Let's face it, traveling is not always a positive experience. Although we have highlighted these 5 places as some of the worst places to travel alone for Black travelers, any place around the world can be racist or sexist. Let us know in the comments your thoughts on our list.

One more sub! I'm planning traveling abroad with my future wife during our honeymoon but, assuming that we will have the money to do so, I really wouldn't like to have that ruined because racism, mysogyny, xenophoby and other ill stuff...we will talk more about that!

Truth is, there are some obvious exceptions, but one rarely sees a black guy/ man of color who was not born in America ( or who even a second generation American) get in trouble in the U.S. Similar with Afro-Latinos, East or West Asians, American Indians, etc. Nor African-Americans with similar upbringing as immigrants. Not Ethiopians, Somalians, Jamaica, Dominicans, Dravidians nor Nigerians, simply because they know how to not put themselves in precarious situations and how to deal with authority calmly and non- confrontationally, even when caught in a violation, based on their experiences in their native countries, where parroting "my Constitutional rights" is not going to save you. My relatives, male and female, use the solid commonsense of today's immigrants because it was/ is instilled in the home and school. It helps to stay away from places and situations that imply criminality, to avoid accumulation of legal citations including multiple child support issues and unpaid tickets, and looking neat, well- groomed and appropriately attired. That's whether one's destination is Nairobi or Rome. Definitely in the Middle East!

Most countries outside of the americas or north american region, africa and CERTAIN european countries arent used to seeing black people at all so why WOULD it be worse compared to a country that has been taught how to be racist towards a specific race with no ignorancy coming into a play?
I actually had one of my best travel experiences in Italy. I stayed in a boutique hotel in Trastevere (a local neighborhood) while I was on vacation in Rome. One day, I returned to the hotel from a long day of sightseeing and went to the hotel restaurant to dine in before bed. The restaurant was packed with locals-it seems that particular night the restaurant becomes a neighborhood dining place. The server told me it would a long wait for a table and at least an hour before I could get room service. I left the restaurant and walked by the front desk heading to my room to order. The concierge (who always greeted me) wished me a good evening and asked was I enjoying my stay in Italy. I was and I mentioned I wished I could have had dinner in the restaurant but it was full and I told him what the server said. He immediately called the head server and told him to seat me. The server told him there were no tables left (that was true) and the concierge looked at him sternly and said "make a table available!". What happened next was crazy...They got a table from storage and set it up in a prime spot, dressed the table to the nines and gave me my own private server. The restaurant customers were looking at me like I was a VIP or something. I have never had that experience anywhere I have traveled and I have traveled through several countries. I stayed in Rome for two weeks and luckily, I had zero negatives experiences.

Thank you for this. I am a black woman that likes to travel solo and I have no desire to ever visit any of these countries alone or with a group. I do not go where i am not wanted or celebrated. There are 195 countries in the world so I have plenty of others to choose from. Thanks!

@@Bgs198 Dang! I would think that living life in that province of Canada would be terrific. Even if you’re a minority, I figured it may not be a hindrance. Guess I am mistaken. Most American people would safely assume Ottawa or Toronto was free of harsh discrimination/racist attitudes.

I live in Casablanca part of the year. My husband is Moroccan. I can 100% attest to Morocco being one of the most racist places I've ever been. I know that I am Black when I am in Morocco. I don't just feel like a person. I am a Black person. They treat me poorly until they find out I am American and then they want to try and knock me down a peg by demanding to know my original African country because they also don't believe that Black people are American. They also do not call theirselves African. They only refer to Black Africans as Africans. It's bizarre. I have been called the "N" word & their version of the "N" word, "3zia"; pronounced Ehzia (for a woman & Ehzi for a man) in an American accent. They do not respect women. Even women who are covered up. I have a friend who is a Niqabi; she talks about getting harassed when she goes outside sometimes. Mind you all you can see is her eyes when she goes outside because of her Niqab. I was coming from the Hammam (bathhouse) and I was wearing a hijab to project my wet hair from the elements and got harassed. It genuinely does not matter what you are wearing. There is just no respect for anyone except their own mothers maybe. I was getting out of a Taxi and a man asked me "Combien" which means "How Much" in French. You can guess what he was asking me. I told him to ask him momma. Don't even get me started on the men in Marrakech. And there is no reasoning with them. They are ignorant. This experience has made me realize that I can not live in a homogeneous country.

