Hi Elmo. I watched this video when you put it out 2 years ago and thought I may get one of those one day for home use. how old video I know but i have a question about this little amp. I heard (likely I misunderstood) that the EQ controls only affect the Ultra gain channel and not the classic gain channel, is that right? Also, how does it sound through the headphone jack? Any good?
Since it’s only 20 euros more to buy the cr instead of hr and you can also connect it to a 16 ohm cab, is it still better to buy the hr? I guess they would sound the same through the cab?
How would you compare it to the Roland micro cube in the classic stack setting that it emulates a Marshall. Is the Roland louder as it is 2 watts? With this being a real basic amp I would like to know how was the feedback from your playing style between them.

the app is a nightmare on the spark..you can only play along with youtube and the cunt cuts off and you never get a full track..so if you want that kind of amp get the katana 50 if you want many sounds..not the air coz the speakers are too small and the app is only for phones and ipads unlike the full sized katanas..you can change all the frequencies on every sound and you can match most tones it also has a 5w button ..but these type of amps do not sound like a true valve amp..they act like a valve amp but they just havent got the warmth like a valve..i have a katana 50 and thinking of also getting a dsl5cr as thats only £280..it has a 0.5w button and sounds much better than the 1w version in this video..and its the same price as the ht1r but in many reviews the dsl5cr beats the ht5r mk2. and its nearly half the price of the ht5
Couldn't click fast enough. Wondered about this amp for awhile. BTW. I just looked at Sweetwarer and it's $349.00. Not bad, but for another 150 I could get the 20 watt or the 5 watt, but for recording and wanting to keep the levels down and still get good tone, this thing would be hard to beat, especially using the line out if the cab sim is decent. Good review. I like it. A lot. It sounds great man. I bet if makes you want to play too because of the feel of the power amp and compression, etc. I love it from hearing it here, so I'm sure it sounds better in person. Please do the 5 watt too. Great reviews brother. Man, winter has hit here. No snow yet, but freezing temps. I don't mind. I could live somewhere cold in Europe like Finland. 😂🤣🤟🤟 Just teasing man. Hope you and family are well. Are you able to teach in person in the schools? Here they were, and now are going back to online teaching with Chrome books..because we are having more people contract the illness. We have horrible, horrible schools though in many instances. Where I live and in most rural areas the schools are ok, but still not like they were when I was a kid and they taught you how to think using Math, Science, Literature, Music, Physical Education, etc. Now the subjects are things like Urban black studies, etc, which provide very little value in the real world. Sad. Anyway, great review. Remember. Ayn Rand was a god. 🤣😂🤟
What is a good versatile amp that handles crunch overdrive really well and cleans? I the BOSS Katana MKIi and it is a beast! It handles overdrive well, but not so much cleans. I have the GTX100, and it is just the opposite. It handles cleans with single coils great! The gain sounds on the GTX100 are ok, not great.
ME: Watches entire video on the edge of my seat wondering if it can be hooked into a 4x12 and how it would sound. Elmo: "Of course it can be hooked into a 4x12 but I'm not going to do that." ME: MAN-BUN PONYTAIL NOOOO! SEED RUINER!!! 🎸🤘😭🤘🎸
Great video. How would this compare to a Roland micro cube gx in terms of loudness? I’m leaning more towards the DSL5cr but my micro cube can’t go past 12 o’clock on the master without potentially disturbing neighbours so perhaps the DSL5cr might be way too loud even on the low power setting?
Or should I just stick with the micro cube for home practice and get a DSL40 or something if I start playing with a band again? I had a Marshall AVT150 combo a decade ago and never had to turn it past noon even for gigs.
This seems much better than the Bugera v5, with a loop, 2 channels, and separate EQ. Sounds killer. Do you agree this is a better buy for only $120 more?
I recently moved from a house into an apartment and tried playing regular sized amps in the apartment on the absolute lowest volume setting the amp would do and it sounded like shit so I bought a little fender champion 20 on a whim just to have something to play through until I move back in the house. I’m now a huge fan of these tiny amps cranked. I’ll definitely be buying the dsl1cr. A small amp cranked sounds waaaaaaaaay better than a full size amp turned down low. I’ll probably never buy a big one again unless we’re allowed to gig again lol
You are on a good point, I agree. The only thing which surprises me is, how you “crank” it in an apartment? I have this exact dsl1cr and I can’t even turn it over 2/10 in european standart flat. It could be tiny but it’s definitely loud. I also used to have dsl1hr with speaker cabinet(1x12 greenback), unfortunately I couldn’t kept it due to its loudness and punchy output. Otherwise it was a great combination.
