Wow, that was surprising. I didn't expect this to be so good. This was really well made, and full of useful buying advice for a potential buyer like me. Thanks very much :) I have subscribed, and I hope you get a lot more views, as that would be fully deserved!
On my 172 ph1 I've had my cam belt snap and my exhaust fall off on separate occasions, thankfully not killing the car, I wasn't aware these were a common issue on the clio until seeing this video, but asides these issues(which can be prevented) the clio 172's and 182's are brilliant little cars, 15 year old car and it still stands it's ground nowadays :)
i have a arctic blue 182, owned for a couple of years now, and this is a good, fair review. Other than then comment about the clutch being light (which has already been commented on). Well done RandomReviews.
Expect rattles lots of rattles. Other than that it's a sweet ride. I had the fortune of finding one that had most of the mods I want done to it already. I'm having some of the lowering taken off though. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/uKgJBZdyLfb0_Ts3Hu1izbLyArZ2df1h6GHBh6M6PeOeXWsfW5CAil98Hszix1EGT8cT60-UMw_
ive had one of these. really fun nippy cars. when you ask whether its had a belt done ask whether its had the dephaser pulley changed. this is another common problem!
Great car. I have one and it goes very well, on road and track, even in fairly standard tune. Gearknob is simple to replace, steering wheel can be refurbished in leather for £100, gearstick gaiter is simple fix.
RandomReviews royalsteeringwheels.com/ I believe it is about £100 to retrim the 182 steering wheel, depending on what you go for of course. They do some top marques, but plenty of people with 172/182's have had theirs sorted out with these guys.
Very good review! best colour for the 182 imo. Always wanted one of these! although i suspect getting a sturdy one these days that isn't going to be a money pit is difficult.
good review of the clio 182 points out the issues with the 182 u mite have if u go to buy one very good pointers to luck for when purchasing a clio 182
Great review, mate ! Love the shots and hearing your impressions. I'm not big into french cars but I know people in the UK have a thing for them. This one sure looks like fun ! Keep the videos coming !
TheGetawayer Thanks Guido! It means a lot coming from you! I will try to get a few more reviews in, although summer is nearly over and time is not on my side currently. But I will try :)
Had one of these for a few months now, only payed £1400 and not spent a penny on it yet. Agree with everything you've said, it really does have two personalities, potter to work or sling it around the back rounds...great stuff. Build quality is a bit dubious but its what you expect. Clutches are generally heavier on these anyway iso expect a slightly stiffer clutch pedal than your typical run about. Cliosport.net is a fantastic resource for these cars
Thanks for helping out the community... I agree that the clutch is heavier than your modern hydraulic operated systems, but the clutches do become very stiff with age and wear on these Renaults from experience. Good, affordable, fun little cars! £1400 is a steal!
I've been looking at a 55 182. The most blazing thing about it from a rational view is that it is in fact a 10-year old French hatchback. Now this doesn't mean it will definitely die on me within the first 100 miles. I have a 51 Clio 1.4 that continues to run smoothly to this day (thanks to being properly looked after). But I know my Clio has been looked after and I don't know if this 182 has. That on its own puts a barrier between me and buying it. The 182 in question is a little more expensive than most you'll find on the market. Does that mean it is in a much better condition? Perhaps. But it's still a risk. The problem is I really want a 182 but the longer I leave it, the older they become and the less chance I have of getting a decent one.
Nice, informative, on board vid. I was surprised to see in the on board footage that the Clio had done 105,000 miles, as it appears quite tidy. It seems like your mate had a real bargain there!. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some of the personal attacks against you on here just aren't necessary. Keep the reviews coming, I say!. Cheers.
Budget around £1,000 on top of the purchase price to sort the car out. Tyres, clutch, cam belt, aux belt, water pump, injectors, camshaft oil seals, lower arms, driveshafts, gearbox It’s going to need one or more of the above.
That's exactly why you need to inspect and test the car before you buy it. MOT should pull up lower arms and tyres. If it's got history of Cambelt & auxbelt with a clutch that feels half decent and not soaked in oil on the underside you're half way there. Injectors aren't exactly expensive, i'd be more concerned about the UCH!
Literally spent £1000 on my new 182 and when I was driving out the garage the Aux belt tore apart and stopped the Cambelt in its tracks so not a happy bunny but at least I now have to spill my own blood on the car to actually make it mine lol. Great review and I had a chuckle when you said exactly what mine had just done :D
Hey Niall. Sorry to hear about the Aux belt failure, that really sucks. Hopefully the engine was at low RPM when the timing went out and the pistons are OK, unless you are replacing the engine?
Yeah just reversing out of garage and heard the tap tap tap of a torn bit of Aux belt flying around and then engine stopped so the Cambelt has either slipped a notch or the Aux belt is wrapped round something it shouldn't only time will tell :)
Nice one, I've got a 182 as a daily and it's been great. Their an absolute bargain at the moment. It's a nice balence of old skool hot hatch (I've also got a 205) and modern with all the useful toys like cruise control, climate control and comfortable seats. I also like that it has a nice, uncomplicated powertrain, all the more modern turbo hatches that I've owned have been a pain in the arse to maintain, aside from the belts on the Clio it's been brilliant. I think stuff like the rattles and crap trim/ steering wheel give an impression of unreliable/badly built when in reality the soft touch lined VW products I've owned have actaully been terrible. Perceived quality wins sometimes.
Thanks for sharing your thought's. They are simple in their design by today's standards and like you say, are much easier to maintain without the likes of a dual mass flywheel or turbo charger thrown into the mix.
Make sure dephaser is changed! If the engine sounds like a diesel then dephaser cambelt water pump and aux belt get em changed expensive but worth it, should run like a knitting machine not an old tractor.
Also listen to the engine, if it sounds like a transit when warm, get the de phaser pulley changed when the belts are next due. Decent review otherwise !
Thanks. I guess this is open to interpretation 'quite light'. After replacing clutches on the Renault Sport Clio's, they do become much lighter, due to wear on the friction plates, the pressure plates seem to become very stiff to operate. The difference between an old clutch and new clutch is profound in my experience. Granted, these are not fluid operated clutches and are stiffer to operate than in most other cars.
Just sold mine with 138000 miles on the clock still drives perfectly but the electronics and interior were falling to bits, for example the handle for the passenger to hold onto fell off LOL , and the sunroof developed a massive leak on wet days id get soaked, it really sickens me that the French tease us Brits this way, they make a great fantastic drivers car that can be thrashed all day on a track but then let it down with poundland interiors LOL , one of the worst was the old Saxo VTS another fantastic fast car ruined by cheap plastic interiors
I was interested in getting it as my first car but the cost of repairs seems scary. Any good alternatives? I don't want a car which spends a lot of time in the shop...
+TassieLorenzo Valid point Tassie and thanks for the comment. Fair point, although the Type R is in the next price bracket realisticly. A little more 'hardcore' for everyday use but a nice option
Customer walks into the Clio Sport dealer "Would you like some fine handling with your chassis Sir?" Yes please Would you like some decent performance with your 2 Litre engine Sir?" Oh, most certainly "Would you like some reliability to go with that?" No thank you
Worst car for faults IV ever owned sorry love the car pity about its constant engine management issues abs issues replaced nearly everything still never know what sort of mood it going to be in its serviced constantly it I mean what sort of car do you take a drive runs great no issues then go back in a hour later reverse out drive and bang abs ezp serv light on non stop constant issues
The older Clios are totally unreliable mate, once bought a 1.2 1998 clio parked up to do shopping and when i got back a yellow light appeared and the car would never turn over again, had to scrap that thing, have also had issues with the diesel version too where the EGR valves would fail resulting in clouds of smoke when you drive along lol
@@yopstender2942 Yeah as an owner of a 182 the gearbox is crap , way to slow to engage gear and why the fuck did Renault make the clutch so heavy ? its like changing gear in a HGV everytime LOL
Wow, that was surprising. I didn't expect this to be so good. This was really well made, and full of useful buying advice for a potential buyer like me. Thanks very much :)

