As an Indian who was trafficked as a child I always embraced my darker skin and found a kindred unity in black people. It still feels like black people are the only group that understands my story. Plus my dna test shows that being from Sri Lanka my origins come from Sudan with hints of Ethiopian

I was adopted to white people through international mission of hope and despite my yt families attempts to keep me connected with my community I was rejected by the Indian community from a young age. I have lived with a sense of no identity or community my whole life that’s why when I say how I was cut from my roots, the black community embraced me due to those similarities

As a Desi (South Asian) I have to say that everything you said is true regarding colorism. We have been mentally colonized and have yet to shake off the shackles of colonialism. We would not have been allowed in the United States in mass numbers if it wasn't for the Civil Rights Movement. We owe a lot to Black America for what they have done in helping our community, and have forgotten that we are indebted to them for paving the way for our freedom. The same can be said in other parts of the world where Blacks and Indians have inhabited the land together.
Yeah usually Desis like Black's are treated badly almost anywhere they go be it in the West, Middle East, Near East, Far East, and other dots yeah.

As a Black educator, in the American Public School System, I have actually come in contact with Indian teens that stated they wished they were lighter or even white in skin tone. It is truly a sad sight to see...On the other hand, I have also encountered racism from the Indian community because of the color of my skin. But the ironic part is that they were either the same color as me or darker.
I have encountered Racism from my South Indian friend’s mother, she never liked me because, I am “Black”when I asked my friend why, she said, her mother doesn’t want to be reminded of her past, of how she was treated badly in India; or to be associated with, anyone who is Black. Her Classism, Colorism and Racism, can never leave her, and her “isms” contributed to her hatred toward anyone who is of dark complexion. Is that ignorance, superficial social values or opportunist practices ?

I live in an apartment in Austin where a few indian people lived and when I went upstairs in the lounge room to go study a random Indian guy came up to me and was asking me if I lived here and checking if I get emails from the apartment news just to see if I really lived here. As a black man I just want to be left alone in peace. I'm going to build a house and get my own land in africa and take my girlfriend and start a family there because I want peace and my kids to enjoy life.
Self hatred and contradictory of Darker skin Indians.
I will never bleach my skin. I was raised in the 60s. Where it was very difficult being special dark chocolate. My mom always told me to respond. The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice. That I'm extremely beautiful despite what others say. She taught us that people were envious of my complexion. I use to watch my mom lay out in the sun with coco butter. James Brown said it best at that time. Say it loud, "I'm BLACK and I'm PROUD! Thank you mom

The 60s era was STRONGLY "BLACK & PROUD", "Afrikan Motherland"- Blackness, natural hair, etc.
* My mother was Dark Chocolate, and my father was "High Yellow" (Louisiana) Creole.
* There were many, many marriages/couples like this

Thanks so much for this video. I am a Black Canadian of British Caribbean descent. I was fortunate to spend two weeks touring in India. I always say that my trip taught me so much about my own Caribbean descent because I saw the effects of colonialism. I noticed that immediately I was bombarded with billboards and TV ads of skin lightening creams and thought that it was so sad. I am dark-skinned with an hourglass figure and wear my Black Girl Magic with extreme pride. I've often worn my natural hair. My mother and sister are much more lighter complexed than I am. I recall that when I was about 13 a Black boy told me that he wouldn't like me because I was dark. Funny as an adult I've noticed that I'm often told that I am beautiful by White men and women mostly because of how I carry myself and my confidence. So my point is that confidence is beautiful in whatever skin tone you are blessed to come into this world in. Embrace your beauty.

Don't feel bad. I heard something similar right here in America.
Had once liked this young boy who was in my school. I was in the same class as his sister. Thought I had hit the jackpot one day when his sister invited me over to their house. She knew I liked her brother. However, I noticed throughout the short visit my classmate was acting kind of standoffish. Moreso, than usual.
At one point when their mom and older sister went outside my classmate ushered her brother into the living room where we all were sitting. Next thing I know she looks to me and says, " (my name) I don't want you to take this the wrong way but my brother has something to say to you". Part of what sparked it was the mother seemed to tightly control the 'cultural category' of friends she allowed her kids around. So, when I showed up at the house the mother did not think I was a part of their cultural group. I was naive at the time and didn't understand the full scope of the incident until many yrs later.
Stupid me here I'm thinking he's going to finally ask me out. No, the whole 'visit' was a set up. The mother and older sister's 'exit' from the house was so that my classmate and her brother could lay the bombshell out on me in privacy / away from the mother who, didn't have the decency to face me herself.
My classmates brother comes from another part of the house and says to me: "I'm sorry my mom didn't speak to you the whole time you've been here. Actually, my mom doesn't allow me to talk to or date anyone who is not, Creole". My mouth was on the floor.
Needless, to say none of them ever had to worry about me talking to ANY of them, again.
.....and as for my former classmate. She was so embarrassed by what she and her brother were put up to tell me that, every time she saw me after that, her stuttering went into overdrive !!!

