There are a whole bunch of non-Black and/or non-women folk coming here to negate my experience because they had a great time in Buenos Aires. What you're really doing is proving my point not invalidating it. As a Black woman, I was treated poorly. You living in a different body, were treated well. That doesn't prove that racism doesn't exist, it bolsters my claims that race was at the core of the treatment I received. If you clearly don't understand the insidious nature of racism, denying it's existence just makes you look...racist (and dumb).

Argentina just (About three years ago) started acknowledging that there is an Afro-argentinian population with a census designation. They have always pushed the total European myth. Even here in the United States, Latinamerican immigrants push the non-racial Latin America lie.
Racism in Argentina is against people with indigenous traits, not against people with African traits, the racism of Argentina, and Latin America in general, is a mix between classism and racism, it is very different from the racism of Europe and USA. Argentines have nothing against black people because they know nothing about black people, it is a country where practicing black people do not exist and therefore they have never created positive or negative prejudices against them. What happens is that Americans believe that they are the center of the world, and in this case, they analyze the racism of other countries thinking that the racism of all the countries in the world is the same as the racism of the United States.

I had Ubers cancel on me too in BA but I was told it was because I was not paying cash. Once I switched my Uber to paying cash, I did not have that problem anymore.
Yes, that's the point. If you pay with a credit card or debit card, the driver gets paid with a lag of 30 or 60 days, so they lose because of inflation, and also if you paid in US dollars, the government steals the gap between official and unofficial rate. That's not racism, that is people trying to protect their money from a crashed economy and a corrupt government.

Her experiences were unfortunate, but if you read the comments, most residents and Argentines are saying this is something that could have easily happened to any of us. I'm sure your partner can conffirn. Do get ready to be talked to and asked about your country, being insisted on trying some mate even if you hate it and people touching you a lot, we tend to deliver hugs to people we barely know, kiss everyone and are extremilly touchy without realizing that is not so common in most countries. But I'm sure you had already noticed. Other than that, getting skin care and hair products might be difficult to find, especially outside of the capital (but I'm just gessing). Long story short, we don't care about race, we are too busy complaining about the economy and judging each other based on our political views and prefered football team.
My father told me that Argentina is the most racist place he had ever visited in his 80something year life. My father traveled the globe as a businessman from Africa. He was humiliated over and over again, he said they wouldn’t even honor the hotel reservations that he had paid for in advance via his travel agent. Don’t sugar coat, it is what it is. They are beyond racist! Period.

I just got back to Canada from Barcelona where I was very obviously a tourist. I’ve never experienced that intense energy before. It was clear distain and contempt or sometimes I was just treated as completely invisible. The restaurant service and sidewalks were the same for me as you describe. I wasn’t sure if it was a difference in cultural standards or just them hating tourists/Americans. Crazy experience but I guess that’s part of the adventure of travel. I wouldn’t go back there either. ❤️
We went to Brussels (All Blacks except one of our sound guys from Church Arnold a White Romanian-). We had gone on a church plant mission from England. Our pastor had been there before. It was a group of seven and we ordered food costing over 200 euros. The bread rolls we had were called and the food sub-standard. Normally in England if a particular dish isn't up to standard, you can have the restaurant cook the same thing again. Not so in Brussels. Over there, if you ain't happy you can leave but you still have to pay for the sub standard meal. The whole thing was bizarre and not a great advert for Belgium. At least you yourself are white so am not sure what the crack was there but definitely that restaurant for me was a shocker

I am sorry you felt that way. While I respect your views, I must say that I disagree that Buenos Aires is a racist city. There are racists of course but as a black person living here for over 8 years, I can say they are welcoming people. I've had strangers defended me against their own many times or even offer help. Many times I even treated better than Argentines. I also know many black persons here and the incidents of discrimination are rare. Again, I'm sorry you had that experience but I would definitely recommend Buenos Aires to Black people. That is why I started sharing on youtube about the culture. A few bad experiences in a week can turn you off but living in the country helps you to really understand the culture. I agree with the dog poop, it's nasty. My first time in Buenas Aires a decade ago was a dream!!! The dollar was super strong, the service was amazing and the food was delicious. What happened?!? When Shida and I went into the restaurant only to never be served once we were seated… I was like wait…people don’t want these good coins?!? Ugh! It's very common in Buenos Aires not to be served in a restaurant. More if you go to a touristy place at rush hour. As an Argentine I have experienced that my whole life. I'm not saying my country is not racist, which is, but if you are American the experience of going to a shop or to a restaurant is very different to that of the States because employees are not trained to be nice and condescending to customers.

Thats something cultural. There is no one at the entrance (like other countries i visited), when you sit down you only need to make a signal and the waiter will come. Then the workers of the establishment they will not molest you (interrupt you while you are eating or talking), when you finished, they still will not approach you until you wish to leave that place and at this moment they would give you the bill. I as an argentinian i feel that in some foreign food places the people were to pushy and I feel a little upset that the waitress gave me the bill one minute after i finished when i still i was having a good time with my partner. There are different codes.
There seems to be a pattern here in the comments. Argentinians are basically saying, this happens to us, too, so how can this be racism? On the other hand, you and other people from the US who are also black are saying, trust us, this is racism. No one is disagreeing with you that your experiences were bad. But, to strongly imply it ´s racism, based on a short stay is unfair. Also, I have lived here for 12 years, am most definitely not white, but have never experienced racism. I ´ve had unpleasant experiences here and there, but racism had nothing to do with it. Also, my Argentinian husband has also experienced all those bad experiences that you did as well, not because of racism. Argentinians can be that way with each other. And they treated you no differently. Customer service, in general, is not that great here, especially in restaurants. And that guy on the street who didn ´t move out of his way for you, that happens to my husband and everyone here time and again. The thing to do for people like that is to simply tap them on the shoulder and say, permiso. They will move every time. The taxis, someone else already explained. They will often not turn off their lights when answering another call. And Ubers, if you are paying with credit, or someone else orders an Uber and is going further and will therefor pay more, they will go with the higher paying customer every time. Same for hotels, even on Airbnb. Hotels and home or apartment owners might cancel reservations here because they know they can charge more to a newer guest. No one is denying nor discounting your bad experiences. Especially for those of us who live here, we know how annoying it can be here sometimes. But, as an American, I feel we have been conditioned to automatically see racism everywhere, even when there is no call to. And this idea, is it racism or is it…is very American. Black and other non white friends from other countries, or even the US, have told me that they have not experienced racism here, either. Nor did I see it when I was with them. Again, I am not discounting nor denying your bad experiences. Nor even denying that racism might exist here as well. Just pointing out that to paint an entire country, an entire people a certain negative way based on a short trip is unfair.

