- We asked our South Asian family/friends and IG followers how anti-Blackness shows up in their lives and we share the responses we received in part II of our anti-Blackness series. We are hopeful that part II of this series can help us better understand the covert and invisible nature of anti-Blackness within South Asian communities.
The funny thing is that Dark Indians treat Black Americans and Africans just as poorly as they are treated in India.

I enjoyed your video. My daughter had a small group of female friends in high school and one of them was South Asian. One day, this female told the group that her parents did not approve of her association with Black people. I told my daughter she was not going to sneak around or hide her friendships with anyone. It is sad that we have to deal with such ignorance.

Jaz Sidhu I am Indian and CLEARLY they are talking about their own experience. By the way if you have a modicum of self awareness- then you would know that we have a HUGE problem with colorism and racism that can be pretty easily generalized because it is indeed that prevalent. Even the most well intentioned people just throw that stuff out casually. Yes of course not everyone is like that, it is kind of implied, but culturally speaking- our priorities are messed up and it’s a fair thing for anyone else to point that out especially if they’ve had to bear the brunt of it. As a South African we have a pretty large South Asian population. I have a few friends who are South Asian and back in the varsity days she invited her friends to her 21st birthday party. Party was fun, talked and joked with her parents during the night and thought we generally got along. She was a good looking person but we were just friends, at the time she was seeing a white guy who was also at the party but nothing was official yet.
A week later I get a phonecall from her dad(we never exchanged numbers) asking me about me and his daughter(my friend) and the nature of our relationship. He allegedly heard rumours that something more was going on. I explained that we are just friends who hang out at varsity in a group with other people,we barely spent anytime alone together because 90% of the time it was a group setting.
He basically tells me to stay away from his daughter, that she doesn't need to be hanging around with "guys like me". I was left stunned because we were just friends and anybody who went to varsity could confirm that(her brother also went to the same university).
After that phonecall I tried to talk to her to find out what was going on as this came from left field as I had gotten along great with her folks at her bday party. She was in her feeling and couldn't really talk or express herself so I decided to give her some time. after the incident, she barely came to varsity, even her other friends saw much less of her.
I had barely spoken to her for a few weeks, then we find out that she going to Vedanta college in India for sometime. We lost contact after that and haven't spoken since.
It still bothers me a little because of how things happened because she was a really cool person.
I'm sorry to hear about that bro. It's unacceptable and our community needs to be better.

As a black person i was VERY aware of the anti blackness in the asian community. My "friends" would always tell me. As a result i became very standoffish with south asian people, im trying to work on that.

As a black man that has traveled all over the world, India included I've found that I've experienced the most anti-black sentiment in Asian countries like China, South Korea, Japan, India, and Indonesia even though a lot of them were darker than me, it's crazy I know. I would like to add that most of them began to treat me like I was white when they realized that I was American instead of African.
Well in some parts of Asia they consider a darker skin tone to be the ideal.. Asia is a very big continent, you cannot generalize.
I have heard of this in Thailand, Africans are treated poorly but African Americans are treated better. I'm not with the shits, if you have a problem with my brother or sister, you have a problem with me.

It just so happens that many people happen to live in communities with other people who are from the same background as them. It is so deeply offensive to see this level of ignorance among people who have come to the United States and opened doors that these people have walked in as a result of our struggle. I'm a black man, age 45, and my Dad was present for most of my young childhood and adult life.
I'm now a father of 2, and I lead my babies to success (ok, they are 21 and 16), in my home.
And you ladies are gorgeous, I love brown people and I've never felt my dark complexion is a detriment, and is a set back.
When I walk through my majority white stores, I walk through like a king, and not some stain on the wall. My confidence is so high, I had work colleagues call me cocky becuse of my knowledge in the IT industry.
I corrected them, and said, don't confuse cocky with confidence. They shut up, and said wow. They thought because their pay grade were 2 steps higher than mine, that their opinions would shut me down. Wrongggg!!!