North Africa has been off my list for sometime because of what I heard and read. Ill take my chances. In West Africa and Kenya.
Well-said. BTW, where can a brother go to meet well-traveled, *open-minded* , educated black women? (not just "educated on paper" but actually have a naturally big vocabulary and an interest in learning new things, and aren't afraid to show these qualities publicly)?

You hit the nail on the head with China. I went in '96 and refuse to ever go back. Some people were nice but the ones that were rude went overboard to make me feel unwelcomed.

I went to China but I was only in the Airport. I was traveling to Thailand and layover was in China. I was alone and EVERYONE STARED AT ME and took pictures. Immigration was rude. And I felt like a animal. I can't imagine how I would have been treated once I left the airport
A colleague of mine had the exact experience you have described. She was with a tour group and the folks in China actually stopped and stared, making no efforts to be discreet. She said she felt like she was in a zoo and people did try to touch her hair. She stated that she will never go back.
Over 30 years ago I went to Japan and as I was visiting a palace, a Japanese woman tried to sneak up to my side for one of her cohorts to take my picture. I spun around smiled at her and put my arm around her shoulders and had one of my party take her picture. She was chagrined but I felt I justifiably turned the tables on her.
@@alitamarshall9244 They more than likely don't have the same boundaries of taking someone's picture without their permission like we have here in the states. I find it rude and disrespectful but for them it could be harmless. I will never step foot in China after they treated black people at the start of the pandemic.

@@alitamarshall9244 good one. I read on Instagram that a lady would touch someone else’s hair a little more aggressively after they would touch hers without permission. She said they always looked uncomfortable but maybe they would think twice about doing that to the next black person. I’m all for showing others exactly how uncomfortable they make us feel with their shenanigans.
Just left Italy last month and we believe we experienced racism about three times.
Been to quite a few countries solo and I have to admit Egypt has the potential to be very aggressive. I went to Egypt as part of my group tour with a boyfriend at the time. Even when I was with him, the Egyptians would joke that they want to smell my money (when we went to the bazaar). I didn’t feel any discrimination but I can agree they are very pushy there. Egypt is a very poor country despite being the mecca of civilization. If I were a solo traveler I would have been annoyed. Also bring your own toilet paper when you go because that country DOES NOT PLAY when it comes to toilet paper. I even had to create a hoarding situation because they were TIGHT with toilet paper.
I agree with the list, although I must say that I have not experienced negative actions in Italy but rather in the Italian neighborhoods here in New York City.

Italian neighborhoods in nyc is good training ground for how some folks will treat you in italy😳
So true. I avoid Italian communities in NYC due to racism. I lived in Florence 4 months and had a different experience.

Black italian here. Born in the north (Turin) but lived in Rome. Not much racism for me but I guess it exist somewhere
I travelled to Morocco with 4 friends and we got harassed a little. I definitely wouldn’t travel there alone.
Morocco was amazing, but I agree it’s better to go with others. The cat calling is surprisingly insane.

Dark skin Black american man, w/ long dreadlocks here. B4 the pandemic, I've solo travelled and backpacked through most the places on this list. I had a great time and yall will too. My advice is to remember when you leave USA you are entering into different cultural framework. Some people might come across as racist in our american framework but in their culture, they not trying to be offensive. Have fun exploring our beautiful world.
I think sometimes we forget that we are visiting "someone else's house" and the rules of engagement can be very different. Many countries I have visited take instant offense to anyone who doesn't try to speak their language or follow their customs.
100% agree. It sounds like many people in these comments are disappointed or offended that American cultural standards don't apply when they go abroad. There are racists everywhere, including your own hometowns.