I don´t wanna negate your experience but after listening to you I have the impression that your bad time here had more to do with being a privileged american that being a black person. Some of the things you mention (dog poop, bad service, taxis that don´t stop) are at this point "First World problems" for us. I am Argentine. Everything negative that you pointed out is real, I have experienced it in Buenos Aires. People don't pick up dog poop, behavior on the street is rude, service in many places is very bad, getting a taxi is very difficult. I don't think it's discrimination, it's just disastrous quality of service. To have a good experience it is necessary to know the recommended places and only visit the tourist area.a.
This is so interesting to me! I had a very similar experience in Santiago,Chile. After being there for 4 months I knew I would never go back. I was the only black woman within my study abroad program (which is fine). However I remember being told by the wife of my host family that I was not allowed to travel with them to certain places because I was too dark. It was an experience amongst many that I will never forget!!! After that moment I started asking questions about their history and doing my own research. It blows my mind that most Chileans believe they are white🤦🏽♀️. Lord have mercy. Anyway, I’m glad you shared your story! It’s important.

madrid, Spain. i was physically and verbally assaulted by men multiple times because they assume all black women are prostitutes. Otherwise i was treated well for 3 months, (no issues w taxis or service) but i will not be going back. and not that it matters but i was working there at US embassy so i was always dressed professionally during these encounters. Australia. Racists everywhere. Don't serve you in restaurants, refuse help in stores, give you other hotel rooms then the ones you booked (like the bad ones/noisy ones) & paid exuberant prices for, cause everything in Australia is hella expensive. Follow you in supermarkets. And on top of that are very much so, brash about it to your face. Horrible experience, was happy to after 3weeks that my time there was done.
That thing with the money is insane. I recently visited Belize and it was very convenient to use the US dollar. The exchange was stable at a 2 to 1 rate everywhere so I didn't have to do mental gymnastics no matter how I paid.

Wow! I studied abroad in Argentina in 2016 and it was 26 pesos to the dollar I believe back then. I cant believe how much the value of the peso has dropped in that time. I only drove in an uber once back then because there was this big push back from the taxi’s and uber drivers were being harassed so im assuming that has changed with time. I actually had one good experience with a taxi driver, left my phone in the car and she brought it back to me the next day to university 😅. Super lucky, her son and I are still friends on facebook to this day. used to see people get picked pocketed and robbed a lot, so im assuming with the economy it is even worse now. I feel you on the dog pop 😂. My roommate was Argentine but she wasn't from Buenos Aires and we use to say all the time the city is crazy, I have stories for days. Mendoza and Córdoba are so much more chill

You should go and visit yourself. There is a popular AA blogger who hated Portugal - said she was mistaken for a hooker and all sort of things. We visited the year before the pandemic and had the best time - so much so we’re thinking of buying a place there.

Buenos Aires has been on my travel list for a while but now 🥴🥴 I had a similar experience with wondering if I was experiencing racism, during my short and unpleasant stay in Poland. I had no issues in Krzyżowa, a beautiful small village. But when I got to Wrocław… I honestly said I’m NEVER coming back to Poland. Myself and my friend (who is also black) were on a Europe tour with other students while in college. We were the only two black people on that trip. We were walking around the Wrocław downtown square and kept getting stared at. At first we didn’t care because it’s (central) Europe, we don’t expect there to be a lot of black people. Then the stares became uncomfortable and as we stood talking to each other a tall man in a black leather jacket (not a skinhead at first glance but who knows) walked from the other side of the square with this angry look on his face, stood right in front of us and shouted something at us in Polish. We didn’t know what he said so we just assumed either he was crazy or a racist. No one did or said anything to help or explain to us what he said so we just walked away. Then we went to a fast food restaurant to get something to eat and we stood in line for an unusually long time. The server/cashier even started attending to customers behind us. We were so confused. It wasn’t until I assertively said, “Excuse me, can we please order? We’ve been standing her for a while”. The server pretty much rolled her eyes and reluctantly attended to us. The whole thing was bizarre and uncomfortable to say the least for only myself and my friend. While everyone else went out that night she and I stayed in our hotel room because we didn’t feel welcome in that city. Because we couldn’t speak or understand Polish, we weren’t sure what was being said but the vibes (if I can put it that way) were way off. I told myself I wouldn’t come back to Poland which is a shame because I have met lovely Polish people outside of Poland. 🤷🏽♀️ I also don’t want to make a judgement about a whole country based on my experience in one city but it’s hard not to lol

I went to BsAs in 2010 and I can attest that even back then, there was so much dog poop EVERYWHERE. One of my friends even slipped and fell on some. I went with a couple of friends: a Chinese-American, a Mexican American, and a Jewish friend-I'm a black male. Maybe I was insulated from any racism? I did go out on the town by myself one night, and everyone kept asking if I was from Brazil. I also noticed I was the ONLY black person everywhere I went. One bar did deny me entry but my Spanish is non-existent so I couldn't understand the reason why. I actually did make a friend there from a pub crawl I went to and we are friends to this day; I even visited him since he moved to Berlin. He said that there is not much interaction with blacks in Argentina-that Argentines are very snooty and think they are the "creme de la creme" of South America. They consider Brazil as totally underclass, and that extends to how they feel about black folks as well. There is very little black immigration into Argentina from Brazil. Like I said, I didn't really have any "bad" experiences when I went out solo, maybe a lot of people being indifferent to my presence. I felt the same way when I went to Prague. Because I wasn't engaged by people in both of those places like I have been virtually everywhere else, I also wouldn't recommend BsAs OR Prague.

@@synolve Yep! And because the economy has been going south for years, a lot of the city is in decay-the infrascruture was not kept up in most places. Lots of cracked and uneven sidewalks. That are covered in poo. I'm really surprised we all didn't fall at some point.
I love Mexico City. I love Zacatecas even more. I just got back from Guatemala and El Salvador. If you get the chance, Metapan in El Salvador is a lovely city. It totally surprised me.
I'm from Buenos Aires (the province not the city), and yeah people from the city are rude to the point that parisians seemed nice to me. That thing where they don't move drives me insane, is so common. The taxi thing, taxi drivers are shady af, I wouldn't put racism past them. What you gather about the economy is 1000% correct. We have more than 6 different exchange rates, and it's a nightmare for turists and exports. Our peso loses value every single day, the inflation rate is of 5% monthly so every time we go buy something it's more expensive, and there are no jobs, so yeah there isn't much hope for the peso. I hope you had a good time in Antartica and perhaps consider visiting other parts of our country that reflect better on us (if you haven't already).

Guys, Ubers always cancel in South America. Taxi’s always stopped for me but sometimes refused to go to the international airport during rush hour. I’m a 6’9” black ex 🏈 player. All these problems I can’t say that I ever encountered and I’ve stayed there for 3 months in 2022. Same in 2019. The economy is very destabilized. People lack hope. As a person that lives in Rio de Janeiro, I’ve seen a difference in the culture of the Carioca between 2010 and 2022. Many things to consider and learn about a culture when you’re an “outsider”. It's mind-blowing. In US even the word black is considered racist. When we really love someone in Argentina we call them negro or negrito. I'm called like that by my closest friends even if I'm Caucasian. But I understand your reasons and I'm sad for you, I'd probably feel and think like you if I'd be black American, you have racerelated post traumatic stress. Like ex soldiers that have panic attack with fireworks. You're confusing real munition with fireworks.
I had the taxi experience in Barcelona, I had to go into a hotel and asked the bell boy to get me a cab, because I could not get an empty one to stop...I did not have that experience in Madrid....It sounds like racism to me
Wow… that’s too bad! My husband and I went to Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Iguazu Falls and it was fantastic. I didn’t find anymore dog poop than in Paris - but they do have a lot of stray dogs, so it may not necessarily dog owners. Did you not notice the dog poop the first time? Not sure why you would return if this is a problem. It’s also a country not used to mass tourism. IDK… didn’t have a problem.

