and I was about 30 years old at the time

You don't know how many times I called 1-800-USA-SEGA!!! And yes, they had secrets to pretty much every game and they'd read you how to get through points of the game if you're stuck and give you more tips in general. There was this lady Sandy that I'd write letter (snail mail) back and forth with and each time, she'd send me tips for pretty much any game I asked for (and more), printed on paper and I'd receive this yellow packet in mail, completely free. This is when Tonka was in the picture. Eventually she sent me multiple volumes of Sega newsletters (remember them?) and extra posters... I remember one of the newsletters had Altered Beast on the cover. Good times!

Sega's 7th Dragon 3 is still the closest thing to Phantasy Star V Sega has created despite being very much its own thing. However, it's produced by Rieko Kodama and its really dark & tragic scifi-story/world brings Phantasy Star 2-vibes like nothing else. Not to mention the melancholic OST by Yuzo Koshiro. Really strong combination of hard scifi & fantasy, developed by Sega, quite recently even.

Phantasy Star! Oh, the memories. 1988! It was the most expensive game I had ever bought. Cost me $80 & the only place I could find it was at Macy's, locked up in a display case at Georgia Square Mall in Athens, Ga. I played the game while my roommate mapped out the dungeons on graph paper for me. Those dungeons confused me. Would have never survived if my roommate hadn't mapped out those dungeons for me.
