    I love that your style involves a lot of colour, art, and antiques. I find that, to a lot of people, minimalism seems to mean white on white and modern. There's nothing wrong with that, if you love it, but it doesn't resonate with everyone. Some of us like having some colour in our lives.

    • @MessyMinimalist
      @MessyMinimalist  7 років тому +38

      Thanks - I used to try to reject my inner 'style' thinking I needed to like that stark-white look as well, but it's just not for me! I also like having textures! I think we can still be more minimal and have these things for sure. :)

    Love the new video! Don't appoligize for not sticking to KonMari! I feel like the fact that you are doing something and being productive is great!! I like that you are doing a mixture of different declutter/organizing styles! So inspired to make my own video!!

      I completely agree with HolmesSweetHolmes! As much as I would love to follow KonMari perfectly, it's just not practical. I love that you are tweaking things to make it work for you! :)

    • @MissVasques
      @MissVasques 7 років тому

      HolmesSweetHolmes Agreed. With so much clutter it would be difficult I think to do it the KM way as you prob keep finding things belonging to a cathegory you purged but didnt see because of the heaps of clutter.
      You could always go do it the ”right” way when you have a idea where everything are and know you can get to it.

    You are so realistic and down to earth ! Making yourself vulnerable in front of all of us by showing how messy life can really be is absolutely heart warming !
    I’m not about the “minimalist” fad because I’m like you, I am busy and I have a lot of projects but I am into getting rid of stuff that’s not needed. I’m comforted that you still want to have “things” in your home that make your home feel like a home, like the book shelves !!!
    Another point about the sentimental items, I think it is important to take extra time and be in the right frame of mind when making those decisions, those items cannot be replaced and you can cause yourself more grief by carelessly throwing them.
    Blessings to you !

    I love how you actually went through quickly to get the shelves that you wanted. Rather than going onto all the spaces and then going back.
    Cant wait to see more videos as you declutter your own house. I am working on decluttering my own space. So it helps of course to see others.

    While I'm a big believer in KonMari and going by categories, I honestly don't think that it would work for you purely cause you have so much random stuff everywhere, you probably don't even know where to collect stuff for your categories, so I think what you're doing makes sense. And you're doing a whole area in one go rather than a bit by bit, so I think that makes it work. As long as you don't find yourself moving items from room to room I think it's great. Maybe once you've dealt with your closets/problem areas, you could address things that are left by category and it would be easier.

    • @MessyMinimalist
      @MessyMinimalist  7 років тому +5

      I think you're right. There is a LITTLE bit of moving from room to room - but mostly it's moving categories actually. Like I have a HUGE pile of decor that I keep adding to, and I plan to go through it again before hanging/placing anything. But doing rooms is helping me clear out a lot of stuff so I can SEE what I have left. ....here goes nothing! :)

    I think random stuff gets accumulated in random places during the "quick clean." I've noticed that when I'm rushign to clean my place for guests, I just throw stuff in any compartment that I know will be hidden. "I'll get to it later" "I'll reorganize that later." it never really happens for me.. and then months/years later, I have to find something, and I don't know where it is. That used to happen to me a lot.. until i decided to not have drawers anymore lol.

    Love the diy book shelves you put in and used a level (high marks for proper form). Here's a tip for the kiddo books: stash them in a bin. Most people will get very tired of putting them back on the shelf esp. since they generally a kinda flimsy and thin so cannot stand on their own. Thanks for documenting your progress!

    So what if hanging a bunch of pictures on the wall isn't "minimalist enough" - if it makes you happy, do it! That's what minimalism is all about anyway: cutting down your possessions to only the ones that are truly useful or that make you happy.

  • @crle1944
    @crle1944 7 років тому +1

    Don't worry about doing it perfectly! I found when I did it the first time was hard and nothing moved much, but the second time I did it I knew what I had because I had gone through it before and it was so much easier to see what I didn't like and didn't used and so heaps more goes the second time!

    Minimalism is very personal to each person, I'm like you in that I love art, I have got a lot less than I used to but it's all a journey, as you get rid of more stuff and start to feel the peace that that brings you , you will want to get rid of more and more. It's looking fab by the way, you are doing great!

    Your videos are inspiring. Thanks for your honesty. A hygge nook sounds like it may become your favorite place in the house. I am in the process of decluttering my house, too, and it's nice (?) to see that I'm not alone. I'm doing mine differently: boxing up the things I know I need and use, and then putting a few things I really like in another box, and then ditching the rest. If I haven't used it in a year, it's gone! Can't wait to see your house when you're finished. Oh, btw, I loved your husband's addition to this video "Whoo!" lol And, hey, who really cares whether or not you stick to the Konmari method. Done is better than how you got it done.

    I'm starting to think we're related. I have a wall rack with hook for coats. I put it in the main entry and my family started hanging really heavy stuff, like all their coats on it and heavy backpacks *instead* of us using the COAT CLOSET ON THE OPPOSITE WALL. Seeing the coat rack that apparently gets the same treatment as my wall hooks made me realize it's ok to get rid of the rack. Thank you.

    Kon mari has some good ideas. She does says we can break categories in smaller ones to avoid overwhelm. TJ's way on UA-cam does that sometimes in her journey. I would definitely need to do so, because I have Fibromyalgia, and tire easily.