Elmo, your technique is very evident. Almost clinical if you purposely want it to be and maybe practice for a few days. What type of practice exercises/etudes did you use over the years to build up your technique? 4:15 and 9:20 is the crazy good 'overplaying' I am referring to
Tough question to answer. I did what I think is called the spider exercise. The 1234 thing. I have made a video on the topic: ua-cam.com/video/6WuyOwjVyys/v-deo.html
amp was a mud machine when i got online..so i knew it was time to try some different tubes.. put a 12 at7 in slot 1 and a 12ay7 in slot 2..perfect , now i can actually use the gain knob from 1 to 10. as it was all mud past 4 before. clean channel is also a little cleaner too..also a 5751 didnt change it hardly at all..its still far from tame as i play classic rock mostly..led mule sabbath trower.. didnt know marshall was that heavy sounding, love it now though..
I'm very much a bedroom guitarist, but appreciate a good valve tone. Have you looked at the Blackstar HT-1R MK II? I'm torn between that and this amp. Wondered If you had any thoughts on it. Many thanks for the video and all the best.
It is a great little amp. I have a DSL1HR (head), and I built a small but deep cabinet and installed a Celestion Blue in it. The Celestion Blue sounds awesome paired with it (12" at I think 15 watts). It also sounds good through a 2/10 cabinet (50 watts 16 ohm). It works fine through the 4/12 cab, but I've been a little concerned about running it into the 8 ohm cab for too long. The newer models of this amp say "16 ohm" whereas the older DSL 1's also listed 8. I was playing Crazy Train with a drummer through the Celestion Blue the other day, and we both exclaimed "it thumps" at the same time. Cab probably plays into that as well, and I don't really know the word I'm looking for in saying "it thumps." It sounds like it is really moving some air. I was amazed at how loud one watt could actually be. I've played live with it a few times. It is better to mic it playing live, but I really like working with a lower volume sound stage. It is also great for the studio. I have a DSL 100 also, and it is a really great amp too. If I drag out my hundred watt I end up micing it anyway.... so crowd volume is really not the point of selection. The hundred watt does give you two masters and midi presets.... but is that worth dragging that heavy assed thing out? LOL> No. The older I get, the more I appreciate lightweight equipment. And, I'm so glad that Marshall finally put out a great all-tube amp in a good price range. Great playing and sound on your video. I really like the natural finish on your Strat. Great sounding guitar. Blessings from east Tennessee.
I got the HB Tube 15, it sounds glorious but I can’t take it over 1 on the volume, it’s just too loud. Do you think this will be more home friendly Elmo?
Elmo Karjalainen Yes, there is not a world of difference between 1watt and the 15 watt mode, I suspect the 1 watt mode is closer to 5 watt. Shame as the sound is great.
I wish I had watched your videos before I got the Marshall Code 25. I had very high hopes being my first Marshall. What a major disappointment it has been!

the app is a nightmare on the spark..you can only play along with youtube and the cunt cuts off and you never get a full track..so if you want that kind of amp get the katana 50 if you want many sounds..not the air coz the speakers are too small and the app is only for phones and ipads unlike the full sized katanas..you can change all the frequencies on every sound and you can match most tones it also has a 5w button ..but these type of amps do not sound like a true valve amp..they act like a valve amp but they just havent got the warmth like a valve..i have a katana 50 and thinking of also getting a dsl5cr as thats only £280..it has a 0.5w button and sounds much better than the 1w version in this video..and its the same price as the ht1r but in many reviews the dsl5cr beats the ht5r mk2. and its nearly half the price of the ht5
The Spark is quite good, as is this. And practice is always good :)
Is that Marshall DSL1CR better than Marshall mg15fx?
Absolutely.
Yeah, going to try the 5W soon.
Winter should be here, but it's just raining all the time, plus it's too warm. And dark.
@@MrPolevaulter Ah. It's been cold here and raining too, but not dark. 😉
Awesome playing!
Thanks a lot!
it is good for AC DC ?
Probably.
Is it easy to connect this into a cabinet speaker..anyone knows.
it is, just unplug a jack in the back and plug the cabinet cable there. Be sure to know what you are doing, but it's simple
ME: Watches entire video on the edge of my seat wondering if it can be hooked into a 4x12 and how it would sound.
Elmo: "Of course it can be hooked into a 4x12 but I'm not going to do that."
ME: MAN-BUN PONYTAIL NOOOO! SEED RUINER!!! 🎸🤘😭🤘🎸
Hahhaha 🤣
Ok Budgie!
Probably get a bigger one in case you start playing with a band, maybe the DSL20.
@@MrPolevaulter thanks! Yeah I think you’re right.
@@MrPolevaulter Just got the DSL20 today and very happy with it so far! Thanks for the advice!
Cracked up a couple of times...🤣🤣 Thanks.. an amp to consider for home practicing... Has the Marshall sound and drive. 👍🙂
Bugera v5 or marshall dsl1c? What would you choose?
Not sure. Been a while since I tried them. Both are good.
@@MrPolevaulter thx mate👍
Anybody know if a 10 inch speaker will fit?
Dunno.
