I am BMW through & through but these look stunning - a design triumph. And I’m sure they will be superb to drive. Mercedes have knocked it out of the park with these - and a lot of other more recent designs.
Glass roofs rule roadsters. The glass roof experience is decidedly more decadent as appropriate for an SL. Adding backseats was not worth killing the smoothness, the refinement, the airy openness of the glass roof experience. Ultimately the car is 220lbs heavier and less refined to gain nothing of an advantage. Again, with sincerest appreciation, all my respect for the prompt production of this review.
It is heavier mainly because of all wheel drive and a 9-speed gearbox. And the gain is feeling like a proper sportscar rather than a cruising GT. If you want a silky smooth experience with good performance there's also the E 53 Cabriolet.
@@agnusdeiofficial1266 A proper sports car is the AMG GT. If you're looking for a sports car to chase 911's on tracks, I suggest you start there because no sports cars have column shifters like a 1955 pickup truck. But not even awd was worth losing the power glass roof. The SL principle is original autobahn bred road weaponry. Think Maryland to Florida not backroad corner carving. Even Thomas has said R232 is no SL and he's right: the elegance is gone.
@@LawrenceMarkFearon I've had a few 911s and I loathed the AMG GT. Disproportionate hood, crappy visibility, unpleasant heat coming from the center console in summer, stiff ride, stupid smaller diameter rims upfront that's becoming a pandemic (911s, M3s). Far from a daily driver contrary to the 911 or this new R232. Who cares about the shifter when you are using the paddleshifters in manual mode. There was zero elegance about the last two generations as keeping a complex metal roof in the back makes that third box look like a pickup truck in the making. This generation looks so sharp and stylized in comparison, especially that flat sculpted hood almost at the wheel arches level reminding me somehow of the Honda S2000. Considering this car is replacing three very different models at once, they have done an excellent job.

I am really curious how they got to this point of badness. It’s the same for the S class, E class, and the SL. TRY before you buy people….
as an r129 owner, I believe the modern SL should have launched with a carbon fiber removable hardtop, sure the SL was traditionally a soft top car , but it also carried a standard removable hardtop. The devil is always in the details. If I were to drive my car into nyc ,La, or Atlanta, best believe the hardtop would be equipped. Especially if I had to park it in the mall or a busy car park.
For sound proofing and insulation, a modern multi layered soft top like this are perfectly fine. Folding hard top was too heavy especially with the added weight of AWD and rear steering, which are now essential to the driving experience if the car is to competitive. Removable CF hard top would've been a cool option.
@@2JZDestroyer yeah it did. I said it would be cool, but removable hard tops are out of fashion now. Plus not needed as the fabric hood is 3 layered, and better sealed. The R129 of which I own, had a very basic and thin single layer hood with no lining, so the hard top was essential for Winter. Re folding hard top I'm referring to the R230 and R231.
I really thought they were going to kill off the sl, so glad they haven't. Would have preferred a hard top but won't turn you down if you are giving one away!

Surprisingly a lot of blatant cost cutting in MB recently. The seat controls and putting different buttons on one big movable surface is definitely not a good look. People notice this and MB seems to underestimate the customer's perceptions.
Great review. Capacitive buttons in a moving vehicle- I’m not seeing it. My E350 Cab has the older buttons which I much prefer. I use the switch or the key to operate the roof. There is absolutely no need for more ways to operate the roof. Hopefully these things won’t detract from the driving experience.
