You participated in a historic opportunity. That is the holy grail for our time. The VOA record collection. Jaw dropping to floor. VOA was and still is govt radio broadcast used to promote American Democracy across the globe. My dad used to work for them for awhile after the war.
Voice of America was the only international American radio station for many years, broadcasting on short wave radio. It was an important source of news to millions of people around the world over many years. Editorial content was controlled by the U.S. government
Hey Dillon your generosity and love for all the VC shines through in all that you do in sharing the fruits of your labor with us...if it were not for your profound dedication in finding, sharing and introducing many of us to these musical gems past and present, we would all be the poorer for sure...a heartfelt ❤ thanks on behalf of all of us!!!
You and th 10-Minute Record Review guy would make for a great cross-over team! Hoping to witness it!!! Glad they got you into this collection! Hope it all works out splendidly for all parties!
Great video and what an incredible collection! Savatage "Hall of the Mountain King" and Sanctuary "Refuge Denied" LPs both classics. Still have my copies here which I bought back in 87.
Great score for a great record store owner! Glad you are the person to buy some of this great collection. What a story! You must have needed a massage ! Especially your poor fingers!
My UA-cam channel subscriptions are merging! I know about Voice Of America from The Report Of The Week/Reviewbrah. However, my disappointment is NOT immeasurable and my day is NOT ruined, because this collection is stunning. Thank you for allowing us to live vicariously through you. The way you preserve the stories behind these collections with the stickers is just one of the coolest things I have ever seen in the vinyl market. Digging through this would be the most fun I could realistically ever expect to have, haha. The photos of clumps of white-label promos are mind-blowing. Also: Greatest mid-video promotion ever. Something I finally care about!
They even had VOA postage stamps back when they were 5c. I really enjoy finding radio station used records including records of PSAs and commercials. People pass those off as junk. Do these come with a premium for being part of this collection?
Dillon, this is a mega achievement, both for your business and you personally I am sure: congrats sir! I personally would LOVE to learn more about the VOA radio schedule where these records (presumably by the labels sendint them) were being showcased, particularly which DJ’s spun which genres! Take care.
This is insane. After that collector bought the auction, I watched another video on this a few months ago. As soon as I saw those markings on the records you posted on Instagram, I knew exactly what you got into. Crazy.
Fascinating. As a lifelong Cincinnatian, I passed by VOA pretty much everyday. The antenna arrays were unbelievable. Being an old guy, thinking back, it looked like something from a sci-fi novel LOL. Did you visit have time to visit the museum? Was the owner private individual or another record store? I would’ve loved to have a few hours to pick thru. Great video and congrats
The CBC Radio Canada dumped their entire vinyl collection just before covid. It was a massive treasure trove of vintage and NM records going back decades. I came across a very small portion of it in one record store in Toronto and scored some NM albums by Jacques Brel (good for me, at least). I can only imagine what their jazz and classical selections must have been like.
WOW!!! What an opportunity. Lucky you. I'm envious. Did you get those Tin Machine records? Like you said, that Iggy Pop promo was worth the trip. You skipped some good ones but so many boxes to go through. Score!
Every time I see one of these videos I'm like "how can he possibly find a better collection than this?" and you always do! Absolute insanity. Keep it up Dillon!
I'm glad these records ended up in a good place. Many people in the community were concerned about the acquisition of the collection. The guy that bought has less than zero knowledge of records. I'm glad he decided to not hoard it or piece it out to scavengers and unscrupulous dealers. I'm so glad you got a good chunk of this collection. Well deserved.
wow my friend, simply amazing. i've dug through some massive collections but nothing like that. Never ever seen the wlp of Folsom Prison, crazy. I can only imagine what else is in there. That Raw Power looked minty AF. congrats!
Freaking epic Dillon! I became aware of this collection being sold a couple of months ago by watching another channel… a Canadian gentleman. Anyway, what a dream to be able to dig into that archive! Wow man… Couldn't happen to a nicer or more deserving Record guy than you. Glad I'll be able to bid on some stuff coming up… Got to get my Whatnot In order!
Wow! That collection was incredible… just stacked with gems. Your excitement levels must have been going through the roof when you first saw those boxes. Mind blowing! One question Dillon, will you be going back to the guy for round 2 or have you bought all the stuff you wanted?

That is so cool. You had me at "Five MONO copies of Bookends"! Not to mention what looked like a MONO Sweetheart of the Rodeo, which is even more scarce. Every collector's dream.
Hi Dylan, I like your M.O. I feel the passion you exude when saying, "I'll make sure these records go to the right people" the way you look when you speak those words, says to me that you don't mean the person with the deepest pockets. Been watching for a while now. You're doing good work, Keep on keeping on!!
I remember when this guy was showing this collection on you tube before cause he had some other partner's one was from Canada . Wow what at thrill to go through and watch.
Not sure about terrifying, I think that's being kind, but I too have one, bought back then & shelved since. Have just had another little listen and decided there's too much else to give time to.
I listened to the VOA for many years on HF radio. Interesting that you got to go through the records and buy from them. They still have some remote transmitters in parts of the world where they broadcast to places they want to influence (like into North Korea). Once in a blue moon I'll hear them. VOA used to be all over the frequency spectrum on HF, or high frequency, radio. It's really interesting seeing all these records and knowing that the US government, the source of the VOA, bought them or at least got them. And now they're getting a new life. And also I find it interesting they had all these and they didn't really play much music on VOA. Like you mentioned, it was station that really was news and similar types of programming with some music at times. I found it interesting they got all of these records when they're we're not even a radio station that was there to play music like regular AM/FM stations haha. I would have never thought VOA would have that kind of inventory or product. Very cool! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Wow, what a great collection. I love your system to break them down. Question looks like most of the albums had some type of inventory written in magic marker do you recommend removing or leaving?
I’m gonna let the buyer do whatever they want with it. Some are obviously not removable but a lot of the tape is, I think it’s kinda cool to leave since it’s from such a significant collection
How do you know he deserves it? Maybe he’s up to some really heinous shizznay off cam. I’m not saying he is but do you know for sure he isn’t? I’m just sayin lil buddy….
Congratulations! I'm reminded of the late 90's when everyone cleared out their collections. One day in Copenhagen I ran across a huge parts of the national danish radio record vault that was sold of for fixed and low prices. I picked so many goodies that I hardly could carry it back to the boat back to Sweden (this was pre-bridge-era). Many of these were unplayed spare copies from now defunct independent danish labels (like Irmgardz) and UK labels (like Survival). OMG, both fingers and brain hurt after all those digging hours. :D
We had someone locally who died a couple years ago with a huge collection. They were basically stored in two houses. The person who bought the houses also got the albums but didn't know much about them. I was told it was about 500,000 albums. They were blowing out albums for a couple months. I didn't get there until late in the process when they were down to $1 each. Got a few decent things but the good stuff was long gone.
WOW - that is amazing to say the least. You mentioned that a lot of the records had labels or writing on the covers, I certainly saw a lot of that on the video's - will you be able to remove that before selling, and does it devalue the record - or doesnt it matter? Amazing !! Cheers Doug (from Down Under)
Hello, Dillon! WOW!! What an amazing hoard of albums! But… I didn’t see a SINGLE Elvis Presley LP! Maybe those were pulled from the deal by the man who made the deal with you? Great video as always! Walt
