As someone who isn't a furry I can't understand all the hate the internet have against them. Aren't we all animals? To be fair, airblasting with the dragons fury is uncommon and you wouldnt want to risk the cooldown if the sniper didnt fall off and survived

This is an April fools video, but I would love to see UncleDane's experience with other classes. He has a very in-depth analysis to why pybros would be better off bloodthirsty, and his preference of the dragon's fury.
Depends on the map you're playing and how coordinated both teams are.
If the enemy team has better coordination and they actually work together, a Pybro will save a nest (or at least be able to prevent the team from being spammed without issue and stuff Übers so that the team can regroup and push back).
It's a lot of fun when the other team actually starts to try to push together as the Engi and Pyro work together to protect their nest, if people only attack the nest one by one they're easy pickings against a good Engineer unless they can use splash damage from a safe spot.
I have a harder time with light classes with the Fury. And Dane would benefit from using the Annihilator for water.

Idk, I feel like people already knew that the Dragon's Fury was a fun weapon, it's just that you do need to be actually good to get the most out of it, and even then, sometimes the default flamethrower is still better because you don't have to really aim in fights and airblast is real good. People also knew that all the flare guns minus the manmelter were good, it's just a matter of what kind of gamer you are which one you like the most, and obviously the powerjack has been the meta pyro pick for like 7 years in a row or some shit

What you have been doing with pyro is what I have been doing with Spy recently. Playing your least played or worst class and learning how to play him is a ton of fun

I tried that but I suck so back to being a soldier chimp
I tried doing that with some of my least played classes (Heavy, Demoman) but I don't find them fun as much as confusing and frustrating. I don't even play half the cast (I have zero hours on Scout), and for Pyro, Soldier, and Sniper, I only really play very specific loadouts.
I tried with Medic, my least played, and eh. I could play for like ten minutes before deciding to swap to somebody else. Medic’s gameplay just isn’t up my alley.
Love how most people who end up playing Pyro for an extended period of time end up realizing that the sustain damage class is more fun when played with burst damage
Honestly, close-range projectile burst damage as a class is really solid, even if I prefer my major burst damage as a Pyro coming from a broken street sign.

I know I'm a couple months late to this (I was taking a bit of a TF2 break when this came out), but as a self-proclaimed Pyro main, this was such a fresh breath of air. Dane's said a couple of times before that he didn't really care for Pyro which I was fine with, it's alright if people don't share the same opinions all of the time. But actually seeing Dane give Pyro a chance and sticking with them despite previously not really liking them is so unbelievably nice to see. Also, as a little side note, I've noticed that people who don't tend to gel with Pyro typically enjoy the dragon's fury (which, yeah, fair), and the flare gun seems to be the only universally respected Pyro weapon. It's just a bit interesting seeing that.

Consider Dane: Your brain subconsciously predicts when an explosive class is going to throw something at you, so instead of saying "I was just kinda pressing it at random ig" you *did* actually learn how to, most of the time, time your airblasts with the enemies firing. Things like that are more of an instinct than a conscious action
+1, I think it's very likely that he's super familiar with projectile timing due to both playing a lot but specifically also because you deal with projectile classes a lot when playing engy, so it's likely he has some muscle memory from timing a soldier spamming a sentry, for instance.
Yep. When I play Pyro, half my reflects are based on predicting the timing, and the difference between a predictable Soldier and a soldier that knows how to mix up their timings is night and day. The same is true when I play Soldier, there is a huge difference between Pyros who just spam reflect, and can easily be punished for it, and Pyros that can actually predict or react to rockets well.
With hundreds of hours playing both sides of this interaction, I can 100% say that airblasting is one of the most skillful mechanics in TF2.

The reason you press mouse2 when you do when an explosive class appears is because you know that that's when they are going to shoot. I do the same thing. My brain just goes "yeah he's probably gonna go from seeing me to pressing mouse1... about now" and then I right click and it works. Sometimes I mess the timing up. Sometimes I'm wrong. But this doesn't work because it's random, it works because soldiers and demomen are sorta predictable. They see thing, they shoot thing.
Ah, that's my problem. I react to the sound of the launcher firing, which is way too late. I need to start pre-empting I see
@@amiablereaper at midrange you can react to the visual of the rocket (more accurate, recommended) or the sound of the launcher (faster reaction), but at close range, your best bet is to play mind games with the soldier and already be pressing m2 by the time the rocket shows up.

One of the biggest things you missed on was using airblast against the players themselves rather than on projectiles. You can juggle ANY class and keep them from running away while confusing them to the point where they can't get their crosshair on you. It works best in enclosed areas and not outside, and it's definitely something to try out. Get up close to an enemy and airblast the floor.
Exactly, my first instinct when someone gets up in my face is airblast them, most classes are a lot more ineffective if they are further away.