The movie Mississippi Masala, starring Denzel Washington addressed this topic in the early 90's. Written & directed by an immigrant Indian woman. Maybe, watching the movie as a family or with friends is an excellent way to begin the conversation of anti-blackness in S. Asian households as it addresses both anti-dark skin bias among the Indian community and anti-African American bias in the Indian community.
@Jaz Sidhu You know full well the level of anti blackness in Asian cultures specifically south asian is way more prevalent than the other way around. I dont know a single black family that would disown their children for even associating with let along marrying an Asian person. You can say or think what you want but in my opinion South Asian culture is the most profoundly racist and prejudiced I have come across.

This is very relevant, First Nation and African American have been subjected to such racisms for so long. Blacks have fought for equal rights and paid with their lives and it's decent to see that those who came after them and benefit from what they have fought for are trying to be open, honest and humane.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make videos like this. There are so many of us black people learning to reverse the hate, love/accept ourself, and stand up against racism. As a black person it means so much when people outside of our community not only understand our struggle, but also help to speak up for us in their communities and else where. Again, thank you 🙏🏾

Im black and grew up around alot of indians.... and yes that anti-blackness is REAL. Even amongest themselves its a real problem. I have many indian friends and have seen many gurls especially passed over for marriage simply because they were 'too dark'. Beauuutiful women shamed for a complexion they cant control. Absolutely ridiculous. I never understood how they look down on black ppl skin color when most indians are BROWN just like black ppl. And some even DARKER. As African American women, we as a community not only experience the "anti-blackness" from Asian communities, but we also see the colorism perpetuated within those same communities towards their own people. It's unfortunate but we, in general, view these communities as completely conquered by the white community. We also see that these conversations are now happening because the Trump base is starting to focus more violence on these Asian communities. Considering our AA community has been spurned by these communities for decades, trust doesn't come easily Ijs.🤷🏾♀️

@Jayden Johnson this was the 2nd part- watch part 1 we define and discuss anti-Blackness. I made my t-shirt years ago to present at a conference and used the t shirt as a nonverbal way to take a stance for Black lives- there was no bandwagon then and I’m not apologizing for my commitment to dismantling the system of anti-Black racism in my own community. @Deborah Kerr every community has their conservative segments, which any conservative in any culture can have warped views. If you think about it, black conservatives have views that most black people find absolutely crazy. These women are clearly more liberal and are come across as good people, not to say conservatives aren't but a person that sees people and not stereotypes are generally good people. Just stumbled onto your video randomly, I'm a born in America Malayalee Indian guy, and this was a great discussion about Indians and colorism. I'm not sure how old you guys are, but it was even worse when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s. It effected me, I'm medium brown complexion like you guys, but I still remember I lost friends as a kid when the summer time hit because my mom told me how I would turn black and awful if I played in the sun too much. So I stayed inside and the other kids didn't understand the brainwashing I was getting. Kids in church would make fun of each other and call other kids "karth-kutty". Part of the reason back then was also that Indians just weren't as mainstreamed in America as we are today, and so many people wanted to be an All American White person. Today Indians are basically were Asians were in the 1970s or early 80s America, which still means we have a long way to go but it's way better then the 80s and 90s where Indians weren't on the radar of pop culture and doing everything to be White but still culturally appropriate African American hip hop culture. I still remember asking about an Indian family I hadn't seen in a while back in the the late 80s or early 90s and the explanation I got from people was they lost their minds over their daughter marrying a Black man that they actually packed up and went back to India. This Black guy was a supposedly an Ivy league educated guy like Obama, but they still couldn't handle it. Supposedly they felt they were a disgrace and embarrassment to the Indian community, so they packed up and left, it was both hilarious and sad. Things are far better then the days before say 2000 or so, but still a long way to go.

@@kingknights5107 they definitely cared about their kid getting "too dark." A lot of Indians really do discriminate even amongst themselves based on skin color. A lot of Indians believe "fair skin" is better. It's why bleaching creams are so popular in India.

