This worked beautifully! My filter makes the one in video look clean already. I used 1/2c. & 1/2c. because my filter had started to (obligatory gross-out!) drip, and used a Dutch oven full of boiling water. The family was in the kitchen for the results reveal and we were all so surprised. That disgusting filter came out gleaming! I did brush it also, though it wasn't needed. This technique is a 5 star solution to an impossible cleaning challenge! (FYI: The dish soap used was Dawn Ultra)
I want to say “thanks” again. I did exactly as you said and it came out amazing clean. I am so happy. Btw, I was one of those that had’t cleaned it since i purchased my home! I will not wait as long next time. :)
Your suggestions are incomplete. What you failed to tell the public is that there were other areas in the filter and creases which are also filled to some extent with oil. Cleaning the filter without cleaning the rest of the top is misleading. I strongly suggest that you retape this with complete information.
@@terry2346 I take the dishwasher mechanism apart and clean it. Then I run the cycle very hot 80 minutes my drain from my sink never gets clogged due to the hot water coursing thru it.

First time I tried to remove the filters to clean them, the spring mechanism that kept them in place flipped them out of my hands and flung them into the 1.5” space behind the stove. It was like a rotten magic trick. That was a fun day.
These are all great responses ,lots of gratitude! If it were me you'd all get hearts. This was a great video and the only one I hit. Its easier than I thought. Looking forward to a clean filter once again. Thanks❤️
This works very well. I risked doing it in the sink because I don't have a big enough container for the mesh plates, but it was fine washed down with plenty more hot water, soda & washing up liquid.
I'm happy to see this kind of filter can be cleaned. I am washing it now and found some articles saying you cannot wash only replace...and I think mine is carbon filter? The foamy part. Most how to videos only show how-to clean the wire, part. This video put my mind at ease! So thanks!
@@Goldrefinedthrufire I MEAN TO SAY that , we can wash hood filters in the dishwasher, may be help you not get wet ,,here are meany videos on youtube which advise to wash filters in dishwasher
Most filters are aluminum so the dishwasher is not a good choice. The filters that you can’t clean are the ones with charcoal that help to remove odors.

Either way does this method work,or can you suggest the best way in a link please 🙏!
I replaced an over the stove microwave oven recently. Under the microwave was a stove vent with two filters. I cleaned the filters about once a year. To my stunned surprise when I replaced the microwave oven I found it was saturated with grease beyond the filters. Had there been a stove fire and the flames entered the microwave oven vent system there would have been a massive grease fire.
Lol thank you man! Gonna go try this now, just wanted to comment before my ADD makes me forget to. Just wanted to tell you what you already know, you're hilarious and this is a really nice way to look at a not so nice task. I appreciate your positivity!
You are funny and thus knowledgeable! I love your approach of teaching a boring difficult anxious subject so appealing and interesting encouraging others to go and do it straight away! 👍
Soap and water in a tub in the backyard. Although once it's clean, I like the idea of putting it in the dishwasher once every so often as mentioned in the comments
You give above-average instructions: thorough, not too long and with some light humor. I just subscribed since I see you have many videos giving very informative lessons of interest. Thank you.
Wash it with Lestoil (about 1full cup) in very hot water. Magic! Brush your filter both sides. Rince. Then wash out all the grease in your system. Then put in place your clean filter! That's it!
I just came across your channel, I am amazed at all the different types of helpful videos you have and your delivery of the info made me laugh, which is a very good thing, I subscribed immediately and plan to binge watch all your videos, thank you 👏😂
Tried this on one filter and Simple Green on the other. Simple Green hands down. It just melted off. Got the idea from using it on my bike chain. Used Simple Green on my air fryer. Like new.
Question! What do you do with the gallon of dirty water if you don’t pour it down the sink or drain? Is it ok to just dump outside? Thank you for the video
I just run tap water at its hottest all over it, squirt some dish washing liquid on it and brush it gently with a nail brush, rinsing the filter with hit tap water again. Works like a charm. Of course, if the filter's particularly gunky, your method would work even better at dissolving the caked in grease.
It is easier to spray them with Fume free Easy Off and let set outside overnight. Then hose it down and stand up against the back of the house to air dry.
I throw it always in my dishmachine cleaning hyperclean.much easier and result is exellent.maybe not work ewery filter but mine is steel or aluminiunframed and filter is also metallicbase.so it handle it and i dont need to soaking it and wash and rinse.easy and effective way.
Instead of boiling water and baking soda make a paste of washing soda and equal parts alcohol and Dawn. Press the paste through the mesh, put the filter in a bucket and let it sit 2 hours. Then put the bucket into the bathtub and run hot water through the filter. The grease will have been completely broken down and the bucket can be dumped into the toilet.
Unfortunately, my hood filter is a new delicate filter that will melt with water that is too hot. I mention this in case others also have such a filter. I imagine warm water should work well enough.
I just tried and it worked better than expected. My filter was usd for 5 months. I followed the prep but was stingy on water thinking it would take awhile to work. But the cleaning is done in 1 to 2 min. Just as I pour more hot water I found the hot water can already rinse off all the grease! The key is to find a container big enough to lay the filter flat. I ended up do it in the sink. Yes oil is bad for the pipe, but this is a small quantity.
Great video! I do have a question for you. What is the difference between grease and gunk? How do I know if I have grease or do I have gunk?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for making this video!
I would be concerned about any and all grease in the exhaust hood / pipe . As how is the fan effected by using a flashlight . Could a person clean it properly or needing a hood cleaning company . As I would think begining from the roof down using a steamer ? And follow up with a boriscope ? to see the results from top to bottom . As I believe quite a few restaurants are destroyed by fires in their hood exhausts . Not having them periodically and throughly cleaned .

I’m sorry but you didn’t put back the used filter. You replaced it with a new one because you were hiding the stained old filter that you cleaned.
I agree, the filter he replaced was not the one he removed
no, that's just clean. you can clearly see the bulge in the filter when it is replaced. new filters are flat.
