Do you mean on the 2022 version they no longer do it? I am in the USA as well. Also you don’t have to point the remote, or get that close to the car for the remote to work. When you peeled out of the parking lot and heard that noise, that's Presafe Sound!!! It activates to protect your ears from the sound of impact when crashing if the vehicle thinks it's about to get into an accident; super cool.
Very good review. I feel like your honesty came through regardless of the effort flying thousands of miles coming to LA. One of the few reviewers with a solid working experience driving every generation SL. So your impression matters to actual SL drivers. Thomas and crew are always FIRST online and worldwide. Danke shön mein Herren.
That sound you heard is because it protect your ear drums. When the car thinks it will go into a accident, that sound is produced in case of a crash and helping you not to loose hearing after. Something like noise cancellation in case of accident.
you know you screwed up when a fellow german says that this feature is redundant and cumbersome🤣🤣.i love your reviews thomas.please keep up the good work and have a prosperous and happy new year😃
Oh my god! you activated the "You're about to crash", white noise, ear preparation noise from the Pre-Safe package! I've never heard it before. you must have done quite a launch!
Thank you for that final verdict! Even if they ultimately had to change direction to bring the non-existing sales up again, this has become just another AMG. The SL had been in a class of it`s own as an elegant cross-continent land-yacht, with the added 365 day practicability of the hardtop and a proper boot. And also, to this day I haven't come across a digital tochscreen solution in a car, that would be more ergonomical and user-friendly than a simple dial or button to push.
Hi, I've never seen a new and impressive 2021 adventure and I love the new 2022 adventures the new Mercedes AMG SL 63 test drive in California was really cool!
Thanks Thomas, always informative and entertaining! It’s a beautiful cabrio - mixing the best of the 3 vehicles it replaces, except for the missing switches with only a few flimsy haptic? ones that made the cut. The steering wheel is also a step back from say the AMG wheel in my GLC 43, though it looks good. Overall, only a mix of existing Merc designs and parts, which isn’t bad; just expected something a bit more adventurous with this release. Still we should be happy that the glorious AMG V8 lives a few more years. 😀👏
Thanks for another great, and most of all, honest revue. As a big fan of r107 models, I agree with your verdict. But I also respect the opinion of it to be more sporty like its roots with the 300SL. I guess it is a matter of what type of car you prefer really. Personally I had hoped for more Mercedes-Benz Classic, and less AMG. Not all Mercedes-Benz have to be aggressive looking. Don't forget elegance!
" ... but it's not a Mercedes SL" the car summed up in just a few words, well said Thomas! Am I the only one that thinks AMG is over dominating Mercedes these days? Let's hope the smaller engined variants bring back some of the elegance which this AMG has lost.
Well, few points: 1. Elegance does not sell, at least according to the OEMs, so they do this aggressive nonsense. Smaller engines won't bring elegance but cheapness instead because that's how germans do things. 2. The SL stands for Sport and Leicht, which is what 300SL actually was. None of the other SLs were that though. Some of them were good cruisers but lazy and too heavy. Only one true production SL actually exists and then the brand shifted towards old mans sofa somehow. At least first few generations were cool but not anymore. I agree that Mercedes is too obsessed with AMG but bringing the SL to the AMG was the right decision and they should have done that decades ago.
Very disappointed in this new SL....Was hoping they would go simpler, no screens, minimal crap on the dash, basic cloth top and available with a 6 cylinder 300hp without the AMG boy racer adds.
AGAIN.Thomas really is reliable for reviews. I'm glad I came here i'm glad I'm subscribed! Great content man Keep up the good work! My eye literally lit Up when I saw your face and that headliner! :X
That’s strange sound was a pre collision safety system. It’s play that noise from the audio system before you will be crash the car. It’s will be make you hear blind before actual crash and when will be happening that it’s doesn’t bother the crash sounds that match. Basically this system protect your hearing and leveling out the crash sounds and noises.
Danke Thomas für die schöne Übersicht über dieses tolle Auto. Vor allem die schonungslos ehrliche Beurteilung einiger Details. Grüße aus North Carolina
Nice car.. am I the only finding it odd the row buttons and door button panels move when you push them? I'm assuming a little give helps relieve pressure. but it comes off very cheap to see the whole panel moving with light touch.
not sure about this car "replacing the S-Class cabriolet", they are actually completely different otherwise as always one of the best reviews out there from Thomas!
Yes indeed, it is also way different than the outgoing SL that’s what I’m saying is that they are canceling basically three models and put one model instead
Thank you again Thomas for another measured review. A formidable car with IT bling intruding into the driving experience. This seems a car without a clear mission. I feel little appeal to the heart: the essence of a sports car purchase.