I am African American, and had a South Asian Biology teacher , who was very dark in high school, She very kind to, and respect to me. I didn't know that she went thru anti-Blackness in her culture. In the 70's we had help with feeling bad about our color with songs like "Say It Loud , I am Black & Proud, Ebony Eyes, and etc.Today we have the song Brown Skin Girls. Thank you for your support also in helping uncover anti- Blackness.

I am black and can relate so much with my wife from Bangladesh. Good thing my in-laws are supportive but some of the family members aren’t and the same for my family. It’s crazy, it doesn’t matter the skin color. I’m f I didn’t meet my wife in Highschool she would of been forced to go to Bangladesh and marry a stranger. Keep up the great content!

I think the comment people make sometimes about black people being lazy is such a powerful symbol of white supremacy. Black people have been stereotyped as lazy ever since they stopped working for free.
Also, the historical connection between blacks and Indians go back much further before white people fractured it. In Ancient times, scholars even referred to India as part of Ethiopia, such was the close connection.
@Jayden Johnson Bro, that's a stereotype that black people only have frizzy hair. There are numerous black people who have no outside mix in them with looser curl patterns/straight hair. One example of this is the black people from the Solomon Islands. Not only is some of the Natives hair not frizzy, but it's also blonde!
Also, the facial features of Africans and Indians are not that different, especially in Southern Indians and Dravidians.
Indians are descended from Ethiopians. A lot of Ethiopians look south Indian.

It’s funny because in the 90s, when my dad worked for the UN, he travelled out to India. He tells this story where some Indian men were laughing at the texture of his hair, but they were darker than him.

There are parts of India where dark skin is valued and worshiped... just like our Gods.. maybe they were making fun of his light skin.. who knows..

It’s the hair. That’s one difference. Straight hair is valued in much of the world. There’s a lot of prejudice with hair. More than most people realize.
These ladies are spot on - in relationship with a South Asian here in the US. I’m African American and much lighter than her and what attracted me to her was her dark skin - on sight I thought she was AA. Yes her parents were prejudice against AA but we manage. She definitely has had to deal with her skin color within her family and almost feels relieved when she’s around mine. Colonization really has lasting effects on all of us but melanin will always prevail.

I am a Black man with black female relatives and friends who honestly look alot like the both of you. There is a lot of South Asian and East African cross heritage that is thousands of years old that gets ignored because of anti-blackness!

People watch too much television the media portrays us black men as animals and that is sad we don't take care of our kids and stuff like that that's truly sad.

Thank you. I've been having this conversation with my students at the college level, for more then 20 years now. In the early 2000's, I found most people, no matter what their background were just not ready to have this conversation. Having acquired friends and students from various backgrounds and having a very diversified family provided me with a unique opportunity. Finally, these conversations are being held and more people are becoming enlightened. That's at least a start. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss this topic on a deeper level. This is a good conversation to have. As black people its not our responsibility to convince anyone about our worth at all because as a people we generally don't have issues with other communities but they some how always have problems with us. If the change needs to happen then it starts with them.
Indians don’t have any issues with others either.. but for these media talking heads and “diversity” professionals to stay relevant and get paid, they have to manufacture racism..

@@kingknights5107 I beg to differ actually. Indian anti-black racism is actually pretty bad. They even have a caste system in India where the darker skinned Indians are seen as inferior. I have a family member who is part Indian whose dad, a black man, was almost killed because he wanted to marry her mom. It was so bad they had to flee the country and to this day her mom's family refuses to acknowledge their union.
@@xavierabii548 Caste system isn't based on color... but rather based on occupation. Some of the darkest skinned people are at the very top.
For any Indian parents, they want their children to marry someone who they hand-pick for them, and someone usually from the same sub-caste of the sub-caste they're in. It is usually a hard situation when their children doesn't follow-through on this. Nothing to do with race or anything else.
@@kingknights5107 It does have to do with race. Because some Indian families will literally disown their children for being with black people. Sometimes they will more easily accept a white person than a black person. It's very sad.