But i end up playing on uncle dane's server so I wind up dying most of the time lol.
This video made me love tf2 that much more. The fact that someone who doesn't like a class because of their play style can like it by switching weapons and making it more personal to them. With other class based shooters I've seen, they keep adding characters instead of weapons, leading to players not playing 70% of the characters because they don't like them and there is no other way to play them. This is no means of saying the others are bad I like those too, but I've noticed I only play a couple because the rest I don't like or I get bored of them because there is only so much you can do with a character with one way of playing besides going for strategies that are different, but not good.

Much respect to TF2 for adding depth to the characters it already has instead of making a bunch of simplistic characters who often feel too similar to each other.
@@QuintessentialWalrus When I first played Overwatch, that was almost immediately a criticism I had - that it has a lot more, shallow characters. Character are rather inflexible, and playing them in other ways isn't just another strategy, it's handicapping yourself. It's clearly what they were going for, but you do lose something when you move toward that more rigid game.
@@strangejune Yeah, I think the core weakness of the Overwatch approach is that you end up having several characters who do the same things, which makes everyone less unique. In TF2, the Sniper has access to half a dozen rifles and bows, but in Overwatch every rifle and every bow belongs to a separate character. The redundancy feels like such a waste of development resources IMO.

2:35 You can see Dane's muscle memory of going for a sentry rocket jump for a split second as he switches to his flare gun (same slot as wrangler) and starts to aim down right before quickly switching back to aiming at the Scout.

I'm surprised you didn't mention detonator jumping because it's really fun and gives a lot of extra mobility to the Pyro. If you like the flare gun definitely try using the detonator for a bit too. It might not do the crazy 90 damage crits but it can still dish out quite a bit of damage and can hit multiple targets if you get good with the timing. It's basically like a balanced version of the scorch shot with more utility. Also the degreaser would definitely be more up your alley if you used it more IMO.
He also forgot LazyPurples Puff and Sting with the Degreaser :(
The same way he enjoyed circuit-jumping into shotgunning with the engineer, I think he’d enjoy detonator-jumping into dragon’s fury with the pyro.
just dont forget that you get the most blast jump by holding down right mouse button before shooting, so the flare detonates inside you giving the most blast

Everyone looking to learn Detonator jumping should be downloading jump_pyrokinesis. The weapon opens up so much more possibilities for the Pyro, such as catching up to escaping Medics, jumping atop a level 3 sentry without an Uber, and the not so useful but dopamine rush fulfilling Axtinguisher-Gardening. It helps immensely if you're familiar with explosive jumping already (specifically Soldier, but I came from Demo).
Been several years since I’ve played this game. Pyro was in my top 3 most played classes. I think I was drawn to him because:
1. My aim was inconsistent at best with hitscan weapons
2. Pyros play style isn’t overly complicated or nuanced like spy for example, so it was rarely an overwhelming or frustrating experience
3. I just found it fun. Pyro is great for tight corridors and inside spaces, which was great because I was never the type to stick to the main paths and open areas.
Makes a lot of sense. Having always been a Pyro main, I definitely have more of a "We take those" attitude towards any successes made from random reflects, environmental kills, and other such opportunistic gameplay. It's not luck, its skill independence.

I think Pyro is really cool just because of the insane diversity of playstyles different players will love. It's so open-ended. Each primary and secondary opens up so much interesting gameplay, so you can really customize the class to a degree I don't feel from the other classes. Pyro really has a subclass for everyone.
Pyro's a very fun class to play, probably my fourth favorite.
very true; I was waiting the whole video for Dane to touch up on the Detonator and its immense added mobility and possibilities, but then I realized that there are so many roles and ways to play for Pyro that it was natural he was gonna tend to a different one from what I'm used to. Definitely the most well-rounded class

When I used to play TF2, I mained pyro and that was the loadout I used. But, sometimes, I rocked a backburner and flanked the entire enemy team. The amount of damage and chaos one can create if you manage to actually get behind them without being seen is soooo satisfying. I might not kill most of them, but that is a sure fire way to get a lot of assists.