I have traveled or lived in each of these places plus 54 others and never had issues. I do speak some of the local languages or have picked up enough to get along. As long as you respect the culture, do your research to understand dynamics of society and leave the US mentality of race above anything else, you will have a blast and meet tons of good people.

I actually took my first solo trip to Marrakech and it was absolutely amazing! I was there for 8 days and nothing crazy happened…a few cat calls and marriage proposals but other than that, all good . I think an important thing to remember when traveling to very culturally different destinations like Marrakech (For Americans especially) is to always be respectful of the culture and do your research. Before going, I learn a little Arabic (which the locals appreciated). I also made sure to wear clothing that fully covered my body. These little tidbits as well as just using your street smarts can take you a long way…Happy Travels All! ☺️
Well said, I have been to Morocco as a solo black woman, will I advise another woman to visit? sure use common sense, respect the culture, and learn the basics hello, no thanks, please, where, etc the locals appreciate it and it can take you a long way.

There is no way this Black female is going to a country where my gender, race, or whatever -ve mindset others have of me is going to get my tourism dollars. No matter how beautiful the place....

I had a bad experience as a black solo traveler in Barcelona. I would struggle to get served, call the server several times. I was treated funnily at a club. of course the negative was outweighed by the positive. It is a lovely city. What you said about Italy applies to Spain especially if you're african like me.

Funny thing is People from those countries visit and migrate to South Africa and some other Southern African countries,Moroccans and Egyptians wondering the streets selling pots and carpets.maybe it’s time we treat them the same way
Italy, Morocco, and Egypt are a few places I always wanted to go visit. I just have to be careful when I make my travel plans.

Morocco and Egypt is dangerous for all women no matter their race. I remember seeing a documentary about this. There is also a lot of sex trafficking too.
Very true. Americans must remember, in many 3rd world countries and probably 65% wordwide,, Women are considered beneath men. And many men get away with doing things to females. And the courts even side with them. So ladies, please travel in groups if you want to visit other countries outside of Canada and the USA.
I went to Morocco in 2014 with 4 friends and we felt safe during the day and night. We got harassed a few times in the same way I got harassed in Jamaica and Ghana a few times but it definitely didn’t feel dangerous in any way.
Italy is fine! I was in Florence for 3 months! Loved it and will go back this year for the Giro

I wasn’t traveling solo, but I loved Morocco! I didn’t feel any shade at all. The vendors were pushy, but I didn’t feel like it was racist. They were trying to hustle all of the tourists equally. lol
I did have an incident in Rome on public transit, but the woman was a German tourist, not an Italian national. The actual Italians were super cool.
I am prior military and have done my share of traveling, but a lot of these places never interested me to at all. I never wanted to go to India or China even Italy Morrocco is the only place I have considered as a travel destination.
As an African-American man I'm not interested in going to any of those places you just talked about as well as a great deal of countries you haven't even spoke of, a good Caribbean cruise will be quite sufficient for me.
We also need to explore Africa!!! It’s never even a remote thought. It’s always Europe or somewhere else.

This is disheartening as I wanted to visit each of those countries. I have been to Egypt with a group and did not feel that safe. It is frustrating how as a black traveler the world wants to close it's doors to you when all you want to do is experience something new and see places that you may have only seen on TV. Adding more stamps to your passport. It seems like black travelers all go to the same places. Basically Mexico and the Caribbean.
I just got back from Egypt in December. I traveled with a small group but also did alot of my own thing like going to the market etc. I did not like Cairo because it is dominated by young people and yes, I observed some disrespectful patterns. I did not personally feel disrespect, but I noticed it in general even with their own women. I loved Aswan and Luxor. Hoping to return to Aswan next October. So many Black people in Aswan that looked just like my uncles and aunties. Had the best time in Aswan.
@@robinsnestradio I enjoyed visiting all those parts of Egypt you mentioned when I visited. When I went I went with a large group so I felt pretty safe but sometimes I would go out on my own and then not as much.
This planet belongs as much to black people as it does to anyone else, so go, go and see it and enjoy it, and don't let anyone deny you that pleasure.
Don't be disheartened for all these 6-8 stories that are negative OMG there are so many positive memories to be made - traveling as a person - who is black. PLEASE know, and go! 😀 so people can have the blessing of knowing you in the world!

