Doublewide6, thank you for this video! My husband got out to mow a overdue lawn, well, lawnmower would not start! After messing around, cleaning, checking, I find this video and saw how you tested the spark plug without a tester. We changed it and he is mowing it now! One thing to note, for us dummies, ha ha, make sure you make contact with the metal, just like you demonstrated, or you will get shocked. Thank you! Love youtube and nice people who like to share ;)
Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU I followed your instructions to the letter and now I'm mowing better than ever. You saved me the cost of a new lawn mower. ( not that I wouldn't like one ) I plan on watching more of your videos.
My Troy Bilt was running fine. Shut it off. Went to restart and it wouldn't budge. Found it has intermittent to no spark. Gonna replace the coil. Thanks for sharing
Old video but brilliant for the older magneto mowers. Had no spark - traced it back to an electrical connection I had made my self with electrical tape (from the magneto to spark plug)). This video was EXTREMELY helpful narrowing down my problem. I had used electrical (plastic) tape which is normally OK BUT heat from the the mower engine had caused a chemical reaction with the metal connection and electrical tape glue causing problems. My mower was a throw-away (was in the rubbish when I found it) and the previous owner said it just wouldn't start. Cleaning the magneto metal base posts as per this video was a big help too. I used a multi-meter inline from the magneto to the spark plug to check for spark. Replaced gooey connection I had with a metal connector. All good. THANKS for VIDEO!!! Really excellent! Luv my old mower !subscribed!
Thanks for the help I grew up with a dad and Uncle that worked on small engines for extra money so that was 40 years ago and I forgot alot of it. Your video helped me remember alot thanks!
Doublewide...thanks for your small engine videos. They are the only ones that are really comprehensive. Trying to learn the business your videos are invaluable. Please keep them coming!
Thanks very much. Was having problems getting no spark on my mower and thanks to your video I was able to diagnose a bad ignition wire. Saved me getting slapped with a maintenance bill at the mower shop 👍
10/01/2021 @ 1:25 a.m. I did what you were referring to on the kill switch wire for the ignition coil. It works, The lawnmower started right up after about 10 years sitting in one spot. Thanks again for your video referring to the kill switch wire on the ignition coil. 10/01/2021 @ 1:25a.m. .
Thank you very much, you helped me solve my problem. The dead handle lead on the mag was shorted. So again we’ll done both of us, keep up with the videos. Regards Ray GAWN United Kingdom
Thank you very much for the explanation.Disconnected the kill switch green wire and mower started. Temporarely and until the short found, I installed a waterproof ON/OFF switch on the green wire to shut off the mower. Thank you again.
Hey thanks f\to people like you for taking your own time to post things like this to help others. i was given a $500.00 lawn mower because neighbor said did not start because of you bad coil. i sold it on craiglist $350.00 thanks so much
Thanks!!! I was ready to junk the riding mower, I tried EVERYTHING, until I filed the two holes that hold the coil to the block, riding mower started on the first turn of the key (scared the hell out of me, because I wasn't expecting it to start)
Hey, thank you so much for this video! Especially for a tip about disconnecting kill switch cable and giving it a try. I was able to fix my lawnmower by simply adjusting kill switch connector and a bit of polishing...
Nice tip about filing the posts most people wouldn't get that its kind of like cleaning the battery posts and clamps on your car. Keep connections clean parts will last longer. Bravo
Great Job, and hey nice family!!! I'm hoping that is my problem because I've cleaned the carb and all the tubing plus changed the oil which most people I know never do. But I'm thinking the coil is suspect because I have a brand new plug in it. Always Thankful when someone takes the time to video a remedy and show where to go when most of us are lost. Thanks again !!!
I mentioned that rust on the end laminations will not affect the magnetic field. Although rust will restrict the magnetic field because of the strength of the magnets it will not stop the lawnmower from working. Where the base of the coil mounts on the posts it needs to be free of corrosion because if the coil is not grounded it will not work. This video is designed to help people not "mis inform the public. There are many people that have fixed their lawnmowers because of this video.
Thanks for this video. I had cleaned the carburetor, gas line etc etc and it still wouldn't start/spark. After watching I removed the cowl and realigned the coil and now it starts first pull. Thank you for ending my frustration.
Thanks for the video. My "no spark" was due to the shut off arm not pressing the kill switch enough, thereby it was always in "kill mode". Fixed it with part of an ink pen. Pulling the kill wire as suggested produced spark so i knew where to look.
Thanks, great video and very helpful. I just disassembled the coil and assembled again the same one with the business card gap adjustment and the mawer is running now fine.
yep. the wire to the coil was shorted to the engine....I couldn't see where, but the insulation must have broken down between engine heat (it was laying in contact with the top of the engine) and dirt/oil. This video save me a lot of brain fatigue and money. Many thanks!
Great video very clear instructions , I have the same problem at the moment I will follow the instructions thanks 👍🏴 it’s great to see your family made it and that they are healthy n happy
