Don't miss this brand new episode of RECIPE?! The popular series by hot for food that shows every step of how a recipe develops from idea to delicious!
In this episode I made filipino-style empanadas with veggie ground round, tomatoes, onion, garlic, five-spice, chili powder, vegan oyster sauce and mashed potatoes. The dipping sauce was concocted from a leftover black garlic cashew cream sauce I had in the fridge and I freshened it up with lots of lime juice, cilantro, parsley, and chives. These were NEXT LEVEL delicious!
I found the pre-made empanada wrappers at No Frills. You could also use my pierogi dough and just roll it thicker and cut out larger circles as well!

Thank you for bringing back edited Recipe?! videos that aren't an hour long - these are my favorite
I made those and they might just have been the best thing I've ever eaten. You really are above the law
oh really! I'm so glad you liked them :D
Absolutely love these kind of videos, where you make recipes up on the spot with just leftovers that you have. That’s kind of what most people do when they don’t know what they’re going to cook, they look around in their fridge and their cabinets to find something to possibly throw together. Loving it
oooh black garlic. So good! I was obsessed with making it a few years ago but it makes your whole home smell. Where are people buying it? I never see it in stores
Mary's Test Kitchen // Vegan Cooking I have seen it at superstore in Calgary and at coop but I haven't checked recently
UK folks can get it from the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm, they are big over here
Heyyyyyy~ it’s me once again Mary :3
Oana, warm fermentation. You just take whole garlic, stick it in containers and keep them warm for a week or so.My parents used a rice cooker. I used an old crockpot with the lid cracked. I've seen people using programmable slow cookers or yogurt makers. Eventually, the garlic turns black and soft, like a gummy candy. The garlic turns sweeter and gets this fermented flavour kind of like Chinese fermented black beans but not as strong. It's nice on avocado toast.
Mary's Test Kitchen I've bought it at Trader Joe's before but haven't been able to find it my last several trips
I really love your friendship with Natalie. It’s so clear how close you two are and how much you support each other
I’m forever bitter you’re not on food network, we NEED you
You mean the Meat Network? They couldn't handle such deliciousness...
Everyone like this!!!!!! :D OMG YES WE NEED YOU!
Really! Where’s the f’n vegan cook???
but her being on youtube means people from all round the world can watch, there's less adverts and she has more creative control over the content... :D
AlicesJournal true. We love Lauren here. However! The food network could definitely use a vegan show. But they probably get money from the beef and dairy industry. They wouldn’t like that. I’m also waiting for top chef season where all the contenders are experienced vegan chefs. Lauren could go on there!
These empanadas look so delicious omg!
Love this series! It always inspires me to get creative in the kitchen and to always try coming up with a meal idea that you can easily prepare with leftovers in the fridge! SO excited for all the RECIPE?!s coming! Luv it!
I’m Filipino and this brings back memories from when I was younger. My cousins, sister, Mom, aunts, and I would have a whole day dedicated to making empanadas! I love them. We always baked half and fried half!
OMG 😍 thanks so much for this! It’ll be a perfect treat for our next camping weekend 🤟
I was watching Lauren IRL when this popped up and I couldn’t pass, immediately clicked on it, no questions asked! because LAUREN JUST MADE SOMETHING FILIPINOOOO hi queen!! 🙌🏻
hiiiiii hahah xo
Mmm looks so good!!! I honestly like the cut down version better. I dont always have an hour to watch you do recipe?! Videos but I love watching you come up with such creative stuff!!
Lol not Spanish-Mexican influence! SPANISH influence. Mexicans are not colonizers the Spanish were!! Lol just wanted to clarify
N. Carroll-Gomez .... glad I looked at the comments and someone corrected that... I was looking at the video going "No no no no no no... Mexicans did not do that... Spain did."
Mexico was still part of Spain at the time as well, so the Philippines had a trade relationship with what’s now modern day Mexico. There’s a good chance some cuisine could’ve been influenced by both Mexico and Spain then, since specifically Mexican Spanish words exist in Tagalog that don’t exist in Castilian Spanish. :)
Nicole Buenaventura ... Mexico was never a part of Spain. The Philippines and Mexico were both colonized by Spain. I'm sure there was a cross connection of foods and flavors... as the Spainsh moved from one country to the next.
TawannaPatrice They were both part of something called New Spain, so basically territories of Spain, if you wanted me to be specific haha
TawannaPatrice (sorry for broken up replies lol) but yeah the Philippines were controlled by Mexico (technically new spain, which itself was under spain, at the time) for a surprisingly good chunk of time
I feel like hot for food is expanding into a little team with Natalie and Alex! Love it!
Yes yes yes!! I love that intro music. Thank you for putting in the work for an edited Recipe?!?
I think Iike this version of recipe better!! This looks deliciousss!!
I need to see if the camera guy approves lol!!! I like when tries the food!
