I was just informed that Sinatar (whose clip I briefly used when discussing NOB) passed away in late 2021. I wasn't previously familiar with his work, but like Pete Dorr, his streams ALWAYS came up while I was doing research for this video, and I always took a 10 minute break to watch him play. He seemed like a real likable guy and I admire his dedication in grinding through these arcane 3DO games. I just wanted to give my condolences to his family, friends & fans if any of them happen across this video. May he rest in peace.
Oh shit, I watch his Wizardry stuff on yt all the time and I had no idea. Sinatar's streams were super chill, he was a nice guy on stream despite not having the largest following.
One of the guys who invented Doppler radar systems that weathermen use had a kid that went to my school. He lived in a house that was like a castle and was the only time my friends and I got to try the 3D0 and Jaguar haha
My boy had a Panasonic 3DO his mom's was a crackhead. We played it all summer '94. Quarantine, Dragons Lair, Hell, Twisted the Game Show, Super Street Fighter 2, Crash and Burn, and Way of the Warrior was some of the games I remember playing on the 3DO
For AD&D Slayer, the reason why you can just choose whatever stats you want is so that players can import the characters of themselves or friends from either tabletop AD&D or one of the other AD&D-based video games. ...Alternatively, you can use it as sort of difficulty setting.
I presumed it was because the instructions basically walked you through character creation, like, "get 3D6 & roll them; that's your Strength stat. Enter that number in the field. Do the same for the rest of the stats."
@@evaristocabrito2517 afaik it started with pool of radiance. anyway, as there's no actual other person, you could just keep rerolling, resetting the game and rerolling or whatever anyway, so it kinda saves time. but here's a thing, some games kind of just assumed you'd have full stats on top of top gear to fight 20 umber hulks at a time 20 times in a row while mapping out, I wouldn't recommend anyone play the goldbox games without full statting everything - also as the computer is the gm and the program is fixed, it doesn't adjust anything to player characters ability - and the players have savegames to work with anyway and the difficulty and all is adjusted to that. the goldbox games also let you import your character from game to game as files too. and iirc start over with the same characters(edit: retaining the character levels). but man ffs the fights in the mine in secret of silver blades.. a game that basically straight up starts up with fighting a dragon and just ramps up from there.
While I hadn’t heard of any of these games before, as someone who watches Mandalore, I pegged immediately that it was from the Ring people. Like, every time I saw the video thumbnail before actually watching this, I was like “…was there a port of Ring for 3DO? Maybe just Ring 2?” Let’s be honest, though: the 3DO is better off for getting Dragon Lore over Ring. Ring is a cursed duology of games that almost should not be.
An hour and 40 minutes detailing obscure, largely forgotten early 3D games on a console I have yet to see with my own eyes? Another Majuular masterpiece. Huge fan of these videos. I am sure these videos take tons of time to compile so thank you.
The fact that theres not only RPGs on this system, but japanese exclusive titles made me double take. What an absolutely strange time the early 90s were.
@@discountfeces The Cd player and DAC on the 3DO is really damn good. I could see that being attractive when it was likely a cheaper price than other players, while also being in a country that loved hifi.
@@discountfecesprobably has a lot to do with the fact that PC gaming kind of fell off in Japan. The lower licensing costs in comparison to Nintendo, Sega and Sony probably made it very attractive to smaller studios who would previously have been focused on developing games for the the MSX and Sharp PCs that fell by the wayside after Windows was pre-installed on most new PCs in the 90s. It was also intended to be able to play video CDs, though I don't think that the add-on ever came out, so it was proposed as a really good CD player, home video player and games console all in one package (which was a big deal when Japanese homes are so small and space is at a premium).
