This interview follows a similar structure as most of lars's films: Our protagonist makes a particularly bad decision, disturbing those in the audience while setting the tone for the downward spiral to follow for the remainder of the runtime until eventually they fall too far down the spiral and forces outside of their control put an end to it
That has to be the greatest train wreck I've ever seen. It manages to push all the wrong buttons while being utterly incomprehensible. Everyone around him looks so uncomfortable.
@@turkishjanitor3666 I hate the fact the "edgy phase" always includes being a Nazi. No one would ever accept someone saying, "I supported pedophilia in my edgy phase." But we're all fine and dandy when someone says "I supported Hitler in my edgy phase even though he killed millions of kids."
I feel bad for Lars. The delivery is off but this is very typical Danish use of irony and sarcasm, which is common allover Scandinavia. You can see Stellan actually understands what Lars is trying to do and finds it funny. But It's a kind of comedy that doesn't go over well on most foreign territories 😅
@@sonrisolprarebater As I said, he didn't delivers it very well 😅 But yes, Danish humor is the worst to many foreigners, and I don't blame anybody because it is very strange. Basically, it's all about saying stuff that you don't mean. And people understand that you don't mean it. So it's probably a cultural thing. Mads Mikkelsen did a bunch of very dark comedies in the 2000s, which explains it very well 🙈
@Sigurd Shvedov It's a cultural thing in Scandinavia. We can say anything because people know we don't mean it. If you say "Okay, I am a Nazi" then you say it in a sarcastic way like Lars did here, and you know that it's just dark sarcasm. This is probably the funniest video on UA-cam. His awkwardness and the way people don't get he's joking are very relatable for me. The way he tries to get his point across without being proficient enough at the English language and eventually gives up, accepting his ruined reputation, is the funniest thing in the universe because I could easily imagine myself being in such a situation.

I love the way Stellan Skarsgard leans in about half way through Lars digs himself into a hole. It's as if he's saying 'Yep, keep going. This'll be good.'
I was kinda holding it with a lot of questionning during the main part - I wasn't sure if he was honestly and very clumsily trying to make a point of his interest in nazis, or if he was just honestly and shockingly revealing himslef to be one, or if this was just a terrible joke - until he replied to the second question: "on a greater scale..." the way he says this and the pauses he makes just after... there I saw it coming and thought "ok he's just completely crazy, that's a joke, and don't you dare Lars pursuing with that 'Greater Scale' reference..." He did it and i burst out loud, even more when he finished the interview by digging to the maximum level of incongruity, emphasising on the "FINAL SOLUTION... with journalists..." So edgy, but jeez I cracked up XD
IKR?? His movies are pretty grim, but he never fails to make me laugh at least a couple of times per movie. Each movie. And I laugh really rarely in my normal life, I laugh only like once in 6 months or smth lol I do need to find a person with von Trier's sense of humor.
it's classical danish dark humour and a lot of foreigners don't get it. especially if you're not that fluent in english, or other languages than danish.
I don't think there's an actual kind of danish dark humour. As there isn't a mexican dark humour or any other nation's dark humour. There's just people who get those jokes and people who don't. I don't believe that affinity to dark jokes is driven by the place you were born or the culture you grew with.
Ye but dark humor is not always appropriate. He was talking during a Festival, in Cannes, in France, one of the first countries occupied by nazis. During Second World War one part of France was collaborating with Hitler, and it' s not something that they are really proud of. To mention lars ," I understand " french people.

That is my view, I do not expect everyone to share it. I see your point and I do agree that according to our current moral standards it is not ok. However these standards are not applied equally, therefore in my eyes they are worthless. A person declaring with grave seriousness that he is a communist will face nowhere near the consequences a Nazi joke would bring you. Given this I'd much rather see full abolition of judgement of speech and beliefs against the double standard that exists currently. On a side note, moral is subjective. What is immoral in Europe is moral in Africa and vice versa for example. Another great example of the moral double standard. The explanation is plain simple, people confuse moral with the dominant political views.

I feel bad for Lars. The delivery is off but this is very typical Danish use of irony and sarcasm, which is common allover Scandinavia.
If you say "Okay, I am a Nazi" then you say it in a sarcastic way like Lars did here, and you know that it's just dark sarcasm. it's classical danish dark humour and a lot of foreigners don't get it. especially if you're not that fluent in english, or other languages than danish.