Ugh. Sorry you had that experience. Not going there. I’ve been in Playa Del Carmen for a month, staying in an AirBB in Palmas Turquesa. I walk to the market and laundry weekly. The dog poop in this area is terrible, it’s hard to catch a taxi (they ride by empty) , and the WOMEN are rude. One of them actually went out of her way to bumped my 11 year old daughter on purpose. So much room and you saw her! I can’t get arrested in Mexico… so, I’m going to Mexico City next week. If I ever come back, I will stay in Centro.
If you see any posters up for Solemans DJ events in PDC you should go before you leave. I had so much fun when I was there and met a lot of expats at his event. I don’t remember the name of the Restraunt bar it was at on the main strip. But there were a lot of black people there having fun who live in PDC and Suleman is such a sweet soul who will welcome you.
Merida is also another great option for Mexico. I just left, but it was a really great experience. The people are friendly, there's a decent-sized black community that meets up weekly. I never felt unsafe. I'm planning on going back toward the end of summer
@@misterniceguy67 I picked an airbnb that was in north Mérida. It ended up being about 20 minutes from Progresso Beach and 30 minutes from Centro. Ubers/DiDis were really cheap so it was still pretty convenient. If you plan to stay a bit I would say pick an airbnb and scout the area. The best prices aren't online, you find them walking around the city.

All those things are so true! I suppose my experience was overshadowed by the fact that I dance and had a sort of built in community. I met people every time I went out and they invited me to their homes etc. I also stayed long term in a guest house where the owner/lady and her family were always looking out for me. I went out with her sometimes and even went partying with her sons! In a way I was almost always with locals and whenever I needed a taxi I asked someone in the restaurant or even a stranger on the street to help me call a cab. Every time I went somewhere I told them upfront I would be using pesos so there was no confusion. Sorry you had a bad experience and It does seem like things have very much declined in that country.

I’m from the states and have been living here from April 2019 to present. You are correct there is so much dog poop everywhere! It’s really sad that not everyone picks up their dogs poop! The ppl are rude and will not move out of the way. This happens in the small grocery stores all the time and other places. Many ppl have been rude to me in the past three years. Most of the time if I’m speaking English to my children some people will be even more rude too us! On the other hand I have met some very nice people as well. Yes, the inflation is really bad here at the moment. When we arrived her in 2019 you could get 45 pesos for every dollar now it’s 222 pesos to the dollars. If your able to have dollars and exchange to pesos you definitely have buying power! Keep in mind there is good and bad in ever country. We have never had problems with Uber coming to pick us up. Actually the experience for transportation has always been pretty good.
I was born in Buenos Aires, is the worst part of Argentina, unfortunately is the only city foreigners ear about overseas but Argentina is a really large country with a lot of beautiful other places to know. As an aborigin descendant I must say you can feel the racism, not directly but in the way most argentinians perceive themselves as europeans, they not even consider themselves latinamerican. I know there was a lot of eurpean immigration centuries ago but they systematically denies the other ethnicities that are part of Argentina too.

I befriended a girl from Africa when I was there. We were both young ladies. She is graduating from the university and asked if I would come to her graduation. I told her virtually, in spirit, congratulation to her via the wind to carry, but, by TMH, I will never step foot, toe, finger nail, breath, ear lobe (U get my point) into that horrible country again!

well, I didn't think the dog poop in Cannes was egregious. Maybe because I was in Nice prior, and went to Marseille afterwards. Take all the dog poop of Nice and Cannes, then add bird poop on literally everything, maniac drivers, hundreds of unemployed young men staking out tourist sites and stations, coupled in with worn-rundown buildings and voila! Marseille, France. Viva la France 🇨🇵 I talk smack because it was not a beautiful city in the slightest, but the people were some of the most hospitable I've ever met anywhere, second only to those of Helsinki, which is also not a nice looking city, for the most part. The hospitality of the people make up for it. People in Cannes are very respectful by the way, and the people in Nice are helpful for the most part. Southern France is the exact opposite of what you will experience with other French people outside of France. No one knows exactly why.

Shida, THANK YOU for sharing your experience!!! Like you, I've traveled a lot over 30+ years, and avoiding...confronting...and reporting racism has always been something I've had to do. This is exactly why there are certain parts of the Planet which I have NO desire to see, let alone give that population any of my hard earned dollars. Argentina is one of those countries. There are too many stories that have been shared by other Diasporans about horrible treatment they've experienced there. Why would Black & Brown want to pay to experience marginalization and exclusion, when we can stay in the US and get it for free????!!! To the contrary, Mexico is one of my FAVORITE places to visit, and I've been to a number of different cities over the years. I've ALWAYS felt welcome as an African American male, especially since Spanish is my second language. I've made friendships with locals that I've maintained over the years. They honestly seem to like, not simply tolerate, Black & Brown people. Places like this will always get my return business, as well as praise (Side note: I received this positive reception in the 3 Middle Eastern countries I've visited as well, and would recommend them to any Black & Brown travelers: Oman, Qatar, and Dubai.) Very good article. The Paraguayan war was a disaster. Especially for the Guarani people. Never heard that someone in Argentina identifies as white. If it is common to be Tano (Italian) Gallego (from Spain) Russian (the Jewish people) Negro (the mixed race that have some color left) Chinese (any Asian with Chinese origin, Korea or Japan).In reality, most of us Argentines are criollos, a mixture of Native Americnas with European migrations. What I don't understand is how if the Argentines are so racist, the descendants of Africans were mixing so much.

I went to South America in 2019. 5 countries, 7 cities in 10 days. I was looking forward to going to Buenos Aires because of the cycling culture but the people in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, Uruguay WERE rude and it is always a question of “is this racism or is this person rude?” Nope.

Exactly, I have heard from Mexicans (nice people) that after living in Buenos Aires, when they return to Mexico, their acquaintances see them as more aggressive but they only say "now I am more direct and I don't have to lower my head." Me and my wife (both black) shared a table in the Moulin Rouge in Paris with an Argentinian couple. A man from Argentina asked us to take his picture at Versailles. They spoke English and were very friendly and inquisitive. Thanks for the heads up. We are retirees and have no time for racist countries.
Hi Shida. It's great to travel freely as Black women but it's important to understand history. Confederate generals and soldiers moved their families to South America after the American civil war, and 100 years later Nazi Germans were on code and moved there too, knowing the stage had been set. Central America, especially Costa Rica fought back against a white supremacy movement called "the Golden Circle" and rejected the racist roaches who scurried further south. They're now generations deep as cultural influencers. It shouldn't deter black women from traveling but history is more present than we often think. Stay safe and continue to enjoy life in spite of them!
Thank you for explaining about confederate going to south America. I didn't know. Argentinians don't consider themselves South Americans, but more like white Europeans in Argentina. Brazil also tend to separate the dark skin from their small circle of European descendants. ( I have friends in both countries, but it's true. ).

They are mostly white Europeans, though there are a lot of Italian descent with darker hair, eyes, and skin that would be considered ethnic white in the U.S., instead of just white. I think the lack of racial diversity, in addition to the racist immigrants from Nazi Germany, have contributed to the current culture.
Argentinians are basically italians and Italians are notoriously racist horrible people. Somalia and Ethiopia are great places to visit. Very friendly countries and people.

