Like most big men, the talent and effectiveness of a big man can go away almost overnight without warning on the pro level. I think we all got spoiled with watching big men like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and other great centers do their thing for a long time and remain great. Those guys were studs at the five spot. But the majority of big men are like hot rods. They have to either maintain themselves really well year in and year out. Because if they don't and injuries pile up, a big man's effectiveness is immediately shot.

Vogel was a great coach for the Pacers at the time. He was a players coach who they always played hard for, and his defensive schemes were masterful. His offensive strategy was limited but his biggest flaws were his late game play calling and his substitution rotations. The Pacers would completely outplay the Heat at times in the series but the bench would go through long stretches of terrible offense. Those 3 years were some of my favorite teams, they brought it almost every night. In the end, the downfall was 1. Lebron 2. Soft Egos 3. Lebron 4. Lebron

Vogel's system: Half the offense, DOUBLE THE DEFENSE
D'Antoni's systeam: Half the defesne, DOUBLE THE DEFENSE
Conclusion: YOU CAN'T WIN IF YOU EMPHASIZE ON ONE END OF THE FLOOR (there are some exceptions though-04 Pistons)

Thank you for understanding that the Pacers would not of used their pick for another forward. At the time their only back court players were Lance and Darren Collison. They had plenty of forwards at the time, it wouldn't of made sense to add another.

One thing I've realizing in watching basketball games is all about executing in the moment. All 82 games in the NBA regular season, plus in the playoffs, are all independent events. Being #1 means jack sqaut. Your favorite team can go 63-19, then lose in the first round. From a coaching perspective, you have to have a very analytical mind and point out the flaws of the offense and defense of whatever team your coaching and the opposing team. From a player standpoint, you need to have a lock-in focus on every possession and play along with smart decision making skills. So in the end, both player and coach are responsible for the team's success or failure

It sounds funny now a days: Roy Hibbert a star. Danny Granger being a star. Lance stephenson playing well and not being the star of Shaqring a fool.
I remember these times so vividly, but it seems so long ago now.

We were obsessed with George Hill. I loved him when he was here. We're in good shape now with Oladipo so. If Danny Granger never got hurt we probably would've done it and/or if we kept the Kawhi Leonard pick.

Can we just call it the “Blue Collar, Gold Swagger” era because as a Pacers fan, there’s a way to leave a team and way not to: George is a great example of what not to do (I.E. him leaking his trade demand to the press because “I don’t want to play with a bunch of nobodies” then being surprised that Indiana fans still don’t like him)

The Pacers had a chance until all the rumors started flying around in 2014. I had season tickets, watched them go from having the greatest chemistry to the complete opposite. Along with Roy Hibbert being nowhere seen on the stat sheet. 0 rebounds?? Man I'm starting to get in my feels

The truth is they had a legit contending team that was good enough to win a title. But they just got unlucky they ran into lebron in his prime. They were a pretty good team at the time with alot of good pieces. Lebron was just that damn good during that time. He was unreal in that nba finals when kyrie and love were down.

With Griezmann now at Barcelona, the club won't have enough funds to bring Neymar outright. They have to sell Dembele, Coutinho, and Rakitic to make it happen.
Then again, I'm satisfied with Griezmann taking over Suarez's spot in the foreseeable future.

  • @rcreed77

I think I remember from game 2 of the 2013 ECFs or the year before when Paul George had his break out game in the 3rd. quarter. PG went off, threw down two monster dunks (I think one of them was within LBJ's vicinity). After the end of the 3rd. quarter, LBJ went over and congratulated PG. Although Indiana won that game, I felt that PG should have ignored the gesture. I liked how the Greek Freak - Giannis Antetokounmpo preferred not to attend one of LBJ's summer practices one year. Because sometimes I think great players like LBJ glean and learn from his opponents by being gracious at times by inviting them to play with him at these pick up games.

Very few players in the NBA carried a team like paul george with the pacers. I can only think of, LeBron carrying the cavs in his first stint best of all is Kawhi with raptors and kobe with the Lakers. But very few single players have carried sorry ass teams to a conf finals or further.
