Let's just send that engine flying and hope the rigging does not fail and fall on our heads. This is why we have professional divers not scuba divers who think they can do everything.
As always, I always enjoy watching your videos Alfred. With the Mercury Outboard Motor ascending that fast, it’s a wonder that it didn’t get the bends! 😂 I think that having a little less air in the salvage bladder; just a bit more above neutral buoyancy, would have been a whole lot better and much safer. I’m glad that you two made it out safely, and that expensive Mercury Veraldo can enjoy another day out on the water again.
The first thing I saw that worried me were the loose bights around the outboard's lower unit. Then there was the uncontrolled ascent. They're lucky the the line held, other wise they'd have to wonder which way to go as the outboard came down like a big fluttering sinker. I've done salvage diving and worked on ships for 30+ years. Always keep positive control of a load or you're going to have problems. His hand looks like it might have been the result of getting it caught between a mooring line and a bitt.
Agree. This video is a great tutorial for what NOT to do. Just because they got away with making so many mistakes, it does not mean they were good, just lucky. Worse is that because they got away with the mistakes, they are not likely to fully understand the unnecessary risk they placed themselves in.
John.. Don't be silly. The boat on the surface can see the airbag, the two divers don't have to follow it up. The knots were more than enough to secure the motor from coming loose. Those are self tightening knots under load.
That motor flew 10 feet out of the water and landed IN the damn boat! The air in the bag expands as it goes up so that damn thing was nearly full by the time it got to the surface!
@@hotrodhog2170 Back in the late 90's /2000 I worked in Egypt as a dive guide and instructor. The guy taking the video was in complete panic mode when descending looking at the gauges every 2 seconds lol. The other one looks to be in complete control of the situation. It's simple go down quick to 100 feet , check your gauges , secure the engine, go up and do your decompression time , no need to panic. If is was myself I will also have a pony tank on my side just to be safe but that's just me . Great video and great recovery

Having the anchor on the wrong side of the lift bag. Not doing a controlled accent. These guys got the job done, but not how I have been taught.
Good job boys!!! Mission completed. So many things to say in debriefing. Try to invest in a dive computer and a carabiner to attach the spare tanks or another acessories. Half price of GoPro you can buy one good computer and the carabiner. Kepp diving and have fun.
Damn, I kept waiting for him to stop inflating the bag. One big long fill, I knew that thing was going to rocket to the surface. I’d have been swimming away fast, that Verado would be quite a hit to your noggin when it slips out of the rigging when it hits the surface.
That was cool af. It sucks every time I watch a video there are so many couch captains throwing shade in comment threads. Positive advice is rarely given. Always belittling and negativity... Bs...
Ok that’s a fair comment. So here is the advice. (Bring a line down the shot line along with the bag. Inflate the bag to slightly below positively buoyant. Attach the line and leave the motor at the bottom. Stow the spare tank on loop on a lanyard on the bcd so both hands are free to control buoyancy and monitor ascent rate and air, and so one is not distracted. Alternatively it could attach it to the motor which stays at the bottom. Stay closer to each other (eye contact)to monitor each other. When everyone is safely topside then haul the engine once everyone is aboard.)
Not sure about the deep dive comment, BSAC used to be 50m max air dive limit. So 35m was considered a normal depth nothing deep about it. Did a few 50m dives on WW2 submarines which were considered deep but I suppose to many people who do PADI holiday dives 35m may seem very scary. Rubbish knots a few half hitches and hope the engine didn’t come past them on the way back down lol. Great dive though I do miss stoney cove on a Winter morning down the black hole at 35m zero viz waiting for my DV to freeze up. Lol
½ of the time spent at 97 feet was wasted by not prepping for the task before making the dive. that bag should have been ready to go before you hit the water.
By three minutes in I'm thinking body language/resp. rate is too frantic. Then fumbling around lashing & in the wrong place. "Oh, this is gonna be good!" Led me to expect the uncontrolled ascent. But I still almost involuntarily put my hand on top of my head. Oh, man you lucky boys! Unfortunately these guys are likely the type who'll then begin telling everyone they're pros/know what they're doing. Then they'll convince some "victim" -s to go with them next time. Their future, &/or someone else's, is the scariest thing about this vid.
Rady Philips the guy missing half a hand obviously does risky shit. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and assume that he operates in a different lane than you.
After watching this video I now remember why I had to get out of S. Florida! Someone was generous enough to take you and your kid on a test ride of his new boat and had a catastrophic engine loss. And you try to cash in on his loss!?!? Why not give it back so their research and development can figure out exact cause of accident (supposed bolts) and make their product better. Then if he wants he can give the motor to you honorably!
lmao they are all together hes recording the owners people retrieving the engine he lost you should watch the video of the engine falling off first when they said they would return to get it with propper diving equipment
First of all you both were down @ 97 feet for less than 5 minutes (4 minutes to be exact according to your video time.) No decompression data, on your person, they do sell plastic decompression wheel charts giot down with grease pencils that you hang on your wrist. Never rely on memory for decompression time and depth. In this case just ascending slowly and breathing normally for the depth and time would have been sufficient. I also saw some panicking when ascending. Apparently poor planing was used. Since you already knew that you would go to 90 feet as marked on the motors. Also you guys should take a course on tying knots. A timber hitch and one clove hitch knot on each of both ends secured to the air bag ring would have been a lot better than 6 half hitches. Last but not least, you had no control of the ascension of the motor, it just flew out of you hands. Boy this was a good video on things not to do while diving for a salvage. You have good diving equipment, but poor diving knowledge.