I remember the president of Argentina visited Mexico at one point and said Mexico was filled with “Indios” and offensive term referring to Native Americans. 8:10 probably you should know most taxis here worlk by being calling them trough apps. If they are on route to an app call they still show the free light but they don't stop if try to stop them on the street. Sometimes they signal you "no" with their hand and you know they are alrrady on route to client. Normally they only ignores you.
I am from Buenos Aires, I live in BA, I am sorry for your experiences, I have to say that I have many friends, from different countries and races, including black people, who told a different story, totally opposite to yours about the people's behaviour. Dog poop is real, but people have improved a lot and it depends on the neighborhood. I also agree with the exchange issue and the economy. As a big city, it has the usual common problems. And you can find a diversity of situations, good or not so good, but it cannot be something to decide not to visit. Anyway, you are welcome again if you want to repeat, and I even offer you my home to stay. Buenos Aires is well worth visiting because of much more positive things than negative. Hugs.

I appreciate your view on Buenos Aires, as I'm going there in a few months. I'm a black man so maybe I will experience some of the same as you did. But that being said I'm currently in South America, and I have been in SA for 8 months now. And some of the things you mentioned are similar in the two countries that I have been. That also being said I know Argentina is different than other SA countries (especially the north where I'm currently at the moment) But I have some Argentine friends, and I speak almost fluent Spanish so maybe those two things will make a difference in my experience. I'm also planning to stay longer than two weeks actually a few months so maybe I will have a totally different viewpoint ( for better or worse) But I really do appreciate this video, because I will at least have some things to look for, and will be better prepared before my trip there.

I was really psyched about traveling to Buenos Aires to see if this is a place I could relocate to. I am a native New Yorker and I want a costal cosmopolitan city. I know I would love Mexico City, however, It is not close enough to the shore. I appreciate you sharing all of your experiences traveling all over the world. I know BA has experienced a lot of immigration from other South and Latin American countries like Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic and Haiti. And there are Black Argentinians, although I know the population is small and I do know the history. Just wondering if this is the difference....It's not a big deal scratching it off my list...the crime rate also seemed kind of high and there are plenty of other safer options . Again, thank you. Thank you for this. And wow. I was thinking of taking my adult daughter to BA for Spanish classes. It would be part of a larger plan to explore neighboring Uruguay as a possible place to move to (had a great time there and in BA in the early 90s). But I’ve wondered about the racism in those two countries (my husband is Black). Your video answered some of my questions. I think we will pass on BA at least. Bullet dodged!
During ww2 the president of Argentina made a comment that sympathized with Nazis. Germany were welcomed to Argentina after that comment. Germany promised economic deals after the war. Many Germany escaped to South America. If you look at the history they eventually kicked out people of African decent out or Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Couple that with what someone mentioned about the idealism of superiority of Argentinians I would feel uncomfortable visiting there for long.
Peron is the president you mention, Evita's husband. He was friends with Franco (Spanish dictator, Hitler's friend) and yes Nazi simpatizer. Also, a pedophil, he had a romantic relationship with a 14 year old. But the Afroargentinians were not kicked out, they were killed. When the Independance war broke most of the black enslaved men were offered comissions to fight in the war. They were foot soldiers and sent to the front lines, most were killed there. In all the following wars with Spain, Brazil, and Paraguay similar strategies were used, literally decimating the population. Another problem was the yellow fever epidemics, that killed black people disproportionately.

I live close to Spain ( living now in Portugal) but I won't be going there... when I was last there I was treated fine. But I've heard that Black people these day are not treated very nicely there About 2 year ago I had a 3 hour lay-over there traveling from Morocco and the ticket agents were grouchy and rude to me when I tried to get help on which gate to go to. Top of the list for maybe you may not want to go to if you're Black is CHINA!

I stayed in Buenos Aires city for almost 6 months last year. Yes there's a lot of dog poop, yes customer service is slow and can at times be very frustrating. Yes the taxi drivers and most people don't speak English. and yes the economy isn't at its best but if you are earning in dollars or Euros the country can be very cheap for a tourist to visit. It is difficult however to get money in the country if you haven't brought enough cash with you to exchange in the blue rate market, but there is always Wester Union (exchange rate is blue rate) if you are patient enough to do so. With that being said, I still highly enjoyed my experience in the city and met many locals who were kind. I am a Filipino and have definitely experienced racism in other countries around the world but I still try to see the beauty in all the places I am lucky enough to travel to.
I am in Buenos Aires right now and I spent close to 5 weeks in Uruguay . I won't comment on Shida's experience because it is hers ( person, time, manners, language,etc.) and hers only. I am a Black North American , 50 year old plus and a male. In the Retiro neighbourhood, about the Cancilleria, I have never seen dog poop but 2 or more blocks away, I can smell urine on the sidewalks or see 1 or 2 people literally sleeping on the sidewalk, sometimes on a cheap foam mattress. Getting a taxi in Buenos Aires can be hard at certain times ( office closing time) but at least 3 times, as a senior Black man I was able to get a taxi by hailing who not only drove me but was willing to wait for me for short errands and even without my asking offered to pick me up later and dropped me their name and telephone number for future errands. As to people on the sidewalk blocking my way , I would forcefully and willingly walk INTO their path, so they would have to part away or we would lock into our steps. Microagressions or microracism acts are worldwide ; my take on this : fight back , don't run away. Jewish people suffered at the hands of Nazi Germany but STILL visit Germany and live there. Generally, Uruguayans think they are a cut above the Argentinians.
Hello, Argentinian here. Thanks for the video, being so polite about the bad experiences and not rushing to call us racists as I´ve seen in other occasions. Reason 1: This is an issue, it used to be much worse and there are lots of neighborhoods that nowadays have none of that thanks to public dispensers of plastic bags to pick them up and fines against people who do this. I dont know which neighborhood you attended, but I agree that its disgusting, and I think your reading about people not caring for their neighbours is sort of true. I could elaborate more on the last if you like. Reason 2: The rudeness of people may be due to a cultural shock, we have a really weird way of interacting with each other and to the untrained eye it can all look very rude, agressive, etc. For example, in my group of life-long friends, we never call each other by our names, here are some nicknames we have for each other: "el gordo, el papu, la gordita, el negro, el chichi, el mudo, el chino" Translation (roguh) : " Fatty, dad, the little fat(woman), the black, the chichi, the mute, the chinese" . None of these are understood as an insult, its even more endearing to call someone by their nickname rather than their actual name. The rudeness of some people on the street, like the people that would not move or block the way doesnt sound like something out of the ordinary but its not unpolite if they didnt see you in my opinion. On the other hand, the guy that blocked your way was an idiot. Reason 3: It has happened to me that 4 taxis went past me (im white as can be, all my family is all italian), this is because sometimes taxis are called to go to a certain location and they dont turn off their marker. It's dumb, yes, but that may be your case + bad luck. Just one month ago I sat at a bar for almost 30 minutes without anyone coming to take my order, when I realized that I had to go to the "barra" and ask it for myself there, xd. I understand that being from up there you ask yourself the question about racism and I dont blame you for it, there are some truly racist people here, but Its safe to say that its a minority. I suspect there are concentrations of these racist people from german colonies mostly from the nazis that came here in the second world war. Racism is shunned here, there are a lot of "mestizos" because we are really mixed, but this idea of argentinians being racists or white may come from 2 sources: - "The porteños" Is a term for the people of the capital city, sadly the cliche for these people is that they feel better than the rest and say that Argentina is european. This can be mistaken for racism but its not, its just a form of nationalism that turns out disgusting for everyone. I have met people like this, but Its safe to say that its not all people from buenos aires, every place has their brand of dumbasses. - Cultural shock. The argentinian way of socializing is crazy in a way, its hard for a foreigner to understand us in my opinion. The Argentinian is very invasive of personal space generally, not caring to offend, daring to do big leaps of trust between people, and people generally dont take the other too seriously (which is why sometimes people can feel rude and sometimes this can be expressed in the wrong ways, such as not caring about their neighbours). But, as I have experienced bad things, I have also experienced beautiful acts of kindness all over the city. Like shop keepers from my neighborhood learning my name and asking me how I have been doing or trusting me with money, people helping me off the ground after dislocating my knee, etc etc. It's like all places, we cant form our entire view from a small sample. For some perspective about how the average argentinian is, take as an example the crazyness around football (Soccer, for those that don´t understand anything about the sport ;) ) , No other country has that type of behaviour around a sport, and its more than a sport really, we project everything culture-related to it. Reason4: True. Nothing to add. God have mercy on us.
Thank you for being so honest. Vacations are costly in terms of time and money. It would really be disappointing for me to spend all that money and time to visit a city where I may not feel welcome. Perhaps when I am retired I can take a chance but not now. Thanks!

