- Metal in Motion - I wanted to show you guys how I diagnose an engine that has no spark to the spark plug. You need to determine if the problem is on the kill circuit which grounds the coil and turns the engine off, or is it the coil itself. Although this is on a push mower, the same method applies to riding mowers, pressure washers, go karts, generators, weedeaters, blowers, etc. They all use this same or similar design, and have a ground wire attached to the coil. When the on/off switch is turned off it grounds the wire going to the coil and the engine shuts down. KEEP YOUR FEET CLEAR OF THE MOWER BLADES WHEN TESTING!

Josh is a very good instructor. Clear, concise, shows things up close and stays right on subject. Not a lot of hemming and hawing during the instruction. Now I know what I need to get my pressure washer sparking. 👍
Great video. No nonsense. No blabbing. Straight to the point. Love it. Thanks.
Excellent video. Straight to the point. No stupid gimmicks or daft music. No drama just getting on with what you need to do. A refreshig change!
Finally, a video that explains a coil test in detail and with no Bs. Thanks a million.
So much better of a diagnostics video than even the ones by briggs. This was worth a like and subscribe.
All of human advancement traces to the elements demonstrated in this video - accurate* knowledge transfer! Thank you!
WOW! Hands down best freak'n no-nonsense no spark diagnosis and fix I've found. No need to look further!
I would like to thank you for the test instrument info to connect to the coil. I’m heading to O’Reillys parts store. Thanks again, I wish more would share there sources, on videos.
Excellent video, clear voice, no waste of time and the detail in the instructions is extremely helpful. Thanks.
This video earned you a subscriber. Very detailed and knowledgeable troubleshooting tips. Most of the internet is filled with "cleaned the carburetor" or "change the oil". This is the first bit of advice I've seen that goes into the issues surrounding the ignition coil, ground wire and flywheel.
Hoping this will fix the issue with my mower. I have a spark plug tester coming in tomorrow. Thanks for the video and most importantly, the knowledge you shared with us!
Okay ....Soooo this is EXACTLY why there's small engine repair Pros . You knew everything you were talking about. Right down to the PO obvious experience you have, with the business card and the magnet sucking the coil on to it .
bravo sir
Your method works if you have a spare coil. You can test the existing coil with an ohm meter. Connect one lead to the inside of the spark plug boot making sure you contact the metal inside. Connect the other probe to the engine block. The resistance should be around 3-4 K ohms. THis test can be done without removing the coil.
Have you tested a Honda 4 terminal coil ?
Trying to figure it out
Ohmmeter test doesn't work on my coil. I have two cylinder and one side works the other side doesn't, so I assume one coil is good. They both fail the ohmmeter test, even the good one. Swapped polarity, same thing.
The clearest and most precise explanation for this ignition problem that I have seen here, thank you.
Thank you for making such a great, informative video! Based on your video I was able to diagnose and repair my father's mower. Same issue as here... bad ignition coil. Followed your instructions to the letter and it runs perfectly now.
Thanks for the vid. Starting new side hustle with first trial. Cleaned old carb, nothing, put new carb, spark and filter, nothing, now I’m informed of an essential part, the coil. Can’t wait to test it now.
My field of expertise is HVACR, and this video solved my problem... almost replaced an ignition coil and I had a bad ground due to braking system... Thanks!!
Thanks for this great video - I watched it once, quickly got my new coil installed and gapped, then the mower started on the first pull.
Excellent video. Very clear and understandable. You have saved me a lot of time and some money. I just had a bad ground wire.
These videos are good in case something goes wrong, when you type in YT search, you get helpful videos like this. 👍
Thanks Josh for your very helpful video. The spark plug tester you used takes all of the guess work out. With or without the orange spark light you know without a doubt if the ignition coil is working. Thanks again. Jerry.
This is an AWESOME video. I've been slowly increasing my knowledge on repairing 2 and 4 cycle engines. When simple steps lead to improvements like illustrated here, there's an instant learning curve. Well presented. Straight to the point. Well done .
Excellent video Josh! Your videos have helped me more than once. Thanks 🙏
Thank you. After watching several videos I finally found the one that helped me solve my problem in language that I could understand!
Great explanation of exactly what happens with the coil connectors and wires connected or not for definitive diagnosis.
Excellent presentation perfectly done... no crazy music... thank you for the video right to the point
Before installing a new coil, always check the gap first. I just had one where the coil had vibrated and was touching the flywheel. Re-gaped and was fine.
Hell yea...check the gap...when the fly wheels vibrating and I've regaped her... ill roll over an go to sleep
Great video very clear and right to the point. Thanks again just replaced my coil.
Very thorough video
I have an older walk behind Weedtrimmer & it has the same coil&flywheel set up thank you!
Fantastic video - So well explained and easy to follow
Thank You Josh, mine was a dirty contact, I have sparky back now. Great video!
Must agree Josh that this is an excellent video. Have a JX 75 John Deere 20 years old walk behind in Australia. spent over $500 doing it back up because they are so good but suspect the coil is stuffed. will now test but the coils are over $200 in Ozz. Thanks for this.
Thanks a lot, Josh this vid saved a lot of shop money today, took your advice and walla my pressure washer is up and running again thanks a lot, Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and yours
I appreciate how you demonstrated on how to diagnose now back to my garden tillet
Thanks!
You made my day!
Your video helped me to find a problem in the switch from the handle ("Dead mans hand" in Swedish) that gave a flickering ground signal to the coil (Random ignition was my problem but now itis solved!)
Clear. Very well explained and to the point. Thumbs up !!!
Great job man,... You ought to do more videos, You explain that very well
Solved my issue i removed the ignition coil and forgot to set the gap. Thank you for your great video
Best No BS video I've seen. Thanks !
Great channel! So easy to listen to and comprehend.

