Police Quest 1 was one of the first games I played as a kid. The 8-bit theme song and game music was haunting to me. It was the most surreal and mysterious experience of games for me. Also Black Cauldron was just as incredible.
There almost certainly will be, but likely not for a bit. Crapshoot is just me (Richard) messing around, so it takes both a suitable game and a decent amount of free time along with my copy of Creative Suite :-) Check out the American Laser Games episode if you haven't already though - lots of really fun, goofy FMV to enjoy in that one...
That scene where you beat down the biker in the bar was soooo much harder as a kid with the text interface. Typing out "remove pr-24 nightstick" or whatever was damned hard for my little fingers in time.
Until you learned that all you needed to type was "use stick". And then you learned you could just hit F10. But only there. Other places, you blow your leg off with your gun.
Great video from many a year ago! I had the fondest memories of PQIII, so it's interesting to hear that it's considered the worst. However, in retrospect, I'd have to agree. Half hour well spent!
this series kinda shows why most cop/ detective games don't try to be realistic . if anything having a real cop design the game and stick so closely to the book hurt the game alot more then had it just been a normal adventure game about a cop. sierra's deaths could be silly at times but atlest they tried to be charming. this was just an extreme.
I think the PQ games would be much better if instead of dying every time you missed some non fatal procedure, you would just get less points for completing the assignment. Kind of like what Interplay did with Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rites games.
Nope, you can absolutely shoot first in PQ2. As long as you hit Baines, all's good. The game apparently can't distinguish between firing first, or returning fire. Or, the only living witnesses are victims. Shot in the dark (har har), that might play into the official disposition somewhat. "Huh? Oh. Oh yes. He fired first. Yep. Right, Sweet Cheeks?" "Oh yeah, he totally fired first. My Precious did what he had to to... to... /sniff/ protect me!" "Uh-huh. Right. Well... guess that cut a few years off his life sentence. Ha!"
The PQ1 remake was vastly superior to the original, if for no other reason than you could skip the crappy poker game. Also: Blue Force! I remember really liking that game.
my mother taught a gifted class in school and had an Apple IIe for use in her gifted class she and my brother and I liked to play a game called "Snooper Troops" Police Quest games are a more sophisticated version of that old mid 1980's game and with dialogue but the clue gathering and car driving is similar. accept in Snooper Troops your brake system is in dire need of repair lol. Unlike Snooper Troops it plays out as a drama rather than just a routine clue gathering doing your job type game, there is love and other idiosyncrasies not a part of the job. SWAT is just a police sim and unlike Snooper Troops it has better graphics but is boring as Hell. Personally I'll stick to Hero's Quest(Quest for Glory copywrite name) and King's Quest I wanted to buy this on GOG but am reluctant it is 10 bux but that 10 bucks can be used for other games.
The idea of a police officer not having a gun to me is just crazy, its like a soldier not having a gun, it seems like you are really relying on the hope that a criminal won't have a gun and isn't gonna try and resist arrest.

As someone who loves these games, warts and all, this video brings me great joy. Thank you, Richard
In America, "borderline sociopath" is basically a requirement for police work these days....

This was really really great, nice production. And the commentary was superb. Keep up the good work PC Gamer.
You have to truly appreciate these games to mock them effectively. Absolutely hilarious
When I first saw Police Quest Swat at my friends house, I thought that was a peak of what computers can offer. I was easily impressed as a kid.
I remember getting the big box version on my Amiga, I too thought it was the pinicle of gaming.... at the time!
Oh boy I use to LOVE Police Quest as a kid!
Wish we had a new Police Quest game with modern graphics hehe.

Thanks!
More sierra documentaries!!
These games actually look really fun.
"Oh God the driving!" [Groans.]

I have never heard of this game but this looks awesome
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Really enjoyed this retrospect, hope there's more to come =)

What a great video series! How did it take me 7 years to stumble upon it?!
So if you check your car it's fine, but if you don't it breaks down? Is this Schrodinger's Car?
You do get a partner in PQ1 later in the game when you become a detective
This is brilliant, I would love to see more like it.
Very funny, thankyou for a great journey down memory lane. Any plans to do a Space Quest Crapshoot?
Unlikely, partly because getting that much footage would take forever, but mostly because it's tough to be funny about comedies.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done. I loved it.
they must make a remake of this game .

a-abab-Abacab!
I remember having a similar problem. Did you ever purposly walk in front of the dude playing darts just to watch Sonny die in an amusing manner? lol.
15:42 Hah! Larry Laffer! Love the built-in Leisure Suit Larry reference! But, then again, it is an Al Lowe game :b
TO KICKSTARTER!
I would play Lytton Fire Brigade Quest if Al Lowe made it!
The SWAT 4 joke made me laugh.
wow
Loving it.
Lol I couldn't stop laughing at this :P Gj PCGamer

Where you playing the GOTY edition?
Easily the classiest Spoiler Alert I've ever heard, Richard. Great vid!