Argentina has 23 provinces (states). Buenos Aires is just one city in Argentina. It’s like saying don’t go to America because people in NYC are rude. I honestly been all over Argentina and had a great time. People like to say Argentina is a racist county but they have always opened their borders to everyone. Don’t make your decision based on persons experience. Go visit Argentina from North to South and then make your decision. I will put money that you will have good things to say.

@@Maremare680 Service, it wasn't just poor, it was consistently with an attitude. I was a solo traveler and many (not all) places were very obvious and blunt about not caring for my business. Also at night many people crossed the street as I came down the sidewalk (barely 5'5).

You should go have fun with your co-workers and ignore the rude people. It’s not the same having friends there as it would be wondering around solo as a tourist. That’s the best way to experience a country is with friends that are from there. Unless it’s going to be your only vacation for years to come and you have somewhere “better” you’d rather go.

hi, i loved this video, and yes you,re right,as a black person living in buenos airesi said it's terrible, racism all the time, people saw me and start to run after me with chains, and stick to hit me, all the time. I went to hospital, when doctors realized i was black, they live me alone there bleeding, for a week, without food or bathroom. Two times a week, police put me in jail, just because i'm black, is terrible, please do not visit buenos aires again, now i'm in a conteiner locked i just a black person, and people here is racist. There are a whole bunch of non-Black and/or non-women folk coming here to negate my experience because they had a great time in Buenos Aires. Argentines have nothing against black people because they know nothing about black people, it is a country where practicing black people do not exist and therefore they have never created positive or negative prejudices against them. What happens is that Americans believe that they are the center of the world, and in this case, they analyze the racism of other countries thinking that the racism of all the countries in the world is the same as the racism of the United States.

I had Ubers cancel on me too in BA but I was told it was because I was not paying cash. Once I switched my Uber to paying cash, I did not have that problem anymore.

If you pay with a credit card or debit card, the driver gets paid with a lag of 30 or 60 days, so they lose because of inflation, and also if you paid in US dollars, the government steals the gap between official and unofficial rate. That's not racism, that is people trying to protect their money from a crashed economy and a corrupt government.
That's the reason. Credit card payments in Uber was banned in Argentina so that's why they cancel the trips.

My father told me that Argentina is the most racist place he had ever visited in his 80something year life. My father traveled the globe as a businessman from Africa. I just got back to Canada from Barcelona where I was very obviously a tourist. I’ve never experienced that intense energy before. It was clear distain and contempt or sometimes I was just treated as completely invisible. The restaurant service and sidewalks were the same for me as you describe. I wasn’t sure if it was a difference in cultural standards or just them hating tourists/Americans. Crazy experience but I guess that’s part of the adventure of travel. I wouldn’t go back there either. ❤️
We went to Brussels (All Blacks except one of our sound guys from Church Arnold a White Romanian-). We had gone on a church plant mission from England. Our pastor had been there before. It was a group of seven and we ordered food costing over 200 euros. The bread rolls we had were called and the food sub-standard. Normally in England if a particular dish isn't up to standard, you can have the restaurant cook the same thing again. Not so in Brussels. Over there, if you ain't happy you can leave but you still have to pay for the sub standard meal. The whole thing was bizarre and not a great advert for Belgium. At least you yourself are white so am not sure what the crack was there but definitely that restaurant for me was a shocker

I am sorry you felt that way. While I respect your views, I must say that I disagree that Buenos Aires is a racist city. There are racists of course but as a black person living here for over 8 years, I can say they are welcoming people.
I've had strangers defended me against their own many times or even offer help. Many times I even treated better than Argentines.
I also know many black persons here and the incidents of discrimination are rare.
Again, I'm sorry you had that experience but I would definitely recommend Buenos Aires to Black people. That is why I started sharing on youtube about the culture. A few bad experiences in a week can turn you off but living in the country helps you to really understand the culture.

My first time in Buenas Aires a decade ago was a dream!!! The dollar was super strong, the service was amazing and the food was delicious. What happened?!? When Shida and I went into the restaurant only to never be served once we were seated… I was like wait…people don’t want these good coins?!? Ugh! It's very common in Buenos Aires not to be served in a restaurant. More if you go to a touristy place at rush hour. As an Argentine I have experienced that my whole life.
I'm not saying my country is not racist, which is, but if you are American the experience of going to a shop or to a restaurant is very different to that of the States because employees are not trained to be nice and condescending to customers.

Thats something cultural. There is no one at the entrance (like other countries i visited), when you sit down you only need to make a signal and the waiter will come. Then the workers of the establishment they will not molest you (interrupt you while you are eating or talking), when you finished, they still will not approach you until you wish to leave that place and at this moment they would give you the bill. I as an argentinian i feel that in some foreign food places the people were to pushy and I feel a little upset that the waitress gave me the bill one minute after i finished when i still i was having a good time with my partner. There are different codes.
There seems to be a pattern here in the comments. Argentinians are basically saying, this happens to us, too, so how can this be racism? On the other hand, you and other people from the US who are also black are saying, trust us, this is racism. No one is disagreeing with you that your experiences were bad. But, to strongly imply it ´s racism, based on a short stay is unfair. Also, I have lived here for 12 years, am most definitely not white, but have never experienced racism. I ´ve had unpleasant experiences here and there, but racism had nothing to do with it. Also, my Argentinian husband has also experienced all those bad experiences that you did as well, not because of racism. Argentinians can be that way with each other. And they treated you no differently. Customer service, in general, is not that great here, especially in restaurants. And that guy on the street who didn ´t move out of his way for you, that happens to my husband and everyone here time and again. The thing to do for people like that is to simply tap them on the shoulder and say, permiso. They will move every time. The taxis, someone else already explained. They will often not turn off their lights when answering another call. And Ubers, if you are paying with credit, or someone else orders an Uber and is going further and will therefor pay more, they will go with the higher paying customer every time. Same for hotels, even on Airbnb. Hotels and home or apartment owners might cancel reservations here because they know they can charge more to a newer guest. No one is denying nor discounting your bad experiences. Especially for those of us who live here, we know how annoying it can be here sometimes. But, as an American, I feel we have been conditioned to automatically see racism everywhere, even when there is no call to. And this idea, is it racism or is it…is very American. Black and other non white friends from other countries, or even the US, have told me that they have not experienced racism here, either. Nor did I see it when I was with them. Again, I am not discounting nor denying your bad experiences. Nor even denying that racism might exist here as well. Just pointing out that to paint an entire country, an entire people a certain negative way based on a short trip is unfair.

