This is now second best film of all time! Number 1 still being Pulp Fiction. So many people did not understand this film at all, it went beyond people’s heads, and when you try to explain what it was all about people get overwhelmed! The whole movie is taking you through the mind of a psychopath, we see Jack’s thoughts, his visions, what’s going through his head etc. something that has never been done before. The whole movie is told through his thought process and his view on life, art etc. What makes it even more interesting is that he’s having constant talks, disagreements with his conscience (Verge played by Bruno Ganz.) But really he is fighting with himself. He’s evolving and devolving at the same time. So many people also missed out or forgot that 25% of this film is a satirical comedy. The ending also got so many people confused. Remember, it’s the mind of a psychopath, the whole segment of Jack going through hell was him dying (been shot by the cops) and having visions of going through hell and trying to get out of there so he can live! It made sense to me, and to me an original, magnificent piece of cinema and art, but unfortunately you may hate it!
Except Verge's conversations all happen at the end. Jack is basically recounting his life to Verge, so saying he's "evolving" from these talks with Verge is kind of wrong, since his time to evolve has ended. Jack never really questions himself until he sees the reaping people with the scythes (forget what they're called) in hell, and that wasn't even really bc of Verge.
Maybe not with a psychopath yet, but this type of film has indeed been done before, like in Tarkovsky's (superior) film, The Mirror, which unravels as a stream of consciousness narrative of a dying poet. I myself loved The House that Jack Built, but I think most people who criticized it understood what you explained. It's extremely violent, and in the end not very rewarding. I learned little from it.
@@thanosthanos3801 I think the movie is Satirical, and after hearing about how disgusting it was, and how Cannes people left the theatre I was expecting a full on dramatic, horror film, but what I wasn't expecting was a satirical comedy. I had no idea it as going to be as funny as it was. So the movie is based on satire, and every character here (except Jack, despite being so sloppy and literally begging to be caught) is dumb, and society not even knowing or caring. It wasn't until the very end that Jack was finnsly caught, however it was for something he never did, which I thought added to the comedy satire. I got where Lars Von Trier was going in regards to the ending, it was "actions have consequences" kind of ending, and then adding a comedy element of "Hit The Road Jack." As you said up above, there is definitely a poet reference here, but I feel like Lars avoided walking into the cliches, and worked his way around it and created something very original, and something I've never seen before. The Academy snubs its nose at Lars, which is a damn shame.
this will not be the one lmao, do you know anything about the Oscars? movies like this don't win.
Debatable
Well, Pat Healy finally becomes a murderer after Mary chose Ted instead him in the movie There's Something About Mary.

This was pretty disturbing and upsetting, I dont understand why the ratings are so low. Just because something is provocative doesnt mean its bad. Verge being the canary that makes this movie’s message follow through and not be hypocritical.
there was a beauty to the film throughout like a great ancient tale