Back in 1994 I met an East Indian man, a physical therapist. I asked him about racism in India. He said that there is no racism there. There is a cast system. I told him that that cast system is based on skin color. He denied that. I told him that that is the evil shameful truth worldwide wherever the colonizer/oppressors have invaded people who look like him and me. He was lighter than me, but still brown. I was older than he. I told him that at a point in his life he will realize that truth.
My family is Indian subcontinental (but they moved to the west in the 1970.
People in the subcontinent have bigotry but it’s not based on race.
Bigotry there is based on religion, caste (which is based on jobs and social class), wealth, language.

She's so right! Racism & anti Blackness is deeply engrained in the Indian community & has simply been exported to the diaspora. This is treated hush hush & publicly denied. I was shocked to learn that dating or marrying an African is taboo in Indian communities in South Africa & normally leads to being disowned. This happened to a South African friend who was forced to move to another region of the country.

My fiancee and I are about her complexion. Darker skin is beautiful and parents need to teach their kids that.
Ace ortiz..Ofcourse and the darker skin is protected by the sun. We age slower, stay looking younger longer, skin don't burn while in the sun, less cases of skin cancer and it glows. I just love color and no one will EVER convince me otherwise.

I went to Southern Indian and spent 2 months in Hyderabad . I went to purchase some body lotion and every product had lightening cream in it . Almost on every billboard was an advertisement for bleaching cream. Colorism is real. I met a lovely lady entrepreneur who said that her husband calls her blackie and that her father-in-law only cherishes her lighter daughter, not her darker daughter 😢 I also went to Karnataka where in the capital I did see more melanated Indians in capital, Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore). There is a melanated population called the Siddis.The Siddis of Karnataka are an ethnic group inhabiting India. Members are descended from Bantu peoples from Southeast Africa that were brought to the Indian subcontinent as slaves by Portuguese merchants and Arab traders.
Yeah colourism is real here. And most people wants to look fair/lighter. That's the reason those girls/boys get more proposals who look lighter skinned.

Talking about skin bleaching in the Caribbean, it is prominent in the Dominican Republic. When I saw a recent picture of former Chicago Cubs All Star Outfielder Sammy Sosa, he was unrecognizable. Whatever he's done to his skin in my opinion is criminal. It reminds me of Malcolm X said to an audience, " who taught you to hate yourself."
When Sosa played for the Cubs he was embraced with his dark skin, however after his retirement and return to his homeland The Dominican Republic, he became maladjusted thereby believing a white skin tone was necessary for his self esteem. Granted he was already a hero to the Dominican people, baseball is the national sport, and MLB is flooded with Dominican players, so why did he find it necessary to become white? He drank the wine of white supremacy, it's hurtful to see it, but it is what it is.
I used to be a fan of Sammy Sosa when he was in the majors. I saw the same picture that you saw and lost all respect for him.

This is what I told my son when he got admission to enter university to study medicine he was the only black in the department of medicine, I told him that he should remember where he was coming from and he should remember what he is going to face him in that university as the only black child facing the whites students, I told him you are there to get the most prestigious knowledge of your destiny, be proud of yourself as a black man, don't allowed any one to disvalues you or disrespect you be consistent on your journey and get to the mountains of your favorite choice of futures and i told him to be always proud of the colour of your skin and always be confident of yourself, he should never look at their faces but he should look at the beauty of his black colour, he should concentrate and never give a dam of whatever they said about him, today my son is a graduate of medicine working in the hospital, when we were going to his graduation day we took Uber to the prestigious University with his girlfriend he was telling the white Uber driver that he is black proud man and he will never be ashamed of his beautiful colour of his skin. no matter what they said I am a proud woman of colour and nothing else.

I think this was Phil's best conversation / interview of all time. I had a co-worker who I became friends with. She was from India..we got along fine. Went to lunch together..talked about racism and every other subject under the sun. So I know there are people that don't feel or treat AA the same.There was mutual respect between us as it should have been.
The same thing happens in Mexico. If you watch your soap opera, The all the actors are very very light skinned Mexicans. There are no dark-skinned Mexicans on TV

One day he introduced me to his cousin but before he did, he told me that his cousin was jealous of him because my boyfriend was so good-looking. My school social worker was from India I thought he was Black we went back and forth on it for years I couldn't understand back then I was dark but he was far darker in complexion than I was I always ignored his accent but he told me on our last session I am not African but I am a Black Indian of Indonesian descent and shook my hand I just wish I could remember his name 😔 shame on me . I was disturb when I watch this video last week on youtube of an Indian Mother using bleaching cream on her son, and was totally fine with it. Her video was showing people how they can actually do it.

