- This tutorial covering the basics of how to create a new airport in the game, specifically focusing on Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport in France (ICAO:LFLC).
This airport does not appear in the game even though there is map data for it, probably due to a portion of the airport being pixelated out on Google Maps.
This third part of the tutorial covers how to improve upon the taxiways and parking to allow for ATC and AI to work with them. It also shows how to add an ILS approach to an airport.
Some of the content in this tutorial requires manually editing the project xml as the Microsoft Flight Simulator SDK currently does not support adding communication and navigation data to airports via the in game editor.

Dude, you are fast becoming the first person to go to for anyone considering modding this excellent sim. Correction, the ONLY guy to go to. Thanks for taking so much time to a) Learn all of this and then b) bringing it to the World in a way that the majority can follow.
For anyone who may be having issues getting the Tower and ATIS frequencies to show up after setting them, make sure you are not using Navigraph navdata when testing your airport. Any frequency data used in your airport is either overwritten (existing airport) or erased (airport from scratch) by Navigraph data. Also note that, for the ATIS, just enter the ICAO code of your airport. It will most likely not work if you enter anything else.
The latest versions of the airport editor now have a user interface to enter the frequencies so you don't need to manually alter the xml file any longer. Click on the airport in the scenery editor and then view properties, scroll down to frequencies.

How do I deactivate Navigraph navdata for the airport I'm working on?
@@EduardoMCfly You can't remove Navigraph navdata ONLY for one airport. It is all or nothing as far as I am aware.

If you want to add a DME to your ILS, that's also possible. Here is an example that I made:
The only problem is, if you save your scenery, then this part gets overwritten. So you have to put it in your XML after every save before your build you package...

Once again, thank you very much for such extensive tutorials. I made an airport from scratch, and created the ILS as instructed, but it does not show as an option when selecting arrival airport. I hope there is a fix for that. Also, the new SDK has custom ILS option in the runway properties now. I tried it but it always gives errors. Hope you make an update for that...

In the video is shown, magvar = 0.0. The result will be the airplane heading is different from the Course. In an airbus the magenta ILS arrow will be left or right from the green rhombus which shows the heading. In ILS-Mode of the Navigation Display the magenta line will also be wrong.
SDK:
"Magnetic variation at the ILS beacon to True North in degrees. Negative for values to the east and positive for values to the west, measured in degrees between -360.0° and 360.0°."
and for Runway Start:
"Angle compared to true magnetic north which the plane will face when starting, measured in degrees between -360.0° and 360.0°"
Example:
ILS = 315°, magvar = 0.0, Runway Heading = 315° => Primary Display LOC captured => The Nav-Display shows magenta 8 degrees left of the Heading = 323° because magvar = 8.0
The correct data are:
ILS = ILS = 315°, magvar = 8.0, Runway Heading 315 => ILS needle and heading will be at 323° degrees
Some experiments with an airbus would show the results of changing these values
These are fantastic tutorials, but slowly and slowly it's revealing what a reasonably good tool it was that ASOBO made for MSFS2020. Some thing seem a little bit odd, and I feel sorry for the company they outsourced it to, but all those features to link taxiways together was amazing.

@Flying Theston Great tutorials. I would love it if you could explain how to set up a working Approach for the ILS. I've tried copying approaches from the sample file, but I get a crash to desktop as soon as I select the approach.
Any chance of an update on this one as things have moved on but setting ILS remains a challenge. Neither runway properties or XML editting have worked for me.
Can you do a tutorial on the new ILS implemented in the latest SDK 0.8.0.0? It's an option in the properties when selecting the runway. Under VASI. Don't know what the ident, magvar or ranges should be. Thank you.

For the ILS setting, it looks like there is a common bug with all scenarii created via sdk or direct xml, that makes the autotuning of these ils not working in the FMS of jet planes. This works with all default airports, and there is a workaround to have it work with the xml, but there really is no documentation about that. Did you encounter that issue?
Hello. I subscribed to you for a long time, you make very good tutorials. Very detailed. I create my own airport, and it is completely new, its ICAO is not in the simulator, it does not have lighthouses, entries and ils systems. I'm trying to set up an ILS in the SDK, but apparently some more data for an empty airport is needed for correct operation. In SDK samples there is a navdata sample with approaches and entry points. Could you do a simple tutorial on how to set up an ILS system in a new empty airport, there is very little of this on the internet. Thank you so much for what you do for the community.
When I've set Ils for the runway and exported them into Community folder, the ILS doesn't appear on PFD, what should I do

Hi, I am trying to add Comms freq's. The file layouts seems to have changed since this video was made. I found the relevant xml in the the airport.xml, but when I follow this video and add the relevant section, it still doesn't show in the sim, but Little Map can see it. Any help would be much appreciated!!
So I've followed this but it doesn't allow me to be able to select the ILS from the world map? Any suggestions?
@Flying Theston, great editor series! Is it possible to create your own standalone scenery (i.e. that wouldn't get over written by the built-in scenery during an update)? I'm thinking of bringing to life an airfield that has been closed and subsequently had housing built on it, as it used to be a place that I worked and gained my PPL, and would like to keep it alive in FS2020. Does custom scenery always override the built-in or do you have to compile it into the main scenery database after an update? TIA.
I’m trying to make a music festival global series.. setting up an interesting location where people can land in a secret grass strip.. then head out in drone view to 3D constructed arena , I just need to find a way of getting music into a small area, I can see some audio setup in the SDK .. it’s way over my head though..

I don't suppose you could do one on RNAV approaches? I'm struggling to adapt this ILS example to the RNAV. I'm not sure where to start.
I have 2 questions... how do you make the PAPI's work? I'm flying around buzzing the ground and the PAPI's are still showing 4 high. My second question is how do you get airport info in your xml? I go to my scenery XML and there is no airport data... I named the airport put the country and the ICAO just like it said in the tutorial but still nothing!

can you confirm if the ATIS is broken in 2020. I've tried to add ATIS via editing the xml and compiling, but no joy. It doesn't even give me a choice to tune an ATIS.
Is there a way to re add ai real time traffic support? Otherwise i'm more than likely going to just keep the airport and remove the open street maps buildings

Is there anything specific on Tiles2Bing installation, or just unzip?
I had this same issue, solved it by installing the tiles2bing folder directly outside the folder I needed converted. Drag that folder with all of your tiles over the tiles2bing.bat file and it'll spit everything out for you into the output folder within the tiles2bing folder.

Question: Do all the taxiways need to be named? I have some that are cosmetic. Cannot get ATC to assign taxiways from clearance. Thx.
No, they don't "need" to be named, they just need to be set up with taxiway paths and points and all correctly connected to a runway taxiway path. Naming them certainly helps though
How do you get rid of unwanted buildings ?
For a small airstrip, where there is no tower or personnel, but just a mobile radio during weekends, which kind of frequency should I set? GROUND, TOWER or CLEARANCE?
I believe it's type "UNICOM" for unmanned towers where you just want to broadcast your intentions

Are you sure about the location of the ILS? The localizer antenna is at the other end of the runway and the glideslope antenna is at the touchdown point. I wonder what the SDK expects you to enter here as "location".
You can enter what you think works best. Both the ILS (localiser) and glide slope let you enter a lon/lat so you can probably put the accurate details in if you know them on the airport

I think the location is important to get correct instrument readouts during approach. My guess is that when you would follow the glideslope exactly (maybe CAT3 Autoland) you would end up before the threshold. That's why I ask.
