Nice work! On the Big Ant dev timeline, we did go over budget, however that was at Big Ant's cost - we're intensely mad AFL fans so we wanted to make sure the gameplay was as good as we thought it could be. Once the game was good at its core, it was our intention to bring more depth in later versions, as we did with RLL/Cricket/AO etc but obviously didn't get the chance. With the Tru Blu "Game of the Year Edition", it came about because MS/PS have a disk duplication discount for a "GOTY" edition, they just didn't think anyone would be cheeky enough to call a game that to get the discount.
As an aussie game dev, this was an absolutely great, thoroughly informative video! It must have taken countless hours compiling all the footage - this is great documentation about Australia's videogame industry. Thanks for making it!

This was an incredible video, a great breakdown of each game and its importance to Australian game development. So many people complain about the graphics but we need to remember that these games are made on a fraction of the budget of your FIFAs and your NBA 2Ks. The move to Unreal Engine for AFL Evolution 2 could be the start of a good patch for the series, and Wicked Witch has proved that it is willing to make their games better even after launch. Commentary production has long been a weakness in AFL games, but having the likes Cometti and Hudson on board lends a thread of authenticity to the games. Who could forget such gems like "uncorking the genie", or selecting the Swans so you could hear "Goodes... produces the goods".

I now really want a worldwide event where pros who play anything called football have to play one of the other footballs in some sort of tournament. That'd just be amazingly goofy and awkward to watch.
A Well-Mannered White Family absolutely not. End zones are bigger the nfl wide receivers will have a huge amount of space to score not to mention wider fields which benefits the nfl. Fewer downs don’t mean much when most of the time in the nfl you kick it off after the third down. Easier field goals in Canadian football. A extra player since Canadian football uses 12 instead of 11 meaning you can have even more talent from the nfl on the field. Since you can have more then one player move before a snap in the cfl it means wr can have a running start. No way in hell the cfl can beat the nfl. Did you even think before saying that.
@@oswaldfigglebottom More than 4. Canada, the US, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and a few more. Also, most football codes involve using your hands. Soccer/"association" football is the exception, not the norm in that regard.
Football has nothing to do with kicking the ball, it's an umbrella term for sports involving balls (which includes ovoid shaped balls) played ON FOOT by teams where the goal (no pun intended) is to move the ball to the other end and getting it past the line somehow (either by touching the line, hitting the back of a net or going over a set of goals).

I know it's has an incredibly limited audience, but there is such an untapped audience. It would be neat to have an "AFL Legends" game where you can play old players in their prime, like Dipper or Nathan Buckley, or something smaller, including the VFL leagues.
I think that something like that with an option for more arcadie/light controls might be an excellent way of introducing more people to the sport, its rules and its history

Aussie Rules = 500 + kill the man + (rugby - knock ons) In the 80s espn would have games on almost everyday. I like American football but Aussie rules did explain to me as a kid that it's kind of weird that Americans allow the slower players back into the play by default. As part of that 4%, I sure appreciate this deep dive into something so specific. I remember having fun with one or two of these games the couple of times I played them as a kid, and I'd always wondered what happened with them. Neat to finally have someone shovel that information into me.
I was literally waiting for you to mention that Gaelic games. Premiership 05 and it are basically carbon copies of each other (Go figure), down to the horrible commentary and everything "They are about to go in, for their cup of tea and their banana", gets me every time. Great vid
I'm an Australian who isn't into sports, including AFL and cricket (crazy, I know). But I've always been intrigued by an AFL game I've seen here and there. Interesting to finally see them, and from a standpoint of a footy fan too. It was enjoyable to see Aussie oriented games, even if I have nearly no idea of the sport. Keep it up mate!
Yeah it seems to stem from the distaste of afl in Nsw/QLD as I think Rugby League is more popular. I lived in Victoria for a good portion of my life then moved to NSW where then the ‘Gayfl’ comments started

I went to Oklahoma State in 2010. Most evenings I would go to The Colvin (campus recreation center) for pick-up basketball. First to 21 5v5. Being 6’4 meant I was often the tallest, until the 6’11 dude would show up. He later walk-on Oklahoma State’s basketball team, meaning, unlike me, he actually had basketball talent. *Once* in the countless times we played did I best him. That game I refused to post up forcing him to guard me around the 3-point line. And for some reason, everything I did that game was right. I scored 17 of the 21 points that game - thanks to several lucky skyhooks. The dude I was playing against was Mason Cox, current Ruckman for Collingwood. The moral of the story: I BEAT A FUTURE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE *ONCE* when I was 18 (he was was 19), in a sport he wouldn’t go professional in.
Even though i'm an American, during quarantine, i've developed an interest in watching Footy, as i find it very entertaining. Also, I'm a Swans Supporter as well, as i've wanted to become a fan of a Consistent Club and with the Swans having only missed the Finals only 4 times since 95, I decided to choose them. Plenty of greats since the 1990's. Lockett, Goodes, Jetta, Johnson, Buddy (Although he was better with Hawthorn), Roos, etc. and future hopefuls including Papley and Allir.
I am a Brazilian that first AFL beacuse a Brazilian guy started playing AFL few years ago (i cant even remember his name), but i followed more closer in last few years watching 2017 and 2018 Grand Finals live (i dont had the luck to watch 2019)