The 3DO is looked at as a sort of joke these days but let's be real, we all wanted one back then. I know I did, but it was unobtainium. That 3DO version of Road Rash was the coolest thing ever and it's still a great game
@@PlasticCogLiquid my dad owned sportbikes and loved Road Rash, I remember him being at the very end of the last race on the best bike when an opponent biker literally fell out of the fucking sky and one shotted him with the chain which lead to him rage quitting. There was a period when I was a kid where we arranged "road rash" bicycle races for like 2 days, highlights were one kid getting a broom handle in his front spokes and another trying to ram a roadblock of bicycles (the last person in each race was knocked out of the race but could run interference) and getting hurt goddamn kids are insane lmao
3DO Doom's music also rocked pretty hard (the only good thing in that whole mess, apart from the major tour de force it took for one woman to reverse engineer and port the entire thing in ten weeks and get it to not display at 5fps.)
Guardian's war's epic music fits the game in the same it would fit in an elevator or mc donalds, it does not, it belongs to another higher level of existence. The whole price tag justifies only the soundtrack
@@tartrazine5 wow sweetie. There's a lot to unpack there. Maybe cool it with the wrongthink and let people cut off whatever they want and call themselves whatever they want to??? Sheesh.
Just from the clips in the video, your take on Blue Forest Story is basically correct, but bringing the offerings to the shrine isn't a coming of age thing, and the girl (Suzuna) is his little sister. I'll translate the bits that the translation app mangled, with some notes: Temuzen: "Hmph, so you're finally awake. Seriously, when it comes to you... you should be a little more like Suzuna." Varuerusu: "Yes..." - - (A Latin alphabet spelling of his name could be anything from Varuerus to Varuels to Varwells to Val-Eluth) Temuzen: "Good enough. There is something I need you to do." "Go to the shrine and deliver offerings for the Forest God" - - (The "and ride" probably comes from the auxiliary verb "kuru" that really means "and come back", or literally just "come") "I'm just saying this to make sure: Do not eat the offerings." - - (Literally it would be "steal and eat" or "steal-eat", which is a bit like "sneak a bite") "(Helps) Bad" -> (Explanation) 1/1 - - (At the shop you can buy, sell, or ask for an explanation about the items) "Fang extraction" -> Defanging (i.e. weakening) powder "Easy" -> Simple/crude/convenient/single-use tent To wrap up the "go to the shrine" arc: The priest tells you that someone stole ornaments from the statue of the goddess.
I came across a review of Blue Forest Story that refers to the male protagonist as Valerus, so that answers that question. I think I prefer your estimations, though. Varuels is clunky but charming.
Personally I’m fascinated by that weird period before the ps1/Saturn with consoles like 3do, jaguar, Amiga cd and Phillips cdi. Hope to see more in that weird area.
I doubt Immercenary itself inspired Cruelty Squad's look, due to how obscure it is, but it's definitely in that same category of "3D 90s game made by people who's eyes don't work"
You could argue that CS itself is fairly obscure, so I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility... that being said, I think you're right and its aesthetic just fired off the same neurons in my monkey brain as the vomitcore aesthetic of cs (and I mean that in the most positive way possible, for both)
@@filip7133I would say that CS definitely pulls from stuff like Immercenary and NOB (and some similarly strange PS1 games. I don't know if they looked at these games specifically, but in terms of actually released commercial products these experimental and fairly inscrutable titles, the 3DO and PS1 are a very good source for inspiration), but also I would imagine that there's a bit of a callback to the experience of downloading custom multiplayer maps and conversion mods for games like quake, unreal and half life and discovering something made by a complete novice that was made mostly to mess around with the toolset with a bunch of custom textures that don't fit and a bunch of odd bits of level design that present interesting ideas in a very unpolished way and feel a bit disconnected from the core concept of the game.
I've been on a bit of a "long-form video essay" kick lately and my buddy linked me this video this morning. Well done sir! Got yourself a new sub. Looking forward to checking out your Ultima retrospectives. Also, I'm more certain than ever now that 3DO dev kits came with acid tabs in the box.
Theory for AD&D Slayer: the ability to customize your stats with impunity might be the developers accounting for D&D players with preexisting tabletop characters who might want to self insert, it would make sense to allow you to make yourself as strong or weak as want.
This was a fascinating video! I've always referred to the 3DO as the "Panasonic 3DO", but I had no idea that there were two other 3DO systems with completely different designs by completely different companies. And I knew even less about the games.
