Powering Our Off-Grid Property | DIY Solar Install Sol-Ark + HomeGrid Batteries

  • After a long wait, we get our solar system set up and running in the Quonset Hut Shop just in time to harvest sun during the longest days of the year. The Sol-Ark 12K Inverter paired with the 24kWh HomeGrid Stack'd Lithium Batteries and our 3,720 Watt Solar Array should be a great start to power us as we develop our property.
A big shout out to Jason at Long Spring Solar who helped us size our solar system and answer all our questions regarding installation. You can check the company out here if you are in Alaska and looking for a solar system or installation - longspringsola...

If anyone reading the comments has never installed an advanced solar/inverter/battery system like this before, this is one of the most realistic videos on UA-cam. No fake usage of the perfect wiring terminology or doing it 100% right from the start with no screw-ups. If you install one of these yourself for your first time and think it will go better than this, you are either wrong or an electrician 🤣. I have a lot of respect that you guys included the little mistakes, like the conduit size. Just so relatable from my own experience. Great job, love your channel, and thanks for sharing your lives with all of us!

My goodness! The “ honey, let’s do list” just got a big check mark. What you two accomplish by yourselves, is amazing! Eric makes it sound so easy to do all that electrical hookups, and Arielle helping every step of the way is so inspiring ! Does anyone else wonder what the next big project will be……finishing the shop or the greenhouse build? On the oth😊er hand….it doesn’t matter what it will be, we will all wait and watch! Love you both!❤❤

As soon as this was published I went to bed, to watch it without interruptions, and it was so worth it. Eric your knowledge and confidence to keep track of all the bits to do with this installation was amazing, something even my logical and practical mind could not do. Ariel you are more than awesome, giving the cuddles and encouragement as you work alongside Eric, you are both equals in everything that you do, you balance each other out perfectly. I can just imagine how quite it will be without the generators, as you said you could hear the birds....bliss xx

Great job. So proud of both of you. Just a friendly suggestion. For future trenches or cable placement, I would place caution tape with the cables about a foot up from the direct buried cables. This way if you are ever trenching again above or near the existing cables, you will expose the caution tape beforehand, making you aware that you're in proximity to the existing cables. As always, I look forward to your upcoming videos.

I used to work as an electrician and a good practice to avoid getting shocked is that always when you start handling bare wires and connecting them, short circuit them with each other or with a tool etc. That way if there for some reason still is power, the fuse gets blown but you don't get shocked.

Eric, more than Arielle took the lead and truly understood the mission but Arielle, as always, was there as his loyal assistant. Always the joint effort , always the 2 of them, always such an intense learning curve. I'm blown away at the gift they have of understanding their personal strengths and weaknesses and make allowances for them. Your education of people whether in the garden or in solar electricity is incredible. Again I THANKYOU BOTH🇦🇺🤗💞🙏👍👌✌️👏🇺🇸

Welcome to off grid solar for real now. Make sure you look into state and federal kickbacks. It paid for 2/3 of our system. Also make sure to check your connections twice a year. Loose means resistance and heat. Every bit helps in the winter. Look at every vamp. And kill it if you don't need it. Enjoy you have done well. Jim from New Mexico.

i actually heard the sound you speak of last night the generator storm hit at dark went until 11 and we got over an inch of rain with winds and lightening taking out power grid.. so i went out used my dead-mans switch threw the breaker and turned the generator on had it on for about an hour and when storm passed and power was restored went back to normal power. don't use it very often but i am prepared. mine is 6500 watts of sustained wattage. So everything runs here. longest i had mine running was 8 weeks. and yes lots of fuel changing oil and checking plug occasionally. But still runs like a champ when i need it. I am so envious you finally got it up and running good for you guys awesome take care be safe living the dream only some of us dream about. Meaning Alaska here like you i tamed this place. but here there was nothing not even a trial into here so i did it all. i just have electrical grid and Water on demand from rural water.

And A&E said “Let there be light” and there was light. Yay. I was so excited when Eric turned the lever down to solar and the lights turned on in the cabin. Another project accomplished. 🇦🇺 fan.

Great Job! My 48V system is a bit smaller than yours (5kWh), however, it meets all of our needs. Being in the lower 48, we focused our system size on what we needed to keep running some major appliances. In our case, three chest freezers, two refrigerators, and a propane instant water heater (Rinnai).
Our water system operates off of a separate 12V solar system using a marine 12 V water pump and a cistern we fill as needed. The 12V system also powers LED lights in my workshop/shed, ham radios along with a Sirius radio, and entertainment system .
Our big system gives us enough extra juice to power the basics; starlink TV, laptops & phone, Roku, etc. We use Aladdin lamps and solar charged LED lamps for lighting when the juice in the batteries is low typically, Dec-Mar.
Last, our range is a propane Premier1 range. It uses a pilot light to ignite burners which unfortunately is illegal to buy in the USA now, however, the new ones fire off of AA batteries so no 110/120V is needed.
Sorry for this long explanation but...Isn't it nice when the solar is in and everything is working? Isn't it nice to not have to hear the bloody generator? Well for most of the year anyway. We still have the generator for December through March to augment the minimal solar we receive here in NE PA and keep the batteries charged. About 4-hours every other day. Congratulations on a job well done. You will love it! 73 & God Bless, JohnyMac

I think putting a mini split in the room where your electric is would help when it gets real cold. Love your channel and look forward to seeing it each week. ❤

Great job, the only thing I personally would have added to what you did was to get a roll of caution tape and run it in the trench so the next time your digging over or near your power line you get a warning. and if you did get a fridge it would only be 120. and you'll get even more spoiled. Also, get your insolation up in the battery room because lithium doesn't play well with the cold. Also be sure to vent your generator.

I imagine you have a plan for genny backup in winter when the long days end and I can't wait to see it. Great job guys!

I’m over here super impressed.. my uncle has been working with his hands for years and I have a few uncles I’m the renovation business.. my uncle told me he could teach me how to fix a boiler install tile dry wall, install and air vent but electrical is one thing he leave to my uncle. He always said only one thing can happen you do it wrong and it cost you more money to fix it. I’m sure reading the manual helps but this kind of installation did Eric go into a trade school for electrical or is this just years or reading up and UA-cam research. Always enjoyed the raw content no introduction just a this is what we are up to this week find out if it worked. Love the channel
