      I actually don't think it's that bad of a movie. I see why people wouldn't like it, but, I personally enjoy it. Much better than the 2008 movie...

      I actually quite like this movie. No, it's not fun (outside of the few action sequences that ARE present, which I enjoy), but I find the ideas too potentially fascinating to really care.
      I think people would gravitate to it more if it came out now, what with all the folks clamoring for comic book movies that deviate from formula.

      @JamUsagi 5 років тому +24

      @@gracekim1998It doesn't need to be a fully animated movie to have an animation-like style. Just look at Detective Pikachu - it has an entire world in the Pokemon style, and it meshes that perfectly with the live-action format. (the Pokemon's models are actually real-life objects too)
      Let's say instead of overusing comic book transitions and special effects, the Hulk movie went for the harsh black shadows and powerful action poses that comic books are famous for. That could actually work extremely well as a style, would translate well into a movie format and probably make lighting any CGI models a lot easier.

    I think Ang Lee was trying to focus on the tragedy of the Hulk. That's fine and gives way to some interesting thought provoking ideas, but there needs to be balance. You need to add humor, actual acting (these performances are incredibly bland, and these are decent actors), more action (It's the freakin' Hulk man!!) and, by God, control the scene changes. I know it's a comic book movie, but, good lord these transitions are really distracting. The only good thing about the movie was Danny Elfman's score. And that's my two cents on the matter.

  • @b3rz3rk3r9
    @b3rz3rk3r9 2 роки тому +54

    In all fairness, Ang Lee isn't a bad idea for a director of a Hulk film. The Green Giant's best stories usually have a focus on either being super destructive or explore Bruce and Hulk's psychological dealings. The best one, imo, the Wprld War Hulk Saga, does both. It has Hulk and Banner sort of fuse into one being in order to survive the planet of Sakaar, and even be joined in one purpose after facing a painful death of someone close: the punishment or death of the Illuminati. It's not that Hulk is angry at this, but that Hulk AND BANNER are BOTH joined in a shared hatred of his former colleagues over that death, and are one in action and thought to wage war; hopefully for one last time.
    It's essentially Marvel's first attempt at a true Epic, with how many changes the characters go through, how expansive both Earth and Sakaar are, and from how much Hulk and Banner grew.
    I say this because Ang Lee is ideal for the emotional depth of Hulk and may even be best suited if given a producer or helping hand that can assist with an added Horror aspect that really makes Hulk's stories pop. The main issue, to me at least, is that Ang Lee had too little understanding of the characters and didn't do his homework as effectively as when he did Crouching Togdr, Hidden Dragon. Which explains another, seeing as it's the _execution_ of the ideas that screwed this movie over, and not the ideas themselves.

    Honestly, one of the reasons I like this film even despite all the flaws pointed out is that it's the only Hulk film that was willing to try and experiment. No, it doesn't always pay off and it definitely runs too wild with the surreal shit and melodrama, but it's definitely trying to do something mature. Hell, given the advent of more serious, character-driven superhero works like The Dark Knight and even the comic-book style editing of Into the Spider-Verse, you could even call the movie a bit ahead of its time. The Hulk stories have spent a long time exploring psychological trauma and using the Not at All Jolly Green Giant as a metaphor for said trauma, so to see a film that does attempt to pay justice to those themes, even if it doesn't succeed as much as it stumbles, is really admirable to me.
    Plus, I'd like to see MCU Hulk try and hammer-toss a 100-ton Abrams tank half a mile into a sand dune.

    Ang Lee performed the Hulk through motion-capture technology.
    According to the ILM animators, the Hulk's stats are as follows:
    * He weighs 3,452 pounds (1,565.8 kilograms).
    * He can exert 14 tons of pressure per square inch.
    * His skin is ten times as strong as Kevlar.
    * His chest measures 17 feet and four inches (5.3 meters).
    * His waist is 12 feet and ten inches (3.3 meters).
    * His feet are four feet and three inches (1.3 meters); if he wore shoes, they would be (U.S.) size 87.
    * His neck measures six feet and nine inches (2 meters).
    * He can move at a top speed of 300 miles (483 kilometers) per hour and cross three to four miles (4.8 to 6.4 kilometers) in a single jump.

    Ang Lee employed the split-screen technique to cinematically mimic the panels of a comic-book page. This required many takes of one scene, which was draining for Eric Bana. It took him four takes to film Banner's first Hulk transformation, and by the time of its completion, he was on the verge of collapse.

    The role of Betty Ross attracted Jennifer Connelly since she found Ang Lee's vision of the Hulk interesting: "He wasn't talking about a glossy fun-filled kids' movie about a green guy running around in tights. He was talking along the lines of tragedy and psychodrama, the green monster of rage, greed, jealousy, and fear in all of us."

    The dim lighting during his first appearance makes the Hulk occasionally look grayish-green, an homage to when he was gray in his May 1962 debut comic. The publisher couldn't print gray very well, so Stan Lee made the Hulk green, simply because other characters hadn't used green much.

Ironically, the film was criticized as being an overly serious superhero film.

    The frog used in the nanomed experiment named Freddie is fake. The crew pumped air into it to make it look like it was breathing. They used a prop frog after the real one proved not to be as lively as the fake.
    The Hulk was originally supposed to be an animatronic.

    The Incredible Hulk (2008) rebooted the film, intending to fit the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, as Marvel has the production rights to make a film with the Hulk, Universal Pictures still maintains distribution rights to any film starring the character in his own solo film. Thus, Marvel Studios produced The Incredible Hulk (2008), but Universal Pictures distributed it.
    For the dog fight scene, a trainer and dogs wore motion-capture suits.
    Bruce's dreams are primarily green and purple-colored, the Hulk's signature colors. According to production designer Rick Heinrichs, those colors follow Bruce throughout his life as a theme.
    Eric Bana wasn't a fan of the Hulk comics that inspired the film, but he was a big fan of The Incredible Hulk (1977). Bana explained, "I was obsessed with the TV show. I was never a huge comic book reader when I was a kid but was completely obsessed with the television show."
    Jennifer Connelly later played Karen, the A.I. voice in Peter Parker's Spider-Man-Suit, in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).
    According to Ang Lee, Rhiannon Leigh Wryn cried so much because she hates ice cream.
    Hulk's face was modeled after a few different people, including director Ang Lee, Eric Bana, and Jennifer Connelly.
    The Hulk doesn't appear fully until around 42 minutes into the movie.

    5:35. Their usage of comic book look looks like the comics they portray. Ang Lee's comic panel style is not from any iteration of the Hulk comic, it's just him slapping a generic whacky comic book look over the story of the Hulk.