I don´t wanna negate your experience but after listening to you I have the impression that your bad time here had more to do with being a privileged american that being a black person. I am Argentine. Everything negative that you pointed out is real, I have experienced it in Buenos Aires. People don't pick up dog poop, behavior on the street is rude, service in many places is very bad, getting a taxi is very difficult. I don't think it's discrimination, it's just disastrous quality of service. To have a good experience it is necessary to know the recommended places and only visit the tourist area.a.

This is so interesting to me! I had a very similar experience in Santiago,Chile. After being there for 4 months I knew I would never go back. I was the only black woman within my study abroad program (which is fine). However I remember being told by the wife of my host family that I was not allowed to travel with them to certain places because I was too dark. It was an experience amongst many that I will never forget!!! After that moment I started asking questions about their history and doing my own research. It blows my mind that most Chileans believe they are white🤦🏽♀️. Lord have mercy.

madrid, Spain. i was physically and verbally assaulted by men multiple times because they assume all black women are prostitutes. Otherwise i was treated well for 3 months, (no issues w taxis or service) but i will not be going back. and not that it matters but i was working there at US embassy so i was always dressed professionally during these encounters. That thing with the money is insane. I recently visited Belize and it was very convenient to use the US dollar. The exchange was stable at a 2 to 1 rate everywhere so I didn't have to do mental gymnastics no matter how I paid.

Wow! I studied abroad in Argentina in 2016 and it was 26 pesos to the dollar I believe back then. I cant believe how much the value of the peso has dropped in that time. I only drove in an uber once back then because there was this big push back from the taxi’s and uber drivers were being harassed so im assuming that has changed with time. I actually had one good experience with a taxi driver, left my phone in the car and she brought it back to me the next day to university 😅. Super lucky, her son and I are still friends on facebook to this day. used to see people get picked pocketed and robbed a lot, so im assuming with the economy it is even worse now. I feel you on the dog pop 😂. My roommate was Argentine but she wasn't from Buenos Aires and we use to say all the time the city is crazy, I have stories for days. Mendoza and Córdoba are so much more chill

Buenos Aires has been on my travel list for a while but now 🥴🥴 I had a similar experience with wondering if I was experiencing racism, during my short and unpleasant stay in Poland. I had no issues in Krzyżowa, a beautiful small village. But when I got to Wrocław… I honestly said I’m NEVER coming back to Poland. Myself and my friend (who is also black) were on a Europe tour with other students while in college. We were the only two black people on that trip. We were walking around the Wrocław downtown square and kept getting stared at. At first we didn’t care because it’s (central) Europe, we don’t expect there to be a lot of black people. Then the stares became uncomfortable and as we stood talking to each other a tall man in a black leather jacket (not a skinhead at first glance but who knows) walked from the other side of the square with this angry look on his face, stood right in front of us and shouted something at us in Polish. We didn’t know what he said so we just assumed either he was crazy or a racist. No one did or said anything to help or explain to us what he said so we just walked away. Then we went to a fast food restaurant to get something to eat and we stood in line for an unusually long time. The server/cashier even started attending to customers behind us. We were so confused. It wasn’t until I assertively said, “Excuse me, can we please order? We’ve been standing her for a while”. The server pretty much rolled her eyes and reluctantly attended to us. The whole thing was bizarre and uncomfortable to say the least for only myself and my friend. While everyone else went out that night she and I stayed in our hotel room because we didn’t feel welcome in that city. Because we couldn’t speak or understand Polish, we weren’t sure what was being said but the vibes (if I can put it that way) were way off. I told myself I wouldn’t come back to Poland which is a shame because I have met lovely Polish people outside of Poland. 🤷🏽♀️ I also don’t want to make a judgement about a whole country based on my experience in one city but it’s hard not to lol

I went to BsAs in 2010 and I can attest that even back then, there was so much dog poop EVERYWHERE. One of my friends even slipped and fell on some. I went with a couple of friends: a Chinese-American, a Mexican American, and a Jewish friend-I'm a black male. Maybe I was insulated from any racism? I did go out on the town by myself one night, and everyone kept asking if I was from Brazil. I also noticed I was the ONLY black person everywhere I went. One bar did deny me entry but my Spanish is non-existent so I couldn't understand the reason why. I actually did make a friend there from a pub crawl I went to and we are friends to this day; I even visited him since he moved to Berlin. He said that there is not much interaction with blacks in Argentina-that Argentines are very snooty and think they are the "creme de la creme" of South America. They consider Brazil as totally underclass, and that extends to how they feel about black folks as well. There is very little black immigration into Argentina from Brazil.
Like I said, I didn't really have any "bad" experiences when I went out solo, maybe a lot of people being indifferent to my presence. I felt the same way when I went to Prague. Because I wasn't engaged by people in both of those places like I have been virtually everywhere else, I also wouldn't recommend BsAs OR Prague.

I'm from Buenos Aires (the province not the city), and yeah people from the city are rude to the point that parisians seemed nice to me. That thing where they don't move drives me insane, is so common. The taxi thing, taxi drivers are shady af, I wouldn't put racism past them.
What you gather about the economy is 1000% correct. We have more than 6 different exchange rates, and it's a nightmare for turists and exports. Our peso loses value every single day, the inflation rate is of 5% monthly so every time we go buy something it's more expensive, and there are no jobs, so yeah there isn't much hope for the peso.
I hope you had a good time in Antartica and perhaps consider visiting other parts of our country that reflect better on us (if you haven't already).

Guys, Ubers always cancel in South America. Taxi’s always stopped for me but sometimes refused to go to the international airport during rush hour. I’m a 6’9” black ex 🏈 player.

I had the taxi experience in Barcelona, I had to go into a hotel and asked the bell boy to get me a cab, because I could not get an empty one to stop...I did not have that experience in Madrid....It sounds like racism to me

I didn’t find anymore dog poop than in Paris - but they do have a lot of stray dogs, so it may not necessarily dog owners. Did you not notice the dog poop the first time? Not sure why you would return if this is a problem. It’s also a country not used to mass tourism. IDK… didn’t have a problem.
The Bronx NY has more dog poop and human cold spit on the sidewalk than anywhere else. To each is their own.

Ugh. Sorry you had that experience. Not going there. I’ve been in Playa Del Carmen for a month, staying in an AirBB in Palmas Turquesa. I walk to the market and laundry weekly. The dog poop in this area is terrible, it’s hard to catch a taxi (they ride by empty) , and the WOMEN are rude. One of them actually went out of her way to bumped my 11 year old daughter on purpose. So much room and you saw her! I can’t get arrested in Mexico… so, I’m going to Mexico City next week. If I ever come back, I will stay in Centro.
If you see any posters up for Solemans DJ events in PDC you should go before you leave.
I had so much fun when I was there and met a lot of expats at his event. I don’t remember the name of the Restraunt bar it was at on the main strip. But there were a lot of black people there having fun who live in PDC
and Suleman is such a sweet soul who will welcome you.
Merida is also another great option for Mexico. I just left, but it was a really great experience. The people are friendly, there's a decent-sized black community that meets up weekly. I never felt unsafe. I'm planning on going back toward the end of summer
@@misterniceguy67 I picked an airbnb that was in north Mérida. It ended up being about 20 minutes from Progresso Beach and 30 minutes from Centro. Ubers/DiDis were really cheap so it was still pretty convenient. If you plan to stay a bit I would say pick an airbnb and scout the area. The best prices aren't online, you find them walking around the city.