Tbh I’ve heard complaints from all races of women traveling in Morocco concerning harassment and crime.
I was in Italy in the late 90s and was poorly treated while trying to get in because I was coming from Africa,Kenya to be specific,and while I endured racism over there NOT all Italians are FLAMING racists as most people would love to believe most are actually super friendly...I was there for a full 6 months as a Tourist and other than a few bad experiences for the most part I also had a good time including travelling from one place to the next in those magnificent Italian Bullet trains from one town to the next,Biked over there and visited Rome,Venice,Milan,Turin,Verona,Trento in the North part of Italy where I stayed for the most part among many other towns and I would still love to visit again someday as I still met and interacted with very awesome Italians.

This list is spot on, but I'll like to take this issue a step further. I'm light skinned black and my wife is dark skinned. We're both Africans and have been to all the places mentioned. I have always received preferential treatment over her, despite her been really good looking. On the other hand, my only real contact with open racism has been with black Africans south of the Sahara. I have some unbelievable stories, from being called a filthy white and so on. Unfortunately, all colours are racist. How you personally to carry yourself is really what repels them.

I went to Morocco solo last year and had an AMAZING time!!!!..the place is full of Moroccans that are in every skin complexion from light to dark.Most people actually thought I was Moroccan(im fully black)..a few street vendors did call out a black celebrity to get my attention but literally that’s how they hustle your custom regardless of race they will always shout a celebrity or try and charm you.I found that everyone was good vibes out there and hospitality was A1!…I’m not saying everyone will have this experience but personally as a black man solo traveller I absolutely loved it and will be going back this year again

A fairly decent barometer of a culture's attitude towards you is how you're treated in communities that they are dominant in numbers here in America . Idiots are in all communities, but if racial disrespect is noticeable and common to those that have same background as you, be on alert .
The problem with this video is it's based upon other people's experience and there is no mention of how people presented themselves. I say this, because often times Americans show up very ignorant and do not try to learn about the country culture, people, and language. For example, I have seen many Americans while in Egypt, Morocco and other nstions where the population is predominantly Muslim and do not dress modestly. It's offensive to the local people and you will most definitely attract unwanted attention. China is a country that has over a billion people who look the same, so you should expect to stick out. I had a couple who wanted to take a picture with me and a white coworker had the same treatment because he was tall and red headed. I traveled on a sleeper train from Shanghai to Beijing by myself and had a wonderful experience. I traveled back on a bullet train and had an interesting conversation with a local person. I have traveled a lot of places on 5 of the 7 continents with no issue. People need to be mindful of where they are and don't complain when things are not like they are used to at home. Be safe wherever you go and that includes the US. Please include the US in one of your videos, because its one of the worst offenders based upon just being of African descent and pure hatred.

Northern Italy for sure from the Caribbean living in London now went to Italy solo to Milan, Pisa, Venice, Florence is beautiful don’t get me wrong!But the racism there next level! They won’t even sit next to me on a pack train,went to a restaurant which the hotel recommend to eat at just before I I get seated they ask if I had money to pay. 🤯
As an Indian, I don't recommend any blacks or whites to visit the country. If you're brown however you'll be fine.
Yes we have dark skin people in India, darker than even Africans. But you can tell by a persons features like nose, eyes and ears that they are African.

I love Italy, was there in 2017 and I loved it especially my favorite place Florence. But dang I experienced racism there, even though I was in a group.It was isolated in a boat probably faced a racist employee that day so I will probably go back. I did a Euro tour and travelled to a few other countries it was okay all around. I have also been to a few Asian countries and most of them are like how you explained China . In Thailand, I went to a pharmacy and the lady directed me to whitening products before she even asked what I wanted (I wanted allergy medication). But the best place I have been out of sub Saharan Afrika is Singapore. Been there twice and no uncomfortableness or stares.