AMG taking over the entire SL project shows how serious Mercedes is about redesigning the SL. The first SL is the most iconic car in the history of Mercedes Benz and the rounded and simplistic design of this new SL is a throwback to the old SL design especially from the back. The lineup of AMG cars have a distinctive aggressive look to show the power of the car and this may not look like the old SL, but the new SL is not just a luxury car, it is also a fast sports car. Other than the improvement in the performance of the SL, the new SL has one of the most beautiful interiors in Mercedes Benz even though the haptic feedback buttons are not very well integrated. The combination of the S class, C class, and EQS interior brings the best of all three trims into one, which puts the new SL interior way ahead of the competition. The hardtop roof was a consumer favourite and sad to see it gone from the SL lineup, but the new soft-top roof saves a lot of storage in the trunk and provides a 2 + 2 seating for more practicality, not to mention the first SL roadster included a soft-top roof, again bringing the old design of the SL back in a new form. This new SL replaces the S class coupe, AMG GT roadster, and the old SL, which is a very good decision made by Mercedes, as the SL is no longer the middle child, and is now on the top of Mercedes lineup for the best luxury, fast sports car. Therefore, in my opinion, the new SL with a more simplistic design, more power, and a more luxurious interior, is a huge improvement over the last generation and a deserving replacement for the S class coupe and AMG GT roadster. P.S. The back of the new SL is very similar to a Porsche 911 and I will miss the legendary S class coupe design. Lmk what you think of the new SL
For some reason I feel like the design of sportier Mercedes has been worse since SLS production stopped. The AMG GT never matched it in visual design, and now this SL sort of looks a bit.. safe? Hard to describe. The rear end is nice and almost looks a bit like a boxster
Thank you Thomas for another amazing car review! Personally I'm kind of disappointed with this car, animal skin, fake exhaust, bad touch buttons. I don't think people will appreciate this. Also there won't be S-class coupe anymore? Please no, that is my dream car. 😢
Yeah, totally agree with you, the bad quality buttons (together with the plastic air vents) really kill the whole experience, they are an unfortunate constant reminder that this car is not perfect. For someone willing to spend that insane amount of money in this car would mean nothing to throw a few more thousands to have better buttons and vents (maybe they should offer it as an extra). And the little space for the back seats.... I thought they would keep the space from the last Mercedes S class, I thought it was very convenient, but the way it is now it seems like a waste of space, energy and weight.
Autogefühl defaultly makes the best car review videos ever. So detailed and clear. Plus with the little humor. Man... excellent reviews. And also. Ignoring the reviews. Does anyone pay attention to Thomas's jawline? The guy has the strongest jawline among any automotive reviewer ever.😂
Love both of the cars, but it will be quite some time before I can get rid of my current SL (which I love) to step up to one of these newer models. My car was 118k as optioned, (R231)so I hate to know what these models cost. I must say although I love the look of the soft top and always have, I prefer the hard top convertibles sound deadening and better securing of the inside of the vehicle. As for the air scarf I actually love mine. Here in Maryland sometimes it is slightly chilly when the sun starts to drop in spring, but I was surprised just how well the heat on your neck corrects that. With windows up, wind deflector up, and heat on you are totally warm with the top down even on the highway and it is quiet enough to speak with your passenger without yelling. He is correct about the trunk space, that was is huge lol. Truly beautiful cars. Great presentation.
Was about to comment on how beautiful the new SL looks but then at 8:13 there's a 300SL roadster lurking in the background 💜 New one looks stunning though.
In so many occasions, these touchscreens, virtual buttons and one-button-serves-all design are just driving me crazy. How can Mercedes, with so much car design experience, comes up with button designs like these? It made me even more upset when I heard Thomas said Mercedes made these not because of cost consideration. They really think these designs are better? Physical buttons are still relevant, and in many circumstances, still better than these fancy high-tech counterparts. I've just tried out a 2022 Bentley Continental GT. It comes with super high quality, elegant, and practical physical buttons. Lot of them. Of course Bentley's cars also get touchscreens, but Bentely tries to keep them in suitable size and within proper range of function. High end car manufacturers and designers should take Bentley as an example.
I think it’s a mistake to do away with the folding hard top, that’s what really makes the SL stand out and the lines just look too ‘chunky’. My R230 SL looks sleek with roof up or down and still turns heads. I’m not sure this new model will do the same sadly.
Just beautiful…. If you can afford one just buy Thomas your presentation is as great as it can be… Jonas is your best cameraman he brings the best out of you If one can afford one a must buy… the best SL ever…
The R129 is still the sweet spot in terms of design imho. It's perfectly proportioned, and exudes that Germanic look/solidity which the R230 doesn't quite pull off. Even today when you see a mint R129, you instantly assume the owner is of "old money" and has impeccable taste and class. When you see a R230, you just think to yourself, nice car! , but not much else
Metal top makes the car SO much more usable for 4-season use. I have a 1998 SLK230 that still runs great and turns heads. Convertibles are cool, but cold in Winter.