Robinson's Requiem sounds like someone who had a vision of BoTW but only had a 3DO to outlet it with lol. The emergent connections between items remind me of it
Majuur, I just wanted to say that out of all the years I’ve had been youtube, you may have the best debut year I’ve ever seen. Keep this up, and you may break into my upper echelon of game reviewers! Cheers to a great career on the platform!
of all the years I’ve had been youtube as well I think it's pretty good kkep up good work I luv PS: I do feel like you have the potential to become one of my fav "obscure vidya game deep dive" channels alongside wierdos like Thor High Heels (check him out if you don't know him already) as much as I like retro gaming, I would NEVER in a million years have the patience to sit through obscure games like these so I thank you for letting me experience them with your videos
@@sparklesparklesparkle6318 I never subscribed so quickly after hearing him joke about the “skeleton loner, with a body of bones and an arm for a boner.” 😂
The photorealistic character portraits in Dragon' Lore actually look pretty cool. The way the photos are mapped to the faces and animated is clever and well done for it's time. Really makes it's standout from other games.
That video gave me a cool game design idea. The "destruction" mechanic made me realize on how I could implement "pick a door open" mechanic into a JRPG style game. Instead of requiring player to level up some kind of lockpicking skill (where usually jrpgs don't have levelling up abilities), instead I could give these as a property to weapons, or even equippable items. It is not unreasonable that e.g. a thieve's dagger could be used for opening a door, for example.
Dude when I was a kid my uncle in New York apparently had gotten a 3d0 and a bunch of games like alone in the dark, soccer kid, etc, and it apparently "fell off a truck lol" anyways after he had fun with it he sent it to my mom and us for Christmas and this video is fucking whiplash for me. I had the fz10 model and it was such a badass machine with wierd controllers that daisy chain. Good memories
The Dio joining black Sabbath reference on Dragon lore allowed me to give this video a 10/10 Great stuff. 3DO is truly an interesting console that deserves more attention.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear about Robinson's Requiem, that game mystified me as a child but kept me coming back no matter how many times I died of heatstroke, got eaten by wildlife, or "accidentally" performed anaesthesia-free self-surgery out of morbid curiosity. Two stumps up, would fail to survive again.
Great video man. Thanks for making it. The 3DO is one of those strange and fascinating mystery black holes to me. Sometimes I miss this era of games, where surreal and bizarre games were common. I enjoy modern controls, and design, and QoL features, and whatnot, of course. But there is a level of common weirdness that I miss.
This is the first video I've ever seen from you, and you standing in the shower fully clothed sipping a beer trying to come up with a video idea was an instant sub. Kudos!
This is my first video of yours I've seen and I have to say I absolutely loved it. I love the obscure and forgotten and this was a lovely look into the 3DO's already obscure library.
Almost 30k subscribers, wow man. I'm glad more and more people are recognizing the sheer quality of content that can be found here. I'm gonna slack during work to watch this today.
1:01:00 Wow, Guardian War goes hard! That's some excellent music. It makes me think that Yasufumi Fukuda was like "Well this game is going to bomb, but it'll make for a great resume!"
You've actually refined your comedic timing to near perfection, the Seal of the Pharoah section completely killed me. I feel like you are gonna gain popularity at blazing speed.
N.O.B was an absolute trip to sleep-deprivation stagger through. If the parts of my brain responsible for understanding Japanese actually reactivate within my lifetime, I'm going to go back to it. I also used to be absolutely obsessed with Robinson's Requiem (on PC/DOS port, obviously) back in the day, because I read the Crusoe book way too many times, and this also had sci-fi and horrible drawbacks and deaths added into the mix. You can lose your limbs and still keep going, within limits. Now that the market is oversaturated with survival games, remembering this feels kinda silly, but back then Requiem was big woah among DOS pundits.
