The first time I heard Dafnis play was at a jam session at the IAJE in the Hilton Hotel in NYC back in 2001. I was waiting to play drums, myself but someone call Dafnis to play ahead of me and as soon as I heard him hit the floor tom I knew I had to sit back down and listen. The melodic ideas he had, floored me. It seemed like I was listening to Tony Williams and Changuito at the same time. He has no doubt been an inspiration ever since that moment. I never played that night but I sure did get to work.
The biggest thing I've always noticed is that, yes he obviously has freedom in his technical ability and expression, but he most importantly displays freedom of inspiration. He seems to pull rhythmic options and variations from anything he encounters. I remember D.Ming him when he first got on UA-cam about his rhythmic inspiration and he said he literally gets it from everything...even the sound of wind blowing through the trees. He has what every drummer should aim for, complete and total freedom.
I love how he takes the right musical choices at the right time (so all the Improv. Perfomances). And he shows again, that the 1st fundamental idea is always simple and virtuosity comes with the interpretation of this trivial idea.
One of my friends asked once: "Are the drums music?" I was offended. And tried to find a good example to prove that drum part alone can be considered as music. As I was searching, I realised that there are not so many drum solos that can be fully apreciated by non-drumers and be percepted as a tune. And it shows the real proffessionalism in my opinion. Dafnis' solo in the beginning of the video is a perfect proof to show people that drums alone can give birth to music. I feel like Dafnis is an amasing teacher, his coordination level is beyond comparisson and watching and listening to him puts a big smile on my face and makes me wanna practise and get better. So many things to learn from one lesson ! ! ! The way he is relaxed shows to what extent he has explored and exploited the possibilities of each and every rhythm that he demonstrated. Pure mastery of the techniques = made simple ! And. . . he never raised a single bead of sweat neither on his forehead nor under his armpits ! He spoke about the 'vocabulary' of the drums BUT, one has to take one's hat off for his mastery of the english language with that superb 'latino' accent ! At 1:04 . . ., you spoke about indian music. . . I am an indian from the south of India and I have been influenced by the 'Carnatic' music, as well as the 'Hindustani'= north indian music. I would like to know HOW you were influenced by these types of rhythms that exist for so many centuries, and why??? Thank you !

I enjoyed his comment about how he uses a foundational ostinato- like quarter notes on the hi-hat- to create a relationship between his rhythmic ideas and the pulse, inviting the listener to emerge themselves in the communication.
1st off, what an awesome lesson, one of the most inspiring ones to date. I believe my favorite part was him verbally pronouncing what you want to play if you're having trouble actually playing it. Big shout out to Dafnis and Drumeo for this one!
Great to see Dafnis back on Drumeo. His last lesson helped me out so much with independence. My favorite thing about the lesson was how he takes such a simple concept and transforms it into something so complex and musical. Amazing drummer and teacher.
Hi from Puerto Rico! As a student I can't thank you guys enough for bringing Dafnis again to your studios. His teaching have been very helpful for me in diferent ways but specialy in the Afro-cuban and Afro-rican music. So thanks again. I laugh a lot when he sugested to play the pulse or the clave with the hands and sing the difrent ritmic cells because my teacher also recomends that but with words. And, well, the best way to memorize something is having fun, so we got very creative with does words. It is a great way to develop your sence of timing, groove and vocabulary. I liked the hole lesson but that just killed me.
Hello from Connecticut! As someone who has heritage in Puerto Rico (my father is from there), learning the music from there is something that has been becoming more important to me. I don't have any musical family here, and therefore couldn't learn our rhythms, so it would be great to me if you could share some of these rhythms, music that you listen to that shows me these things, and just any general tips. I loved that solo so much and I was feeling so much groove and emotion within each of those chops and sounds. The combination between the foot work, the cymbals and the incorporation of the toms was amazing to my ears! Thank you!