I am from the UK and this is really interesting. I have enjoyed your videos for a long time minimme and I will like to see what videos you have in store for the future. Keep up the good work my friend. 😁👍
I'm from Sydney and I think it should be noted that not only is AFL limited to Australia, the majority of teams are from Victoria (the second most populous state). NRL is the most popular football code here in Sydney and is a slight variation to Rugby Union, but also has it's own video games! My favourite sport is traditional football or soccer and is also widely played. As you might expect australians love sports
There are 3 (or 4) sports in Australia that are referred to as "footy" by the people who watch each code. There is AFL the subject of this video, Rugby (think Springboks and the Brits) and Rugby league which is like a derivative of Rugby and my personal sport of choice. A forth could maybe be Football but 95% of the pop or more just call it soccer
Really happy to see you do a video on something that you're really passionate about! Haven't heard about AFL till today but your enthusiasm is really contagious and I enjoyed the video from start to finish!
AFL Live is great. A bit bare bones, but I had high hopes for the future of the series. Then Live 2 came out. :( It's great to see another soul who is blinded by their love of Aussie rules enough to push through the faults of these games. I have put a disgusting amount of hours in to Evo 1. Haha
There are 2 things that can always bore me to hell. Team sports, and videogames based on them. Yet somehow you made me watch an hour-long video about some obscure games about an obscure sport from over the other side of the world. Well done mate!
So happy you gave Aussie Rules Footy NES a good wrap. I remember when I had it back in the day marvelling at how good it worked for a d pad and two action buttons. Looking back now, its still very playable. Also, I loved AFL 99 on PS1 too. It just worked. I've always been a League/Union fan, but AFL 99 was extremely playable. Awesome video again man.

This is so crazy, I recently stumbled into both this channel and the AFL in the last couple of months. I was a big XFL fan so when it folded I started following the AFL to fill the void, now I'm a proud Freo fan. Imagine my surprise when one of my favorite new channels puts out a video on my new favorite sport! Looking forward to footy's return in just some minutes!
brother in law lost my copy of AFL 98, someone's gotta upload that shit for me because it's the best - you can cannonball like ten guys at once by running into a group of players

