I’m 43 and want to retire by 50. You just lit a fire in me to learn more about F.I.RE. This was so inspiring! It’s my goal to be in full control of my life. Thank you for showing us the beginning pathways to this lifestyle. You’re magnificent!✨✨✨
I’m turning 41 next month, a lawyer, have been working since I was a kid, and I am TIRED! Just found about FIRE. I also have a very stressful job, and don’t want a side hustle. My family is here in Canada, so don’t think I’d leave, but I am gonna work towards being a lady of leisure! Your video is inspiring 🙏🏼🇨🇦
Oooof! I feel ya. I hope FIRE treats you well. It's a journey, but for most of us, the pace society tells us to keep isn't sustainable over the long-term.💛
Lady this is me except not a lawyer. Thanks to my emergency fund, losing my job during covid was me saying "oh well" and taking time off to rebuild my health and pulling back from the intense burnout I've been going through. Tired doesn't begin to describe that feeling, and you feel it so much the first day you can just sleep. I wish you all the best because I am not interested in being top-dog/CEO of anything but a decent life. And I want a life while I am still alive enough to live it.
I am also a lawyer in Canada and I turn 46 this year, and I am sooooo TIREDD. But I honestly don’t know if I can can retire. I also have twins that are three years old. I need to save for their education and all. My dream is to move somewhere warm, just be a mom and don’t have to worry about bills.
Oh my gosh, I want to like every 3rd sentence. I relate to so much of what you're saying!!! No side hustle, no flipping houses, bad work experiences - totally spent!!! I can't wait to retire early. Travel and be that lady of leisure.
I'm 33 and you have mentioned so many things about how I want to live my life by 40. I don't want to chase money all my life, I want to live but I want to live well. I am not really a minimalist, not that extravagant either but need to manage my money better. Which is hard because I also think it's important to live in the moment instead of living painfully hoping to enjoy later. I guess what is important is balance. I am still navigating how to live the 'retirement life' by 40. Good video.
OMG a year and a half ago some shenanigans happened on my job of 18 years working for the federal government. My mother was dying of cancer and one day she reminded of how much money I saved in my TSP and she said pay off your house and you are debt free🙆🏾♀️ I did it and OMG what a relief. I’m 59 years old and had no debt, my house and vehicles were paid for. Every morning I wake up and thank God that I was such a minimalist that I paid off all my debt and I am FREE, debt free and retired ! Than you Lord! I plan to run road races again and travel.
Did you withdraw your retirement money? That’s what I’m thinking about doing - investing my retirement money and quitting my government job that I’ve been miserable at for 17 years! Not sure what to invest it in though.
I loved your video and shared it with my bestie/Lil sis, I'm 50 and she's 38, I feel behind in life but I will continue to pursue my retirement and hopefully will be able to walk away in 5yrs, wish me luck. 🙏
@@trinab.9633 bless you too sis. Everyone’s journey is different. I’m 50 as well and I know how you feel, but our thoughts about ourselves shape our reality. Constant elevation to you....
I applied for my D7 visa for Portugal already. Began selling stuff 1 yr in advance to keep last-minute stress down Getting mortgage paid off. Getting new tenants for my rental properties before I travel. I have 5-6 months to go God-willing. I can relate to your over 200k school loan; mine was 325k with interest that I paid in all for med school. Wishing everyone the best!
Hi Shida! This video just popped up so I clicked again. Guess what? I did leave in July and am now in Portugal. Getting to know the city with family. Work was still so demanding that I said “I’m done, I can’t take it anymore” so I quit before I was ready-ready but we’ll still be fine. Mortgage is gone but savings are not as plush as I wanted but it’ll get there soon enough. Sometimes we have to just DO IT even before things are “perfect”. I’m happy to see so many hearing your message and gaining courage. THANK YOU 🤗
I loved that you broke all the rules and lived in a small house in the hood!! That mindset switch is a necessary part of the journey while other lawyers might wish they thought of it after working their asses off for years. You GO GIRL!!! :D
I love hearing these stories! I have been following ORJ's channel for some time as well. After I paid off my student loan, the entire world open up, which was how I was able to quit my job and travel the world. This was two years ago!