I'm sold. I've found the one I'm buying. Roll on next week.
Psilocybe 3 I know its been a year, but how is it? Debating getting one soon, feel someome with a years experience would have a good opinion!

The clutch in these are heavy too!
Properly decent review mentioned the main things but also small bits like oil level silliness makes this a good review 👍🏽

Great review, very helpful👌🏻
Great video mate your car videos are ace , did this clio come with full history etc when your friend got it?
+Alex Heath I don't think this car came with much history, it was a trade in at garage
Also listen to the engine, if it sounds like a transit when warm, get the de phaser pulley changed when the belts are next due. Decent review otherwise !
many thanks for great video
+Antti-Ville Orava You're welcome and thank you for your kind words
Spot on.
When did Robert Webb start reviewing cars
good review thanks
the budget alternative to the ep3 type r and a good car in its own right
Good video but the clutch should be light thing is completely wrong. These are notorious for being heavy, it's a renaultsport trait.
+RandomReviews Had an 05 one for 6 years now, clutch has always been stiff.
Hi, you said your friend paid £1500 for it, thats seems cheap. How many miles did it have on the clock when he purchased it? Thanks
Hi Zac. I believe it had literally just touched 100,000 miles when he purchased it a couple of months prior to filming this review.

Cheers. Yeah, sorry about the colours; contrast issues, my bad.
great review....Bristol?
Thanks Shaun... Bath & Cheddar
Sounds great when you hit 70!
nice video. :) but I must say the ep3 type r is a quality product, on the other hand, so why not get one of those instead? :)
+TassieLorenzo Valid point Tassie and thanks for the comment. Fair point, although the Type R is in the next price bracket realisticly. A little more 'hardcore' for everyday use but a nice option
+RandomReviews Also the costs of maintaining a type-r is significantly more - I saw my friends bills and its not pretty when they start to go!
Also some people care about appearance and the clio is a far nicer looking car.
"Reliability on these cars isn't too bad if the previous owner has spent mega dollars on maintenance"
Said no Toyota owner ever.
It's so funny!! The best old school hot hatch!! A lot of noise when U push it!!!
I will subscribe if u know the service times un kilometers as Am looking for one but i want to know when its first major service is? (From México)
Clutch quite light? lol never seen a Clio with a light clutch.
Nice example, I have Clio.
Was this filmed in Bath?