Thomas, your detailed review started my sunshine weekend in California :-) I missed the practical hard top, the classical dashboard and buttons. The long-line dashboard of the new electric EQS looks much more elegant than the ugly big "iPad". This new SL cabriolet design looks fantastic. The two rear seats can be used for storage of beach umbrella and picnic basket ;-) I want to thank Thomas and team for making this enjoyable video and look forward to the next test drive on the fast German autobahn!!!
The fast german autobahn could not live as long as we all want. Politicians want to establish a speed limit. It would be the end of a legendary European road! Cheers from EU, Californian bro!
The SL has for me, always defined MB. This is a fine evolution of the line for sure. Thomas..... How long is the wait for yours, obviously ordered in Thomas Blue. 😁 A decent run around for you, to the shops for milk and bread etc 🤭👍. Please continue calling out #capacitivecurse, fake exhaust and animal skin interiors. 👏
A little too similar to AMG GT? It's a beautiful car. However, I'm not convinced traditional Mercedes customers (especially SL customers..rich, old men) will want something so sport oriented (super low profile tires, firm ride, very low seating position, etc)
Always amazing and fancy those famous Panamericana grill in the front +those back silhouette like the 911 Porsche... Great job Mercedes and the whole AMG team... Greetings from Hrvatska. Have a nice weekend - Thomas and the Autogefuel team!
I absolutely love the styling of this new SL Roadster! I have not found this car appealing since the 1973 450SL (USA) or the 450SLC version. I did enjoy seeing the 280SL in the 1960's (USA), but I don't remember them new in the showroom.
Again a great review Thomas! I know that the ‘rear seats’ are not usable, but looking at the roof opening & closing sequence, a child could be decapitated at 06:26
that interior is 50/50. nice aluminium details, great seats, but then haptic gloss black curse everywhere and one tablet without physical HVAC (at least).... oh, and i would prefer coupe version with steel roof over my head.
I enjoyed the review Thomas. Tha k you. You are the first to mention that the new SL not only replaces the outgoing SL but also the GT Roadster. I was wondering how MB AMG would market both.
OMG you are hilarious! Love the honesty regarding the slide function and that terrible steering wheel with capacitive touch! And the fake exhaust police comment was epic 😂
Excellent Review! The technology and |sportiness| is definitely great but I have mixed feeling about some of the changes, particularly moving into a soft top, adding the useless back seats and making it more of race car rather than the comfy elegant roadster. I could be wrong, so looking forward to your test drive review!
Great review Thomas. SL55 has an identical power to the famous supercharged 55 of the early 2000s. As for the 63 how are they supposed to compete with the M8 with 585 hp. By the time they do and if they do an SL63 e , BMW will come up with something more powerful. Unfortunately they didn't move forward with the rumored SL73 badge. Overall the car looks awesome, very much representing the blend between the AMG GT cabriolet, the S cabriolet( having 4 seats and S cabriolet is discontinued), and the soul of the previous generation SLs.

I get it. I have the R231, and really love it, but these new models have my attention!
beauty... the AMG one... speechless... and that color... very very nice
This red one makes my heart beating💓
Just beautiful…. If you can afford one just buy
Thomas your presentation is as great as it can be… Jonas is your best cameraman he brings the best out of you
If one can afford one a must buy… the best SL ever…
Thanks! Hope you ve also seen the driving review: ua-cam.com/video/PBWxJpB-1eA/v-deo.html
My god! What a car! I need to make some money! I can see myself driving it a lot!
Very informative and entertaining, Thomas. Cheers from Virginia USA 🇺🇸
6:23 I'm getting Iron Man suit vibes here
R230 generation still best looking... And especially sounding...
@@damieg82 R129 is still nice too... With V8 what a nice car for summer cruising...
