+Nick Shabazz I'm not an expert on knives by any stretch, but I'll give my rationale at why I don't think it saves costs. The skeletonizing is certainly done after the liners have already been formed. If one accepts that assumption, it cannot be true that constructing a shape, then cutting shavings out of said shape, then recycling those shavings, could be a cost conscience decision. I would liken that to purchasing a soda for the sake of recycling the can, even though you're allergic to caffeine. Either way, you've got the best knife reviews on the tubes, so good job there!
@@freedomvan2970 not unless theyre water jetting the liners out of a sheet of steel and in that case they just program the water jet too skeletonize the liners at that point thus not adding cost cuz it's already programmed
The metal is most likely recycled (no matter if it's drilled, cut, etc.) but the value of scrap steel/stainless is very low compared with other metals. So it's definitely not saving any money
You're so right, and it holds true for so many products. I can only surmise that some objectivity gets lost in the complicated process of design and production.
+Mitchell Delmar And I imagine somebody said "well, if we mask the blade action, it'll cost $3 more to make", and somebody else said "eh, screw it". What kills me is when these flaws are found on a $400 knife where budget is no excuse.
The Begleiter 2 has bearings. The original, which you can still find online (as of 4/21/22) has bushings. I have both models, and while the bearings make for a crazy-good action, I actually prefer the low-maintenance of the bushings. Use the knife hard, wash it off and re-lube the pivot & bushings... and you're good to go. i also prefer the slightly longer blade on the gen 1. For me it's just a tad more functional (though it's only an 1/8" or so longer, so not a huge difference).
Though I’m late to the party I had to throw in my 2 cents because this is my EDC. One of (that i know of) Teflon washers wore out on me within a few months, but it doesn’t seem to effect the action of the knife. Since i brought up the action I have to say it’s fantastic! The thing flies open and drops shut with only a small amount of effort. The titanium blade finish has remained fine for me as well. Overall it’s a snappy, affordable, and sturdy as hell EDC option, I think it’s pretty great little knife and would recommend it wholeheartedly.
Hi Nick, nice review! Kizer becomes more and more popular in Germany, so they let some german youtubers test the prototype of the " Begleiter". When they finally built the knife, the name stayed. "Begleiter" is the german word for companion. Great knife for the price and performance! Greetinx from Germany, Oli
thomassmyth65 not really. This is very close to a Spyderco tenacious. It's same materials and both are g-10 liner locks. You can read my other comment about this knife, but with the exception of a vg10 coated blade (that is as dull as a butter knife) its very similar. I've owned both and even though 8cr13mov is soft, Spyderco comes sharp as hell out of the box and has a beefier lock as well.
WatchReport.com what's wrong with vg10? It's a fantastic steel, used on higher end kitchen knives, it has great performance and the price it fantastic.
I agree, Spydercos materials are ok but the delica is a 100€ where I live, thats why I like Kizer so much, good materials an fit and finnish at a fair price. Unlike Spyderco.
Great video! I just picked mine up for $42.95 and I'm pretty happy with it. Yes, its not perfect but for the price its pretty good. I love how narrow it is for its size and how it tucks away in the pocket (and its VG-10 on a budget.) Tight and gritty pivot but after a few drops of tuf-glide it smoothes out after a handful of flicks. I give it a B+. Thank you for your continued insightful and witty commentary Mr. Shabazz.
The "paint" is a Ti coating. I recently recived one as a christmas present. Right out of the box, opended it a hand full of times and itvwas broken in. My action is smooth and never falls short of lock up. Lock up is strong and sturdy with zero blade play. I know in a production knife its not going to be the same quality each time, but if your think about getting one do it!!!
Great review, just got mine and your review is spot on! For the price though, this is one hell of a knife. Pity it isn't a little smoother to open. I've played with the pivot screw and no difference. It is getting a little easier with time, I love how this knife has minimal hotspots. Great review again, keep it up.
just ordered a blue begleiter, unpainted version. Hoping that will take away some of the "ugly." However, it is (now in July 2019) a $60 knife. *edited to include purchase date
I just got a Mini Begleiter Knife Black G-10 (2.8" Stonewash). So far, I really like this knife. And for $52, I like it more. A lot bang for the buck. I am just using this for a EDC.
Very detailed and insightful review as always, Nick. I'm also not a fan of coated blades (short of Tenifer/Melonite). I just purchased a Begleiter with blue G10 and satin blade; very excited to check it out.
How is skeletonizing the liners going to reduce materials cost when they have to mill out the full sized liners? If anything it reduces tool life. 0:56
A little emery cloth and polishing compound and you'd have a fall shutty blade. Reminds me of a very dressed up Rat1. Regardless, it's a very nice knife.
@@zironemegeaz right ..it adds a process so it seems like it adds cost .. so good on then for doing something they didn't have to .. and it's makes the knife all the better for it