Eli Portillo these are awesome! Can't recommend enough :)
Definitely! Alex on the screen! Although he seemed so shy and denuded of confidence😟 in previous mukbang, so he would probably say "nah" if asked. But hey, no one can eat like an aristocrat in front of a camera and yet feel comfortable about it. Btw. most of dining accidents happen when people try to avoid them and look like civilized beings😅
your "intuitive" cooking and RECIPE?! philosophy is the reason why i also love to *take ownership* of recipes by experimenting, changing things up, and taking risks with diff ingredients. 🔬🍅👨🍳
you make cooking look like a *cool* science _without_ all the boundaries and fuss. thanks for bringing out this joy and fun in cooking in me!
Can you do vegan lumpia? I have been wanting to try that before I went vegan but haven’t been able to have it since
HeyLupe Astig Vegan has a great vegan lumpia.
YOU ARE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE! I found a vegan Filipino restaurant in SF when I moved here in December and almost cried when I saw lumpia on the menu
I made a big splurge (on Amazon...can I say that?) and bought three vegan cookbooks...count 'em!..THE EDGY VEG, VEGAN COMFORT CLASSICS (hot for food), and Sweet Potato Soul's 100 EASY VEGAN RECIPES.....phew, do I have my reading cut out!! I like to read cookbooks before trying any recipes to get the feel of the whole thing...the mood, if you will. All three of these books are feasts for the eyes (the window to the stomach?) and I'm getting some good vibes....it's an adventure...thanks for your contribution...you rock!
awesome! Thank you so much for supporting xoxo
Thank you for blessing us with 2 videos in 1 day. I need that empanada dough in my life.
Empanadas are a typical dish here in Chile, some have meat and some have cheese, so whenever my family likes to make empanadas, I do my own vegan version. They always turn out really good 😍 but I may try this recipe it looks soooo good
Xiomara Cancino what do you usually do? (-:
I love the fact that you just go with whatever ingredients you have, i love messy chefs
i can’t wait until you get your own food network show and change the game 4ever, i love u Queen
YUMMMM! Looks delish, dipping sauce looks great and I bet they would be delish with some chimichuri for an Argentinian vibe. Making the whole packet to freeze is a must for spontaneous empanada snacking!!!
veganized filipino food 😭❣️
I’m I the only one impressed on how she knows all the ingredients to everything like the oyster sauce and the pulled pork.
I love this!
yay! I love the edited version
Yesss! I really missed these types of recipie?!s
I make vegan empanadas on special occasions, but I fry them! It’s a must! They taste so much better! I also make them with cheese and vegan meat and just plain cheese! It’s delicious! 😋
Omg my mouth is watering. They look so good, as well as that dip!
Lauren said in the intro: "I'm not like other vegan UA-camrs" ;'-) hahaha
Whaaatt? Lauren my fave vegan youtuber made some Philippine style empanada!! One of my childhood favorite. Amazing! Filipino vegan here😀
What?!?! I'm here for this Lauren!!!! I'm Filipino and I'm super stoked for this. 😊
hey Lauren! You should try using reusable produce bags! Since you use so much produce making your delicious food
Natalie and Lauren are friendship goals.
YAS I'm so happy when I see vegan filipino recipes
p.s. i love how you brought your best friend in for this video and it looks like you guys have matching tattoos?? so cuteeee
Love the recipe videos and your face when you eat something amazing is priceless - and I have to make empanadas this week! great video!
I love when you deep dry things
I saw some wonton wrappers in the freezer section of my market and was thinking if it would thaw well. Now I’m convinced but I need to find empanada pastry. Thx for the inspiration
my cookbook has a homemade wonton soup recipe - if you need to use those wrappers! It's one my fave recipes in the book
natalie is awesome!!! XD
i really like this recipe?! style! so much character!
So creative! Love food that is stuck into bread or on bread! You two make me laugh!
I think I’m over my Jamie obsession. Thanks Lauren.
Omg the original hot for food music is back I'm so glad
Thank you......thank you! I was wondering what I was going to do for Fourth of July. When you pulled out the pull pork mushroom meat, I thought sliders. Because I too was going through my frig. Love your episode 👍
Super tempted to try using jackfruit/pulled pork for the first time but with empanadas. Any idea what else would go well inside with jackfruit or how to flavor the jackfruit?
@Laurentoyota OMFW!!!!! Yes... I made empanadas in College for Spanish Class when I took it back in oh 2010... ohya, ohya good going Nat Nat and Lauren.. I am making some next week.. cause I got home made pizza on the mind right now..lol. Loved this video so much. Lauren I think you got your groove back you thought you were lacking. Love you xo.