@Gray Fox Tbh, I wouldn't really try to play a machine translated JRPG or a sound novella, those are story focused games, and when the main experience on the menu is a word salad, the whole meal gets staler than it's probably is. As for N.O.B, translation glasses can't do much against a game that gives you the majority of info via a disembodied voice that has absolutely zero subtitles. I guess the best shot would be transcribing by ear and going from there. It also just drops your ass into the game without any tutorials, which means that it's probably following the "read the manual first" design. Too bad that there's no manual anywhere, or even a scrap of info on the Japanese interweb about the thing, besides "it exists", and a few expired auctions.
@@shards-of-glass-manI tried to see if I could find anything, and weirdly enough there seems to be a copy in the National Diet Library that is currently unavailable (probably because it needs to be fetched from the stacks). So I guess if someone ever went to Tokyo they could request it at the NDL and quietly photocopy the manual, but until then...
@@stevenpina1983 relying on machine translation to beat a game guarantees you won't understand what is happening, and almost guarantees that something you could've understood otherwise will be buried by the mystery of a mis-translation. The fact NOB's menus are in English but make it more confusing is a testament to that. Japanese is one of the worst languages to machine-translate.
something tells me even if you suddenly gained native proficiency in Japanese that it wouldn't make N.O.B make any more sense at all. the language feels like it runs on some completely different engine. The longer I study it I feel my English getting worse. Kurokishi-no-kamen gets some legs if you have pretty basic Japanese though!
This video drove us feral, evidently, because we worked with quite a few people to try to rip as much of the Dragon Tycoon Edge OST from the game's data... Never let us try to rip 3DO assets again, it's very hard! Thank you again so much for this video.
Excellent topic! I remember my cousin got a 3do and thinking it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Then someone in the neighborhood got a Saturn and I don't have many memories of his 3do after that
Oh man I had a feeling this is what you were working on and I'm so happy to see I was correct. Immediately saved and I'm going to be tucking into this tonight! Will reply with my thoughts once I've watched it! Congrats on another super interesting video!
New Majuular video dropped neurons activated. Also I thought 3DO was just a 3DS typo somehow. Had no clue this existed, but that's the case for most of what you cover and why I love this channel.
I feel the 90s and early 2000s has a wealth of interesting, experimental technologies and game design ideas that we can learn from while the AAA industry stagnates. Beautiful video, sir.
@themachineeatsitself ----Oh yeah, definitely. I primarily play Indie games now. I have been on a dungeon crawler kick, grid-based design and some of these older techs deployed in a more user friendly way is an absolute blast.
Oh SHIT I mean I haven't watched the video yet, but this might finally be my chance, there's some old-ass 3DO RPG that's been stuck in the back of my memory for over 20 years that I've never been able to find. Hopefully it's in here somewhere.
Watching through the video, it was Guardian War. Thanks Majuular, you've settled one of those age old mind worms I was never able to solve all this time.
I remember seeing both the 3DO and Atari Jaguar before they came out at a computer show in southwest Ohio called ComputerFest. In that context, they seemed like pretty great consoles.
With how many dungeon crawlers there are in this video, I suddenly really want to hear Majuular talk about the FromSoft dungeon crawlers like the Kings Field series and Eternal Ring. Though after this video I wouldn't blame him for wanting a break from that type of game for a while.
@@scumhead0 King's Field 5? There's no such thing. D'ya mean 4? Also, hard disagree on them being FS's best work. 4 is the best of the KF series but it's still far from great. It's so slow and plodding. Haven't played Shadow Tower. Might give it a try some time.
Majuular, you're doing service to digital art. You're preserving things that few people have ever experienced. This is important work and for it, you've earned my subscription.
What a cool collection of games. For me, it's definitely the historical interest that kept me here. I'd never even heard of the 3DO before. Amazing video!
Would love to see you do a video about the indie titles created by people on the special PS1 known as the Net Yaroze. I was introduced to some pretty impressive examples on the PlayStation underground's volume 2 issue 2 disc 1 (specifically a 60 fps racing game and a paper plane simulator), and there were some other stand outs as well. One was an rpg, and one became a real PS1 game (devil dice). Hope you and yours have a safe, happy, and healthy 2023.