    • @kathalinehansen7078
      @kathalinehansen7078 7 років тому +1

      I usually store things close to where I USE them.
      Konmari suggested storing things where is it easy TO PUT THEM AWAY.
      AH-HA moment!
      I moved my favorite cups, mugs, and saucers to the cupboard above the sink. I have a L-shaped kitchen. On one wall, my fridge is directly to the right of my kitchen sink. There is no counter between my fridge and sink. My counter top is to the left of the sink. Most of the counter is along the other wall at a right angle.
      Now I can prepare a drink without walking back and forth to the fridge. I just remove a cup from the cupboard, place it inside the sink; reach into the fridge, remove liquid, pour it into
      the cup, and return liquid to fridge. Then I pick up the filled cup from the sink and carry it to the table. Much better for my weak hands, too.
      When I am done: I wash the cup and place in the dish drainer on the counter to the left. Once it has dried, I can stand in front of the sink, pick my cup up with my left hand, turn to the right, and put the
      cup away. only a couple of steps for this routine. I no longer ignore my cups in the drainer, because it is closer to sink than the former cabinet.
      This is the opposite of my normal routine of storing things close to where I USE them. That is why my dishes are on the lowest shelf of the cabinet above the counter at a right angle to the sink. Less likely to drop them, and closer to my table.

    • @MessyMinimalist
      @MessyMinimalist  7 років тому +1

      Ahh, this sounds so nice! I think that will help me a lot to store items in more appropriate, easy to access places like that. I always laugh at myself when I realize I've been storing an item I rarely use in a PRIME spot.. it makes no sense! ;-)

    Very nice shelves! I'm saving sentimentals for last, too. I didn't follow the Marie Kondo book exactly and I think it's fine as long as what you are doing works for you. My apartment wasn't big enough and too messy to pile everything up so I did room to room as well. BUT now that I am almost done with the rooms, I have some space where I can do piles and re-declutter those and that is much easier IMO.

    To me minimalism is keeping the stuff you love and use and letting the other stuff go. It's not about a particular look or style. If you love books for example then it make sense to have more books. Same goes for art. Do what feels right for you. I say put whatever you want on your walls. You go girl!

    that is a good point! I think we are just so busy and our brains are constantly going that we just don't think about throwing even the simplest things like a deodorant top away. I have to admit, I've had some of those around my house too.

    Refreshing and funny! Thanks for keepin' it real. Sometimes when I watch cleaning or organizing videos, it looks a little like they did some pre-cleaning or pre-organizing before filming.

    • @MessyMinimalist
      @MessyMinimalist  7 років тому

      Haha, yeah I agree, I question how much 'pre-cleaning' happens! I always get super nervous when I go to film (or I'm editing) and I see what a mess it is, but this is about the journey here... messes are just part of life! ;-)

    I really enjoyed this video, I have simplified my house so much already but somehow every time I see a video of yours I get inspired to go do some other little project I have been delaying ( I can relate with what you said about being high energy yet I guess indeed 'lazy' I am chaotic, but now I a more organized chaotic ;) And about yet another box with stuff you find , like unwelcome surprises to oneself , I always say "Oh no, the horror" ;) but luckily with a lot of hard work & effort they are becoming less and less

    Love your channel and very inspired by your style of cleaning. But I need to confess that I just screamed "nooooooo" when you called some awesome Antiques as junk and said you were throwing them away. Lol! But I am inspired to start my journey of purging and cleaning. Thanks for sharing.

      lol - I'm glad you're enjoying my channel. :) And I know, I really love antiques, but I've realized that they just stress me out because I don't use them. (They kind of just sit there collecting dust). It gives me guilt seeing them sitting there! I sold a bunch of antiques last year, and now I'm just donating what's left of my stuff.

    I totally agree with the Konmari method going through room. I live on three floors that have two full kitchens and three bathrooms. I'd go cazy having to go through categories, too... I love Konmari but one must adapt it to one's own needs... Do you!

    I realized the things that are in random places where I think "how did that get there" actually "got there" (haha) when I would "power clean" before having guests. This is that rush faze where anywhere other than plain sight is a good place to set things so that people won't realize I cause the random clutter. Makes the cycle worse because once our guests leave, we can't find anything lol.

    Beautiful transformation of this room ! Love the color. Those shelves ! Oh man someday I have to do that! I have a few milk crates of books that I still refuse to get rid of. I have two decent book shelves , that are in use but your new shelves are like .... Salvation ! Haha! Yes ! Saw your Kon Mari book during the fast-forward! I have to get that ! ( what? But I have books in crates! To my credit, I have completely calmed down with book buying : did that years ago. Annnnnd I've gotten rid of at LEAST a large shelf's worth of books over the past fifteen years ). Like you, I don't follow Kon Mari to a tee. But I'm happy with my progress. I recently cleared & tidied a very similar small room. Prior to doing so, it was just a "junk room". Ugh! Why ??? Haha! Go easy on yourself ! I see you rolling your eyes and saying "why?" at items you've kept that you don't need. I do that, too. But it's all good: we're getting it done now! The room looks so sweet , and peaceful ! I've recently tackled a good cupboard, a desk drawer, donated clothes, and am boxing up some kitchen stuff and CDs to donate. Making progress !

    I totally unserstand you. I do Kon Mari in my own way, too. Some things I was able to do just categories and some, not so much. I think the kitchen is probably the best example of this. I have a very small child, and I just found it was easier to do a cabinet or or a drawer at a time when she was napping or something. The thought of pulling everything out within her reach for a huge hours long go through? Just not at all practical. Lol! I also understand what you said about hanging in to stuff because you like the "idea" of it. I do that, too! Well, pretty much any excuse to hang on to something, I am notorious for. Guilt is a big one. Someone have gave it to me, I spent money on it, etc. Also, I'm horrible about the "I might need/use/want this someday" thing. And then there's the "idea" of something. Someone else has something like thia in their home and it's super cute! Or, I love the idea of doing this or that but I never actually do it. Kon Mari has helped me to mentally prioritize my lifestyle fantasies to I can focus on what I actually want to do with my time/space/resources and let go of all the rest. It helps a lot. I still falter from time to time. Love your series! 💕
