Thanks, Pete; your wit, humor, and knowledge of the industry have made some really crappy days more than bearable in 2024. May you and yours have a wonderful new year.
I'm with you in that I have a lot of knives that I don't carry, but they check a certain box. Certain blade steel, handle material, dealer exclusive, etc.
All the best for the new year, Pete. Spend time with the family and don’t prioritise UA-cam over life. I’ll watch whatever you put up, whenever you upload it. All the best from WA.
I picked up a Grambeau Russ EDC in part because of Pete and have no regrets. The hollow grind is oh so slicey and there are lots of details to it being a really well thought out design.
Great stuff Pete! Thanks for sharing your collection. I too love the Stretch 2 K390. Have a Happy New Year and may you find health & happiness in 2025 mate. 💪✌
I honestly think you would have a blast making a video on the Civivi Hid. It's a ludicrous looking "pocket" knife. It's huge. But like a folding kitchen knife. I actually want one to use as a camping food prep knife.
Took me a week to get to this one. Watched the other 2 on Jan.1st. Well, I got through 3/4 of the rating bad habits video on the TV with the family watching. Long videos tend to get put off till I have more time.
3 great videos. Thanks! Always stoked to see the collection. Really need to whittle mine down quite a bit, it’s gotten kind of unfocused. Also would love to hear your favorite games and anime of the year if you feel like it!
Happy New Year Pete. While we're on the subject of Top 5's, you're squarely in my Top 5 of youtube channels. You and Advanced Knife Bro are a no brainer 1-2 punch. 3-5 I'd have to think on...
Holy crap!!! I just looked in my knife drawer. "Knife Drawer" is the first clue. 3 fixed blades and 9 folding blades. Two of the fixed and one of the slip joints were custom made by UA-camr knife makers. I guess I really am a knife collector of sorts. Who'd a thunk it. Happy New Year, Pete et al!!!🍾🥂🎆🎉🎊
Just picked up a Mike Irie custom hollow grind TRM Atom in Magnacut and this thing is insane. Keep an eye out, Pete. They’ve been doing drops like that recently. Happy New Year!!
Happy New year Pete, hope you and your family have a wonderful 2025, no Manix 2 on the table is highly disappointing, but maybe that's something you can remedy in the new year😉, have a good one brother, your the best
20:06 "Starting to see the tip outside the handle" This is why any time you need to sharpen the point on a folder you should only grind it down on the spine.
Have you seen the MBK knives in ZDP? I saw a post saying they're running lower on the ZDP inventory they have. The rosalinda (full size) might be your style
It's been a while since anything from Cold Steel interested me as well. I faded out a bit when they stopped making the higher end stuff like the Black Sable in san mai 3 or the Black Talon. Then when Thompson sold the place it started looking more generic, haven't bought any since. I have tons of their old stuff, a lot still nib from 15-20 years back, none of their new stuff looks comparable. Happy New Year to you and yours Pete.
Happy new year man. I'd be interested to hear your take on the question, with rex 121, of the working edge retetion vs the keen (hair whittling) edge retention. I'm a sandvik/nitrogen fanboy, so personally I would prefer a knife that's easier to maintain at a much finer sharpness, but I'd definitely like to hear your take on the subject!
I think that it might be a good idea to come out with some new t-shirt designs and other merch for 2025. Should help add a little disposable income and I’m sure I won’t be the only person buying some.
Civivi has gotten crazy with so many options, and I know there’s a bunch of great ones that I’ll probably never handle. I think Kizer is the same way, maybe not quite as bad.
The best Civivi models I like best are Phoenix Strike, Hyper Sonic, Teraxe, Shredder, Vision FG, and Hid. As for Kizer, their Begleiter XL and Kobold 2 are both really nice.
Another great watch - Happy New Year! My Spyderco Sage 5 is great but honestly I've just never clicked with it. I want to love it but I guess I just don't. It IS a fantastic knife though (ignoring the lack of "joy" it brings me). That's my unsolicited 2 cents. 🥴
i wish spyderco tried some slim g10 handles. i like their knives, but i only carry them when i know i'm doing a lot of cutting because they always feel so tall, wide, and thick for how much blade you get. the frn looks and feels cheap to me and although that doesn't ruin it for me, the frn picking up all sorts of garbage in its aggressive pattern does.
