I liked that the video was long. A lot of techies talk so fast and use words that you just can't keep up with. This video was perfect for exactly what I was needing to learn. Thank you soooo much! Excellent.
Thanks so much. Could not get my monitors to pull up diff images. Your visuals really helped me learn to do this quickly. The other teachers are going to be soooo envious!
Hello! Thanks for sharing these instructions, they seem pretty simple. I do have a question about adding two monitors. I have an Acer Chromebook Spin 513, so far it has been great. I am in the process of adding an office space to one of my spare bedrooms and was wanting to add dual monitors to my Chromebook display for extra productivity. My Chromebook has two USB-C ports. Here is where I am stumped... I have purchased two Samsung 27" curved monitors that I was planning on using. I am able to get one monitor to display as an extension from the Chromebook. I have connected both monitors to both USB-C ports and only one will display/be recognized by my Chromebook. I have two HDMI to USB-C adapters that I have tried, one in each port on my Chromebook and only one display will be recognized. I tried flipping both the adapters to the opposite port and switching the monitors HDMI cables; and still am only getting one monitor to be recognized through one or the other port. I have also purchased a 5 port USB-C Hub that has one HDMI port on it, and still nothing. Any suggestions???
Sorry, I'm not sure why that would be, it should all work together like that. I did a post on Reddit where someone had that Chromebook and only one of the usb-c ports worked for display output. They said the specs stated that both ports support display output, so I'm guessing their Chromebook was just faulty, but perhaps yours has a similar issue. One other thought I had is perhaps the processor isn't capable or running two large monitors and the external display. You could try turning the brightness on the Chromebook all the way down so that it turns off, and then maybe the two external displays would work.
I'm experiencing the same issue. And this is why I've viewed this video. I've bought multiple usb-c>HDMI adapters & just installed a hub with 2 HDMI ports but nothing works. I even tried the tip of using both usb-c ports (1 for each HDMI). Even after switching the HDMI cables the Chromebook only recognizes 1 HDMI cable. 😢
Many thanks Timmy - that is the clearest explanation I have found on using external monitor(s) for a range of Chromebook connectivity options...👍 Do you know if there is any diagnostic function I can use to check if a Chromebook USB-C port supports DisplayPort v1.2 (4K30) or v1.4 (4K60) ? eg. I have an Acer Spin 513 (513-2H), but have been unable to find ANYWHERE (including Acer online documentation) what version of DP it's USB-C ports supports - so I am not sure what is the most appropriate monitor to buy for it.
Sorry, I don't know of any way to tell that, it seems to be very difficult to find out information about DisplayPort versions, it's never documented clearly and by the time you type all the specific parameters into Google, nothing helpful comes up. But from my experience, you can get 4K60 from DisplayPort v1.2 if you use a single USC-C to HDMI adapter, it's only if you're using a USB-C hub that you would be limited to 4K30 with DisplayPort v1.2.
You could use a wireless HDMI transmitter like this: amzn.to/3K69E0R I've never used one, so I'm not sure how well they work, but theoretically, you would just plug one into the monitor, and one into the Chromebook (with a USB-C to HDMI adapter or similar) and the two devices would transmit the signal wirelessly just like an HDMI cable. Alternatively, you could connect a Chromecast to your monitor and cast your Chromebook's screen for occasional mirroring, but the HDMI transmitters would work a lot better.
I've been able to connect my Lenovo Chromebook to a Dell monitor using a startech VGA port and the home screen is mirrored onto the monitor but i can't seem to move my mouse to access the monitor screen neither does my chromebook show the built-in mirror display feature. Please can you give some advice?
Sorry, I don't think there's much I can suggest. If the monitor isn't showing up at all in the display settings of the Chromebook there's not really anything you can do about it. It sounds like a weird incompatibility issue with the adapter or something. But I've never heard of a Chromebook being able to send a signal to a monitor without actually knowing it's there, that sounds quite strange.
Hello ! Thank you for sharing this video . My question is I have a monitor with VGA cable and Chromebook with a cracked screen ( but still working ) . My Chromebook only has a USB C port for charging . I have connected an adapter VGA to USB C , but can’t charge when I use monitor . Any suggestions ? Thanks
That's difficult, unless your Chromebook has another USB - C port, you'll need to get a USB-C hub that supports power delivery and has a VGA port, or one with an HDMI port and an HDMI to VGA adapter. Unfortunately I don't think there is such a thing as a hub that you could plug your existing adapter into.