16:55 That’s probably the pre-collision noise from the speakers. It’s a safety feature to condition your ears for loud collision noise when the car thinks you are about to crash. My E63s AMG also did that when I was in a performance driving class and doing sharp turn then emergency brake practices.
Thank you. Very good review. The first reviewer of the new 'SL' that knows what he's talking about. It's not a replacement for the previous SL. It's a replacement for the AMG GT Roadster and the S Class Cabrio. SL customers have been completely abandoned. This is in a new price segment. No metal/composite roof. Uselss rear seats. Too aggressive, etc. If SL buyers had wanted a car with four seats and a fabric roof, they previously had plenty of choice (C, E, and S convertibles). If they had wanted a two seater with a fabric roof, they could have chosen an AMG GT Roadster. And remember, people still chose an SL 63 or 65 AMG over the AMG GT Roadster. I also agree that it's now more of a 911 competitor. I even think the rear end has 911 styling elements. Personally, I'd now be more likely to buy a 911 than this new generation 'SL'. Thee downside of the 911 is how relatively common they are. The upside is, I think the 992 generation 911 is more classy than this new 'SL'. I doubt that Mercedes has unknowingly abandoned existing SL owners, but has repositioned the model to appeal to a totally different buyer. Based on the price alone, it has abandoned those who previously bought the SL 400/450 and 500/550. Personally, I am sad to see the old SL formula die. And as far as this car being lighter weight, it is in fact significantly heavier. Is the soft-top lighter than the old hard-top?
@@autogefuehl Surprising (to me), especiially given the added real estate needing to be covered. Have you by any chance got the weight figures for the old magnesium top vs the new fabric top? The new car is even less super lightweight despite the fabric top, but it is a four-seater, so there's a significant weight addition. I would also think that a carbon roof would have been lighter weight. Then again, I think the move to a soft top has more to do with the change to four seats, rather than to lessen the weight and lower the centre of gravity. Thanks anyway. Great channel.
@@nigel.w I never owned an SL before or a Mercedes for that matter. But the SL looks really gorgeous. I love the exterior/interior design. With that said, I don't think I will be buying it, because it's not a 2 seater. I really hate that the new model has 2 + 2 seats in the car. That's a deal breaker for me. I'm wondering did Mercedes go 2 + 2 seats, due to 2 seater cars (in general) aren't selling well? At least, I've heard somewhere that 2 seater cars aren't selling well.
Nice vehicle, but it seems to cater to the American market where there were complaints about the SLs handling and looks (oddly enough). I rather prefer the previous generations that were comfortable with some sporting elements. It makes so much more sense to me. I don't understand why so many reviewers only value cars for their sporting handling, exhaust note and 0-100 km/h time when there so many other good experiences to be had with vehicles like these. Thank goodness for Autogefuhl. Also in these expensive vehicles please add functional physical buttons for certain things like for climate controls and raise/lowering cabs, it is just more practical and we are all physical beings that like to hear a satisifying click or feel the push of a button. I think this looks like a really cool car, just not the direction I like the SL to take. Anyway, thanks again for the great content from Thomas and crew!
An updated AMG GT roadster with an SL badge slapped on it, and not delivering enough that is expected from either model. Given this compromise, it's priced too high and will probably be a dud for Mercedes, especially since you can buy a used S-Class cabriolet if you want a top-down cruiser or a used AMG GTC roadster if you want a top-down bruiser.
Very detailed review. As a non-Merc person, I really love this car. Will there ever be a '65' version of future SL and indeed, future AMG cars. I miss the M275 engine.
Well it replaces the GT Roadster and S-Class Cabriolet at the same time. Clearly it isn't as sporty and also not as luxurious as the others but it's still a good (looking) derivative. Competition is now 911, BMW 8-Series and Lexus LS 500 Cabriolets. Not Bentley and Rolls-Royce anymore. The GT competitor has always been the 911 maybe even the R8/Huracan
The noise you heard at 16:35 is a white noise to close/contract your eardrums so that airbag deployment doesn't hurt them. Mercedes calls it "PRESAFE Sound".
Mercedes hat mich nie sonderlich interessiert aber das ist ein bildhübsches Auto. Man stelle sich dieses design in einem SLC vor. Ein bezahlbarer Traumwagen.
