08-09 was rather impressive, he really seemed to be a much more overall player that year, although I think Billups on the team was the main reason the nuggets went to the west finals, melo really grew that year. I thought if he kept that up he would truly be ELITE
Easily the '08-'09 season, if we're talking team play and being unselfish, when he was in the best shape of his life (up until that point of his career) coming off playing on that Redeem Team '08 Olympics where he balled out and had Chauncy Billups in his ear all summer and season long about doing things a certain way. I don't really count his Knicks seasons after '13 since the Knicks were so bad.
I think he was a willing passer it’s just his teammates weren’t that great, especially in NY. Watching the games his teammates would miss bunnies and open shots when he passed the ball all the time. Take note, when Melo and Amare played together he averaged the most assists to Amare out of EVERYONE on the team
His lack of assist has more to due with his play style. Players like LeBron drive to the rim and draw help defenders which allows teammates to get open. But someone like melo relies more on midrange shots where he only had to shoot over one guy and the defense can still cover the other players

Actually, he it is the best. He has so many trophies and records. The only player who played with passion every game with USA. Everybody else had/have holidays mood.
Who cares about being the best player o the Olympic team? Yeah that year Melo “balled out” (2016) he came off the bench playing against for the most part non NBA second lineups lol (not even starting). The only reason Melo has an impressive Olympic record is because he knew he would never accomplish anything on the NBA stage but wants to be relevant on conversation. Nobody plays 4 Olympics, except desperate people. I mean you gotta look good when you are playing up against some 6’3 BACKUP SF who is probably playing in the biggest game of his life... Overrated... his best years were with Syracuse...
@@floyd9727 Hahahaha. Dude, Melo balls out for team USA for more than a decade. You are either too ingorant or too young. There is something called pride and honour. Americans don't give a fuck about their national team, when every other player in the world dreams of playing with his national team because it's the biggest honour to represent your country. It's not pathetic nor desperate to play for your own country. Also, Melo till 2016-2017 was dropping 20+ points every season of his career. In his best seasons he averaged 28ppg. In his last season in NY he averaged 22.5, not bad at all. It's not his fault that the Knicks organisation didn't surround him to with proper pieces. Allen Iverson played for bas teams and he was one man team, nobody criticizes him. If you think that Melo was in his prime when he was 17, then you haven't watched actual prime Melo from 2005 to 2013. Melo is a HOF and I give him the biggest respect for representing his country in every tournament, unlike the other guys who are too afraid and pathetic for not wanting to represent their country. It's only an American thing. It only happens with team USA, where it's own players don't want to play
Kush Berry lol his greatest accomplishment in the NBA was getting his one scoring title, in which he was the only player since the start of the millennium to get a scoring title and not break 30 points by the way something he never did In his career. Every other player is that won a scoring title was able to break 30 EXCEPT MELO, and he on top of that, he never did shit in the playoffs. One western conference final on a stacked Denver Nuggets squad lead by Chauncey Billups and coached by the coach of the year George Karl. After that he goes on to play for the Knicks in the Leastern conference (also crippling the franchise the Knicks with his massively huge contract which prevented him from getting any help) , in which he accomplished his one scoring title in which he lead his team made the playoffs only to be knocked out of the first round. Melo did nothing in his career on his own and reflected no leadership at any point of his NBA career. In my opinion certain awards don’t mean any thing. ALL Star awards (it’s fan picked and doesn’t reflect the whole season), USA Olympic Gold (any other country it’s different like when Argentina won it in 2004) If its USA all you really have to do is Go and you get a gold medal for the most part. The only things that matter to me when evaluating a player is MVPs (Melo 0), Scoring titles (1 in which he was the weakest in the past 20 years to win not breaking 30 ppg) All NBA defense (Melo 0) All NBA (Melo made all NBA Second team twice, and all NBA 3rd team 4 times) *never once was he one of the best 5 players in the league in his entire career* NBA championship (0). or leading the league in any other stat other than scoring either all time or season (0). Yes Melo will make the NBA ball of fame because of his excellent NCAA performance at Syracuse, and because of his technical most gold medals. Guess he knew he wasn’t going to achieve anything like a championship or an MVP in the NBA so night as well get his name in the record books in some way... funny you know why most player top tier players don’t play on the olympics every single time? Most of the time it’s because they are recovering from either an exhaustive playoff (something Melo only experienced once in Denver), or because they are tired of winning in the olympics and they want to let the younger players go and make their mark. Melo had no mark so this was his only way to create something memorable about him... another thing, did you know that Carmelo Anthony has the WORST PLAYOFF WINNING PERCENTAGE IN NBA HISTORY in terms of players with 50 or more playoff games 16-36 (.308 both Denver and New York)? oh and don’t bring up Iverson. That man actually took his team to a finals BY HIMSELF, got multiple scoring titles (4) (while breaking 30ppg) was an MVP, was a 3 time steal champion, and Rookie of the year and made the all NBA first team 3 times. The comparison of Iverson the Melo isn’t even close and you should be ashamed of yourself for even bringing up them up in the same sentence unless saying the played together... I’m done with this argument, I’ll state it again OVERRATED! Weakest playoff player of all time in terms of winning in NBA playoffs lol!
Hell I'm born in 2004 and I believe Kirlenko is SO damn underrated. I love his defensive motor, and arguably the best defender who hasn't won a D.P.O.Y..... Also Him, Deron Williams, and Memo Okur were killin it in Utah!

