Alexi Laiho, frontman and guitarist for melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, took us through his sparse, but powerful, setup before the band’s Nashville show at the Exit/In. A combination of ESP guitars, Marshall amps, and a few Boss pedals help create Laiho’s lightning-fast leads and bone-rattling rhythms.
Laiho tours with a trio of his signature ESP Custom Shop models. “Greeny” and “Scythe,” are both tuned a whole step down from standard and house a single EMG HZ F-H2 passive humbucker and an EMG MM-04 gain boost. The boost is almost always on and is controlled with a simple switch near the volume knob.
“Pinky” is the third ESP that Laiho takes on the road and is tuned to B-F#-B-E-G#-C#. All the guitars are strung with Laiho’s signature set from DR Strings (.010-.056).

I feel like many Finnish people may not even realize how integral bands like Children of Bodom were for putting Finland on the map for much of the world. If it weren't for Alexi, I might never know the wonders of Suomi perkele. I now know it to be one of the most Metal countries in the world. Thanks to COB I eventually discovered Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Rotten Sound, Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Lordi, Wintersun, Moonsorrow. I don't hesitate to say that I digged Bodom's sound the most out of all of them. RIP Alexi!!!

+Jacksabbath44 YEP. Saved that information to do some tests. I used to do this back in '09, but leaving the rate on 0 just to give more body to the sound. But not with another settings.
Give it a try with 0 rate. Sounds HUGE

Love how simple and badass his setup is. I only ever use the bridge pickup anyway playing metal but it never occurred to me to just get a single pickup guitar. Dude knew what he wanted and made it work so well. RIP Alexi! Thank you for introducing me to to the wonderful country of Finland and Suomi perkele! VOI VITTU SAATANA PERKELE!!!

I remember being a kid on the bus and listening to a cd playing with a mix on it. “In Your Face” was playing and at that point I never forgot about this band. I also remember watching them play “Living Dead Beat” in the Comcast music video metal section in 07 and watching the solo over and over again. Such a shame, he was an incredible musician. Rip Alexi.

Love people who can make minimalism work.
    3 pedals. One pickup.
Not what you'd expect from one of the top guitar players in the world, but there you go \m/

Man that is a setup I can work with. Loved it. Very simple and straight forward. No high end bullshit, no expensive pedalboards you tapdance on it. His guitar has only ONE pickup, for crying out loud! PERFECT for him. I go crazy sometimes with those 4..5.. knobs guitars, 5 way switches and humbucker with coil split. Man..
A good guitar, good amp and 3 pedals.

Yes Perry is a spaz. I love it. I find his genuine enthusiasm and ADHD totally endearing and likeable. He is so passionate and excited about this stuff he can't contain it. The interruptions are worth it in my book. I think the other PG interviewers are great as well.
