  • Will the all-new 2024 Land Cruiser and 2024 Lexus GX have high quality of manufacturing and reliability as the older, previous generation 2023 models? Would these new models match or exceed the unbeatable level of quality reached by the current 2023 Lexus GX 460? Automotive Engineer David Chao answers this very important question by predicting the quality and long term reliability of the two most important 2024 SUVs: Toyota Land Cruiser & Lexus GX 550. Watch the entire video as David explains step by step exactly how he believes the quality will be maintained by the legendary Tahara factory where the new 2024s are being built.

I've owned GX's for 17 years. The reason is what you've expressed so many times in your videos. As much as I'd like to jump on the new GX, all models go through a real world proving out and reliability crucible. Yeah, I believe like you do, that the Toyota plant will build an exceptionally high quality vehicle, I know that that's not enough. I will force myself to sit on the sidelines until real world experience shows what works and what needs tweaking before I jump on board. Please keep up the great work!

I’m in the same boat. I’m going to wait another 2-3 years before I possibly shell out the $$ for the new GX. It is very tempting though… haha

@peterjones5777 nearly identical to my thought process in choosing to purchase a new 23' V8 6 speed auto GX, it's the last model year of the current run, which, in my experience of purchasing way too many new automobiles in life, a disease that I cannot overcome, lol, the last model year has typically been the most refined and reliable. While the new Twin Turbo V6 may prove reliable in the new GX550, the same cannot be said for the same engine in the Tundra when it was released, which was plagued with blown passenger side turbos. The issue was so widespread, Toyota ordered a Stop-Sale on Tundra sales. Before I outlay the coin for a GX550, it'll be a few model years, and that's only if I'm bored of my 460.

    • @miller1
      @miller1 11 місяців тому

Of course, that's just common sense. Look at the new gen Tundra problems for example.
Even David's "New Model Buying Decision Matrix" disagrees to buy new design in the first year of production...

I still own an early 2000 Tundra with 275k. It was manufactured in June of '99 and on the road in August of that year. Most of the first year QC issues were fixed by Toyota.
It's quality overall is better than any domestic I've seen, but noticeably lower than my GX.

Thanks for this David! I’m on a Calgary Dealership’s list for one of the first Land Cruisers to “land” in YYC next Spring…and according to the Manager… I’m near the top! Having owned several Toyota’s and Lexus’ since my very first in 1972, I’m very excited! I’m also very thankful there will be no “price adjustment” over MSRP! I am not concerned about the reliability of the 4 cylinder Hybrid Turbo….Toyota has never let me down!

Thank you David as usual very informative. In my opinion, however, Aluminum/Turbo&Electric combo are not as durable as steel/V8. Therefore, I would not think of buying the new GX/LC250 until after 1st facelift when hopefully any quality issues are ironed out.

This. And the fact that Toyota has been making Turbo engines since the 80s.
The hybrid-turbo system in the LC250 is made so that the hybrid does most or half of the low end work, putting less stress on the engine itself. It’s made in Japan too. It will be fine.

Toyota has been making turbo engines since the 80s. Adding a hybrid to the turbo system like it will be in the LC250 is actually good regardless of complexity. The hybrid motor should do half or most of the low end power, putting less stress on the engine itself. And it’s made in Japan too. It will be fine.

Aluminum bodies with laser welded frames with better rustproofing will be a plus and will be lighter as well. The turbo hybrid engines will solve the one of the things I dislike about our 4Runner. After having 3 hybrid vehicles we are sold on their reliability and fuel economy. The frame rusting is the other issue. Being in the Midwest our 4Runner frame has quite a bit of rust even with additional undercoating...Will hedge our bets and buy the second year of either the Land Cruiser or 4Runner. Hope we get more actual info on the 25 4Runner soon!!

body panels…will aluminum panel be any more vulnerable to dents and damage than the steel panels in your GX? Also understood the steel gauge Toyota uses on the older LC200 and GX470 was thicker than the average car or truck 5:04 …is that true?

Hello David. Thank you very much for this information. It is fascinating to see how both vehicles are manufactured with such exacting quality and standards. My family has been Toyota (and more recently Lexus) owners in the US since the late 1960s. I have owned many Toyotas including recently two Land Cruisers (2000 and 2020). I am happy that the new GX will e assembled at the Tahara plant (where I believe both my Land Cruisers were built).
I am thinking of trading my 2020 Land Cruiser for a GX 550 (Luxury+ or Overtrail +) but I am worried that I won’t be fully satisfied with the “road feel” and weight of the GX compared to my V8 Land Cruiser. I love the weight and solid feel of the Land Cruiser including the overall build, heavy seats, hood, doors and rigidity/ride of the body on frame construction. However, the very low gas mileage of the Land Cruiser is killing me as I have a lot of highway commuting miles.
What are your thoughts/impressions of the new GX? I have already read most of your reviews (and others), but no actual test drives can be reported. I am hoping the fuel economy of the GX will be better (e.g., at or slightly over 20 mpg combined). Any advice other than to “stay tuned?” Thank you! Peter

IHI Turbos made in Japan and the company has been around since 1853 then a couple decades later started making turbos. The turbos are supposed to be the same ones that are used in Ferrari V6 Turbo vehicles. The GX 550 is very de tuned so I don't see why people are saying it's going to be un reliable. I mean 3.4L twin turbo pushing out 349HP. If they wanted to they could have made it 600HP which would make it as reliable as domestics who pull shit like that. I'm gonna get GX 550 Overtrail + in 2026 latest. I will either keep my 3rd gen done out Tacoma TRD Off Road as well or sell it but that GX 550 is coming to my home for sure. It is the nicest looking Lexus/Toyota SUV up to date in my opinion.

The TTV-6/10 spd combo haven't gotten stellar reviews in terms of drivability but I'm sure they will refine it. 2-Dealer greed will subside and we will see reduced ADMs. Base Corvettes are roughly going for MSRP as the demand has switched to Zo6 and ERays.

painful decision for me to pick between the V6 in the GX or the I-4 in the landcruiser/hybrid. Of course it depends on your full desires/needs, but it sounded like u need the v6 power, and perhaps other attributes of the GX model. I've been watching a lot of long vid's about maintenance on older Toyotas and Lexuses, namely v6's. It is interesting how quality is often truly same in terms of engine parts, and other sophisticated parts, in both toyota and lexus. But i dunno on the new models. Perhaps the GX will be superior, though i kind of doubt it bcuz of TMC's tradition of having the Landcruiser be its flagship generally. Eventualy i want one of the two as well and i'm not sure what i'll want at that time, but for now i want the Toyota even though the engine may seem small and the hybrid is not normally what i'd seek in a voyager which can do offroad. But bcuz TMC is so good at hybrid, i dn't have much fear. I reeeealy like the hybrid engineering in TMC, so dramatically better than everyone else's, from my perspective, which is simply real world fuel use, operational smoothness etc

A 6 cylinder would definitely downshift in those conditions. And this T24A-FTS is also undersquare at 87.5 mm bore x 99.5 mm stroke. @@rich7447 D4S solves all the direct injection issues. The 3.5l v6 is direct injected. I never said that a GTDI is a diesel I said the design is similar to a diesel and it has a torque curve similar to diesel. Of course gasoline doesn’t have the same energy content or burn characteristics but the delta between a GTDI and TDI of similar displacement is very narrow. I’d love to see a large displacement strait 6 GTDI to compare to a Cummins.
