CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bud (John Travolta) and Wes (Scott Glenn) compete head-to-head in the Gilley's rodeo competition in front of Sissy (Debra Winger) and Pam (Madolyn Smith Osborne).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"You a real cowboy?" John Travolta traded disco for a mechanical bull in this adaptation by James Bridges and Aaron Latham of Latham's article on Western nightlife. Texas country boy Bud (Travolta) moves to Houston to work on an oil rig with his Uncle Bob (Barry Corbin), and he swiftly becomes indoctrinated in the nighttime rituals of drinking, dancing, and showing off cowboy duds at Gilley's, the enormous local honkytonk. There he meets and marries the sassy Sissy (Debra Winger), but the honeymoon quickly ends when Sissy starts spending too much time learning the men-only skill of mechanical bull-riding from ex-con Wes (Scott Glenn); Bud throws her out and hooks up with slumming Pam (Madolyn Smith). Under the paternal tutelage of Uncle Bob, Bud then learns not only how to master the bull but also what it takes to be a real man rather than just an ersatz cowboy. With a story, cast, and setting that were essentially Saturday Night Fever country-style, Urban Cowboy was poised to be a summer 1980 hit. Although its box office did not live up to Fever's legacy, Urban Cowboy did spawn a soundtrack album of country-and-western hits and helped spur a Western fashion vogue; people from all regions began sporting cowboy boots, and mechanical bulls started replacing passé disco floors. The first of Travolta's many comebacks, Urban Cowboy provided the star with a more "manly" image after his Moment by Moment (1978) fiasco, but it was neophyte co-star Winger who got even better notices. With its Western milieu and retro view of relationships, Urban Cowboy stands as a sign of the nascent Reagan era, as '70s icon Travolta learned bull-riding himself and replaced his white polyester with a black Stetson.

Scott Glenn's acting in this movie was sublime. Played his role perfectly!
He was spectacular in all his roles!
I just heard a couple of hours ago that Mickey Gilley had passed away. He was pretty much the Jimmy Buffet of country music. Meaning that he was a really popular singer who also had his chain of restaurants/clubs. He was around for a long time.
Also the reason I looked this up, I don’t know much but I lived in Pasadena and this was always a small Easter egg of history forgotten by this younger generation which intrigued me
Sad
Wes plays the absolute best villain in any movie ever made.
Now that's what Cowboy Saloons are meant to be like. Take me back to 80's any old time.
1981aerodyne that's a nice rig you got there on your profile picture
1981aerodyne Palomino Club. "The Valley" LA 1970s. Loved that time
Palomino Club in Charlotte
In the .ovie it was the 70s. That was houston in the 70s during the oil boom. Guilleys club was located in Houston. I done growed up near there
Do they still have these type of clubs in Houston in 2021?
Brings back memories watching this as a kid with my dad rip dad
1981 summer here, Asotin, wa
Whatever happens were all in it together
Yes, I love this movie, and it just popped into my head that Pasadena was nicknamed Stinkadena for a long time lol 😢
Same, watched it with my parents but it was more recent, like early 2000’s
Best movie! I saw it as a young girl. Almost walked out bc the beginning was boring to us. Sooo glad we stayed! Best ever! Very good show
I definitely think Wes was a really well written villain
That was sweet the way Sissy was happy for Bud and smiled at him when he won.
40 years before Covid.
1:01 John Travolta is a guy with cowboy's balls of steel
dainesecowbo
That mechanical bull looks fun too ride lol
I've ridden one once, it was so fun!
When your pride dominates your heart you can lose what's really important.
Need to swaller that pride. It’s one of the seven deadlies
He should have stayed with Pam
This is one hell of a movie John Travolta did a good job and the girl in the movie Her name was Pam and so❤
My name is Pam too
Went into my first country bar a month ago and once I saw there was no mechanical bull I was so disappointed
Fun fact this was an actual bar which was able to hold thousands of people. My mom used to go there before it got shut down due to all the bar fights
Gilley's was not shut down due to bar fights 🙄
Gilley's was closed down in 1989 due to loss of profits, then it burned down in 1990.
It was shut down due to covid
Mechanical bulls have came a long way
They were actually tougher to ride back then.
Donnie Dugger very true
The mechanic's were much more complex back then. They were yet to be stripped and safety proofed before being released.
Very good for the back
Come on BUD, YOU GONNA GET FIRED, BUD!!!!!!!
Bud.Texas.
SexyJohn.Travolta.♥️🙂👨🌾
Maravillosa pelicula q tiempos aquellos q nunca olvidare de hoy y siempre ...
A real bull is way different than this mechanical bull
I was looking all over for this!
Classic movie lol
I was sorry to hear Mickey Gilley passed away. RIP Brother.❤
Man,time friggen flies!!😔
Now ain’t that the truth
Brett troutman is going ride the bull
My favorite movie
Mine to. Always will be
I love that Bud was # 87
Recuerdo cuando competi en el corral en guadalupe . en los noventa
I wonder what setting they have it's set at ? There are 10 and it's all adjustable belts & pulleys under the bull but the toggle -switch operator can make or break you .... House mgt . at these night - clubs have you sign liability -wavers w/witness sigs. for Each ride .. { Smart ... } I first came across these in the early/mid 80's in clubs in Germany and later in central Fla. My personal best was setting #5 ...... I bailed midway thru #6 , as I got off balance early in the ride and couldn't get centered again ...... I figured I didn't do Too badly , considering I had no prior experience before encountering these for the first time ... I started on 3 without getting thrown and moved up after a few Sat. nights of this ... Not bragging , just saying it's do-able if you study what the successful riders do and pay attention to what they tell you ...
Urban 🤠
Yeah, Bud, keeping looking...she left!
My parents first date was here in Aug 1980
an 83!!!!!
I loved the way James Gammon said that.
Favorite movie
A beautiful moment!❤
I love sissy more than pam
Randy Curtis and the I am going to do the same thing I can be a great time in total and I have been a long time and consideration and time for you are not able and willing and ready to do it in the attached file for my name and address of
*I LOVE PAM*
Randy Curtis you like to scrape the bottom of the barrel
Both were stunning. Sissy had that down home style, and Pam looked like she was right outta Dallas 🤣.
How do you even score something like this? I didn't see a damn difference in either one of their rides...I mean you either stay on the thing or your don't right?
Very different. Your score depends on your style and grace during the ride. Almost like a dance in a strange way. The better you look doing it the higher your score. All about technique.
For real bull riding the score is 50% Bull and 50% rider. For mechanical bull riding it may be the same based on the setting of the bull. I am assuming that at a completion like this the bull would be set at the max thus same for all riders. As my dad used to say. It's in the script.
late af in this reply haha but if you watch closely Bud is kicking/spurring with his outside leg for those extra points. its easier to stay on top when youre using both legs to grip, like Wes was doing.
I think each rider has a certain style and class all their own.
Wes won and everyone knows it
I was sorry to hear Mickey
what the name of the song playing in the background and by who?
Damm Pam so fine
Lats go bud light
Ayee
Damn Vincent Vega from pulp fiction beat Roger from training Day