I love Latin Music/Cuban/Salsa and playing it since the first Latin-Wave with this Santana-Percussion-Power wails over the Rock+Jazz World Music Scene way back in the late sixties/early seventies. As a drum-loving Guitarplayer with experiences in Timbales+Conga Percussion I'm very exited and thankful for this lessons and exercises. Dafnis Prieto combines in his playing and teaching all this wide range of musical spirits and styles. His independent exercises from the first Drumeo video couple of years ago still got me practicing and is sometimes hard to get it "Groovy" but pushes me up to the next levels and develops my skills widely. Thanks for this! I'm a Drumeo Member/Follower since start-up and ALL the Drummers there are unbelievable Artists but Dafnis (and John Wooten) inspired me the most. Love it!
What I really like is his musicality. Even if he plays alone you could feel the montuno between each note that he's playing. That's the best: when while doing rythms you're also creating music in a melodic way. That's so full of SABOR!
I really enjoyed how Dafnis orchestrated simple rudimental grids/patterns throughout the kit. Along with his impeccable rhythmic interp, it's a great device for young & old drummers to apply in their own musical settings. Dafnis truly demonstrates a building block approach that is useful for any drummer to make their own choices with. Whether it's soloing or playing over an ostinato this guy has it all. Great lesson!
I've not seen Dafnis play before. I like the ideas of "rhymthic cells" and the "hi-hat as a dancing limb.It was most useful hearing about independence and specific breakdowns and seeing LOTS of playing to show what was being explained.

My favorite part of the lesson was when he played cells 1-5 the first time straight through without embellishments, because the ideas albeit simple still sounded musical. And it's application is relative to all styles. Thank you DRUMEO!!!!
My favorite part is when Dafnis played the rhythmic cells with the piano montuno (around 41 minutes). The rhythms really "breathed" and swung. Wow!! How nice to see material that is practiced in a purely technical way then made into MUSIC!!!
The best part of this lesson was he explained the rythmic cells and then applying then in to the drumset , i am very inspire to start playing cuban music ( salsa) , and i really enjoyed the solo , it was amazing ¡¡¡ , thanks Dafnis for sharing your knowledge and thanks drumeo ofr making this video possible .

I loved just playing along on my djembe and practicing the things we got taught throughout the lesson. It gave me a lot of insight in things i could be applying, as I have played drums with my high school big band for a few years. Also that funk groove in the vamp at the end just made me smile so much, I enjoyed this lesson a lot, definitely one of my favourites so far!

Dafnis has this amazing humble characteristic about him, despite likely being one of the best drummers on the planet, and maybe even in history. Been trying this stuff and I'd be ecstatic if I achieved even 1/10,000th of his abilities.
What he does makes me remember i little bit of the Benny Greb's idea of the rhythm alphabet, Mark Guiliana expands a little bit on his DVD (Bring MARK PLEASE!!!!), Mark has the jazz feel behind the idea, and Dafnis has an Latin Feel on everything he does, that is amazing! Thanks again DRUMEO.
This guy is really creative and musical and I love his accent. But that solo man, for some reason it sounded really relatable as I heard some familiar ideas in there. That was the best part of the lesson as I immediately knew I was in for a treat. Thank you Drumeo.
I really enjoyed the opening solo. It was full of little melodic ideas which developed in a really musical way. It was less of a "drum solo", and more of a "solo drums" improvised composition. It creates so much anticipation for the listener and definitely held my attention start to finish!
Love the reminder that very simple building blocks can lead to incredible facility. Favorite part is at 25minutes where he starts using the exercises as embellishments.
I noticed while practicing, that if you have a repeating pattern on the feet while soloing, it not only spices of the solo but it makes it much easier to stay on top of the original tempo. I used to have problems soloing, but once i started adding 'rhythmic cells' to my solos, I became way better.
Favorite part: Dafnis: Let's do that for a second... Then drops the dopest funky beat ever just like "i'm not even trying" 46:28 - 47:22 And those sick 46:53 B. Purdie hi-hat barks with ghost doubles... ugh. Sweet.

