After the factory edge on a friend's kizer begleiter worn to a moderate working edge I put a taller 18 dps edge with a guided system then freehanded a convex shoulder that wasn't particularly difficult. That was a screamer tor a couple weeks until it started losing pocket time to a mini 940 in CF. But it does seem to be holding up well when it is used.
I think youre the first person I've seen comment on the grind... Thanks for the review! I've been looking at this one for awhile and considering getting one but that grind has made me rethink that a little bit haha. Congrats on your win! I wish people didn't ruin it for you. Amazing video as always.
Do you think the coating ont he blade is a factor in why it isn't as slicey? I've heard the stonewashed versions are good slicers. I own a few coated blades and they seem to be sticky and cause more friction when cutting through things. Where as my stonewashed knives seem to glide through things better. I was going to order a begleiter next week because I think it's got potential to be one of the best budget knives, I think I will prefer it to the RAT1, it looks much sexier too.
Take a look at the new (Kizer made) Tangram Santa Fe! I just got mine and my first impression is quite good. Only available on Amazon right now though...
I think the geometry behind the edge will have a major impact on edge retention. If it gets thick right behind the edge your have to push harder to get threw the material that's going to put more pressure on the apex thus dulling it quicker or making it roll or chip easier
I actually own one of these knives.I believe the biggest problem is the coating. It seems to grippy and doesn't let the blade slide through material smoothly. I really want to remove it, but I don't know how. I have been looking for info but can't find anything. Does anyone out there know how to remove titanium coating?
Supposedly it's just a painted coating , so I'd assume some sort of paint remover would probably remove I. I'd keep it oiled or force a patina afterwards because it's likely painted for a reason, but then again I don't know much about vg10, you may not need to.
I have a couple of these and experience no issues with the coating and the coating is very durable(my preference is non coated) and I use it as a hard use edc and live in the woods which is why I like the thicker edge for strength. I have chipped out others with better steel doing the same work this one has been doing for over a year now. Ones lemon is another's gem. Yes I have many that slice so much better, but then I do not use this for slicing but is used for much harder materials and works flawlessly for me thus far. And saves my premium blades from rough hard use.
Good explanation. You should dig up an old American made vintage knife made from tool steel. I have a few tl-29 knives from ww2 era that sharpen like a dream and cut like nothing on the market today. I'll never understand why the market went to be thick knives that don't cut as well.
"Probably not a good example because nobody really has the Viper Keeper" -- Too Phunny! Pete, don't you know that it's mandatory for knife reviewers to have a Rat 1 at the ready - for size comparisons?
Nice looking knife. Too bad about the slicing ability. As for the name, I know Kizer is a Chinese company, but "Begleiter" is German for "companion", which makes sense. That would be pronounced "beg-light-er," a little like "Bic lighter". Sorry if I'm being picky. Thanks for the review.
Kizer does great heat treatments on their VG10 and S35VN, but the Delica blade is a laser with a good polished edge and the RAT 1 design places the handle slightly above the blade for superior initial cutting force (not to mention it comes in D2 for as little as $33.95.) I own some nice Kizers that perform well, but in this class I much prefer The Dukes. Good review, Pete.
already done man! reeve runs his s35 a little softer IMO but reallt works a treat for sharpening. if you search ‘cedricada sebenza’ you should find my vids from when I worksharped my small seb. Which was a very scary thing to do)
Pete , was that your phone , with your own picture on the front ? Ha Haaaa ! Good video, more people need to learn more about blade geometry, so they can find a blade that fits their needs better .
I did see a vid where you did a knife test in a gorgeous backyard garden and thought that you were very fortunate to have a life where you could use your knives and put your knowledge to work, Here on the West Coast of Canada, if I want to use a knife outside it has to be LC200 or H1. That really limits what I can carry.
Best review of the Begleiter I have seen. Thanks!!

Begleiter is german and means companion.
Greetings from Germany👋

Good demonstration of edge geometry.
The head and shoulders analogy was spot on. This will most likely be my first knife from kizer, of course because this review was so good 👍🏻😂

Good call on the 'footprint' comparison to the Benchmade 940
Excellent video & info as always!
Kives don't have foots
Cool knife. Thanks for the review pete
Great review. Interesting on the cutting. I figured it would be a great slicer. Thanks for the info.
Just got the red micarta n690 version

Convex the edge abit to thin it out alittle behind the edge and knock back the shoulder
Rather this or the dukes???

Oh and I made the "slicing" abilities worse by putting a high polished convex edge and still love this knifes performance.

I say keep that knife or do with it whatever you want and ignore the crybabies who said you shouldn't have entered because you have a UA-cam channel.
How does this compare to the Ruike P801?
Please help. I am really considering buying this knife. Will it perform better if I bring the edge between 17 to 20-degree angle?

cafn8ed74 yeah I figured I would mess up the pronunciation somehow!

Would be really interesting with a cut test with the CRK Sebenza or Inkosi. Lets see how CRKs S35VN perform.

Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors Thank's will check it out! 👍
I have the green one. It's worth the $50 - $55 price. It's better than most Buck, Kershaw, Gerber, knives of similar prices.

Nice knife. Looks kinda similar to the G10 version of the Real Steel Megalodon, except it has thumbstuds instead of a flipper.
Hello Pete’s child !!!
Great review but that music at the end of the video is driving me insane. It sounds familiar but i just can't place it.
+john james its Robos theme from Chrono Trigger! SNES JRPGS for the win!
I new i had heard it before. it's been bugging me since the first time you put in in one of your vids.
At least it's got better steel than the rat 1
The Begleiter aside a Bic lighter!😋
It’s not a cutter it’s a stabber 😂
Uh, Cedric....your lawn is dead.
I no longer live there
