This worked beautifully! My filter makes the one in video look clean already. I used 1/2c. & 1/2c. because my filter had started to (obligatory gross-out!) drip, and used a Dutch oven full of boiling water. The family was in the kitchen for the results reveal and we were all so surprised. That disgusting filter came out gleaming! I did brush it also, though it wasn't needed. This technique is a 5 star solution to an impossible cleaning challenge! (FYI: The dish soap used was Dawn Ultra)

Your suggestions are incomplete. What you failed to tell the public is that there were other areas in the filter and creases which are also filled to some extent with oil. Cleaning the filter without cleaning the rest of the top is misleading. I strongly suggest that you retape this with complete information.

2016: Brand new kitchen, brand new fancy gas stove and range hood. First time I tried to remove the filters to clean them, the spring mechanism that kept them in place flipped them out of my hands and flung them into the 1.5” space behind the stove. It was like a rotten magic trick. That was a fun day.

I replaced an over the stove microwave oven recently.
Under the microwave was a stove vent with two filters. I cleaned the filters about once a year.
To my stunned surprise when I replaced the microwave oven I found it was saturated with grease beyond the filters. Had there been a stove fire and the flames entered the microwave oven vent system there would have been a massive grease fire.

Of course, if the filter's particularly gunky, your method would work even better at dissolving the caked in grease.

Instead of boiling water and baking soda make a paste of washing soda and equal parts alcohol and Dawn. Press the paste through the mesh, put the filter in a bucket and let it sit 2 hours. Then put the bucket into the bathtub and run hot water through the filter. The grease will have been completely broken down and the bucket can be dumped into the toilet.

I just tried and it worked better than expected. My filter was usd for 5 months. I followed the prep but was stingy on water thinking it would take awhile to work. But the cleaning is done in 1 to 2 min. Just as I pour more hot water I found the hot water can already rinse off all the grease! The key is to find a container big enough to lay the filter flat. I ended up do it in the sink. Yes oil is bad for the pipe, but this is a small quantity.

I would be concerned about any and all grease in the exhaust hood / pipe . As how is the fan effected by using a flashlight . Could a person clean it properly or needing a hood cleaning company . As I would think begining from the roof down using a steamer ? And follow up with a boriscope ? to see the results from top to bottom . As I believe quite a few restaurants are destroyed by fires in their hood exhausts . Not having them periodically and throughly cleaned .

Just dip a rag in turpentine & wipe it twice. It will be clean in a jiffy. Clean the hood also in the same way. Tried this. Thanks