I saw the Net Yaroze as a kid and I thought it was fake. I thought it was some sales trick, some fanciful promise that was secretly stealing my allowance from me. Man.
You're genuinely funny, good at editing and formulating the structure of an informational UA-cam video, and your pacing is great. I would like to hear a few more jokes if you feel comfortable adding them in but maybe you don't believe its warranted. Great job man. You have one more subscriber!
I had a similar experience when looking through every single NSTC-J game released on PS1. Every time I thought I'd found the wackiest, craziest, most interestingly innovative games I would stumble on something else totally insane. Thats how I found stuff like Dragon Seeds, Racing Lagoon, iS Internal Section, Treasures of the Deep, PuLiRuLa, Philosama and Vanark
Have you played the one that is, as I recall, supposed to be a representation of a nightmare and is truly surreal. I just watched a video about it about a decade ago.
@@47ejecting2 LSD may as well be the poster child for obscure PS1 games. It's easily one of the most talked about. Meanwhile I remember playing Palette and still have never seen a single video on it, outside of longplays.
What a trip. I appreciate the Janus-faced approach to reviews, plus your sacrifices...so many boring grids you grinded out just to give us the best 5mins of a pyramid level etc. Thanks.
Hey man found you fairly recently but youve become a nice comfort food for me. Your vids have a very comfy vibe, and I appreciate the space to exist in. Keep up the good shit man
I didn't know 3DO made a console until like 15 years after the fact, but I did know about 3DO. They developed/published a bunch of games as a third-party.
I bought my brother a copy of Dragon Lore as a gag gift a couple of years back and we played through it together, sitting side by side like when we were kids. What a special game. Not a great game, objectively, but so, so full of that special 90's flavor of comic weirdness. Glad to see you enjoyed it as much as we did.
I just wanted to say thank you for using some Mischief Makers music during the intro. It is one of my, if not absolute, favorite games on the N64. It doesn't get nearly the love it deserves.
5th generation gaming weirdness is my lifeblood and i can’t put into words the things this video did for me. thank you for introducing me to this world of charming/borderline terrifying 3DO games 🙏
Majuular, you are my favorite creator I have stumbled on recently. I love your essays and calm delivery. Your choice of topics and how you choose to word things is fantastic. Looking forward to any new releases.
As a fan and still current owner of a 3do I gotta say I really appreciated this video. Seeing games I never had a chance to play was quite interesting. The 3do is so unique because the games are unique. For better or worse, some of my best gaming memories.
I always had that impression, this video just confirmed it. Console is similar to the CD-I in some ways, but the actual game library is a grab bag of the most fascinating stuff out there. Is it good? Not often. Is it weird and worthy of discussion and preservation, and at least one play session? Absolutely.
I was going to complain about you leaving out Vitual Hydlide.. only to realize that it was on Saturn. So visually similar to many of the 3DOs 3D games... I played Slayer for quite a while until I got bored. Never knew it had a more appealing sequel. Thanks for this - and the lot of other games that I missed. Not a reason for me to revisit the 3DO but interesting and thoroughly researched never the less. As someone who was into video games in the 90s I second the reviewers high scores for the graphics. See that on a small crt and have a game on one of the 16 bit machines (which were widespread even into the mid 90s) next to it and you know why. These screenshots on the boxes blew us away ;-)
This was truly the most bizzare fever dream I have ever experienced. I started out thinking, there is no way I can watch a 1.5h video on the history of RPGs on a dead console. The first few games were so bad in a charming way that I stuck around. When we got to titles 4-7, I thought we're heading in the direction of exploring some legitimately good games on an underrated system. What followed was a slow descent into madness that had me asking questions like "what even is reality?", "did this actually happen?", "is this a psyop being played on me to make me believe these games existed?", "surely this is some satanic subliminal message and I will end up murdering my long-dead dog before we get to the end of the video?". At this point, I don't know if reality exists. I have been committed to an asylum, but that will not stop me. I need to play every RPG on the 3DO to find the answers.