Great discussion Phila and Shweta. I am of Afrikan origin(s) and I say it this way only because the same whites gave us the name blacks. I grew up in the US and have been living in a country in East Afrika for a bit over a year. I have so much to say on your discussion but, I won't be able to capture everything now because I have to finish up dinner.
Phil, I want to say that you will find some of us in the US using skin bleaching creams (whiteners/brighteners). True we are generally on a path to "trying" to love the skin that we are in but if you go into any beauty supply store in the hood you will find those products. There is also at least one "black" owned company who I won't call out, who has soaps and creams that contain these products. I believe colorisnm is still alive and well in our communities in the US, perhaps just not as overt as previously.
You mentioned them (in India) loving their colonizers. Well, that happens here as well. They did such a fantastic (horrible) job with damaging folks psychologically worldwide; this is not a strange , but common phenomenon. You are right that many of them (white people) want our skin tones; they also want our facial features, body types, mannerisms, etc. Many are even trying to hijack AAVE (Ebonics). Of course we are not a monolith as is no group of people but we dp of course share some traits and characteristics. Many of these things coming from us are judged negatively while from the appropriaters ithey are judged as cool, creative, and inventive.
Shweta, it is the same here as far as the white women dressing in traditional clothing or not and being revered and they are generally treated better that other Afrikans or people of Afrikan decent.

Greeks used to call Africans western Ethiopians and they used to call Indians eastern Ethiopians. They called us by those terms because their existed strong cultural ties between Africa and India at the time. Infact India was called Indo-Cush at the time. This talks to the connection between Africa and India. If you look at some Indian gods and the earliest images of the Budha, there is no doubt about the connection between Africa and India. We need to look for things that connect us than separate us for the good of both peoples....
We can see this, but until they get their people’s heads together, we cannot afford to be their victims.

This video has highlighted the importance of having good education from good people at a very young age. Being a British born Nigerian and relocating at a young age of 7 to Nigeria has done me a world of good. I’ve never had any issues with the tone of my skin (I’m as dark as they come) but having role models who look like me achieving great things from a young age has fortified me mentally. I returned to the UK at 17, and I am unable to look at a person with a different skin tone, be it lighter or darker as superior or inferior despite now having letters after my name.

In the late 90’s while working in a hospital in Washington DC, a new very, very dark Indian physician who was much darker than me became quite irate when another co-worker commented on his beautiful skin. He said “ I am not a Negroid” and walked away. It made me angry at the time, but after listening to this, I imagine he was bullied about his dark skin.
Do not empathize with people like that. It’s not just skin color, he was saying the he is not a ni66er like you. Some whites are ridiculed for being too pale and I would not empathize with them either.

I worked in dermatology, where I learned to love and appreciate my color. White patients would tell me they loved my skin cuz I don’t have to worry about skin cancers and wrinkles. Some were even jealous. Some whites are even mixing with us according to them, to ensure the survival of there future generations cuz the ozone layer being destroyed would destroy them. I was surprised to see that video. I love my melanated skin.♥️ I am from Trinidad and we have that problem with the Indians there, they make up a large part of the population, came there as indentured laborers.

I've worked at jobs in the United States where the non citizen, on visa, African employees would allow the Indian employees to discriminate against them. They would allow ALL the foreign employees to abuse them. It was deplorable.

This was a fantastic presentation Brother. Both of you brought out poignant points that we all need to consider. I think one of the most powerful things that was brought up that should've been touched on more and maybe you can invite her back so that you can reach our audience with this point. You mentioned our Black is Beautiful movement which lifted self-esteem. There is a need for some type of Black Beautiful movement in India, even if only regionally. This was a key gem African Americans shared with the world. So powerful it reached back to MotherAfrica. When you said I would visit India because Black people are everywhere and want visit your people. Powerful! It would be great to see you two to converse more because there c is an Awakening of the Black /Melanin Consciousness and esteem. This story she told was now understood of most East Indians that I've met in NYC were prejudiced against Black women. The men with Indian descendants were more ready to approach me for sexual fantasy acts, but their women gave off disdain attitudes toward me. I didn't know that the women was insecure or low esteem about the color of their skin. I've never had those problems even though, I'm from Bklyn NYC in the 1960s. But, I've never used white creams to lightened my skin color, which Phil said she definitely needs therapy. Thirty year's of brainwashing and not accepting who you are, and then her daughter asked her why she's using this product. She was about to pass this stigma down generations. Sadly, writing her book, but she needs to do World conference tours especially in her country India in 2023 and talk about, it still goes on.

I have used bleaching creme to target specific scars and blemishes (acne etc.)-not all over. I was so embarrased buying it in person. I didn't want anyone to think I was trying to be light skin.
I do know a few American black women that bleach their skin all over. I know high school kids that will not swim because they don't want to get a tan. They bunch up under umbrellas and hide under towels.
Though I was the darkest of three kids, I never felt the need to be light. But, I do feel I was treated differently, by friends and family, because I was medium brown and tanned very quickly during the Summer.
It's a shame our own people engage in colorist. Our many shades make us unique. We need to be proud of that.