VERY GOOD DEMOSTRATION ,. THANK.YOU JOSH !!! THIS VIDEO WILL HELP ALOT OF PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM !!!!!
Thx , new subscriber, I am fixing the exact mower right now. I’ve had it running twice before . Not sure if her kids sabotage her mower and say it doesn’t work so they don’t have to cut the grass . We are going to follow your lead on this and tell her to never let any of her kids touch it ever again. The woodruff key was broken off this time . W t heck. He must drive it down the concrete stairs hahaha
Excellent, very good instructions. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Excellent Video presentation Dr. Phil
Good job. Exactly what I needed to see. Thank You
Thnx Dude. Very in-depth & easy to follow.
The only thing you didn't mention is if like you are located near salty air, a build up of rust can form on both the magnets and the coil contact face.

Good stuff! Thanks Josh!
Well done video, thanks.
Very good info and video. I have collected 3 newer lawnmowers and have them in my barn; none have any spark. I am wondering why coil failure with these small engines is so common? But, in seeing this video, maybe it isn't the coil, but I'll bet it is. Thanks again.
I'm about to test my ignition system on my craftsman push mower thank you for this video. I was mowing a clients lawn and I shut off my mower to move debris and it wouldn't start up again. Tested spark plug no spark tried another plug and still nothing so ima be heading to get that ignition coil tool and see if it's the coil.
You helped me fix the problem! Tenx
Great video.very helpful.
Nice. Great idea to use a drill to turn the engine.
Wow good video learn something today great job bro. Thanks
Good video. Anyways, I working on my Craftsman lawn mower with Brigs & Stratton engine. My problem is that I have spark (not to big) on the spark tester with direct connection to the motor body. When I put in line spark plug I have no spark at all. I tried that on my other lawn mower and it work with spark plug in. Any idea, weak ignition coil maybe ?
Thanks for the video on this I have a Craftsman lawn mower like that. I've tried but you showed on and it still doesn't start I still have to use starter fluid to start it up do you have any other suggestions on what I can try thanks a lot you have been a big help
Thanks! Super helpful!
Good presentation.
Thanks for the video.
great teacher
Great job! Thanks
Very good video !!
Hells fire got that / an thank you straight to the point ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
You could also not have spark due to corrosion between the coil and the mower frame.
Nice video. I went through all of the steps and still had no spark. Finally found the problem. The cable from the starter cable was too long. It wasn't disengaging the kill switch where the grounding cable connects to. Once I shortened the cable (search on "How to Adjust Lawnmower Cable" on UA-cam), the lawnmower started on first pull.
Great video.
Great job.
Nice explanation
