    Whoever is designing the recent Toyota trucks, tundra, Tacoma, gx, and landcruiser 250 needs a raise…. This gx is like peak suv….. from design to drivetrain to interior and features is practically perfect

      Let’s hope that Toyota recall on the 3.4 V6 doesn’t slide into the GX’s life. I’m concerned as it’s the same engine .. Time will tell, for now I took my name off of the waiting list. Maybe wait for the 2025 to be introduced.

    Hi David, I’m also an engineer so I enjoy your videos. I have a 2023 GX460 V8 model myself and like it, these vehicles cost a lot of money so if you want to buy one the new V6 turbo is concerning to me since it’s quite complex and very new. I’ve heard of problems with this engine in other Toyota models over the past year so it’s going to take Toyota time to resolve these issues. Personally I would put off this new model till Toyota demonstrates that the engine is reliable otherwise it’s going to be a pain in the behind. It’s always best to give a new design a few years to work out the problems. Personally I’m very interested in how Toyota is going to address these engine problems since several of these engines had to be rebuilt after only 10,000 KM’s.

    • @samuelgatton
      @samuelgatton 6 місяців тому +1

      USA federal agency already put out a recall and Toyota announced their intent to announce a detailed recall by late July 2024. The issue was said to be caused by left over machining debris in the engine during manufacturing process and has said to have been fixed now. The affected models are lx/lc/tundra/sequoia from 2022 to 2023. Both announcements were publicly put out may 30 2024 already

    • @williamgalicia6219
      @williamgalicia6219 3 місяці тому

      The other reply is pretty spot on. Keep in mind that this Engine was first designed and put in the LS Sedan in 2017, the engine and turbos were tested to go a Million miles, no issues. The GX 550 is not part of the recall because the issue was caught before any 24 GX models were built. Also since the GX is built in Japan, Land Cruiser plant their were less issues with the LX that even came out in 22/23 than any where else and completely corrected to japans Land Cruiser plant and put to spec.. The GX 550 are 24 Models and have no way of having his issue. I have a GX 460 and a new Overtrail and just wow!

    • @samuelgatton
      @samuelgatton 6 місяців тому

      Ot and ot+ do not get a third row option at all they are completely removed and their mounting rails, but the interior wheel well bumps keep their cup holders as if the third row was there. It’s odd but makes sense in a business model to make things faster and cheaper for them at the factory

  • @dennisnky

    Hi David, Thanks for such a detailed and thoughtful report. I was leaning towards the luxury+ but the 22” tires give me pause due to the road noise/vibration and lack of two-tone paint options. I guess I could always replace the L+ with 20” tires.
    Does the L+ panoramic sunshade come with an interior blackout cover? Ugh. My ideal (future) trim would be Overtrail+ in Incognito with a third row and the panoramic sunshade. Maybe Lexus will offer this in 2025. Perhaps I just hold on to my 2020 Land Cruiser for another year. Excited to see trim levels at the Chicago Auto Show next week.

      From the hour long test drive I did in the overtrail model, it is quieter than most cars but not silent you can still hear the wind and all season tires a tiny bit which is what you want. But it is light years away from any truck or suv in its class that is body on frame design like this. Especially with this windshield design angle, you are going to hear the wing and tires more than you would in any other suv, but it is quiet enough to take a nap in with out being disturbed at all

    • @samuelgatton

Even the way it work and is engineered is entirely different now.

    Thanks for the review - do you think this would make a good replacement for a Land Rover Discovery 4? I love my Disco 4 and enjoy the similarly chunky, utilitarian looks of the GX - particularly the Overtrail.

    • @samuelgatton
      @samuelgatton 6 місяців тому

      If you don’t need the third row this is far superior to the disco in pretty much every way I have both and off road both and both are stock configuration. The gx out does the disco in every way other than forging depth ability from my personal experience. And the disco has a bit more luxury leather compare to the Lexus engineered leather.