Metal top makes the car SO much more usable for 4-season use. I have a 1998 SLK230 that still runs great and turns heads. Convertibles are cool, but cold in Winter.
Thomas, your detailed review started my sunshine weekend in California :-)
I missed the practical hard top, the classical dashboard and buttons. The long-line dashboard of the new electric EQS looks much more elegant than the ugly big "iPad". This new SL cabriolet design looks fantastic. The two rear seats can be used for storage of beach umbrella and picnic basket ;-)
I want to thank Thomas and team for making this enjoyable video and look forward to the next test drive on the fast German autobahn!!!
in your service!
bro is mogging us 24/7
Erste klasse,Bravo ,Thomas
Curious if there’ll be a 63s model with ~620hp. Would be a good addition to complete the lineup
A little too similar to AMG GT? It's a beautiful car. However, I'm not convinced traditional Mercedes customers (especially SL customers..rich, old men) will want something so sport oriented (super low profile tires, firm ride, very low seating position, etc)
Well in fairness this is also the replacement for the AMG GT
Another first class review.
Always amazing and fancy those famous Panamericana grill in the front +those back silhouette like the 911 Porsche... Great job Mercedes and the whole AMG team... Greetings from Hrvatska. Have a nice weekend - Thomas and the Autogefuel team!
The rear of the car with top down has a significant 911 vibe.
It does look awesome with the roof down.
I enjoy your Reviews. Thank you...
Getting rid of the hard top was a mistake.
I absolutely love the styling of this new SL Roadster! I have not found this car appealing since the 1973 450SL (USA) or the 450SLC version. I did enjoy seeing the 280SL in the 1960's (USA), but I don't remember them new in the showroom.
I had a new 1971 280 SL! Great car!
@@tedhuddleston1777 That is a beautiful car!
I love the moment when you say: Autogefuhl fake exhaust police ,
Thomas you are the best
OMG... this car is almost too attractive!
Again a great review Thomas! I know that the ‘rear seats’ are not usable, but looking at the roof opening & closing sequence, a child could be decapitated at 06:26
Thought so too
I'm not so much a Mercedes guy, but this is a gorgeous car!
Silver wheels for me 👌🏼
I can not wait to see Thomas reviewing the new Range Rover!
I enjoyed watching the Video. My favourite Is the SL 63
that interior is 50/50. nice aluminium details, great seats, but then haptic gloss black curse everywhere and one tablet without physical HVAC (at least).... oh, and i would prefer coupe version with steel roof over my head.
I enjoyed the review Thomas. Tha k you. You are the first to mention that the new SL not only replaces the outgoing SL but also the GT Roadster. I was wondering how MB AMG would market both.
Thanks Thomas.
🙏🙏
Great video and car! Now if I could only afford one!
Interior needs to be replaced with something elegant though instead of some pointless arcade game.
its so bad...
I hate the huge screen. Ruins an otherwise beautiful design
Much more potential to become a classic than the car it replaces. Awesome.
interior shit look like tablet
This is not going to be a classic.
@@alh06 I think it will because it will be the last one they make. All Electric looms.
OMG you are hilarious! Love the honesty regarding the slide function and that terrible steering wheel with capacitive touch! And the fake exhaust police comment was epic 😂
Nice car
those plastic covers in the back turning inside the cabin are gonna chop heads of the rear passengers or what 😂😂😂
Super schönes Auto! Sehr gutes Design 👋🏻
Wait what the heck I thought you were at over a million subs by now.
OMG AMG NICE CAR! ONE MAN ONE ENGINE!! Awesome😍
hervorragend - im Handel mit meinem BMW
Excellent Review! The technology and |sportiness| is definitely great but I have mixed feeling about some of the changes, particularly moving into a soft top, adding the useless back seats and making it more of race car rather than the comfy elegant roadster. I could be wrong, so looking forward to your test drive review!
Amazing! Non-electric AMG!!!
Thanks m8!
After the odd phase of the SL....the SL is back
Hi Thomas, wow beautiful car, and no one introduce new cars on UA-cam like Thomas, " Thomas pro max"