Back burner into the medics killing the pockets is as much fun now as it was in 2014 for me you die but the chaos is fun and if your teammates have a brain and utilize the chaos to clean up the rest you are free to laugh all the way from hell to the spawn room

always readily available for positioning and retreating, way faster to use and swap off, doesn't make the loudest noise of all time to the enemy team, great to support frontliners and harass crowds. it obviously won't allow you to get as high or far in one go but it's also a lot less obvious because you're not using it to cross giant sightlines and the height is still good enough to pull a lot of practical flanks

It’ll take some getting used to but if you like the flare gun, you should try the Manmelter. It’s slower than the flare gun, but once you figure out how the fire delete mechanic works, it’s really fun to precisely pop someone from across the map with crits from a pyro that tried to light up your team. Or even non crits can be fun. Takes a lot of play to figure out the arc the laser takes though.
It also pairs very nicely with the Dragon's Fury, since airblasting is so situational on that weapon.
I love seeing that Dane's definition of "Fun Pyro" is the exact loadout I often try to use. Giving my least-played classes another chance has been my whole thing for a while because my simple brain loves seeing that silly little playtime graph be as even as possible and I love knowing the different extents of what each class can do.
Ive always loved pyro because to me his different load outs feel good for filling a verity of roles that your team may be missing both aggressively or defensively

On the topic of Pybro, my preferred pyro melee is the neon annihilator for multiple reasons.
1. It can remove sappers for some reason.
2. It does more player damage than the homewrecker.
3. Airblasting people into water for free crits will always be hilarious.
I like it because it doesn’t force me to babysit engies to get utility out of it, but when I do have to, I’m able to remove sappers and possibly save the match by doing so.
you can also crit spies if you melt their spycicle, that always spooks them
One of these videos for each class would be super fun to watch imo. Just seeing Uncle try out different builds and show us his favourite and most fun way to play everyone. A complete opinion piece but I enjoyed seeing the process and his reasons for the build :D
given your enjoyment of sentry jumping, I'm surprised you didn't talk about the flyro (patent pending) playstyle: backburner, thermal thruster, axtinguisher. When you're in the mood to mess around... can't go wrong with that. Would recommend on a map like Harvest.

Pyro is the best in cleaning the house with a thermal thruster and dragon's breath. I killed a lot of heavies from roofs and defended the point, held players from going outside, while my team captured, it's a magical combination on that map :D Also, db is great in combination with scorch shot on 2fort, because it obliterates everyone on the bridge, especially, scouts

A major issue with the axstinguisher clips is just how you repeatedly go for kills with it even when you shouldnt.
The axe allows for burst damage in closer ranged encounters or against unaware players so you dont have to rely on the flames. Outside of much closer ranged encounters though youre better off using the flamethrower at a distance.
i cant believe uncle dane would do this to us. i actually used to look up to him and its so saddening to see him go down this route.

hey, I main pyro! I’m glad you actually gave the class a shot and had fun with it. I personally despise w+m1, I use the degrease+panic attack (and I get called stupid a lot because of it) though the dragons fury is one of my personal favorites. Happy April Fools!
I personally like w+m1 because if you're doing it effectively you have to fine ways to get in and out of dangerous situations while building up damage. Kinda how I like heavy using game sense and map advantage to boost your skill in something people might think is dumb, but actually has more depth when you stick to it.

I came back to this channel (and TF2) after months and months and this is the first video I see. The overwhelming weight of this dark world is truly taking a toll on Dane.
From my view on it, the dragon's fury being bad at airblasting is a big part of its kit, it is just honestly better than most of the flamethrowers at actually killing people in just about any situation, so it trades some of its utility (airblast) in exchange for that offensive power. I personally typically use the normal flamethrower since it's the best at airblasting and I like playing a more defensive style. Honestly thank you for this wonderful video my dude and I hope your day goes wonderfully, it was nice seeing a pretty good look over on pyro and I'm glad you got past your initial perception of it being the W+M1 class
This is really cool, I'm a pyro main who basically uses the same loadout but switched with the degreaser, I like to think of the flames from the degreaser as a debuff to apply to the enemy before switching to my flare gun (or sometimes axtingusher when I'm using it) to do the real damage even when at close range, the switch speed is something that just adds to the skill ceiling for that kind of play and I find it super rewarding.
That's the point of combo Pyro. The degreaser is a weapon to prime enemies or reflect projectiles (or Spycheck). You can W + M1 with it, but you'll have to be smarter about doing it.
The very little time it does save you can matter a lot in a deathmatch situation, which also matters for shotguns.
Exactly. Nothing beats the *crunch* of a 90 damage flare against enemy pyros. Nothing.