I spent about 5 weeks in Pune, India for work in February 2020. I agree with everything shared in the video. People stared at me, wanted to take pictures of me; thankfully no one touched my hair which was in mini twists 😱. The best experiences I had when I was with a Latinx coworker who passed for Indian, and they didn't give him a hard time at all. Outside of hanging with my coworker, I tried not to go to too many places by myself for safety reasons.
Went to northern italy and i swear it is a one and done for me🧐
I have been to Egypt and central/southern Italy. I am male and cannot speak on sexual harassment. In Italy neither my wife nor I felt any racism. I'm predominantly West African-looking and she is mixed/biracial West African + Central European looking. In Egypt, we perceived some sub-par service in some hotels compared to whites. My wife perceived flirting when I was absent from a space. I'd say we've heard stupider things come from random Kenyans and black South Africans, so I wouldn't call the society racist. Our overall negative experience in Egypt had more to do with service.
maybe the experiences as a couple are not the same as for a solo traveller
Even in the states, I always travel with good family or good friends or a romantic partner
since this pandemic, things have changed but people are starting to go out again & travel, which is a good sign, slowly but surely life, some sort of normal life is coming together

The only place on this list for me was China. Went there a dozen times for business trips. Shanghai was ok few people stared. But when I was in the smaller cities Large groups of people would stare, laugh and point at me eating dinner or walking around in a store. Immigration threw my passport at me a few times when I was leaving. Made me mad i I wanted to do something but common sense told me don't go to a Chinese jail get on the plane and go home.

@@charreese8180 I ended up in detention in a Beijing police station. They kept me in there for a day before my employer got me out.

I had racists experiences in Dublin, Ireland and Prague in the Czech Republic as a solo traveler. Also, Cairo is a bad place to go as a single black woman. Even completely covered, you are hararred, ostracized, not respected. Would not go back.

I agree Eastern Europeans tend to be very racist towards blacks, there's no way I would travel to Eastern Europe as a black person, I wouldn't feel safe, and I don't want any unpleasant experiences.

It’s beyond words that this happens anywhere in this day and time.That really says a lot about what race is the least racist. I've traveled the world when I was on active duty, so I really have no desire to leave my country to travel to any of the countries mentioned. The mention of people in China wanting to touch your hair (if you're black) reminded me of when I was stationed in Korea decades ago. I didn't take it as a sign of disrespect, but more of curiosity. In countries where everyone looks the same, we might want to give them a pass on that one. I did have a experience in Dakar (Africa) where a restaurant owner acted like he didn't want to serve me and another female black crew member that was with our group. Yep, ignorance is everywhere. Life goes on...

It's interesting how every time black people make content about discrimination, there is always a seemingly "innocent" comment by a non-black person about how everyone is racist towards each other because that one time 1 person was rude to them. They are quick to equate being called a Monkey to bad service at a restaurant...Just an observation.
@@morrisgreen6863 Well I too went to Dakar and got terrible service from a black waiter who was unpleasant to me and my friend who lived in Dakar at the time but was all smiles and good service to the white people in the restaurant. Yea even in black countries you can still get F-up treatment because they are use to serving whites.

This just goes to show show that the so called people in control have are always trying to control what we have to say, and even how we say it. We have to create, and control our social media platforms, and if that doesn't work work just go all out and create our own networks.
I lived in Puebla Mexico for 3.5 years, from 2013 to 2016 and it was a nightmare. Some people were very nice, but there was so much ignorance there because that part of Mexico, they don't see many blacks. Some people would laugh right in my face and would not care that I could see them laughing at me. I felt like a zoo animal. They have this thing there, where if they see a black person, they have to pinch the person they're with and they would do this every day when I would walk places. I felt so miserable there, some days I would just stay inside. By the time I left, I was drained from having to swear at people so much
That is so interesting because I visited Mexico City and loved it, but I found it too busy. I plan on relocating to Mexico next year and added Puebla to my shortlist...Now I'm seriously reconsidering it. Any parts of central Mexico you would recommend?
@@TheVenicemcfolio are you black? darker skinned too? visiting a place is not the same as living there. when you become more immersed, work there, go to school there, try to date/marry someone, socialize, that's when you really see it. also, indigenous people will be nicer to black people than mestizo/white people.