I'm an American and also a world traveler. One thing that has always amazed me is how many Asian, Latin, Arab, and even many Slavic cultures can hold Anglo racial values when those very Western Europeans absolutely view them as inferior.
The amount of racist jokes and family turmoil I've seen in White communities regarding Asians or anyone other than a White person having some intimate connection to the family is off the charts. This particular configuration of White people comprise only 9% of the world's population. It's an incredibly low bar for everyone to jump and be done with and the benefits of doing so seem pretty obvious.

I am Black and Asiatic Indian. My wife is Asian and I have not experienced this phenomenon yet. I pray that I never will! My in-laws love me and all of my sisters-in-law. My entire wife's family fully accepts me.

In college I took a India Civil class which was dope for me. Learning and growing from other cultures is important in my opinion. Learning from others and seeing the history opens up a lot of perspective. Luckily my teacher loves the culture and supportive. Made it easy to understand.

As a Black female, I've just been enlightened about South Asians. Thank you, ladies, for having the courage to have these conversations. It's gratifying to see this.
What most other minorities miss is that any progress made by Blacks often benefit other minority communities. So, essentially, Blacks do the heavy lifting and everyone else reaps the lion share of the benefits of our struggles. Let that stink in.

Thank you for covering this topic As an African American who lived in South East Asia and have dated Indians, I experienced racism and stereotypes first hand. Once my value was realized things changed and in time the stereotype turned in to your different. Long story short is Indians need to realize that caucasians see you in the same light as any person of color. I for one do not expect much from first generation Indians that came up through a caste system. For second generation you must understand that blacks will likely have your back more than whites. This is not meant to say bad things about whites. Learn your history as blacks have never did bad things to Indians or benefited from the colonization, but we are still untouchables in many eyes. Thanks for what your doing I have faith that it will make a difference.
I've noticed black women who date these men for YEARSSSS are surprised when they don't marry them despite meeting and spending time with their families. The women don't understand that the culture accepts them only as play things for their sons brothers etc but accepting them as marriable will never happen.

Well your culture is clearly to generalize everyone into one set of behaviors because of what they look like and completely disregard the fact that people are individuals despite cultures. One of my best friends is middle eastern and he’s married to a black woman. And it was only right, they’re literally best friends and you can tell they’re soulmates. When some of his old fashioned family members didn’t show up to their wedding all he said was “they don’t pay my bills 🤷🏻♂️” oh and one of his cousins married a white girl too and the same thing happened at his wedding, some family members didn’t show up. It is what it is, people like to preserve their cultures but that doesn’t make them racist. You will very clearly know if someone is racist...
This is not always the case. There are black-Indian marriages. Especially in the Caribbean. But yeah, I think most of the time Indian men don't have the guts to stand up for their partners if they're not from the same background. They're really spineless.

Also For having the heart to want to dismantle anti-blackness.I wonder if the south Asian community would want to stand up for black people if they were accepted by white people or if the president never said go back to your country. We should want to stand up for one another because we are all equal as human beings not based on the white man’s approval.
I never understood how Indian people can look down on black people. Our skin color is the same for the most part. It's crazy how people can be controlled so easy just to fit in. I never see what comes from that but weakness. There are smart, lazy,crazy rich people in every race. You can't name not one race that don't have crime. But nevertheless I appreciate your honest I guess we have to start somewhere to end this foolishness. I just hate when people believe a lie and then treat people a certain way off that lie. Thanks for this discussion. I was dating a Sikh woman and her family were a huge obstacle. I told her she had to rise above the racism and focus on us. But, she couldn't do it. I always wondered what it would be like to be with someone that wasn't of African decent without the racist influences. Regardless of income or social status, people should be free to love whomever they want.