Good video. Nice family. Enjoy- they grow fast.I had to replace the cutoff cable. When I put the brake bracket back on I must have left the wire in a bad spot probable rubbing on the flywheel and slowly wearing off the insulation on the wire ( it was a bear to get that brake assembly up in under the flywheel.)Maybe there is a trick to it but I never did it before. It ran for about an hour and then quit. No spark on plug cleaned everything, re gapped it . Still no spark. I looked real good and saw the wire had been gouged and must of been the flywheel and the wire was bare. I fixed that with some solder and shrink wrap. Still no spark. Do you think the bare wire shorted out the ignition module because there is no spark on the coil now? Is there a way to ohm out a module? Also thanks for taking the time to make the video's and have a great day!
09/30/2021 ,Thanks for saying something about that kill switch wire because I was thinking that was a power wire it is 2:27 a.m. right now but I will be trying it doing daylight hours . This is the only video I seen I want UA-cam that explain that Kill switch wire on UA-cam. Thanks a lot 09/30/2021 @ 2:27 a.m. .
This video is good. Replacing a lawn mower coil is not hard at all. Most manufacturers on mowers have User manuals and part numbers online. Just identify model number and the part need and order through Amazon or wherever.
Great help with this. Thank you. The video is clear and process well explained. I implemented one more thing and that is to put liquid soap in the sleeve prior to wire R&R. This helps the old wire slide out and then the new one inserted into the spark plug protective sleeve. No need to split it open. I then used a can of air duster to blow out the moisture.
Thanks for the video it has helped me, I thought I was going to have to change the coil but your tip about the cut out wire shorting was my problem which I had missed. Checked it again after watching your video and it was bare in two places, Taped it up and I'm away. I live in the United Kingdom, Great Britain, England whatever you call it. I watched another video about your son, I hope all is well with you and your family, if I can donate please tell me how? Steve.
I cleaned and gapped points and replaced coil in my old John Deere 56 riding mower. I can't see a spark on the plug or spark tester but I sure get a jolt if I hold the plug wire when I pull the cord. How is that possible?
I disconnected my kill switch and it started right up. It is a pain to pull the plug wire to shut off. The wiring on the kill switch looks good. So how did you get it back to normal.
Thanks. It was the kill switch that was not working. So fired up the mower with the switch disconnected and bam! It worked. Just found that the part clamping the cable down broke and tied it down with a clamp. All better.
doublewide6 Yeah buddy you got me you made it so simple and you have me access to the the parts. Great job and beautiful Family. God bless you and your Family
doublewide6 Thank you for sharing your knowledge I appreciate you God bless you and your Family you made me look smart in front of the Wife again I was losing ground. 😉
Hello, I have a Tecumseh engine on my mower which is a Champion Self Propelled 46cm. I have a spark and I have taken the carburetor off and cleaned it. When trying to start it it occasionally 'fires' but won't run for any length of time and also floods the spark plug. Is it possible for the coil or the spark plug to be breaking down under load? I've tried another spark plug (second hand) and the problem is the same. Any help would be great. Thanks
Changed spark plug, changed ignition coil... Craftsman 5.5 .. Runs when I disconnect green ground wire from bottom of ignition coil. Checked Brake assembly and no wires broken .. just not sure what the brake assembly should look like and what wires should be touching what... perhaps a contact is not sitting correctly?.. Can't find diagrams online either.. Any ideas?
I have a push mower with a B&S engine that will not start 9 times out of 10. The carb is clean and the fuel is fresh. If there is fuel in the tank it barely picks it up and stalls out. If I spray carb cleaner into the intake the engine will start and run good. When I release the lever for a split second the engine immediately stalls and will not restart. I also here small poping sounds. Is that an ignition coil problem?
I have a John Deere ant 622 gator with no spark I replaced the ignition coil twice and the spark plug multiple times still no spark any suggestion thanks
i have tried everything, i cleaned the magnets and set the gap, i am pretty sure i need to rebuild the carb. i need to test for spark first, if that dont work then i need to do the carb thing.
before tearing into this, I moved the kill switch wire and it started right up. I will dig further to find the point of a bare wire for a permanent repair when the temps drop around here.
I've done everything recommended, certain I had it under control. New coil, .009 gap, new spark plug, filed clean the mounting posts, handlebar actuated kill switch seems to open and close as per a continuity switch - probe on flywheel and on lead to bottom of coil had continuity when the handlebar lever was in "shutoff" mode, none when bar was in "on" position. Still no hint of a spark. Guess next step is remove the flywheel? Haven't tried running with the ground wire disconnected. What is next?
+Bryan Byrd To possibly add more value to this valuable thread, two full frustrating days and $85 later, a lawn mower shop determined the coil provided by Sears was not any good, and he put in a used one and the mower runs fine. Sears claims the part number 440505 is the right one for engine model number 143404162, but I never had a single spark. Maybe it was defective? Good luck., and thanks doublewide.
My thoughts and prayers for your son. I hope he gets better soon. Thanks for the video. Did I hear correctly, rust on the coil or magnet on flywheel will not make any difference? My mower starts when cold, but shuts down 3-5 minutes later. Thanks!
At the risk of asking a really stupid question, I am going to anyway. I replaced coil, spark plug, checked the "kill wire" and everything looked good. Still no spark. When I took off the flywheel I noticed the shaft from the motor was very rusted and the inside hub of the flywheel was corroded. I sanded them both and now the mower runs. Does the flywheel have to have good contact with the motor shaft to create spark? Or did I inadvertently do something in between to fix the problem when I took the flywheel off?