Thing is, there are Black people in all races and they're treated terrible. There are Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Brazilians darker than us and still have the nerve to believe they're better. I,ll take the racism here. Why travel for it.

I've done vacations in Madrid and Barcelona. Barcelona was fantastic, Madrid not so much. Definitely felt a difference from how I was treated from other spaniards in Madrid. But I spoke with a South American that lived and worked there and his experience was the same. So was it really racism or nationalism?

I think it’s also important to note that travelers often forget to dress the way of the countries they are visiting. In any Muslim country, always dress on the conservative side. Some orthodox countries have the same vibe so respect the culture to avoid some problems. Rather than traveling solo, travel with a group designed for solo travelers.
As black women we are still harassed in Muslim countries no matter how conservatively we are dressed. I wore a niqab in Saudi Arabia and was harassed when walking the streets during the day.
I will never return to Egypt they were aggressive, physically touched me, was targeted in the airport etc. I loved to see it but never again.
Generally people are nice everywhere. But some incidents can turn you off. I remember being stopped by police twice in Italy. I was travelling with two other friends. I have darker complexion than my two friends and we are all from the same country. On both occassions the police insisted on seeing my passport alone.
All these 5 countries doesn't care if you're black person from Africa or America as soon as you are a black person is enough I made the mistake of traveling to Milan Italy in 2018 as a solo travel I lost my return flight because I was not able to get a taxi all of the drive were refused to take my to the airport and I couldn't even get an hotel room has to walk to a 6 or 8 different hotel before you find one that will allowed you to stay horrible experience.
I have been to Italy and have been targeted for being a black American which we know equals rich right. Outside of Rome I felt safe including Venice. Italy’s male dominant culture looks down on single women in general although their rates of marriage is plummeting also. Pickpockets are rampant in Europe so act accordingly. Africans can really be treated poorly as though they are trash. I purchased things from them just because of what I witnessed. Egypt and Morocco do not surprise me as their religious culture forbids single men contact with women and if you don’t dress modestly women can have even more problems with harassment. With all travel, do your research so that you have an idea of what to expect.
And my attitude is why even bother with go to those places spending your damn money with these people and for what, to experience the same thing that you will experience from right here in America that all people made up the good the bad the ugly and the indifference; because all people are the same everywhere.

I went to jail for fighting with a fruit vendor that tried to cheat me then poking me in the chest repeatedly... 4 days in a cell with a dirt floor and 2 inches of water with only a bucket to piss in. Lots of mosquitoes... Another was escaping a mob in Surigao working for a pimp that tried to set me up with a slut that looked older than my grandmother. I don't know how I wiggled out of that one but I got slashed pretty deep on my right rib cage. Had to get two layers of stitches... still got the scar... chicks dig scars... well... they did, I'm not cute anymore and I just turned 69. There's more but... mmmm... those two memories make me smile the most... I met some reeeally great local people too along the way that shared their house and food with me too... memories you don't get on Carnival Cruise Lines.... 😂😂

It all boils down to people wanting to feel better about themselves by looking down on and mistreating others...if you're truly secure about who or what you are as a person or a people, you wouldn't feel the need to mistreat others...so when you do things like this it only exposes your insecurities about you or your own race.

I visited Egypt with my mom and sister. It was the best experience ever. They welcomed us and made comments like welcome home Beautiful African Queens

@Neil Omari Springle. I think it was genuine because they didn’t ask for anything, (monies). We did a non tourist carriage tour into their neighborhoods and the little kids were calling us cousins. When my sister asked them why the call us that, they said because we were brown like them.
Looking forward to visiting Egypt next year. Heard nothing but positive things from my friends and family who have visited.