I had one of these. Lost it while shopping. In the end I didn't care because of the price and because it was good, not great. The painted blade made it feel like a ceramic blade and I didn't like it. I did fine tune it though and was able to make it a free dropping blade, but preferred to carry it tighter as I like to slowly open thumbstud knives. And yes as someone else mentioned, sharpness out of the box was almost butter knife sharp (dull?). If they put a better edge on it, added some jimping and did a satin blade it would be a winner.
Could you compare this to the Boker Plus Urban Trapper? Im looking at it for light-medium use for food prep, cutting paper, cardboard and light to thick plastic, maybe some wire if absolutely necessary. Might suffer some abuse by being hit in the pocket or dropped from waist height. I'm having a hard time deciding between a couple knives, but mainly these two. I also own sandpaper. Also, subbed dude. love your videos, love your voice.
i know youre not a fan of stonewash finishes, but im gonna pick up the stonewash finish version. hopefully it dodges all the issues with the painted finish.
Richard Huntsman that's what you would think but compare both sides of the knife. If you attached the clip on the left side it would point down off the scales The funny thing is, the new version in brown and blue have to same holes haha. I still love Kizer though and it's a great knife for 50-60 bucks.
I intend on getting this knife to have as a "gentlemen's" carry or a personal steak knife.😝 my question is has anyone tried to strip the coating? I know the manufacturer claims its titanium coated but we all know sometimes it's not exactly true. Just curious if anyone out there gave it a try. I hope somebody tried. At least just the area where the washers are to make a smoother action. Great review as always.
I wonder if you would do a follow up video after trying to solve the paint issue? Maybe with some vinegar or steel wool or sandpaper like you said. I bet the action would be a lot better.
Nick Shabazz Right, I guess I forgot when you said that, my bad! Thanks for bringing my attention to the Vanguard lineup though, there are some compelling cheaper options there. Maybe you would review some more of them?
I own this knife, for all the same reasons you mentioned. The only thing I really don't like is how thick the blade is. I liked that it was a long narrow blade, but the thickness makes it not so great as a slicer. It is very, very thick above the cutting edge. I believe, it is 0.13 in thick blade, but it'd be perfect at 0.10 or even 0.09 like the delica.
I complained about this knife, but the problem was (my) user error; I had never owned a thumb stud knife before, and I was deploying the knife incorrectly. My bad.

I don't think making the handle liners skeletonized reduces material cost, they would still have to use the same length and width of bar stock and then mill out the holes, which would just result in waste material, unless they go on to use the tiny discs of steel for soemthing else, or sell it as scrap.
I have this knife in od green and love it but my one problem with it is the thumb stud is razor sharp. Anyone else have this problem? Im mostly used to it by now but if it wasn't for that it would be my favorite knife.
They do 2 versions with a stonewashed blade... Tan or Blue G2.. I just picked up a blue one and it's a great knife for the $$$. Nick: You made a comment that the skeletonized liners on this knife, in addition to saving weight, reduced cost. How do you figure? Looks like the liners are the same overall size of the G10 on both sides; but skeletonized via removal of steel. That steel would be waste in the manufacturing process. So where is the reduction in cost? My turn to be nitpick with you. :-)

Skeletonizing doesn't reduce material cost. It *does* increase production cost, though.