I always come back to this video. I love the gaming archeology that you do. It's so well edited and so engaging to go through all these games. Truly a masterpiece
I always have to give credit to you Majuular your work is awesome and I love the randomness of the topics you make videos about, it keeps you channel nice and fresh. Also FMV videos are the most cursed shit ever and I'm glad we`ve moved away from them.
Holy shit, Dragon Lore. I have had visions of this game in the back of my mind since I was a child, and I'm 35. Thank you so much for unlocking this memory
Just wanted to say that I appreciate your scriptwriting for these videos. Your thoughts on every subject matter doesn't feel forced, and you articulate yourself in a concise manner. Lot of these video essay formats can be difficult to fully comprehend due it's inherent nature to be overly-processed, but your videos don't feel that way. I also wanted to shout out your sense of humor, as it never feels too distracting. I'm never breaking out in laughter but I appreciate it nonetheless. Some people really force humor and I've never got that impression from you. I really hope you continue to find success, you deserve it!
Would love to see you tackle Cyberconnect2's (the dot hack people, who were also originally gonna make the ff7 remake) PS1 output. They made the really fun action rpg Tail Concerto, and the absolutely awesome Bomb the fuck outta everything at 60 fps action game Silent Bomber. Hope you and yours have a safe, happy, and healthy 2023.
Mister Majuular, I've never heard of you before a week ago, but your humor is on point, the subject matter is close to my heart, and I applaud your efforts.
i am an avid youtube enjoyer, as specially the obscure videogame side. i have never seen or heard of any of these games, thanks so much for the original content.!!
I'm still laughing over, "And you're alllll out of Lavitz," from a completely different video about Legend of Dragoon from months ago. Majuular deserves 10x the subs for that alone. Also, this video is great, too.
The description of Dragon Lore where you just hop directly into describing an alternate universe tale of Geezer Butler, Dio, Kerry King and Oderus from GWAR slayed me, much in the way that AD&D Slayer did not. Subscriber for life! 🎉
I can’t express how appreciative I am that you provide credentials and references to other people. It’s so easy to steal content and writing as your own, and it warms my heart to see.
I had heard about the 3DO library being mostly fmv garbo but never knew it had so many weird rpgs. Some of these are truly nutty. Great vid as always man!
Yeah a lot of people focus on that stuff because it's easy fodder for mockery, though the FMV was admittedly one of the platform's stand out features. It was a very unique library with a legitimate gems and the original games games that did end up on different platforms are generally superior on the 3DO due to the unique architecture. It's definitely got a lot of mediocrity compared to the competing platforms but I have nostalgia for it as it's a console I grew up with.
Thank you for this deep dive into a system I probably would never delve into myself. Love the Plumbers Wear Ties nods sprinkled through out, I gave a good, hearty chuckles to those. Well done!
So, I literally learned of the existence of the Intellivision and the Celecovision from AVGN, and that's important games history & preservation work. I literally never wanna play a single one of the games you've covered in this video, but I definitely want to know about the history of games, always. The comparison I frequently make is to film preservation. There are so many films, so many pieces of artistic creation that are just lost, gone, destroyed. You are doing your bit fighting back against the creeping sands of time by cataloging and presenting these games. Thank you for that, Maj.
its not about preservation for preservation sake, most stuff is trash that is forgotten because its trash but there are things are are actively being suppressed and censored. Its not so much about a movie being lost but not being able to find a version that is not digitally altered to remove microagressions or certain authors being removed form search algorithms because someone at google thinks their politics are dangerous
@@j.2512 no, trash deserves to be preserved, too. I want to see the bad ideas, the stuff that didn't work & blatantly never woulda worked, the dead ends that petered out. Also, cry more, dingus.

FYI, Kurokishi no Kamen is the 3rd game in the Ghost Hunter series. Laplace no Ma is the first, however there's two games, the PC Engine game (which was also ported to x68k/MSX/PC-88/PC-98) and the Super Famicom game and they're quite different from each other. Then followed by the 2nd game, Paracelsus no Maken which was only released on PC-98.