This seems much better than the Bugera v5, with a loop, 2 channels, and separate EQ. Sounds killer. Do you agree this is a better buy for only $120 more?
Not entirely sure. Personally I'd get the Harley Benton Tube15.
@@MrPolevaulter Thank you!
Yeah. Let's hope we get to gig again sooner rather than later.
@@purulence666 If you put it into 0,1 watt mode you can crank it.
If I crank mine at 0,1 Watt i would have to file for divorce 🤣 mine is at 12 o'clock max, with all doors shut and it's still loud for a flat 😅
Great Demo.
Sounds great.😃👍
Thanks! 👍
Sounds good 👍
Can you do a vid on your pedal board ?
I probably should.
Please do a review of the orange crush 35rt , would love to hear your opinion
I did one on the Crush 20RT.
@@MrPolevaulter yes but the 35 is different
@@thatscottishdude2058 What's the difference, except for size?
@@MrPolevaulter the 10” speaker sounds way better , but that’s all really
Elmo, your technique is very evident. Almost clinical if you purposely want it to be and maybe practice for a few days. What type of practice exercises/etudes did you use over the years to build up your technique? 4:15 and 9:20 is the crazy good 'overplaying' I am referring to
Tough question to answer. I did what I think is called the spider exercise. The 1234 thing. I have made a video on the topic: ua-cam.com/video/6WuyOwjVyys/v-deo.html
Hi does this amp fit well with pedals?
Sure
@@MrPolevaulter 👍
Great tone at 13:17 🤩. What type of pedals did you use for that Satch tone?😱
Strymon Riverside.
5:14 "lets see how much reverb it does" : sounds like 2 galaxies colliding
:D
Bugera v5 infinium or this one?
I bought the v5 and sent it back, too dark and muddy. Thinking about getting this now, it would be for home use only.
Not sure. I liked both.
Pretty sure I just caught a riff on John 5's Sugar Foot Rag @ 3:07 😜
Can I output this to an interface like focusrite?
Yeah. From the D.I. I seem to remember it had one. Didn't try it though, 'cause I don't use those much. Should probably have checked it out.
@@MrPolevaulter which port do I use on the amp
@@pocketman5510 Line out. Should be on the back.
@@MrPolevaulter hey thank you, would it play through the speaker too then or no
@@pocketman5510 I don't know.
Great video
amp was a mud machine when i got online..so i knew it was time to try some different tubes..
put a 12 at7 in slot 1 and a 12ay7 in slot 2..perfect , now i can actually use the gain knob from 1 to 10.
as it was all mud past 4 before. clean channel is also a little cleaner too..also a 5751 didnt change it
hardly at all..its still far from tame as i play classic rock mostly..led mule sabbath trower..
didnt know marshall was that heavy sounding, love it now though..
Cool bananas :)
Is it the light or is your fretboard extremely sculpted?
Scalloped.
I'm very much a bedroom guitarist, but appreciate a good valve tone. Have you looked at the Blackstar HT-1R MK II? I'm torn between that and this amp. Wondered If you had any thoughts on it. Many thanks for the video and all the best.
Haven't tried that, no.
perfect yngwie part
Thanks!
would prefer to hear the amp without any pedals so as to get a better sound and picture of the amp output
Err...like you did for much of the video from the beginning?
Great amp. Can play any style with it. Clean or dirty. The reverb makes it that much better.
Yep.
Hi Elmo. Which one would u recommend the most, this DSL or the Marshall origin 5C? Better one to plug some overdrive pedal... Thanks!
I thought the Origin 5 was poor, so DSL.
@@MrPolevaulter well the 35rt orange the choosen one. So happy !
A great Adam Jones (Tool) tone anyone with this baby ? I get mine tomorrow or the other day :)
Thanks a lot!!!
No worries!
HB TUBE 15 or this Marshall ?
HB.
Thanks :)
I think once you go below the 5 watt 10 inch speaker dsl, it’s too small and Tinney sounding.
Going to try the 5W soonish.
Go with Monoprice at that price point, same features, 12in speaker 👌
I got the HB Tube 15, it sounds glorious but I can’t take it over 1 on the volume, it’s just too loud. Do you think this will be more home friendly Elmo?
I think so. It's too loud even on 1 watt?
Elmo Karjalainen Yes, there is not a world of difference between 1watt and the 15 watt mode, I suspect the 1 watt mode is closer to 5 watt. Shame as the sound is great.
Would probably be a good home recording amp huh? Or do you think the 5 watt would be better?
Dunno. Either should work I think.
Great review! Can this amp be used with headphones?
I wish I had watched your videos before I got the Marshall Code 25. I had very high hopes being my first Marshall. What a major disappointment it has been!
Sorry to hear.
Can you use headphones with that amp ?
I seem to remember it having a headphone out. Not sure though. Google it.
The speaker will Sound better. For Home i prefer it over a 12“ speaker tbh.
Your playing is awesome i can only dream