At 16:58 the sound you heard was PreSafe Sound. It plays a pink noise through the system to activate the reflex of the stapedeus muscle in the ear. In the event of a crash (which is loud and can cause temporary ringing in the ears after the crash and therefore disorientation), this protects your ear from the loud bang. It is an extension of PreSafe.
16:40, that is mercedes playing the white noise through the speakers as it thought you was going to crash the vehicle, its to prevent ears popping when in a car crash as its very loud
911 is not going to be killed - it is a legend (and I am not fan of it). But this is really really great car. It has lost some of SL character (comfy grand touring specially) but that will probably save the SL sub-brand. Times are changing. Great review.
I agree I’m a big 911 fan and my dad had one growing up but this looks like it is just way more luxurious and a better car to drive daily in real life.
I have a 1985, 380SL and love. Thomas, you made me nervous with this video because I see raindrops all over the car, and you keep playing with the roof. Don't you ever do that with my car? lol btw, it is very helpful that you mention the date of filming. Saying "at the moment of making this video" doesn't mean anything to viewers. We might watch this video 5 minutes later or 5 years later.
I really like Mercedes Benz, why? because in addition to a luxury car, elegant, fast, also a sophisticated car because of technology😍 greetings from Indonesia! Thank you for reviewing the car I like
As a former SL Klass owner (R129-R230) i really don't understand the need to make it chasing a Porsche 911 even in the design. SL Klass should be the Mercedes flagship of elegance and confort. But despite this it looks nice, definitely better than the previous model (the ugliest SL ever)....good review as usual
@@herbst963 it's a feature on all models it's part of pre safe it does it to protect your ears. It triggers your ears to do something that protects you from hearing loss in an accident
thanks for good review. btw it is somewhat funny to see that a German guy review German MB with Michigan playe in California. You could test it in autobahn! lol
That radio scratching noise at 16:39 also happen to me in my 2019 s560 when i lost a little but of traction when i had wet tires im not sure what that is.
I think it’s great for mbenz launch this vehicle, bcs personally GT roadster looks so brutally, but for this looks more elegantly even from s class cabriolet. Great review Thomas!
Thomas and crew, Still loving your channel and reviews!! You make me LOL on this one with all your heavy winter cloths and it is 55 F out. 🤣🤣🤣 This is transitional weather perfecto for zee airscarf my friend. not a fan of the funny sound on that max launch portion. very nice car but not for me, my '98 sl600 is more than perfect for task at hand and not such a complex computer with wheels. Sorry your stay in California was not so much sunny days😿😿special shout out for schmoozie, should be in every review when you show phone interconnect bit, plz...
Brave to reposition this as a 911 competitor, but it is appealing design wise. But some things are getting ridicilous... its much more effort to go into a menu, then use a slider to adjust the display tilt, instead of just using your hands to regulate the angle by moving the display. Now you have an additional electric motor and need more time... so unsurprising this weighs 2 tons

Given this compromise, it's priced too high and will probably be a dud for Mercedes, especially since you can buy a used S-Class cabriolet if you want a top-down cruiser or a used AMG GTC roadster if you want a top-down bruiser.
Excellent review Thomas as ever.
🙏🙏
Very detailed review. As a non-Merc person, I really love this car. Will there ever be a '65' version of future SL and indeed, future AMG cars. I miss the M275 engine.
AMG confirmed that there will be a plug in hybrid 63 E Performance variant. It should have similar output to the GT63 S E Performance..so around 800hp
No 65 anything anymore.
Just Maybachs
My 1992 Honda Prelude had the 4 wheel steering/wheel turning, surprised it took this long to be in other vehicles
Honestly, I'm very surprised the SL hasn't been discontinued.
Yep!
the 2015 series is probably the best SL ever designed.
the 2003 is iconic yet a maintenance nightmare.
Finally… Mercedes produces a successor to the BMW Z8.
its darn cold, man, and that lowered top makes me feel even colder
I think there is typo in title. It says Mercedes-AG SL 63 instead of Mercedes-AMG SL 63.
Thanks! =) Well since Mercedes is now an own entity, really called Mercedes AG, it was technically correct - but of course it was intended as AMG ;-)
That AMG sound!
Fantastic documentary, I have a pristine 2003 low mile SL500, and wouldn’t give it up for anything, but it might need a big sister
Mercedes hat mich nie sonderlich interessiert aber das ist ein bildhübsches Auto. Man stelle sich dieses design in einem SLC vor. Ein bezahlbarer Traumwagen.
That is now the OFFICIAL name for capacitive B.S.buttons
Good explanation of how this model fits into the range .
This is Bruce Wayne's daily!!! Damn, amazing!!! 🤣✌🏾❤✊🏾
Yep!
