  • Grammy-winning musician Jacob Collier recently sat down with Genius to break down the chords for Daniel Caesar and H.E.R.’s 2017 collaboration, “Best Part.” Collier first became known for his multi-instrumental rearrangements of popular songs such as Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” and caught the attention of Quincy Jones in 2014. In this video, the 24-year-old musician puts his talent for explaining musical concepts to work.

    It's great to see a musical genius like Jacob who knows all the chords and notes in the book get so enthusiastic talking about a 4-chord song. A lotta guys with intermediate/advanced knowledge of music theory act so dismissive towards pop songs that repeat a few chords over & over.

      it's cause Jacob understands the music of the world and how complex everything is, I also think he finds an appreciation for the culture that music might come from! Lovely how that pentatonic scale over so many bright maj7 chords really mellows the overall 4 chord progression. I’ve been playing with it for hours. Simple and beautiful. 🙏

    This is so soothing and not condescending in any way. I've always been intimidated by music theory even though I love singing and jazz and this little snippet didn't make me feel like an idiot lol. I wonder if he's done more of these! Would love to be taught like this. Thanks Jacob!

    This song has such great reharmonization potential, I would have loved to hear what Jacob is thinking about in terms of extended harmony. For example, in the live version he sometimes replaces the Bbmaj7 with a C13(#11,#15) to get a luscious superlydian subtonic.

    • @gerry2294

    3:12 Classic Jacob Collier: sneakily drops some negative harmony hints here and there. Bbmaj7 is the negative harmony conjugate chord of the tonic Dmaj7.

    • @channalbert
      @channalbert 5 років тому +5

      Pegaso Stiky Sure. One of the ways to access the equivalent scale but with “negative polarity” is to pair every note with its “mirrored” note across a symmetry axis. This symmetry axis lays by definition in the middle of the tonic (D, in D major scale) and the fifth (A, in our case). So basically you have to draw a line exactly between D and A and pair them.
      If you want to understand this well, take a piece of paper and write all twelve notes in a line like ‘C, Db, D, Eb, E, F,...’ and find the middle point between D and A. Now connect all the lines from one side to the other side of the line. Now, for the mind blowing part, write the circle of fifths and link the paired notes you just found. See how simple it is on it.
      So you can see that if you transform the home chord Dmaj7 (D, F#, A, C#) to its ‘negative’ conjugate (D→A, A→D, F#→F, C#→Bb) and you have Bbmaj7 (Bb, F, D, A).

      @@ShashH-nz6bf bruh just Google it. Literally a circle that goes up in fifths (often with an inner circle containing the relative minor keys as well). C G D A E B and so on til it goes from F to C.