anyway, as there's no actual other person, you could just keep rerolling, resetting the game and rerolling or whatever anyway, so it kinda saves time. but here's a thing, some games kind of just assumed you'd have full stats on top of top gear to fight 20 umber hulks at a time 20 times in a row while mapping out, I wouldn't recommend anyone play the goldbox games without full statting everything - also as the computer is the gm and the program is fixed, it doesn't adjust anything to player characters ability - and the players have savegames to work with anyway and the difficulty and all is adjusted to that.
the goldbox games also let you import your character from game to game as files too. and iirc start over with the same characters(edit: retaining the character levels).
but man ffs the fights in the mine in secret of silver blades.. a game that basically straight up starts up with fighting a dragon and just ramps up from there.

OH MY GOD THANK YOU!!! My father used to play Dragon Lore when I was little and I've been trying to remember the name of the game for years! 😊
Cheers, nothing better than finding out the name of a long lost game from childhood!
While I hadn’t heard of any of these games before, as someone who watches Mandalore, I pegged immediately that it was from the Ring people. Like, every time I saw the video thumbnail before actually watching this, I was like “…was there a port of Ring for 3DO? Maybe just Ring 2?”
Let’s be honest, though: the 3DO is better off for getting Dragon Lore over Ring.

So you’re saying there’s a chance it was the Olympic swimmer?
You know what, @@wilwheaton1, I hadn't even considered that. Maybe he was.
The fact that theres not only RPGs on this system, but japanese exclusive titles made me double take. What an absolutely strange time the early 90s were.
the 3do was apparently most popular in japan, I forget why exactly
There was a period when I was a kid where we arranged "road rash" bicycle races for like 2 days, highlights were one kid getting a broom handle in his front spokes and another trying to ram a roadblock of bicycles (the last person in each race was knocked out of the race but could run interference) and getting hurt
goddamn kids are insane lmao
The quality of Guardian War's music genuinely shocked me. I was NOT expecting a 3DO game to rock so hard.
3DO Doom's music also rocked pretty hard (the only good thing in that whole mess, apart from the major tour de force it took for one woman to reverse engineer and port the entire thing in ten weeks and get it to not display at 5fps.)
@@neoqwerty the story is even longer than that
Guardian's war's epic music fits the game in the same it would fit in an elevator or mc donalds, it does not, it belongs to another higher level of existence. The whole price tag justifies only the soundtrack
@@neoqwerty Do you also count Caitlyn Jenner's gold medal and records as the athletic achievements of a "woman"? It's a little misleading.

Just from the clips in the video, your take on Blue Forest Story is basically correct, but bringing the offerings to the shrine isn't a coming of age thing, and the girl (Suzuna) is his little sister.
I'll translate the bits that the translation app mangled, with some notes:
Temuzen: "Hmph, so you're finally awake. Seriously, when it comes to you... you should be a little more like Suzuna."
Varuerusu: "Yes..." - - (A Latin alphabet spelling of his name could be anything from Varuerus to Varuels to Varwells to Val-Eluth)
Temuzen: "Good enough. There is something I need you to do."
"Go to the shrine and deliver offerings for the Forest God" - - (The "and ride" probably comes from the auxiliary verb "kuru" that really means "and come back", or literally just "come")
"I'm just saying this to make sure: Do not eat the offerings." - - (Literally it would be "steal and eat" or "steal-eat", which is a bit like "sneak a bite")
"(Helps) Bad" -> (Explanation) 1/1 - - (At the shop you can buy, sell, or ask for an explanation about the items)
"Fang extraction" -> Defanging (i.e. weakening) powder
"Easy" -> Simple/crude/convenient/single-use tent
To wrap up the "go to the shrine" arc: The priest tells you that someone stole ornaments from the statue of the goddess.
Makes me wonder if Immercenary was in at least some way an inspiration for Cruelty Squad's graphical design. Amazing video as usual!