So . . . Thank you for clarifying. I have been trying to figure out why South Asian People [Men In particular] have turned their faces up at me for years!!! I work in IT, I live in a predominately "Indian Community" in my complex. I've been here since 2014 and I've stopped putting up with the judgment and began confronting these men in a "Passive Aggressive Manner" by exchanging words that are well thought out and advanced, or purposely crossing paths when I'm dressed in suites with my luxurious leather office gear, etc . . . All in an effort to get them to see I'm nowhere near what they think, I'm actually open to a conversation with these racist South Asians.
It's not just the facial expressions, it's the mannerisms. I speak or greet myself, they keep it moving . . no response, hard ignorant stares as they drive by me when I'm taking out the trash or going to the gym or my HUB .. . I even considered dating an Indian woman just to get the "Scoop" on South Asian men/People so I can be aware of what they actually think about little ole hardworking me . .
Thanks to your videos I will subscribe, I had an idea that what you both spoke of was exactly what I thought but I gave my "Hunch" the benefit of doubt and assumed they were devoutly religious people or something . . .
Keep doing what you are doing, I appreciate it, and working in my field of expertise I definitely want to know what they think and why . . I think it is sad and dismissive to judge people like that and swear they're right about the BS but, it is what it is . . .

South Asians are in general profoundly anti black. I am a black man living in the UK and there is a large south Asian (Indian and Pakistani) community here. Let me tell you something they have a very open and obvious hatred towards black people. Not all but a very large number. I don't know if its the caste system, the lasting effect of colonialism but it's there. Its gotten to the point where I can't even interact with them effectively. I haven't seen anti blackness to that extent from any other ethnic or racial group. Not middle Eastern, Latin American, East Asian or Eastern European. Assuming you live in the US with their increasing numbers there it's only going to get worse. So prepare yourself and educate yourself and other black people in your community if they don't already know about it.
Literally this goes both ways. I feel as a Chinese American that grew up in the hood with mostly black and Hispanic people we RARELY talk about the anti-Asian in their community and the fact that half of the Asian hate crime is committed by poc shows that.
And before people come at me and calling me "racist" realized that most of these antiblack Asians are usually the ones that grew up in white neighborhoods and are calling themselves out for being racist toward black people. Asian Americans that grew up in black communities are NOT LIKE THAT.

We are the most disrespected race in the world and yet our ancestors was Kings and Queens 5000 years ago with the first civilization but we let the west tell our history of negative about us .
This is a much more complex issue than it appears on the surface. I am a multi-racial, light complected African American male. The racism that I have encountered from South Asians has been manifested mainly as arrogance and condescencion from those in the tech industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of the South Asians parade around like they are royalty, like they are as white as Newt Gingrich in spite of being undeniably dark skinned which, of course, is perplexing to light complected African Americans, many of whom could pass for White themselves if they chose to do so. Many of the of the South Asians that I have encountered act towards Black Americans as if they have more of a right to be in the U.S. they they , the Black Americans, do. To be fair, I also have to say that on the other hand, Some of the coolest and sweetest people that I have known have been Indians, Pakistanis and Nepalese. Some of my best friends have from these countries. Others have been there for me when I was in need. I cannot speak regarding people from other nations in that region as I have limited experience with them.

First of all, you ladies are drop dead gorgeous and the shorter one, you look like my cousins daughter - almost identical. I am a Black man and it really warms my heart to hear ladies of Indian South Asian descent talk with empathy for black people and our plight within this country. As I have listened to many other ethnicities, I can see that anti-blackness is something that is pervasive not only here in America but around the world. Just think of how it feels that you're hated, despised, looked down upon, not accepted, made to feel unwanted and less than everybody else ALL Around the World. WOW! Unfortunately, our white brothers ladened us with this unshakeable label centuries ago which causes not only others to hate us but has even caused self-hatred to some degree due to this strong denigration of our Blackness - (the old saying says, "if you hear something long enough, you start to believe it , even if its Not true"). That is why we are forced to say, I'm Black and I'm Proud, and Black Lives Matter! Until We All become Honest with ourselves about the damage we may have done towards our fellow human beings, [in our feelings and attitudes, generational teaching about "others", in our speech] we will never be free of these racist ideologies. But I'm Encouraged by you Ladies and the new generation of people who are waking up to understand that WE ALL ARE APART OF THE OTHER and what affects one, affects or infects us all. Heck, just look at the Coronavirus! We are All affected by it. So Ladies, Thank you for speaking up! You're voices are Credible and they are heard and are having impact. Keep UP the Good Work!!!
