Your reviews are brilliant. They generally answer any questions I have. I normally go though others people review first and then lets you have the final say.
Thanks for the effort.
That's great feedback. Thank you!
look at that beautiful cat lying so comfortably on the back of your sofa. So cute!
Like he owns it!
Thank you again for another great video. Quick question regarding clear image zoom. Can you use that along with Aps-c mode? Meaning small zoom after changing to APS-c? Thanks in advance.
Yes you can, actually
Hi Dustin,
Thank you for the review! I have a question: could this be used as a dedicated remote trigger? There may be some instances where I shoot top-down angles for videos or photos, and am wondering if this would be versatile in that regard?
You can use it that way. I actually use this one: ua-cam.com/video/s5CFHv-ZF7U/v-deo.html for that purpose, as the remote section can be separated and used as a dedicated BT remote.
Interesting accessory. Good for travel. Considering buying it myself.
Thank you for the review, Ferrari owner!
Yes, I do own a Ferrari :)
as far as i know this is the first wireless product that can utilize the custom buttons. i’ve been looking for something like this to toggle focus hold for gimbal / run and gun work.
hope they make more products like this in the future that give some flexibility in controlling af and recording. great find
I do, too. We've not really seen the potential of bluetooth leveraged in cameras very well.
Any idea if the camera will pair with the grip and your phone at the same time? While hiking I use the Sony app for tracking GPS / Location Info and I'm curious if they would both work at the same time. Thanks for your informative videos.
I didn't specifically test that, but I see no reason why it wouldn't. I often have multiple Bluetooth devices connected simultaneously, and the amount of data flowing back and forth on either of these things is minimal.
I haven't been able to find any info about the connection process online. Do you have to turn bluetooth on/off every time you want to use the grip? Is the camera's battery life noticeably impacted by the bluetooth connection? It looks great, but if it takes a long time to connect every time you turn on the camera then it seems more effort than it's worth.
Hi Scott, I didn't have a problem with a long connection. Once it is synced, it should be automatic. I didn't notice a big battery drain.
Would the GP-VPT2BT work with RX100 Mark 6? Media release only mentioned about the Mark 7. Do you have any information on it? Or if you can do a test and let us know? Thanks for the video !
Hi there, that's a question for Sony. I don't know the answer to that.
Thanks for the great review. Do you think that would be an overkill for a Sony RX100 VII? Thanks.
It's only overkill if you don't use it.
Thanks for the video Dustin. May I ask what is the legacy lens at 5:55 ? Thanks man.
Ahh, it isn't actually a legacy lens. It's a brand new lens from Pergear that isn't yet on the market. Stay tuned!
Hi Dustin. Great review as always. Seams like a good remote I can use with my Sony a7R3 but only one question I could not find answer anywhere - How far it can work when detached from camera? Thank you.
I don't know that precisely, but my typical experience with Bluetooth is that the range is roughly 30-50 feet (10-15 meters) depending on how much obstructions there are between the two communicating devices.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you!
Does this work with the Sony ZV1 Mark II ?
Thank you for your video. You said you used it with an a6500. I have one too and it won’t pair for some reason. And now I’m reading on the Sony website that it’s not a compatible camera. Just wondering how it worked for you.
Jeannine - unfortunately I not longer have the grip on hand...and sold the a6500 last year, so I don't recall enough to answer that.
Is there a way to turn off the grip if you don’t plan on using it for a while? Or do you have to take the battery out to turn it off completely so it doesn’t drain the battery just sitting there unused. I understand the battery last a long time, but I didn’t see any way to turn it on and off.
I think that it automatically shuts off when not in use.
Haven't seen anyone try this attached to the bottom of a gimbal - in the place of the mini tripods that are often used. Having access to the C1 (programmed to as AF/MF toggle?) or zoom button could be useful as touching the camera would cause it to shake.
That could be an interesting application.
Thanks for the review... How is is powered?
Does shutter button have two stage action like camera?
How far away can the remote operate from camera?
Will it work simultaneously with Image Edge remote viewfinder?
Would love to mount my phone screen onto the grip with remote viewing, while controlling camera from the Sony GP-VPT2BT separated from camera. Will bluetooth operation and wifi remote viewing work simultaneously?
That's a lot of questions, but I'll answer what I can. It is powered by (I believe) a CR2032 lithium battery. The fact that it is only having to power sending a digital signal should indicate that it can run for some time without that battery needing to be replaced. Yes, the shutter button is two stage. I'm not sure the exact range, though a typical Bluetooth range is around 10M (34 feet or so). Yes, I believe that you can run Image Edge at the same time. I didn't test WiFi and BT simultaneously, so I'm not sure about that.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you very very much for your reply Mr Abbott.
Hi, may I know how heavy is your camera + the len? cos i wanna know what is the maximum weight it can support. Million thanks!!
I tried a number of combinations on there. There may be a maximum weight listed on the website.
Hi! Do you think it is worth buying to use if I will buy sony zv1 or is there a better alternative with the same price range? Wanted to start vlogging so I do not know much about these kinds of things
I'm not aware of a lot of competing products. I think this one is worth checking out.
How about a6600 plus sigma 16mm in a small rig cage with a rode mic pro plus on top? Think it an handle it?
I don't see why not.
Thank you Mr Abbott
You're welcome.
I use back button focusing. Will holding in the photo button on the grip work with back button focusing?
Rick, that's a great question, but unfortunately one I don't know the answer to. I would suspect it will operate as standard even with your setup, but I don't know that definitively and don't have the sample on hand to play with anymore.
Once you paired camera and stick and switch off the camera. Do i have to paired again each time that i want to use it? Thanks.