You rock ma’am!!! I am turning 46 and stuck in a government agency that doesn’t have any mobility. I’ve been lookin into how to let go of this job that I love and retire before I turn 55. This video gave me so much hopes and I am excited to set goals and do this within 8years! I appreciate you sharin your experience ma’am! Love it!
Well done.! You're so right about retiring early and abroad! My wife and I live in Tijuana, Mexico on about $1000 per month. I'm semi retired, still a wage slave for a few months per year. Nice to see someone speaking to the fact that you don't need a million or more to retire. I'm Canadian and it's just as expensive as the US but Mexico is definitely a safe harbor for anyone with a smaller pension or investment income. Plus it's a great place to live. No place I'd rather be. So nice to see what you've accomplished and have you share it with everyone! And what a beautiful smile. Enjoy that life you've worked so hard for. Cheers!!!
@@user-xd7qg1up4z well ,Im a Canadian and ive been living in Tijuana off and on since 1984. Now my wife who is Mexican, and i have 3 properties there. Ive never had an issue in 36 years. I dont live in a gated community. Honestly, i feel safer in Tijuana than I do in the US which has hundreds of mass shootings per year. The high murder rate in Tijuana is mostly due to low level drug dealers killing each other. Mexicans call it the trash taking out the trash. If you stay away from drugs youre safer there than the US. Lax gun laws in the US make Shopping at Walmart in Tijuana feel safe. Americans refuse to see juat how dangerous their country is not to mention the racism in the US is quite sickening.
We can't wait to retire, 17 months...but who's counting. We can wait to get involved with volunteer work in Central America, we are moving as soon as we retire.
I really enjoy your transparency! I am very late to the FIRE game but am looking for our family to become financially independent within the next 8 years too. Your story is an inspiration. Thanks so much for sharing!
Kudos for figuring it out so soon! I retired early, but still a couple of decades in life after you, and even though I have enough money to be modestly comfortable for the rest of my life, I'd probably still be working if it hadn't been a necessity, to be sole caretaker for my mom. I'm not free to travel outside the US at this point, since taking mom abroad would be both risky and a logistical nightmare, but even so, it's clear to me now that retiring when I did, if not sooner, would have been the smart move even without the need to care for mom. So many folks never figure out how much is enough, and stay on the treadmill to the bitter end. Thankful I won't be going down that road.
Awwwww you were inspired by Our Rich Journey too! I love them. My husband and I are 29, and we feel like you guys are all goals! We’re at the perfect time. Congrats!!! 🔥
I think this is the best way information I have heard all year. Thanks for reminding us that we don't have to feel bad that we don't want to work so hard. That we can have a leisure lifestyle and receive income. Need information, blue print and be inspired from people like you. Needed to hear This.
Proud of you - Great job retiring, my goal is to retire by 41, Index funds and ETF it is as I own rental homes already, Pray for me and I will pray for you in your retirement.
Saw you on CNBC ! When you say you are a lady of leisure I related to you! I do not want to work more than I have to! I am on my FIRE journey and I thank you for sharing this video! 💗 wish me luck! So excited to check our more of your content!
SMH. Goodness gracious! Why did I enjoy this video so much? I laughed. I had something to think about. I was motivated and impressed. It is so hard at times to find people who retired by their financial investments only or mostly, moved out of the U.S.A. or spend most of their time outside of it; especially melanated people. I watch and love the Our Rich Journey family also.
Just watched you on CNBC Make It. You made it, packaged it, sold it, flipped it and reversed it. The epitome of black girl magic right here. Salute to you!
I finally found my person!!!! So honest and your values align with mine! You have no shame about not hustling for more more more!!! Honestly this is the affirmation i needed! I love a life of chilling and that’s what I’m working ( for now) towards . It’s just lovely to see this attitude in the world of FIRE because i feel the same. But I’d always be questioning myself like why don’t i wanna do everything on my own, change my tires, install a toilet lol no thanks!
I needed to hear this haha I'm 24 - priorities are paying off debt and saving while contributing to my 401k and RothIRA - and learning more about stocks and investing
You are in a great place! If you are saving and start getting more serious about investing now you can achieve financial freedom early. Gotta love compound interest.