Thanks! You helped me find the problem with my kill switch. I always appreciate a $0 repair job.
this was super-helpful. I took my mower apart, disconnected the kill switch wire from the coil and it started right up.
We inherited a near new mower when we bought a house that did not run. Removed the kill switch wire off the coil and eureka!
Hi from NZ,

10/01/2021 @ 1:25 a.m. I did what you were referring to on the kill switch wire for the ignition coil. It works, The lawnmower started right up after about 10 years sitting in one spot. Thanks again for your video referring to the kill switch wire on the ignition coil. 10/01/2021 @ 1:25a.m. .
Replaced the coil and still no spark. While reviewing this video, I filed down the perches the magneto mounts to, and voila. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the video. Pulled my coil, took pics of the model number, filed the mounting post, started right up.
My trouble was the kill switch. Thanks very much for this video. I couldn't have done it without you!!!!
Great video! Thanks so much for the basics. Perfect timing with the "fan club" too, they're lucky to have such a knowledgeable man.
Thank you very much, you helped me solve my problem. The dead handle lead on the mag was shorted.
So again we’ll done both of us, keep up with the videos.

also try cleaning the coil with a rotating wire brush it works for me and clean the fly wheel magnets this works too
We will do! Thanks!

Did you replace the coil and fix it before you sold it?
Great job. Easy to follow and to the point.
THANK YOU ! FOR THAT DEMONSTRATION WELL DONE !!!,THIS WILL BE A HELP TO OTHERS !!!!!
THANKS for reminding me I have to ground the plug to see a spark! Problem Solved! (Or at least on to the next step!)

Just used this video to fix my mower so good job and thank you
My mower is starting again, thanks for this video!
Well explained and good pointers especially using the business card for coil positioning.
Very well made VDO, easy to understand,, Thanks for sharing..
Beautiful family! Thanks for the video, easy to follow and useful.

Thanks for the info. I was pretty stumped, but I just got my own mower started after following some of your tips. Great videos!
Thank you this help me lawns all mowed now
I enjoyed this video. Im looking for a new coil.
Great vid! Thanks for posting, I was about to buy a new mower till I seen this vid and noticed it was a short in the kill switch!
Thanks for the tips. Mine just died and no spark I know what to look for now.
Thanks from West Australia
Thanks for the video it has helped me, I thought I was going to have to change the coil but your tip about the cut out wire shorting was my problem which I had missed. Thanks, man! My mower got spark. I've cleaned(sand papered down) those two contacts, sure I got spark? Thanks yo my UA-cam friends!
You are awesome for posting this. Thank you so much sir❤
So what would happen if the coil was to far away or to close to the flywheel?
Business card. Worked like a charm, Thank you!
Thanks for the good information and easy to follow presentation.
pulled the kill wire off started just like new! what is the procedure to fix this problem?
A very informative video, and a great looking family. Thank you. :-)

If my lawnmower disk rusted will it affect the spark
Thanks. It was the kill switch that was not working. So fired up the mower with the switch disconnected and bam! It worked. Just found that the part clamping the cable down broke and tied it down with a clamp. All better.
paul l I'm happy the video helped.

Will you get a shock testing the spark plug?
Excellent video! Thanks so much!!
Do the valves have to do anything with no spark?

haha great ending. Hi wife! What? Yeah! (kid) What? Awesome vid, gonna try it out!
I had the same lawnmower. Where can I buy a replacement Gas tank? Thanks
good vid, thats probably whats wrong with my mower

i have tried everything, i cleaned the magnets and set the gap, i am pretty sure i need to rebuild the carb. i need to test for spark first, if that dont work then i need to do the carb thing.
worked perfect! Thanks very easy to do with your explanation
Corey Gorr great to hear. Thanks
hi double wide six wat should i do to get a push mower going that starts wen you put gas in the carb please help my old mower blew up on me?
Maybe Santa will bring you a tripod for Christmas? If you've been good😉
Thank you Thank you Thank you! I actually had a bad kill switch. I thought.. there's no way this is it, but let me try it. Boom first pull!!
how are interchangeable are those coils? I've got an old one from an old mower, can I use it?
Yeah
before tearing into this, I moved the kill switch wire and it started right up. I will dig further to find the point of a bare wire for a permanent repair when the temps drop around here.