I don't think so. It should pair automatically.
Hello. Excellent review. I have the RXO ii (lovely little thing, especially with an SDXC UHS 2 card installed) ... and i also have the Sony GP VPT1 wired tripod. Its cool, but the cord leaves the jack door open and i dont like that.
The only question i have for the bluetooth tripod is how much does it drain the battery of the camera and/or tripod? If hardly any draw, then this will be the new accessory for me.
Thank you in advance, you have excellent videos and great style as well.
:)
There is minimal drain. Bluetooth is a very efficient tech.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you! Your video was great! Thank you for your reply!
Nice, might be a useful substitute when I don't want to travel with the big tripod.
For sure.
HI Dustin, can it be used in Alpha 1 camera? for wireless connection
Yes it can.
Nice review and I'm considering buying it for my next trip. I do have questions about battery life though. How long will the batteries last? Can I use rechargeable batteries? I understand that this grip uses the CR2032 batteries.
The good news is that all you are powering is sending an electronic signal. I suspect that, like a garage door opener (also often using CR2032) that batteries will need to be replaced in months or even years rather than often.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you
Is this a general grip product like Universal? Or it will only pair with Sony Cameras...
To the best of my knowledge I believe that it is designed solely for Sony cameras.
Are cameras like Sony A7 III or IV not too heavy for this grip?
No. None of Sony's bodies are radically different in weight.
Can this working on the zoom for tamron 28-75 F2.8 ?
No, it is not a power zoom.
I have Sony ASIII Camera with 28-105 F4 G lens. I am unable to zoom . Is there any settingI need to change? Thanks in advance
It controls the "clear zoom" within the camera, not the zoom of the lens.
Thanks for your prompt response
Will this work with Fujifilm x series mirrorless cameras ??
Not that I'm aware of.
Ah, the name - dreamed up by the same team that came up with that old menu favourite, the intuitive "Swt.V/H AF Area." (??) Many reviewers have offered to help Sony with their nomenclature! Thanks for the review on this Dustin- it looks like a fun and useful accessory!
Ferrari was very restrained throughout!
That's another classic name
Apparently not working with the A6300, which would've been nice as I'd rather have this than the old wired grip.
Pre-Bluetooth?
Thanks for reviewing this new Sony product. Honestly, for me, adding any sort of attachment to a compact travel camera like the Sony a6600 is something I try to avoid. The excellent compact, portable Feiyu g6 max gimbal costs $279 and includes the tripod that easily screws into the base of the "stick." The size of this true Feiyu gimbal is just about the same length as the Sony stick! The reviewed Sony GP-VPT2BT costs $140 and does not have any sort of true image stabilization. I probably will not buying this product, but rather a small portable gimbal, again such as the Feiyu product. Again, though, my thanks to this reviewer for detailing the Sony "stick."
I'm glad it helped.
Hi. Can be use on sony a 6300? Thank you.
I believe so, but you might want to check the list to be sure.
Hi, would you recommend this in 2022 or something else?
It’s still good, though there are some third party alternatives that I’ve reviewed that do pretty much the same thing for cheaper (look for my review of the Inkee Ironbee)
One thing you may forget to mention is while changing battery or remove the SD card, the handle have to remove form the camera before open the cover, it is the downside and the designer haven't solve this problem before the production.
That's true, but only for cameras where the SD card is on the bottom...which wasn't true of either of the cameras I tested on it.
Haha. You weren't lying. The grip's name sure is a tongue twister.
No kidding!
Just look at the cat's face when Dustin says the name :-) Says it all, doesn't it?
Is that the new Venus 65mm macro lens?
Why yes it is, and it is pretty amazing.
3.3 pds payload limit
Is this compatible with the RX100 VI?
I don't know the answer to that. I think there is a compatability list on the website.
sirve para a6100 ?
Si
Will this be used in Sony Handycam
If you are asking if it can be used with a Sony Handycam, I don't actually know the answer. I guess it would depend if the particular camera were bluetooth enabled and would allow for bluetooth control.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for reply
Ferrari ?! Haha and shure a nice House too. Thanks for the good review the Sony GP &%%$§ no talking tounges without an interpreter :)
Thank you!
If you have a power zoom lens like the Sony 18-105, the remote will control the power zoom.
I believe that is true.
@@DustinAbbottTWI On the A7iiii, it works with the RMTP1BT blue tooth remote control that have the same buttons . So I'm pretty sure it works the same with the GP-VPT2BT.
Does it work with smartphones?
To my knowledge it is designed for use with Sony cameras and not other Bluetooth devices.
It is waterproof?
I didn't see any mention of that.
Dustin Abbott
Um yes, that's me :)
What about the bateryyyyy??? 8 minutes and nothing about battery life...
I did mention it, actually. There's little that I could test in a few weeks, however, as the battery is expected to last six months or more.
That thing looks flimsy and plasticky :(
Just a question of time, before something breaks and drops your A7*** to the ground?
It’s actually not plasticky at all, but I can understand that it looks pretty small.
As far as I know it uses a coin type battery. The coin battery makes it a deal breaker for me. If they don't come with a rechargable battery it's a no-no for me.
That's true, though I doubt you will be changing it very often. All it is powering is a wireless signal.
KM Wong
Same here TBH
I feel like after few hours of Normal use the battery has to be changed 🤷♂️ . Can someone please correct me on how long the battery last
Sony with Bluetooth or wifi on drains the battery very fast which makes these things useless as 20 minutes then dead battery is so lame.
That wasn't my experience AT ALL. Battery life is expected to last nearly six months, and I didn't have the battery go dead at all during my whole test period.
cat's fallen asleep...
:)