He probably could have been the best player on the times he went to the Nuggets, but he basically went the Superstar status of not willing to adapt, not coming off the bench, and of course, his ego pretty much came in as well.
@@daffaridho284 I think they wanted to use like that KD, Westbrook, Harden combo? But Melo didn't want that coming off the bench Portland is just playing Iso ball, pretty much. New York would have had more successful if the locker room wasn't so cancerous.

@@Rukhasu in that kind of team, he dont got to defend lolol, when you got sheed wallace, rip hamilton, and ben wallace on defense, you dont need to play defense. He couldve been straight offence for the pistons , nothing else, just get buckets and let the team play defense for you. That's what that pistons team never had, that dynamic offensive threat. Like melo.
Excellent video once again, Mr. Hoops. A deep dive into a very polarizing player. You summed everything up and still, I can't decide on how truly good Melo was. If he could've accepted his role with OKC/HOU and been a true stretch 4 off the bench, I think the public would feel differently about him. I know I sure would. Great video again, mate.
If Melo had played in a system like he did in Syracuse, he would probably have achieved more. Back in Cuse he was like Larry Bird, passing the ball, making clutch shots, relentless defending and chasing rebounds but in the NBA he came in already the first option, didn’t play in a well established system and throughout his career he didn’t have a coach that could just humble him, he just didn’t humble himself that’s why I wish he had gotten drafted by the Pistons, he would be a role player for a little while but he would eventually become a greater player like he was in Cuse, it would be like how Kawhi Leonard is now, Melo would be hungrier for more championships.
So was he really a great player? No. Good player yes. Great? No. Great players would have done more in their careers with the amount of talent he played with, the great coaches hes played with, the great organizations hes played with, etc. He greatly underachieved in his NBA career.
@@HaveFunLosingBro it's tough for me to say that he's "greatly underachieved" in his NBA career when you look at his entire resume. He's a 1st ballot hall of famer so there's no way I can categorize that as a great underchievement. I think he underachieved as a leader and winner because he had opportunities to put winning ahead of his own selfishness and immaturity and he didn't/couldn't. He should've modeled what Paul Pierce did who got similar crticisms earlier in his career then began to change his game, which made his transition when they got KG/Allen that much easier. As a result, he's remembered as a winner and clutch player. Melo isn't.
Doesnt change the numbers... greatness is determined by what you accomplish in pressured moments. Melos career is pretty much TMac 2.0 without the injury 🤔
North Gaming no but a kid facing the greatest spurs team and a championship laker team before he was even allowed to legally drink has to go some where in the story ...
@@JWoogieraps yea he lost... what fid he accomplish after is my question. MJ couldnt get past the pistons until he did. Dirk got revenge on the same team that stole his first ring. If he wasnt ready to grow into a true championship leader with in 3 years he shouldve stayed in college longer. He was never gonna be an NBA champ, he made as many bad decisions in his career as both hia team during his prime
@@JWoogieraps also i dont understand why you said "no but"... a question wasnt asked unless youre saying greatness is determined by something elseand if so please elaborate
North Gaming greatness is more than rings , look at how his teammates speak of him , they all love him , look at all the great battles and moments he gave us
I don't hate Carmelo Anthony but the one thing that always sticks out to me is how he wanted the spotlight. For example he had a talented Jeremy Lin that was his teammate and when Linsanity began he got so mad cause his teammate took the spotlight. His playstyle is not fun to watch either. I would've loved if he played well when he came to the Oklahoma City Thunder so we could win a championship.
@@TrevForPresidentwhat second round? Tmac never been to the second round apart from 09 when he missed it from injury, and his last season as a bench warmer on the spurs
His weaknesses aren't actually weaknesses. He can dish 10 assists if he wanted to. He can play solid D if he wanted to. The only problem is, he's not willing to do so.
All right a Carmelo Anthony video , this is pretty good , considering Andy you are a knicks fan , but yeah prime Melo was amazing tho , one of the prolific scorers in the NBA during those days in Denver and early parts of NY