Yeah! Veganized Filipino food!!!
looks so good!! btw, i like the edited shorter versions of recipe??!! instead of the live version
“That’s it I don’t really want to talk anymore” Lauren Toyota is all of us
Lauren!!! Thank you for making this Filipino inspired dish. I’m assuming Nat is Filipino since she mentioned these empanadas (sorry if she isn’t!) but I would love if you could try to vegan some other Filipino dishes!!! I think a lot of people who eat Filipino food can agree it’s entirely meat based so it’s been really hard to be a vegan Filipino! Thank you for opening my eyes to vegan food
i grew up on an argentinian styled empanada but i’ll have to try these!! 😍😍
Nice video! You seem like a natural at cooking. Props
What a fun effort with Natalie! We used to have an empanadas restaurant in St. Louis...I miss it! (Nooo, don't keep tomatoes in the fridge 😳🍅)
Lauren! You are glowing in this video! Somehow more than usual :)
More more recipe?! Videos please!!!!! Love them
Never clicked on a video faster. Love from the PH! ♥
This is awesome! I never thought you would make anything Filipino!! ❤❤❤
Tip, fork works really well to close up the empanada. From a Puerto Rican family and that's how we make our empanadas
They look so good! 😍 I need to find some of the empanada pastry.
Lauren, I just bought my first flat (condo) and I need to stock my kitchen with cookware, what pans did you use in this video? If anyone has some suggestions of good (reasonably priced) cookware brands, please reply below. Thanks.
Tbh I prefer these better than the live versions
I like this style a lot more, I find the full length recipe?! videos to be too long to watch all the way through. Not because they're not interesting but because I'm a student with a job and I don't have a lot of free time. So getting all the content in less time is sooooo great.
Natalie has such a beautiful complexion! I love it!
i love the dynamic between you and nat
Ouff those empanadas look amazing !! I need to find the pastry to make that !! Yummy !!
I LOVE NATALIE SHES SO BEAUTIFUL OMG (she kind of reminds me of the Disney version of Pocahontas 😍)
Looks so good. actually, in Argentina, shepherds pie's stuffing is almost the same as empanadas stuffing.
what brands of pots and pans, knives do you folks use? they look very nice!
all kinds of things. Check my amazon store in the video description for some items
That looks so gooooooood!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!
Happy 4th July to all your American subscribers, i hope you all have a fab day, stay safe & have fun. 💗
OH MAN. those look GREAT!
I’m totally making these! They look delicious and by your face when you bit into them, they’re even more delicious!
Oh those look amazing I love recipe? What kind of store did you get the wrappers from?
Oh my god that looks so good
This Filipino is thanking you for this recipe!! ❤️❤️❤️
MORE COLLABS WITH NATALIE!!!!
I'd love to see more Asian-inspired recipes on your channel!
I missed this BG music!! Btw, I so much prefer the RECEPIE?! vids to be edited instead of live streamed... Maybe just me? Awesome work, like always.
Love empanadas!!!
Love the looong food videos 😍
This is a must try for me. 🤗
they look just like our fried pierogis, amazing
Lauren, I love seeing you eat, lol! Thank you for another great recipe.
These look SOOOO good omg😩😩
There was something so beautiful about 16:04...it was like....a trance of flavortown or something
Yessss recipe! I did a book review in German from your book :-) I love your book! love from germany
omg mushroom and artichoke 'pork' seems divine, great idea
Yaaaasssss they look so good i have to make them!
Looks sooo good!
Just bought empanada wrappers to try this! Yum 😋
GET IT!
when you first made it it reminded me of a Cornish pastie
I believe you are an inspiration to vegans!. I hope you can collab with Gaz Oakley one day...
Yehey! I love my mom's baked empanada. I hate raisins but I allow it in empanada. My aunt is a tvp distributor so now I can make those.
The other style of empanada in the Philippines, Ilocos empanada, is for carnevores. The pastry has lard. The fillings are green papaya, sausage meat and egg. Then you fry it.
What is tvp?
@@karam5607 Textured vegetable protein. Works great as a ground meat substitute and much cheaper than Gardein, just look up how to cook it.
Wow! Looks SO good! WTG, Lauren! :)
YUM. I'm full from dinner, but drooling at this video.
I ordered your book. I can't wait to get it:)
As a filipinp/puerto rican. Lemme tell you the best are puerto rican version. Fried (deep or pan). Onions and garlic are chopped very small and sauteed, then ground beef is cooked in the onions and garlic. After cooked, add tomato paste, salad olives, and salt and pepper to taste (or Adobo or Tony's to taste). Put a slice or pinch (if shredded) of any cheese (or.no cherse)onto the wrapper and scoop filling into it. Then fold, crimp, and fry. And wallah, delicious. (Of course this can easily be edited and made vegan.
Haha regarding the watch me eat series, for a second there I thought you said "you can watch us eat GRAPES" 😁 I was like hmm okay, nice.. 🍇💁
bahahaha imagine
hot for food I guess some folks could be into it 😂
i highly recommend bake the potatoes, no smash it, i mean cook the potatoes in water for a few minutes then take it in the oven until are fully cooked and gold, and add to the rest of the filling... this extra step make a huge diference!