Well done Thomas - A very good review...It's definitely not an "SL" though is it.
Thanks Paul!
16:40, that is mercedes playing the white noise through the speakers as it thought you was going to crash the vehicle, its to prevent ears popping when in a car crash as its very loud
It’s sl55 amg and sl 63 not 53 and 63 but overall very good video. Super informative.
Yes, thanks!
911 is not going to be killed - it is a legend (and I am not fan of it). But this is really really great car. It has lost some of SL character (comfy grand touring specially) but that will probably save the SL sub-brand. Times are changing. Great review.
Thanks David!
I agree I’m a big 911 fan and my dad had one growing up but this looks like it is just way more luxurious and a better car to drive daily in real life.
I live in Canada and want one of these. However, I hate the rear bumper bumps near the license plate. How can I get a European spec bumper?
I had a Q7,2018 with rear steering, then traded for a cayenne, realized I could drive 20% faster around turns(exit ramps) in the Q7
Great review, thanks!
thanks! Please recommend our channel =)
🤗
I really like Mercedes Benz, why? because in addition to a luxury car, elegant, fast, also a sophisticated car because of technology😍 greetings from Indonesia! Thank you for reviewing the car I like
Enjoy 😊
As a former SL Klass owner (R129-R230) i really don't understand the need to make it chasing a Porsche 911 even in the design. SL Klass should be the Mercedes flagship of elegance and confort. But despite this it looks nice, definitely better than the previous model (the ugliest SL ever)....good review as usual
Cheers!
it looks so good, really good proportions
Totally agree with your conclusions.
Nice review
The noise was pink noise or that sound they play when they think your getting into an accident
Is that a Mercedes feature or something standard in the US? I've never heard of it in Europe
@@herbst963 it's a feature on all models it's part of pre safe it does it to protect your ears. It triggers your ears to do something that protects you from hearing loss in an accident
SL has always had the wealthy grandad car image and that’s been it’s biggest challenge to make any inroads into the cool crowd if the likes of 911.
Beautiful, smooth lines! Bravo, Mercedes.
The interior is a vast improvement over the previous model, but I think that the exterior is somehow not as elegant.
i actually think the reverse of what you said
So sad that the 65 models are dead ,also I'll take this over the AMG GT !
thanks for good review.
btw it is somewhat funny to see that a German guy review German MB with Michigan playe in California. You could test it in autobahn! lol
Thanks 😊
That radio scratching noise at 16:39 also happen to me in my 2019 s560 when i lost a little but of traction when i had wet tires im not sure what that is.
It is belonging to the pre-safe system which is trimming your ears to expect a crash bang
Solid review, 👍🏼
you drive on PCH (pacific coast high way ) rirection from HB to Newport beach
thx u for the video, great job 🍻
🙏
that looks incredibly wicked...
I think it’s great for mbenz launch this vehicle, bcs personally GT roadster looks so brutally, but for this looks more elegantly even from s class cabriolet. Great review Thomas!
Thanks m8
Will all the versions be only in fabric the ceilings?
if Thomas is in the Us, When you will review the Rivian trucks?
Really love to. I ll ask again
Lovely job Sir
✌️😎
Thomas and crew, Still loving your channel and reviews!! You make me LOL on this one with all your heavy winter cloths and it is 55 F out. 🤣🤣🤣 This is transitional weather perfecto for zee airscarf my friend. not a fan of the funny sound on that max launch portion. very nice car but not for me, my '98 sl600 is more than perfect for task at hand and not such a complex computer with wheels. Sorry your stay in California was not so much sunny days😿😿special shout out for schmoozie, should be in every review when you show phone interconnect bit, plz...
😁✌️
Thomas this is not a 911. 😂 the 911 is a legend
Nicest looking cabriolet now and very sleek for sure, but the 911 brand is untouchable. The cabriolet variant alone sells equal numbers in AMG sedans.
Great review...have to ask...will it be the last off the mighty V8 ??🥵😇
16:40 the sound was to make your ears ready for an impact
hope you were able to enjoy driving the Malibu canyon roads on a sunnier day Thomas!
Not this time sadly - gotta come back!
The buttons on the center console are meant to bend that way when pressing them? That looked so cheap!
So, you're saying SL now become more sporty, like the 300SL ancestor?
Aye
carbon brakes are optional on the sl63??? i dont think so. Also you can operate the convertable with the key fob!
Depends on the market
I think that R107 1986-1989, is a real SL!
one of my regrets that i sold mine,i allways slap my face everytime i see one on the road:)