You're Young & Off to a very great start; just continue to stay disciplined, automate your savings & keep increasing your savings as you pay down debt. Best wishes!!!
WHen she said, "you probably don't want to be in the US anyways." I lowkey wanted to cry like, "Yeeeees!!!!! I don't wanna be here no more. I need to live my truth."
I love the lip color! And ooooh to travel for a year! That is a dream of mine and what I am woring towards. I discovered the FIRE Movement 3 years ago and now I am also on track to be retired by 40 =) Looking forward to checking out your guide!
WOW! You put it in plain words for the world to hear. Live your life to the fullest. Thanks for the video and you only give positive words. This post was for another video but I saw that it was CBS or some other channel that wasn't yours. I'll be visiting Mexico in the summer thank you.
Hi Thanks for the straight, honest informational video. I am in the same place as you were (already FIRE without realizing) and now I am trying for "living in a new city for a year every year" This is a big change and People around me do not lead a lifestyle like me so it took me a while to gather up the courage. I finally put my house in the market. Fingers crossed. Thanks again you gave me the inspiration that I needed
Great work with this video. You are right on the money with your observations and guidelines. Also, folks remember there are so many choices for low cost retirement destinations. Short list: Foreleza, Brazil Queretaro, Mexico Cordoba, Argentina Da Nang, Vietnam................even places like Bucharest, Romania. So, listen to Roshida...she knows what she is doing. Great work.
Anyone trying to retire and stay in the US, with or without a spouse and kids, has to have a FIRE number near or within 7 figures. That's why I'm trying to head south of the border. Congratulations on achieving FIRE! 👏🏾👏🏾 👏🏾Anyone starting work at age 12 deserves to retire early. Kick those feet up girl!
I’ve worked since 16 and I feel like my parents really did me a disservice specifically my Dad. I made so much money before being on my own. I can’t seem to find that money! Trying to teach my children differently though.
Listen, when you said that you had a stressful job and that it took everything out of you and you don’t want to do 💩else…I felt that because I promise I am right there with you. I pray daily for a way out of my stressful situation…so glad I stumbled across your channel!
And when she said, " I rode that bitch until the wheels fell off " I knew hers was the channel for me! Love the energy and so many jewels dropped in this video. Liked, subscribed and notification on👑
Thanks Shida... great video! I have enough to retire today (at 39), but haven't pulled the trigger. The hesitation is similar to what you described, where I have spent so long building the money making engine (with my career), it's difficult to voluntarily turn it off and live on passive income only. I know I would be happier in life if I did though. Keep up the great videos. I'm looking forward to seeing where your journey takes you.
Great and inspiring video! Make a budget, stop buying stuff you don’t need, pay off debt, save and invest! Easier said then done but definitely possible!!!!
This is amazing! I’m inspired by your journey ☺️. I’m 31 and debt free. I have been wanting to live bi-coastally or location independent for years now. I think FIRE-ish is calling my name in a few years.
Planning to retire in 5 months at 51. People don’t understand how it’s even possible. Save like hell, live debt free, save like hell;). Oh and invest in real estate. This gal is amazing. Lots of travel plans.
I’m 48 in July and have a few retirement aims. Max is retire at 60. Then 57, 55, 52 and 50. All depending on certain factors. I’m doing well so maybe 55 is in sight 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much, I have been following ORJ for a long time but I don't want to do any house flipping either! : ) I love the idea of doing very little with big returns. Looking forward to watching more of your videos! Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thank you for this share. I'm thinking of doing the same as you did but it is so hard to walk away from a six figure salary. I get excited and nervous just thinking about it because financial security and stability are very important to me. The internal struggle continues...
I almost didn't click on this video but now I am subscribing now. I am a world traveler and lived in Europe for a while. Not afraid of being an expat again - probably someplace south of the border, just not sure where. I have, VA disability and will eventually have pension, TSP, and SS. No debt except mortgage. Thanks for sharing! We have similar stories. Bought our first cheap house when others were buying McMansions. Saved up, buy index funds (We flip houses, do side hustles like ebay shops and deliver food for restaurants... bought rental properties too for cash flow). We travelled around the world when I was 39 too and when we came back I realized we had enough money to retire. Both me and my wife love our jobs though so we kept working when we came back. Good job, you have made it!