Yeah, something that’s always bugged me with Pyro is that every flamethrower that isn’t the stock punishes air blasting. I would’ve hoped one of them would be designed to encourage it further.
I believe degreaser used to be the best one, because it had better switch speed and no airblast penalty (I think it used to be a flat dmg penalty instead). That's what I used to equip when I played "support" pyro.
@@Mick0Mania Agreed. And now it takes an extra five fuel over stock, which isn't terribly punishing, but its still a nerf.
@@Mick0Mania airblast now only costs 10 ammo on the "yeet funger" but ammo taken up by normal dmg is 3 ammo a second used

I think that rare feeling of "Oh wow I deleted that man." with a airblast that is 'random' is what gets people to learn the mechanic more. I could say the same think about just vomiting rockets as soldier, but hitting direct hits gave me the feeling that made me fall in love with the rocket launcher.

I never use the degreaser either. But the philosophy is pretty easy to understand. The degreaser makes your secondary your primary. You become a flare/shotgun pyro with a flamethrower in quick swap reserve when things get all up in your grill.

For the airblast, I find it very funny for deadly areas like cliffs or spots in the map that lead to the void because i could just airblast an entire team off a map to troll them and sometimes get vote kicked by players out of frustration.
To be honest, after watching your channel it gave me a lot more confidence in Engi, after practice and learning about how good battle Engi can be with the widowmaker it gave me a whole new perspective on Engi as a whole
As a spy main this is exactly what happened to me. I never thought I could enjoy pyro but then I found out about det jumping into an axetinguisher combo and it kinda just made it so much more fun (Instead of having to reflect someones projectile I could just jump on my own now!)
Finally somebody acknowledges how good the Dragon's Fury is and all the positive aspects of it, imo it is the most underrated pyro primary and always love seeing people giving it the love it deserves.
Honestly, as someone who plays Pyro all the time, I think I’d love it if I wasn’t someone who has the mission of making Spy’s miserable when they come anywhere near me. That lack of afterburn hurts bad

just out of curiosity, did you ever try the detonator? Its really good for upping your mobility and lets you do some silly things sometimes, which is fun.
Given what he says at around 9:21 he probably didn't get that much out of its mobility options. Uncle Dane is not really a Jumper main.

Dragon’s Fury works by having a constant nerf, that you have to hit targets to remove.
For buildings, it never applies the nerf, such that it appears as if it is getting what would normally be a buff.
It is always a good idea to vary your class play time. I usually rotate between pyro, heavy, engie, or piss sniper.

the dragon's fury is hands down one of the best pyro weapon they've added thus far. it's so incredibly fun
I always have the homewrecker equipped not because I babysit my engis (go team!), but because degreaser + flare gun is really good so I barely use the melee slot anyway. Flare gun works just fine as a pseudo-melee weapon, and like the Uncle said, degreaser does eat ammo, so I end up falling back to my engis' nests a lot. And I figure if I'm there I might as well take out a sapper or two. Also getting homewrecker kills is hilarious.
Pyro is a team player, the Degreaser's main weakness disappears almost entirely if you're protecting your Engies.
Also comboing enemies outside of the sentry's range is pretty strong if you can single them out.
it's always neat to get a reality check for the class you main. i play a decent bit of everything, but i definitely trend towards pyro the most. i do really like the class - projectile reflection is one of my favorite mechanics in any game, and i try to go out of my way to replicate it in the other games i play, where possible.
but also, yeah, you make a fine point about close-up reflects. i try not to think of it as gambling so much as prediction, but those two really aren't far off from each other. i still tend to enjoy when i do get them - perhaps the dopamine receptors are not as worn out at 2000 hours as they get at 10,000 - but i can see how really wanting to earn your damage is a valid concern.

I’m just now being recommended this as I’ve been starting to play TF2 again after a few years off. I tried out heavy again as of late and I’ve gotta say, I’m super enjoying him. I’m also somehow amazing playing him while pubstomping. I’m averaging 90 points a match!

13:50 actually the reason it does 75 to buildings is because that's the dragon's fury's base damage. For some reason, its base damage is reduced on non burning enemies not the other way around

This was me tackling medic (for one day). Medic is my least played class, but when you do play him, it's nice to be able to glue yourself to the backside of the top fragger and piggyback to the MVP spot. As a Huntsman fan, the crossbow is also very satisfying to use.
I mostly use the Huntsman but it's so much harder to hit than the crossbow. I'm a huge crossbow user when I play Medic, but when I'm playing Huntsman I'm kind of lost on how to actually use it, I find the most success basically front lining like a diet power class and I don't think that's quite right...
In my experience, all flamethrowers penetrate multiple targets, but due to how they work the closest target takes more damage. Still, yeah, plenty of times using a dispenser as cover to burn the engi and sentry.
Personally fond of the Backburner/Detonator/Backscratcher roaming sPyro.

I love the support capabilities that the Pyro has. I like extinguishing my teammates, I like spychecking, and I love the homewrecker. I love being able to remove sappers after the engineer is already dead, and removing them in one swing is super satisfying.