This is my first time seeing and hearing of Dafnis. Holy smokes, I could not have been introduced to Dafnis' jaw dropping talent at a better time in my musical journey of drumming. At 46:30.... I was like, WHOA!!! I watched the entire lesson twice (back to back) to get the high level. For the most part, I always get the coolest epiphanies on the second time around and will drill down...in this case, it was at 46:30. I had a few song tracks that a friend sent that he wanted me to spice up on the pre-chorus and bridge. I am going to use what Dafnis demonstrated... I can't wait to lay these grooves down and send back to my friend!!!!! Thanks DRUMEO and DAFINS!!!
So much amazing stuff here, favorite part though is Dafnis's talk from 34:00 - 36:14 about the musicality and communication importance of the hi-hat as reference, and thinking of his left leg as "a dancing limb". Funny, but so important... and totally badass. Thank you both for all this goodness :)
Dude I love this channel. I can't private lessons and our band director doesn't anything about drums so all I have to learn from are youtube videos and honestly I haven't learned nearly as much from the other channels as I have from this channel. I honestly can't get enough of the guys that they bring in. Just from this video alone, I've learned tons of stuff just on rudiments and applying them to the kit
so smooth!! wow, I've been playing for 20+ years and would love to have that book.. My favorite part was the solo in the beginning since it's just pure creation and messing around making great music. Great show guys.

I am listening Dafnis first time!! I really enjoyed this video .The favorite part of mine in this video is how he improvised the groove using simple Rhythmic Cells ,It sounds really awesome !! Actually the one thing I have learnt from this is it`s always not necessary to add some complex drumming patterns to make it sounds good but actually you need to be very simple ,just add simple rhythmic cells or some of rudiments and try to explore that on the drum kit ,it would be more approachable to audience.

This guy is really creative and musical and I love his accent. But that solo man, for some reason it sounded really relatable as I heard some familiar ideas in there. That was the best part of the lesson as I immediately knew I was in for a treat. Thank you Drumeo.
I really enjoyed the opening solo. It was full of little melodic ideas which developed in a really musical way. It was less of a "drum solo", and more of a "solo drums" improvised composition. It creates so much anticipation for the listener and definitely held my attention start to finish!
Love the reminder that very simple building blocks can lead to incredible facility. Favorite part is at 25minutes where he starts using the exercises as embellishments.
Dafnis is truly amazing! He articulates the concepts very clearly and makes them easier to learn!

I noticed while practicing, that if you have a repeating pattern on the feet while soloing, it not only spices of the solo but it makes it much easier to stay on top of the original tempo.
I used to have problems soloing, but once i started adding 'rhythmic cells' to my solos, I became way better.

This is my first time seeing and hearing of Dafnis. Holy smokes, I could not have been introduced to Dafnis' jaw dropping talent at a better time in my musical journey of drumming. At 46:30.... I was like, WHOA!!! I watched the entire lesson twice (back to back) to get the high level. For the most part, I always get the coolest epiphanies on the second time around and will drill down...in this case, it was at 46:30. I had a few song tracks that a friend sent that he wanted me to spice up on the pre-chorus and bridge. I am going to use what Dafnis demonstrated... I can't wait to lay these grooves down and send back to my friend!!!!! Thanks DRUMEO and DAFINS!!!
Mega cool! Dafnis is the best. The basic subdivion ideas are so important. Improvising on the drum with more sounds was my favorite part.
So much amazing stuff here, favorite part though is Dafnis's talk from 34:00 - 36:14 about the musicality and communication importance of the hi-hat as reference, and thinking of his left leg as "a dancing limb". Funny, but so important... and totally badass. Thank you both for all this goodness :)
Dude I love this channel. I can't private lessons and our band director doesn't anything about drums so all I have to learn from are youtube videos and honestly I haven't learned nearly as much from the other channels as I have from this channel. I honestly can't get enough of the guys that they bring in. Just from this video alone, I've learned tons of stuff just on rudiments and applying them to the kit

I am listening Dafnis first time!! I really enjoyed this video .The favorite part of mine in this video is how he improvised the groove using simple Rhythmic Cells ,It sounds really awesome !! Actually the one thing I have learnt from this is it`s always not necessary to add some complex drumming patterns to make it sounds good but actually you need to be very simple ,just add simple rhythmic cells or some of rudiments and try to explore that on the drum kit ,it would be more approachable to audience.
