Lawn Soil PH

  • Testing soil PH in your lawn is not hard, but to have a healthy lawn your soil PH needs to be regulated or your grass can not get the needed nutrients. See more info here: bit.ly/2UGZHeF
    Soil pH is especially important because it enables a plant’s ability for nutrient uptake. If all of the nutrients a plant needs are available and the pH is off, it can’t pick up those essential ions. Soil pH affects nutrient absorption in soil. That’s why we’re outlining a basic understanding of what pH is and how it can affect your lawn.

    Your video and article don't explain what to do when you have very alkaline clay soil like in Phoenix, Arizona. I've heard of adding gypsum, sulphur or even just compost to increase acidity but I'm not sure what is best. Suggestions?

    Doc, when I first moved to GA didn’t know much about lawns or what I was doing, because it wasn’t getting thick. I went out and purchased lime every year and put it down, thinking I was doing good by my lawn. My front yard has a ph level of 7, 7.5 and 8, I haven’t tested the back lawn yet. I purchased several soil test kits, but I better send my soil to the extension office. I think you said Bermuda loves a 6.5 ph level, so I googled and it stated put sulfur down if my ph level is too high. I hired a lawn company thinking it would thicken my lawn, which hasn’t happened, so I ordered princess 77 Bermuda seeds and I plan to over-seed about mid June after the pre emergent is gone. I’m explaining because you said don’t over-seed Bermuda, but I’ve been in this house since 2012 and my lawn isn’t thick and never has been. I’m frustrated!!

    Doc thank you for all your good lawn info. I bought the ph meter , the lawn was low on ph so I bought a few bags of limestone. The question I have is how long you have to wait to recheck the ph level after you have put limestone on your grass ?

    Another good video Doc. I follow you even though I have a tall fescue lawn and will be murdering the Bermuda infiltrators with Pylex in May. I have 5 bags of Humic DG and 5 bags of Barricade DG ready to put down in Randallstown Md once the ground temps warm up. Is it possible for Anderson's to make the new fertilizer in the 40lb bags also? It's easier for us guys with bigger lawns instead of buying 10 18lb bags to cover 50,000 sq ft I can purchase 5 40lb bags like the Humic and Barricade.

    Interesting content as always. Last summer, I tried to seed
    my lawn with Scotts gold glove Bermuda, it came out patchy. Is this because of
    the seed itself, it just hasn't spread. Still got more lawn to seed. So was
    wondering if I should get something else or continue with it. Any suggestions
    would be helpful. Also will you be doing a seeding video in the future? thx.

      It's tough to seed Bermuda. You have to till and water a lot. Then it's still a hope and pray.

      Humic simply adds "carbon" to the soil. It improves the soil and really does nothing else. Put it down anytime.

    Do you have a chart showing how much liquid Calcium to apply? A chart similar to the ones the granular products have? As an example: Pounds of Limestone Needed to Raise pH (per 1,000 Square Feet) from 5.5 to 6.5 in Clay Soil is 100 lbs (80 lbs for Loam; 30 lbs for Sand)

    • @HowTowithDoc
      @HowTowithDoc  5 років тому +2

      There's almost no foliage... so it really doesn't matter. Also, the majority of foliar uptake is done within the first 6 hours and the rain was not coming in until later that night.

    • @briano9879
      @briano9879 5 років тому

    That's a nice pH meter but it wouldn't work in my yard! Mine ranges from 8.1 to 8.3. It will take 5-6 years of maximum (10#/1000SF/yr) sulfur treatments to get the pH down to the good range for Bermuda. If your pH is already adequate, or low, consider yourselves lucky!