You people hurt Melos career by not making him face reality & now its too late.
That 08-09 Nuggets team was stacked. I bet money if they didn’t have to face Kobe and the Lakers that year, Melo would’ve won his first ring. The Magic were not beating that Nuggets team. Period
North Gaming Chauncy was the point guard & the vet ofcourse he had a substantial impact but take away melo and there was nothing to even speak about . Melo is the guy that u give the ball to and get a bucket whenever wherever that is your best player .
@@TallerDanDMan again talent wise yes without doubt. The video just showed you win shares he hardly as an impact. Obviously not the only stat but take Chauncey off that team you and all you got is a bunch of young guys chasing stats. Basketball involves 9 people coming together cohesively. 04 pistons for example. Not one player was a melo type player but won a ring and couldve won a second. Also only one player in history whos made a whole career of hitting big shots in big moments. Game on the line in the playoffs id rather Big Shot on the court with ball than melo, thats just facts
AJ Pippin Chauncey Billups had his career high in PPG when he was in Denver at age 38! That’s incredible considering Melo took majority of the shots. CB brought with him championship experience and was the Floor General of that team. So delusional no! Debatable yes.
Came back here after the hearing the news of Melo announcing his retirement? Anyone else present here? He's a surefire first ballot Hall of Famer undoubtedly despite the lack of Playoff success or let alone the lack of championship.
I’ll never understand how Melo has the stigma of a “loser” cuz he never won a ring meanwhile Steve Nash who always played with super stacked teams yet never won a chip doesn’t get treated like a loser. And Melo’s stats are way better than Nash
Killmonger 26 No.. He was the Great White Hype. An’toni system makes any point guard or Prime ball handler look legendary. Nash doesn’t even play half the defense Melo did and gets no flack for being defensively challenged. Nash was coated with teflon to them white boys.
Leo Kizzo Naw, Nash actually takes it slightly worse since aside from the fact that many fans discredit his two MVPs (unfairly at that), they even use his ethnicity as the reason for winning MVP (which is rather bullshit considering that the NBA has NEVER had a bias against players of their race). They're both equally disrespected though.
When you hear those.... wait a highlight of Melo Heso Melo a 3 to win the game? Well, thanks Andy for another masterpiece Edit: Thanks for the heart Andy
You can easily argue that Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Kareem, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, George Gervin, Alex English, James Harden, Shaq, Hakeem, AI maybe even Bob McAdoo were better scorers than him. Melo is low top 10 or mid top 20.
@@Tom-eq7eh he has a near equal scoring average to every person on that list except lebron, m.j., wilt, and Iverson. So as a scorer he certainly flirts with top-10 all time. Although if we brought up kobe, dominique, and Karl Malone then Carmelo falls out of that top 10 for sure.
They were pretty dominant in the East, going to the ECF 6 years in a row with 2 consecutive Finals Appearances. They had a better run than the 2008 Celtics squad to say the least.
Stormstriker Yeah but winning is more important I think he would have played well on the Bulls. In 2015 that team could have won it all that yr. they damn near had a 3-1 lead over the Cavs.
If he would have sacrificed at the beginning in new York. Sign as a free agent which he would have a better team... better chance to win. You win in new York it will make you a lot more than you lost in the haircut. Ask any Yankee star who has won! Or walt Frazier still living off that success!

Melo as a leader really reminds me of current Kyrie. Still some key differences but it does kind of make sense. A great player but can’t take a full leading role and is better as a second option
Ding ding. That's the key. Harden, melo , players like that don't get rings. Even Dirk had special defensive specialists team that got a Heat team before they were hitting their stride. To get Dirk the one ring. It takes that 4 a wing players who isn't a impact on both sides of court like Lebron, Kawhi, Jordan and pippen. Bird.
I feel like if melo went to another team like the celtics he would have won a ring, but my mans stayed on the knicks in his prime. Mad respect for loyalty.

The intro. I remember that shot. Leading up to it the media was saying Melo shoots to much and was inefficient. After hitting the shot walking down the court he was saying “ who shoot too much ?”
If The pistons would have drafted Melo his career would have been much better and he would have a ring. That veteran leadership and focus on defense is exactly what Melo needed in his career.
@@gavin7841 Not even scoring KD has always been a guy that averages between 25 to 30 points per game since his second season. I’m surprised Melo’s Olympic resume wasn’t mentioned here. Pretty historic
Kush Berry Let him be, I think he’s hurt.
I'm from Denver and I remember when the nuggets drafted him. People were actually naming their new babies after him.
U know any Carmelos?

Excellent video once again, Mr. Hoops. A deep dive into a very polarizing player. You summed everything up and still, I can't decide on how truly good Melo was. If he could've accepted his role with OKC/HOU and been a true stretch 4 off the bench, I think the public would feel differently about him. I know I sure would.
Great video again, mate.
My favorite player finally
Bro before I even watch this. Melo was really good, great in his prime
Carmel Anthony is still top 15 sf in NBA and he was in prime with Knicks and last season with nuggets
He was definitely a great player but he made his teammates worse
Yea

All im saying is Melo was a great 2nd or 3rd tier player (not a championship team but in the overall outlook of NBA history).
His offensive toolset was incredible. His career reminds me of Tracy McGrady’s with efficient, heavy iso without signature playoff clutch factor.
@Milestonecomics Tracy McGrady had some gems in the first and second round, too. I still think it's a good comparison.