All those things are so true! I suppose my experience was overshadowed by the fact that I dance and had a sort of built in community. I met people every time I went out and they invited me to their homes etc. I also stayed long term in a guest house where the owner/lady and her family were always looking out for me. I went out with her sometimes and even went partying with her sons! In a way I was almost always with locals and whenever I needed a taxi I asked someone in the restaurant or even a stranger on the street to help me call a cab. Every time I went somewhere I told them upfront I would be using pesos so there was no confusion. Sorry you had a bad experience and It does seem like things have very much declined in that country.

I’m from the states and have been living here from April 2019 to present. You are correct there is so much dog poop everywhere! It’s really sad that not everyone picks up their dogs poop! The ppl are rude and will not move out of the way. This happens in the small grocery stores all the time and other places. Many ppl have been rude to me in the past three years. Most of the time if I’m speaking English to my children some people will be even more rude too us! On the other hand I have met some very nice people as well. Yes, the inflation is really bad here at the moment. When we arrived her in 2019 you could get 45 pesos for every dollar now it’s 222 pesos to the dollars. If your able to have dollars and exchange to pesos you definitely have buying power! Keep in mind there is good and bad in ever country. We have never had problems with Uber coming to pick us up. Actually the experience for transportation has always been pretty good.

I was born in Buenos Aires, is the worst part of Argentina, unfortunately is the only city foreigners ear about overseas but Argentina is a really large country with a lot of beautiful other places to know.
As an aborigin descendant I must say you can feel the racism, not directly but in the way most argentinians perceive themselves as europeans, they not even consider themselves latinamerican. I know there was a lot of eurpean immigration centuries ago but they systematically denies the other ethnicities that are part of Argentina too.

I befriended a girl from Africa when I was there. We were both young ladies. She is graduating from the university and asked if I would come to her graduation. I told her virtually, in spirit, congratulation to her via the wind to carry, but, by TMH, I will never step foot, toe, finger nail, breath, ear lobe (U get my point) into that horrible country again!

well, I didn't think the dog poop in Cannes was egregious. Maybe because I was in Nice prior, and went to Marseille afterwards. Take all the dog poop of Nice and Cannes, then add bird poop on literally everything, maniac drivers, hundreds of unemployed young men staking out tourist sites and stations, coupled in with worn-rundown buildings and voila! Marseille, France. Viva la France 🇨🇵 I talk smack because it was not a beautiful city in the slightest, but the people were some of the most hospitable I've ever met anywhere, second only to those of Helsinki, which is also not a nice looking city, for the most part. The hospitality of the people make up for it. People in Cannes are very respectful by the way, and the people in Nice are helpful for the most part. Southern France is the exact opposite of what you will experience with other French people outside of France. No one knows exactly why.

Shida, THANK YOU for sharing your experience!!! Like you, I've traveled a lot over 30+ years, and avoiding...confronting...and reporting racism has always been something I've had to do. This is exactly why there are certain parts of the Planet which I have NO desire to see, let alone give that population any of my hard earned dollars. Argentina is one of those countries. There are too many stories that have been shared by other Diasporans about horrible treatment they've experienced there. Why would Black & Brown want to pay to experience marginalization and exclusion, when we can stay in the US and get it for free????!!! To the contrary, Mexico is one of my FAVORITE places to visit, and I've been to a number of different cities over the years. I've ALWAYS felt welcome as an African American male, especially since Spanish is my second language. I've made friendships with locals that I've maintained over the years. They honestly seem to like, not simply tolerate, Black & Brown people. Places like this will always get my return business, as well as praise (Side note: I received this positive reception in the 3 Middle Eastern countries I've visited as well, and would recommend them to any Black & Brown travelers: Oman, Qatar, and Dubai.) Me and my wife (both black) shared a table in the Moulin Rouge in Paris with an Argentinian couple. A man from Argentina asked us to take his picture at Versailles. They spoke English and were very friendly and inquisitive. Thanks for the heads up. We are retirees and have no time for racist countries.

Hi Shida. It's great to travel freely as Black women but it's important to understand history. Confederate generals and soldiers moved their families to South America after the American civil war, and 100 years later Nazi Germans were on code and moved there too, knowing the stage had been set. Central America, especially Costa Rica fought back against a white supremacy movement called "the Golden Circle" and rejected the racist roaches who scurried further south. They're now generations deep as cultural influencers. It shouldn't deter black women from traveling but history is more present than we often think. Stay safe and continue to enjoy life in spite of them!

Thank you for explaining about confederate going to south America. I didn't know. Argentinians don't consider themselves South Americans, but more like white Europeans in Argentina. Brazil also tend to separate the dark skin from their small circle of European descendants. ( I have friends in both countries, but it's true. ).

They are mostly white Europeans, though there are a lot of Italian descent with darker hair, eyes, and skin that would be considered ethnic white in the U.S., instead of just white. I think the lack of racial diversity, in addition to the racist immigrants from Nazi Germany, have contributed to the current culture.

8:10 probably you should know most taxis here worlk by being calling them trough apps. If they are on route to an app call they still show the free light but they don't stop if try to stop them on the street. Sometimes they signal you "no" with their hand and you know they are alrrady on route to client. Normally they only ignores you.
I am from Buenos Aires, I live in BA, I am sorry for your experiences, I have to say that I have many friends, from different countries and races, including black people, who told a different story, totally opposite to yours about the people's behaviour. Dog poop is real, but people have improved a lot and it depends on the neighborhood. I also agree with the exchange issue and the economy. As a big city, it has the usual common problems. And you can find a diversity of situations, good or not so good, but it cannot be something to decide not to visit. Anyway, you are welcome again if you want to repeat, and I even offer you my home to stay. Buenos Aires is well worth visiting because of much more positive things than negative. Hugs.

I appreciate your view on Buenos Aires, as I'm going there in a few months. I'm a black man so maybe I will experience some of the same as you did. But that being said I'm currently in South America, and I have been in SA for 8 months now. And some of the things you mentioned are similar in the two countries that I have been. That also being said I know Argentina is different than other SA countries (especially the north where I'm currently at the moment) But I have some Argentine friends, and I speak almost fluent Spanish so maybe those two things will make a difference in my experience. I'm also planning to stay longer than two weeks actually a few months so maybe I will have a totally different viewpoint ( for better or worse) But I really do appreciate this video, because I will at least have some things to look for, and will be better prepared before my trip there.

I was really psyched about traveling to Buenos Aires to see if this is a place I could relocate to. I am a native New Yorker and I want a costal cosmopolitan city. I know I would love Mexico City, however, It is not close enough to the shore. I appreciate you sharing all of your experiences traveling all over the world. I know BA has experienced a lot of immigration from other South and Latin American countries like Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic and Haiti. And there are Black Argentinians, although I know the population is small and I do know the history. During ww2 the president of Argentina made a comment that sympathized with Nazis. Germany were welcomed to Argentina after that comment. Germany promised economic deals after the war. Many Germany escaped to South America. If you look at the history they eventually kicked out people of African decent out or Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Couple that with what someone mentioned about the idealism of superiority of Argentinians I would feel uncomfortable visiting there for long.
Peron is the president you mention, Evita's husband. He was friends with Franco (Spanish dictator, Hitler's friend) and yes Nazi simpatizer. Also, a pedophil, he had a romantic relationship with a 14 year old.
But the Afroargentinians were not kicked out, they were killed. When the Independance war broke most of the black enslaved men were offered comissions to fight in the war. They were foot soldiers and sent to the front lines, most were killed there. In all the following wars with Spain, Brazil, and Paraguay similar strategies were used, literally decimating the population. Another problem was the yellow fever epidemics, that killed black people disproportionately.