9:45 The Native5 is great. I have one in Maxamet. If it’s too small for you get the native Chief…I got one yesterday in SPY27. It’s the pointiest sliciest knife I have. The tip is like a needle. It’s large, maybe too large for EDC, but it’s a great platform and I can see myself getting more of them. CruWear version is available soon. 12:52 same, I have that Rex121 knife and for the past few weeks I’ve been experimenting with what grits, scratch pattern, and apex is best for it. My example is definitely harder than my two Maxamet blades. Easily noticeable on glass. The Sage 5 is like a Manix2 mini if it existed and so since the Manix2 is my most used model I like it quite a bit. It’s my first Sage 5. I also have a Manix 2 in Maxamet and MagnaCut in the post as well. 😂 I hate thumb studs…I can’t buy knives with them.
Thanks for the overview, Pete. Yes, Cold Steel has lost my interest, too. Joe-X destroying their cheapened blade steels doesn't bold well for CS. I've yet to get a TRM, but your vids over the years puts them at the head of the line for me in 2025. The Spyderco Sages in Maxamet and Rex121 were last years big adds. Happy New Year's to you and yours. Enjoy.
The advantage that the Endela K390 has over the Stretch 2 is that you can buy one. Even the Delica is thin on the ground now, especially for Australians.
I’ve recently been rotating in knives that I’ve had for ages but haven’t carried in years or never really at all. It’s also an attempt to give the knives I use and sharpen often a break, while also semi scratching the itch of wanting something new. Anyways, one I pulled out that really gives me Al Mar eagle vibes is the Benchmade Fact. I know it’s not really slicey or that thin behind the edge but there really is something cool about a long thin spear point profile with a super pointy tip. Maybe my tastes have changed or maybe it’s just that it’s so different from the usual tall flat ground Spyderco’s I love but I’m kinda disappointed in myself for writing this knife off when I got it on sale a number of years back. That said, it makes me want to dive back into some of the other older evergreen designs that I probably didn’t fully appreciate when I first got them! Long nonsensical story short, Happy New Year Pete!
Unless you got rid of a bunch, I think you have more knives. I remember "the shelf". Currently I have more folding knives than are on that table. I have slowed down....a lot ! Only 7 fixed blades though.
I replaced my Deka 2 scales with Flytanium Ti scales and it is my favorite folder of all time now. Comfy handle, classy looking, thin Magnacut stock. The original scales were *not* comfortable.
I’m getting a little Ho hum with folding pocket knives lately, I’ve gone full circle and back to fixed blades. The best pocket knife I own is a Benchmade and they’ve priced themselves out of the market, Spyderco isn’t much better.
Every person buying a knife should look at what this man is using for his knives. If a knife can survive what he puts them through then it can survive what 99% of the population will put their knives through day to day.
Pete, I've got some knives I would send your way for review, if you would have them. Been watching your channel for some time and would just like to contribute. Either way, thanks for the entertainment and sharing your outlook on knives and life. It really helps keep my head on straight sometimes.
Hey Pete, you should really try the CRKT Redemption. Long skinny blade, Magnacut and made by Hogue. my best Knife 2024. It is weird, but well made . like me I guess....brilliant Knife. Cheers from Germany
Nice video. Thanks. BTW, the only Benchmade I really like is the Bugout but only with the Veyron second market scales. The original scales are total rubbish.
Re: the deka vs bugout- it's the point of balance for me. Ive become more attuned to this the further along i get in the hobby. Deka is blade heavy, probably because it was designed with the G10 scales in mind. Feels like it wants to dive forward out of my hand just a bit. Bugout is perfectly balanced and has that nice neutral handle and better contouring/finishing, too. I also flattened out the leaf shape on my Chaparral like you did on that Sage. In my case it was because the factory grind was messed up and I had to sharpen out a spot in the heel of the edge where they came in on the belt wrong and hollowed it.
I was first thinking, see, I don't have a problem, YOU have a problem collecting too many knives... but then I realized this is your actual job. LOL. Shit. I have a problem. I hear you about Cold Steel, I've been hearing bad things about how they treat reviewers too, but I loved the FM-1 they came out with.
About H2 being good with serrations... It's likely a myth. As far as I can tell nobody has done any scientific testing. What supposedly happens is the tips of the serrations get hot enough to work harden, giving much better edge retention than a plain edge. It looks like Sal said something about it on the Spyderco forums many years ago and everyone took that and ran with it. When actual metallurgists (such as Larrin) voice their opinion, they all seem to doubt it. The tips won't get hot enough for that, the work hardening wouldn't take it past what's already been heat treated and so on. Nobody seems to know, so don't buy a serrated H2 without knowing your mileage may vary. It could be true, but it might not be

thank You!!
Pete carries his knife collection like I used to carry acorns when I was a squirrel
Nice one Pete. A fixed blade tour would be good
I enjoyed the collection video! Definitely have my eyes on the Grambeau Russ. I also love the look of the Eustler Duk. Cheers!