I doubt Immercenary itself inspired Cruelty Squad's look, due to how obscure it is, but it's definitely in that same category of "3D 90s game made by people who's eyes don't work"
You could argue that CS itself is fairly obscure, so I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility... that being said, I think you're right and its aesthetic just fired off the same neurons in my monkey brain as the vomitcore aesthetic of cs (and I mean that in the most positive way possible, for both)
Look at those borders in N.O.B. They're very... _familiar._
Somehow I over-focused on Immercenary so hard it didn't even cross my mind, but you've got a point. I really am a flesh automaton sometimes

@Gray Fox what company? I can only find some Chinese company that seems to only do mandarin to English?

This is one of my new favorite videos of yours. I love having a spotlight shine on the weird and obscure.
This happens to me when I play some of those obscure PS2 or N64 games nobody talks about. Feels I'm threading on forbidden territory.
You guys are fucking nerds
Seal of the Pharaoh has to become a meme for this chanel. Music and that star thing.
I didn't make that half-assed chroma key only to use it once, I'll tell you that right now.
Majulaar intro it is definitely one of the bests that I've seen 😂. I wanna have as ringtone
Holy shit, Dragon Lore. I have had visions of this game in the back of my mind since I was a child, and I'm 35. Thank you so much for unlocking this memory
I had that game on PC when I was a kid. Never could finish it
that is a skin in cs go
Just wanted to say that I appreciate your scriptwriting for these videos.
This was amazing. The love and appreciation for these bizarre monstrosities shines through in every line.
I can never get tired of people making fun of the 3DO. Looking forward to watching this whole thing!
Your videos are keeping me alive, I love how long they last and that you still take time to edit. You're awesome Majuular!
As an early adopter, I'm really impressed by how this channel's grown. Good job, dude. Keep up the good work.
Early adopter lol. I like that, perfect for this style of video
Glad I found your channel! Your writing style is really evocative and expressive. I dig it.
I made it all the way through! Well done on your patience through some of these!
Cheers, thanks for watching!
1:01:24 - Thank you for pointing out Guardian War's soundtrack. I legit used to leave it on the overworld screen and just jam out to the music while doing my homework in high school. My friends and I were convinced that it was Joe Satriani ghost writing the music.
You're a brave man, Maj. Well done.
1:44 all i hear is "Shake shake" great music choice 😂 and awesome video
I vividly remember reading a lets play on the lets play archive of immercenary, and i found it so perfect and weird. let me tell ya maj, I love this video.
Fascinating! Thank you for enduring the countless hours of tedium required to convey what it was like to play these games… i will never have the patience to play them myself so this is the only way i will ever experience them. Would love to see this become a series.
Another video from the best boy. Excited to see how it is but wanted to comment as always that I love your stuff and hope you keep making content as long as it's enjoyable to you!
UA-cam recommended me to your through your Darkseed video, but I knew I had to watch more of your videos when I saw Dragon's Lore as a thumbnail.
Great videos, well done covering the 3DO craziness. I grew up with these games and it's a wonder I turned out okay. 😂
Just going to say that I stumbled across this channel yesterday completely by chance due to the RPG sphere my youtube is seemingly within and I have to say, from the couple of videos I've seen, very few VG-essay channels manage to hit the same stride as you are and despite the channel seemingly being fresh, you have a natural charm that places you on a similar wavelength to the likes of Mandalore, GManLives and Joeseph Anderson for me. I need to pick up some extra freelance work at the moment but I'll drop some money your patreon way at some point. Keep up the good work and much love brother.
I'm shocked how Imercenary did the whole roguelite rpg thing 20 years befire nost others tried it.
Also you made me look up what the hell Lawnmower man was. Damn good video!
Don't get me wrong, I love your videos, but that intro is one of the best parts. It's literally perfect and I hum it every time and the day you change it is the day your channel starts to die lol
Keep up the good work! Never would have played these and I've found tons of great games through your videos!
From the first scene of you standing in the shower fully clothed, I knew this was gonna be a good one.
This was such a cool video! Took me multiple nights to finish, but toally worth it. Your fascination with all things weird, crazy, and unexplainable really jives with me. I also love your editing and commentary! Dragon Tycoon Edge looks really unique in particular, I'm pretty tempted to give it a shot myself sometime.