To use the camera, you probably need to have a USB cable or something going from the monitor to the Chromebook. I'm not 100% sure, but I doubt the webcam signal would travel through the one HDMI cable along with the Chromebook display signal. Audio should work through the HDMI cable, assuming the monitor has speakers. If you click on the time in the bottom right hand corner, then click the arrow next to the volume slider, you'll want to make sure the output is set to the external monitor and not the Chromebook's internal speakers.
Hi, i have a dell latitude chromebook with only 1 usb type c i currently use my hdmi port for my extended monitor, i'm looking to add another monitor, any suggestion or recommendation on how i can add another monitor using the usb c port?
There are a lot of different Dell Latitude models so I'm not sure exactly which ports you have. But if your Chromebook has a dedicated charging port, you'll be fine with a basic USB-C to HDMI adapter: amzn.to/3Q1Bcbz Or, if you need to plug the charger into the USB-C port, you'll probably want a USB-C hub that supports power passthrough so that it can charge through the hub: amzn.to/3XWd7Vs Hope this helps.
i have a usb c to hdmi adapter connected to my tv but my tv is saying that i need to check my chrome books devices power, cable connections, and source selection
How does one usb c port charge my chromebook and at the same time mirror to my tv without an hdmi port? I tried a hub with usb c and hdmi but how can it power the chromebook when there is no electricity charging it? I want to set up the chromebook to the tv and never touch it again. It needs to charge the chromebook and mirror to the tv via hdmi - with only one usb c port.
You would need a hub that supports power delivery. If you have a hub that supports power delivery, you plug the Chromebook's charger into the USB-C port on the hub, and plug the TV into the HDMI port on the hub. Then, the hub will take power from the Chromebook's charger, and pass it through to the Chromebook, while also running the monitor.
I think there are some touchscreen USB-C monitors that work with Chrome OS. But I don't think an overlay addon like this would work on a Chromebook as they probably all requite additional drivers that couldn't be installed on Chrome OS.
I have only 1 USB-C port that works, I broke my other one. I have a USB-C TO HDMI cable, i have a ASUS chromebook. How do i get it to charge and use a HDMI?
I think the only option will be to get a USB - C hub that has power passthrough for charging, and an HDMI port for the display so you can connect them both to the one working port. You will also need to buy an HDMI to HDMI cable if you don't have one already, as I don't think there are any USB-C hubs out there that have a USB-C output capable of running a display. The other option would be to use it for a few hours with the display connected, then unplug the display and charge it for an hour or two, but that's probably not as practical.
@techtimewithtimmy yea, My laptop takes 6-7 hours to charge, with my charger, and It wouldn't be practical for me because that would take away time I'm working on music. If you have a link to the USB hub that has power pass through could you share it?
Oh, so is it really because an update? Same problem here; I can connect my Chromebook to a projector just fine, until 2 - 3 months, and then the update came, and boom, now I can't connect it to whatever external display I have -- using the same adapter, same settings and so on.
Google Chromebook's help page told me some aspect concerning the cable / the adaptor; I quote here some of the related text: "our USB-C cable doesn't support this connection. Replace your cable with a USB-C cable with a performance rating of SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or higher. Make sure it has one of these certified logos." But then again, I don't think it was because the cable nor the adapter, as it perform well before ChromeOS update.
Yes, you can certainly do that. Unfortunately, I don't have a video about it, but I do have a video about connecting an external mouse, and all the same information will pretty much apply to keyboards as well: ua-cam.com/video/x0A7Y9bUkE4/v-deo.html
I tried a USB C to dual HDMI adapter and the 2 monitors work like only 1 monitor. The other monitor does the same as the other. It's like a Macbook. Only ABB but I want 3 different screens. Why?
i have a usb c to hdmi adapter connected to my tv but my tv is saying that i need to check my chrome books devices zpower, cable connections, and source selection
I would suggest you try some basic troubleshooting. Unplug everything and plug it all back in to make sure nothing was loose, restart the Chromebook, restart the TV, and try switching to a different HDMI port on the TV. It's even possible that the ports on the TV might be mislabeled, so HDMI 1 might actually be HDMI 2. So make sure you try changing the TV source to all the different HDMI ports, to check if it works on one of the others.

That's good, that is meant to happen. If you continue watching the video, I explain how it all works at 5:59 onwards.