I live close to Spain ( living now in Portugal) but I won't be going there... when I was last there I was treated fine. But I've heard that Black people these day are not treated very nicely there About 2 year ago I had a 3 hour lay-over there traveling from Morocco and the ticket agents were grouchy and rude to me when I tried to get help on which gate to go to. Top of the list for maybe you may not want to go to if you're Black is CHINA!

I stayed in Buenos Aires city for almost 6 months last year. Yes there's a lot of dog poop, yes customer service is slow and can at times be very frustrating. Yes the taxi drivers and most people don't speak English. and yes the economy isn't at its best but if you are earning in dollars or Euros the country can be very cheap for a tourist to visit. It is difficult however to get money in the country if you haven't brought enough cash with you to exchange in the blue rate market, but there is always Wester Union (exchange rate is blue rate) if you are patient enough to do so. With that being said, I still highly enjoyed my experience in the city and met many locals who were kind. I am a Filipino and have definitely experienced racism in other countries around the world but I still try to see the beauty in all the places I am lucky enough to travel to.
I am in Buenos Aires right now and I spent close to 5 weeks in Uruguay .
I won't comment on Shida's experience because it is hers ( person, time, manners, language,etc.) and hers only.
I am a Black North American , 50 year old plus and a male.
In the Retiro neighbourhood, about the Cancilleria, I have never seen dog poop but 2 or more blocks away, I can smell urine on the sidewalks or see 1 or 2 people literally sleeping on the sidewalk, sometimes on a cheap foam mattress.
Getting a taxi in Buenos Aires can be hard at certain times ( office closing time) but at least 3 times, as a senior Black man I was able to get a taxi by hailing who not only drove me but was willing to wait for me for short errands and even without my asking offered to pick me up later and dropped me their name and telephone number for future errands.
As to people on the sidewalk blocking my way , I would forcefully and willingly walk INTO their path, so they would have to part away or we would lock into our steps.
Microagressions or microracism acts are worldwide ; my take on this : fight back , don't run away. Jewish people suffered at the hands of Nazi Germany but STILL visit Germany and live there.
Generally, Uruguayans think they are a cut above the Argentinians.
Hello, Argentinian here. Thanks for the video, being so polite about the bad experiences and not rushing to call us racists as I´ve seen in other occasions.
Reason 1: This is an issue, it used to be much worse and there are lots of neighborhoods that nowadays have none of that thanks to public dispensers of plastic bags to pick them up and fines against people who do this. I dont know which neighborhood you attended, but I agree that its disgusting, and I think your reading about people not caring for their neighbours is sort of true. I could elaborate more on the last if you like.
Reason 2: The rudeness of people may be due to a cultural shock, we have a really weird way of interacting with each other and to the untrained eye it can all look very rude, agressive, etc. For example, in my group of life-long friends, we never call each other by our names, here are some nicknames we have for each other: "el gordo, el papu, la gordita, el negro, el chichi, el mudo, el chino" Translation (roguh) : " Fatty, dad, the little fat(woman), the black, the chichi, the mute, the chinese" . None of these are understood as an insult, its even more endearing to call someone by their nickname rather than their actual name. The rudeness of some people on the street, like the people that would not move or block the way doesnt sound like something out of the ordinary but its not unpolite if they didnt see you in my opinion. On the other hand, the guy that blocked your way was an idiot.
Reason 3: It has happened to me that 4 taxis went past me (im white as can be, all my family is all italian), this is because sometimes taxis are called to go to a certain location and they dont turn off their marker. It's dumb, yes, but that may be your case + bad luck.
Just one month ago I sat at a bar for almost 30 minutes without anyone coming to take my order, when I realized that I had to go to the "barra" and ask it for myself there, xd.
I understand that being from up there you ask yourself the question about racism and I dont blame you for it, there are some truly racist people here, but Its safe to say that its a minority. I suspect there are concentrations of these racist people from german colonies mostly from the nazis that came here in the second world war. Racism is shunned here, there are a lot of "mestizos" because we are really mixed, but this idea of argentinians being racists or white may come from 2 sources:
- "The porteños" Is a term for the people of the capital city, sadly the cliche for these people is that they feel better than the rest and say that Argentina is european. This can be mistaken for racism but its not, its just a form of nationalism that turns out disgusting for everyone. I have met people like this, but Its safe to say that its not all people from buenos aires, every place has their brand of dumbasses.
- Cultural shock. The argentinian way of socializing is crazy in a way, its hard for a foreigner to understand us in my opinion. The Argentinian is very invasive of personal space generally, not caring to offend, daring to do big leaps of trust between people, and people generally dont take the other too seriously (which is why sometimes people can feel rude and sometimes this can be expressed in the wrong ways, such as not caring about their neighbours). But, as I have experienced bad things, I have also experienced beautiful acts of kindness all over the city. Like shop keepers from my neighborhood learning my name and asking me how I have been doing or trusting me with money, people helping me off the ground after dislocating my knee, etc etc. It's like all places, we cant form our entire view from a small sample.
For some perspective about how the average argentinian is, take as an example the crazyness around football (Soccer, for those that don´t understand anything about the sport ;) ) , No other country has that type of behaviour around a sport, and its more than a sport really, we project everything culture-related to it.

Thank you for being so honest. Vacations are costly in terms of time and money. It would really be disappointing for me to spend all that money and time to visit a city where I may not feel welcome. Perhaps when I am retired I can take a chance but not now. Thanks!

Argentina has 23 provinces (states). Buenos Aires is just one city in Argentina. It’s like saying don’t go to America because people in NYC are rude. I honestly been all over Argentina and had a great time. People like to say Argentina is a racist county but they have always opened their borders to everyone. Don’t make your decision based on persons experience. Go visit Argentina from North to South and then make your decision. I will put money that you will have good things to say.

@@Maremare680 Service, it wasn't just poor, it was consistently with an attitude. I was a solo traveler and many (not all) places were very obvious and blunt about not caring for my business. Also at night many people crossed the street as I came down the sidewalk (barely 5'5).

You should go have fun with your co-workers and ignore the rude people. It’s not the same having friends there as it would be wondering around solo as a tourist. That’s the best way to experience a country is with friends that are from there. Unless it’s going to be your only vacation for years to come and you have somewhere “better” you’d rather go.

hi, i loved this video, and yes you,re right,as a black person living in buenos airesi said it's terrible, racism all the time, people saw me and start to run after me with chains, and stick to hit me, all the time. I went to hospital, when doctors realized i was black, they live me alone there bleeding, for a week, without food or bathroom. Two times a week, police put me in jail, just because i'm black, is terrible, please do not visit buenos aires again, now i'm in a conteiner locked i just a black person, and people here is racist. Probably deport me to some african country, i'm argentinian, but it does'nt matter, because i'm black.....