But your content is always so chill, and well read, I enjoyed every moment of this. Don’t be afraid of making more content around games you care for. Thanks for the hour long lesson on this!
Great vid
I don't watch sports and I'd never heard of footy before, but I'll goddamned if I didn't enjoy watching a 50+ min video on it! good job!
If you didn’t hear this at school:
If you supported afl and some kid came up to you and said “you like gayfl” than you didn’t go to school
Sounds like a NSW/Qld thing. I lived in WA for 20 years and Vic for another 20 years. No one has ever said that to me.
Yeah it seems to stem from the distaste of afl in Nsw/QLD as I think Rugby League is more popular. I lived in Victoria for a good portion of my life then moved to NSW where then the ‘Gayfl’ comments started
@@KirbyWGlasses Yeah, NSW/ QLD are more rugby states rather than AFL
Sounds like an East Coast thing I'm too far West to understand
It might be because I'm 14 or because I'm Adelaidian, but I've never experienced that.
How the hell is the Aussie audience so small! You're such a great UA-camr!
Up there Cazaly!
Please cover the management games! Watching this made me go watch an actual game and learn the rules a little; I'm definitely gonna go check out a couple of these games. v cool, good job
Footy looks like it's a really cool sport, I hope it gains lots of traction in the future.
Congrats on this vid, many hours of work but the result is great and you're doing justice to some underappreciated work yet again you goddamn hero without a cape.
3:50 holy hell, that sounds great. Most other voice sample sound like absolute crap on NES.
And honestly, the game looks great as well... ashamed they didn’t release it in the states. I have a feeling it would have caught on.
I love all these people who are just learning about afl lmao
50 minutes of minimme's voice on rainy day working from home, this is bliss
Big US fan of both rugby and ur channel. I found out about AFL one day whil3 probably researching rugby on Wikipedia and i was instantly fascinated, glad u made a video such as this!! Ill check out aussie rules footy on NES if i can!
Cool! A new video! I love your content, greeting from Chile!
Duuuude I played the absolute hell out of AFL Live Premiership Edition (2004) as a kid. "Goodes... produces the goods" lives in my head rent-free. Amazing video, man
non-australians: "whats a hand ball?"
pretty much just punching the ball with the side of your fist to pass the ball to another player.
handball has like 100 different meanings throughout all sports
8:42 "It's somehow a me problem" Yes minimme it is the slowdown from driver 2 comes to haunt you again but in the form of a AFL game.
AFL Live 2003: Heartbeat indicator? THAT'S WHAT THAT WAS?
Really nice of you to make the effort to keep us foreigners engaged. This sport is even more incomprehensible than cricket.
Well damn. This looks like a really fun sport to watch and it has a surprisingly big international scene with utterly random countries.
Will definitely check out the 2021 International Cup o: You mad lad you're tricking gamers into watching kangaroo rugby!
The moral of the story:
I BEAT A FUTURE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE *ONCE* when I was 18 (he was was 19), in a sport he wouldn’t go professional in.
“Those god damn umpires” come on you and I both know the Dogs deserved that premiership 😂great video though love to see AFL getting a wider audience
I'm expecting to see Mini having a punchout in front of an IGA
AWESOME!!! I haven't seen anyone cover the AFL games and im so glad you did. I'm a Geelong supporter and love all the games. Great video man
Even though i'm an American, during quarantine, i've developed an interest in watching Footy, as i find it very entertaining.
Mate, you could've fooled me if you told me you were a fellow Aussie. Besides maybe the username ;)
i literally got chills when i saw a 54-min minimme video! a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one!
Afl live 04 was my favourite game as a kid. Barry Hall was an absolute beast on that game.
Great video, I can feel the love and care that you put into the video. The work was worth it.
I am a Brazilian that first AFL beacuse a Brazilian guy started playing AFL few years ago (i cant even remember his name), but i followed more closer in last few years watching 2017 and 2018 Grand Finals live (i dont had the luck to watch 2019)
superninja252 was it Héritier Lumumba?
Footyforever 123 ye must have been
I do kinda like to have a game of each different kind of sport in my library, so I might have to pick up one of these. Thanks for covering all these games!
14:05 That's the most Australian thing I've ever heard in my life
I'm a Russian living in America, and even I support AFL, I played Football(Soccer) and Australian Rules Football since I was young back in Russia.
Afl the game created to confuse non australians. Then again it's even confusing to some australians
I used to play the afl 2005 in playstation 2 all the time and I forgot all about it until this video, thank you for bringing up all dem memories
'99 is also the first game where you aren't always the same white guy!
So thankful I found an Australian gamer youtube channel!
I like how the pitch looks like a giant drawing of the ball.
As a native Aussie and lifelong footy fan, this thought has never connected with me
Thank you for exposing me to this new sport that I will now spend the whole day learning about.
I am from the UK and this is really interesting. I have enjoyed your videos for a long time minimme and I will like to see what videos you have in store for the future. Keep up the good work my friend. 😁👍
I feel honored to be in the 4 percent of your Australian viewers, personally I support the Geelong Cats
Was this deliberately released on the day the footy comesback? Also love the fact a reputable reviewer has finally reviewed all these games.
The original Nintendo AFL game cannot be beat - OUT OF BOUNDS, ON THE FULL!
You've absolutely nailed the appeal of that NES AFL game, it is amazing.
You should review Scarface the World is Yours
This deserves more views. Clearly did a lot of work. This is great. Thank you minimme.
Hey mate, great video! I'm an Aussie living in Toronto, and it was great reliving some of that AFL history. Carn the Cats. 😉
It's great to see another soul who is blinded by their love of Aussie rules enough to push through the faults of these games. I have put a disgusting amount of hours in to Evo 1. Haha
I'd love to see some AFL Live modding to strengthen its weak points.
There are 2 things that can always bore me to hell. Team sports, and videogames based on them. Yet somehow you made me watch an hour-long video about some obscure games about an obscure sport from over the other side of the world. Well done mate!
Me: Doesn't even like Australian Football
Also me: watches because an hour of Minime is still an hour of Minime.
7:49 that song would fit right in a harvest moon
This is one of the best videos you’ve put out brother, and I put it on at least once a week when I’m going to sleep. Your recent vids are really excellent too, I love to see you growing and doing well, here’s to even more good times!
What. The. Fook? Australian football? First time I heard of it.
"Footie" 😂
some good fights break out. afl is sick more dangerous than american football
Have a look at it mate. Seasons on tonight. Very fun sport
@@ayderla789 Sure...
Man I feel your pain, I used to follow the AAF, then it folded, this year I started following the XFL then it too folded
Oof freo as a western Australian I think you've made a grave mistake and I don't even go for the eagles
brother in law lost my copy of AFL 98, someone's gotta upload that shit for me because it's the best - you can cannonball like ten guys at once by running into a group of players
Great video, loved the in depth analysis of each game. Being a crows fan since the beginning and playing aussie rules on the nes as a kid, this brought back so many good memories. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, just subbed!
35:29 “bulldozed into the ocean” is that a 2 Guys 1 Cup Wil Anderson reference?
Just watched a 54 minute about a sport I've never experienced before
I love you minimme