    • @joelsmith9311

      @@samuelgatton thanks for sharing your experience, I appreciate it! How does the legroom situation compare? I’ve noticed in a few “body on frame” designs that the legroom - particularly the depth of the footwells in the rear - seems to be very shallow and restricted compared to the Disco 4? How is the GX? We’re in Australia and the drive times are often quite long, so legroom is important to us.

    • @samuelgatton
      @samuelgatton 6 місяців тому

      @@joelsmith9311 disco wins hands down in rear leg room but I would say the rear seats in the gx are more comfortable overall. Unlike previous gx models, the second row does not slide backward, so it’s not as good as it could have been sadly, but I’m a 6 foot tall (182.88 cm) 255lbs (115.66kg) an even with the driver seat moved all the way back fit and can move and seat comfortably, but can’t stretch out and have to readjust every so often to stay comfortable much like you would in a ford escape or ford explorer vehicle. The disco I feel I can stretch out a little bit more being my height and weight. (though it is still restricted in both disco and gx compare to say captains chairs in the lx or minivan leg room size). Hope this helps with some comparison

      The one big thing I did forget to mention when it comes to disco vs gx550 is the fact that in and off road the rover suspension is superior because it is air ride suspension equipped. That being said it is fully adjustable for high clearance when off roading vs lower for driver and passenger entry and road/highway driving too so that it is better for aero gas mileage and higher speeds. However, the Toyota did an absolutely amazing job with their dynamic suspension coils in the new gx550, but they will never be as efficient at adjusting the entire body and frame height like an air suspension is

      @@eg4449 I think planned obsolescence is partially true due to business economics. Once the reputation of reliable product has been established the business has to cash in. The build quality for these Lexus will still be Japanese but the increased number of parts(turbo) and reduced quality if materials (polyurethane) will reduce reliability.

      Highly doubtful. It will be reliable but not as reliable as the v8 over the long haul.

    I've been thinking of making the electric jump with the next purchase, but this truck may be the last ICE for me. I could buy and keep it for life. Give the EV's another year or two to mature.

    Did they get rid of the rear hvac ceiling vents? Looks like the 2nd row seats no longer fold flat.

      In the overtrail trims, yes, otherwise in all luxury and premium models the overhead hvac is roof mounted across all back seats

    Yes it's more modern and up to date but from the videos and pictures so far it seems like the older gx 460 may feel from premium from inside. That wood trim steering wheel, premium knobs and plush seats with better color options inside.

    Hi David. Watched your review here and the live event with Kirk. There’s a reason that your viewers overlap. You both come across smart, knowledgeable, genuine and non gimmicky. Love that.
    It seems like you both are not that overly impressed with the new GX. Sounded like the turbo lag and overall driving experience was not exciting for either of you. The limited interior options colours and functionality is disappointing. Flipping but not sliding second row seats, mildly useful third row, lack of shortcut buttons for frequently used functions like massaging seats and other settings, are some of the under designed elements that standout.
    I think after so much wait and anticipation, you and all of us expected to be blown away.
    Perhaps the capability of this vehicle is yet to be documented. Maybe reliability numbers years from now will be lifting this car’s value. However, the launch appears to have fallen short? Do you feel underwhelmed?
    This vehicle seems like a first generation of the new movement. Do you feel like Lexus will be making significant changes over the next few years to catch up to our expectations?
    Is it worth the price? Seems like the LC250 may be the one to buy but harder to get.

    Overtrail drives better bc Lexus omitted the KDSS out of the non overtrail trims which are standard on all trims of the outgoing model.

    Overtrail is actually better than the 600 because this 550 Overtrail has EKDSS, and LX600 does not.

    Nori Green Pearl is THE color for the 2024 GX
    I'd get the premium for $64k, and swap out the base wheels for nicer 20s
    Save you over $15k from the Luxury+
    I expect the hybrid to be the TC Hybrid Plug-in, with 404 HP, based on the 3.4 TT V6