I here Gilles is coming back
kris brennan they been saying that for a long time im from Houston and i wish gilley would make up his mind
So is Jesus *LMAO*
@@SUGAR_XYLER LMAO
i like pam more than sissy
+JHATDRUMMER1976 She's a rich society girl who will dump Bud at some point. Bud's Uncle bob saw that.
JHATDRUMMER1976 __ Pam's Needy!!! And it just made me realize I've been needy lately too, ewwww gross.. Thanks for opening my eyes_ I have got to change that asap!!! Pam sucks
So if your hat stays on you get a better score? 🤔
Don't always bet on Black....🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️😘......😎
Dublado?
what is the name of the song in the background played at 1:15. I don't know anyone who knows the title. It's not on any soundtrack. Charlie Daniels Band I am sure but WTH is it? Thank you in advance.
A mechanical bull entertains this many ignorant peope, lol!🤣
It’s such a hilariously dump plot point to center a movie around
PASADENA, TEXAS
Too much testosterone me thinking
Only 8 seconds..

TALKIN BOUT SCOTT GLEN
Jim Dennis Scott Glen is so hot! He's an awesome actor too. He's right up there with Sam Elliott
*Love them both*
Bahahahah bahahahah nothing like the real bull such 🤡
Pam is pretty Barack. Where did you find her?
Wes got robbed. He won that competition and everyone knows it!
Wes was a robber, this is all that I remember... :)
I'm sure he would have won had he written the script. Then could add a plot twist where he nails Pam too ! !
This was fixed. Wes won that contest. He had every right to try to rob the joint before he and Sissy went to Mexico.
Bud should have stayed with Pam...
He didn't love Pam. The contest was all for Sissy.
I honestly think, despite what Pam told him near the end, that she really loved him, she was tearful telling him that, the only thing was, he always loved Sissy & Sissy loved him more than Pam did. He really chose with his heart in the end & swallowed his pride like his Uncle Bob told him. Great film. :)
@@cherylhulting1301 Pam knew it too.
It’s spelled swaller, not swallow
Wes Hightower was pissed at not winning and he should have been. He won that competition and you know it. He knew it, Bud knew it, and everyone in that bar and watching the movie knew it. He had every right to rob Gilley’s as he was robbed.
But Bud's cowboy hat stayed on and Wes's fell off
they should have had LGBTQ+ in this movie
OMG TOTALLY