It was the end for me “g e t o u t o f t h e U S” I always been saying, the US is not it and nor does it have to be. I currently work at a call center and I got a call from a black woman who owns 8 properties and quit her job last week and she was dropping dimes and let me keep her # so she could further advise me. I felt like it was God because my dad, that week, told me not to get an apartment if possible and build wealth. Then my BFF quit her job that was killing her and I am about to send her this video. Idk I feel all this is tying together. Thx a million!
What an amazing story, I'm pursuing fire as well and this gives me so much motivation! I'm 32, debt free, and live on 23% of my income, the intention has to be there! Congrats on all yours success and I look forward to more of your content. New sub 😊
As an immigrant, I absolutely love the life that the US has afforded me. However, living as a now debt free single mom. I want to reclaim my time back. I am writing this today April 11, 2021, when my daughter graduates from high school and head off to college, I am retiring from my career. I want to travel the world and live in a country outside of the USA. Next step is the planning. I was able to payoff nearly $300K in debt in 3 years, I could definitely set myself up to retire in 4 years!
Yes you can! Your story is so similar to mine I'm retired and financially free right now. Glad about the decisions I made 2 years ago and the financial consultant leading me through investing
She’s right though about getting out of the US. There are so many other countries with richer cultures and safer places to live…all u gotta do is start exploring and find your place. Great content!

I opened my Vanguard statement after about 4 years to see the balance and was thrilled to see l make more yearly by not working!😀. It's like the secret the top 10% don't want you to know. Great video, seeing this for the first time, we are also huge fans of ORJ, Amon and Christina! Love your perspective, "you can do anything if you think you can - once you make the decision". My wife and I are what we like to call in a early to middle 50's. Up until about 4 years ago, we honestly thought we would have to work until our middle 60's or even 70 - Ouch! We educated ourselves on managing our own retirement and brokerage funds. Set our FIRE number, and are on track to be done in 2 years, 5 months, 10 days or even sooner. Our plan is to spend 50% of our time in Portugal, and the other 50% in Mexico, and/or Central America (Costa Rica or Panama). Thank you again for sharing your story!
I love this! You're so true to yourself! In the F.I.R.E community I hear so much about side hussles or real estate investing. I’m 59 years old and had no debt, my house and vehicles were paid for. Every morning I wake up and thank God that I was such a minimalist that I paid off all my debt and I am FREE, debt free and retired ! Than you Lord! I plan to run road races again and travel.
That’s an amazing accomplishment!
I'm so sorry about your mum.
Congratulations Sis!!!🙏🏾
Did you withdraw your retirement money? That’s what I’m thinking about doing - investing my retirement money and quitting my government job that I’ve been miserable at for 17 years! Not sure what to invest it in though.
Well done, my dear!
Such a blessing to see a woman of color living this wonderful life AND explaining how she did it. Thank you for sharing, sis!

You’ve got this! Do you have a departure date for Portugal? 💛
So awesome!
@@Roshida Thanks Shida 🌹 It was Early July but will be moving it to the end of the year.
Hood adjacent, lol.
You are really inspiring! It’s not about the money. It’s about your great attitude and your fearlessness! I love it!
I love hearing these stories! I have been following ORJ's channel for some time as well. After I paid off my student loan, the entire world open up, which was how I was able to quit my job and travel the world. This was two years ago!

Cheers!!!
Isn't Mexico dangerous? Especially Tijuana
How’s your quality of life with $1000? Could you break down your expenses?
I retired back at age 39, l'm 44 now, l now do unpaid volunteer work in the field that l love 😁👍

Excellent video .. I took two years off at 33.. living abroad .. living like a king ..it was really worth it .. enjoyed a lot ..

I always been saying, the US is not it and nor does it have to be.

FIRE Number... Wow..I must learn more about it. I just wish I would have known about it earlier in my life. Great video. Thanks for the transparency.
